I'm certainly out of my comfort zone here learning something new - slow is very difficult. Being a coach, I know that the most effective way to learn a new technique is to be helped by someone who's much more experienced. Thanks to Steve, I'm getting acquainted with the GS - slowly, but surely...

Mike, do you remember stripping a TZR250 back in the 90's at Knockhill inbetween races to replace a gear selecter for Chris Moss???

Was I riding? I really can't remember, I did the TZR Challenge in 87 and the Junior Stock I think in 88 on a TZR but not in the 90's unless I was there on a 600 but even then I can't remember doing work on one, anymore details to help jog my little grey cells.?

@@MikeSpikeEdwards Yes Juniorstock 88 sounds more like it. You were competing and winning the championship probably. It was really good of you to help us out,Top Bloke.

May i how tall are you ? Do you know the seat height of that GS?

I'm 5' 6" with a 29" inside leg so the GS even in low seat height mode is a bit of a stretch to reach the ground.
Interestingly the GS I borrowed (25th anniversary model) had a slim/lower seat option and I tried both before choosing which I was going to use.
With the low seat fitted the seat hight measurement is lower but the width of the seat (because in effect there is less sponge fitted) was wider.
This caused my legs to be forced apart more which in turn made it more difficult for me to reach the floor. Ironically, with the normal (taller seat) fitted it was easier to touch the floor. Try both before committing to any is my recommendation.
Sorry I have no idea of the actual seat height, remember though a brand new machine will be slightly taller untill the suspension and seat break in. Try sitting on both new and second hand machines to see the difference.

Yes. It's just a matter of mastering the handling and riding techniques. Google 'Gaston Rahier' he was a great famous and successful Paris Dakar competitor and was 5' 5"

Yes, but track riding, coach on track or online from your own video. I'm certainly not an off road specialist.
