Hey Justin i have a friend that trains me he goes to a junior college and always tell me i need to go straight down to the ball and that im dropping my shoulder and my hands. Is there anyway i could send you a video of my swing or what could you tell me thats better than going straight down to the ball or anythibg helps
Zack Purcell same, I was just hitting in the cage and my timing was good and everything but the contact was week and they just went straight in the air
im a highschool freshman player and i developed this habit last year and now i can barely hit in BP im missing alot of balls. hopefully i can fix this soon
Thank you much. I played two games yesterday and in the second game struck out both AB because of dropping the shoulder. Can't wait to get in the cages and fix it.
GREAT video. My son was dropping his back shoulder and this really helped! We have been working on staying connected and keeping the elbows separated. This really simplified his swing because now he just attacks the ball by rotating his shoulders through his swing and stays connected. This instantly added power and consistency. THANKS again!
I'm glad to hear you come out and say things that have been obvious to everyone who has swung a bat but are labeled "bad mechanics". I've taken crap from other coaches and parents for not "correcting" kids from dropping their back shoulder...even though my players consistently hit better and have considerable growth during the season. As a coach and mechanical engineer I wanted to just correct a small piece of your commentary. When you talk about the downward swing, or "chop" driving the ball into a grounder...it's not that simple. You are spot on regarding the window of opportunity to hit the ball being VERY small in that scenario. However, if say the bat is coming down at a 20* angle, and the ball is coming in at a lessor angle of 5-10*, if the bat connects with the ball anywhere higher than 9 O'Clock on the barrel, it's going to send the ball out opposite to the strike angle minus the incoming angle of the ball. So if you are chopping down at the ball at 20*, the ball is coming in at 5* (Both relative to a horizontal plane of the batter.) and the bat strikes the ball at the 10 O'clock position on the barrel, that ball is going to jump off that bat at a 15* angle. Think of it very much like playing pool when you use a ball to hit another ball. You can send that initial ball towards the side bumper, but so long as it hits the other ball at the right angle, the second ball will head off opposite whatever angle it was hit with. So you can sink a ball into the corner pocket by aiming a ball at the side bumper. There is more to it, but that's the simple explanation. Technically the math shakes out that swinging at a downward angle will produce a good hit...but in reality we are not machines that can perfectly time and replicate angles and more often than not, we chop it into the dirt like you said. So I agree with you that putting the bat on an angle more relative to the incoming ball is MUCH more forgiving and gets us human beings better results. I just wanted to share the mechanics behind how swinging on a downward angle can actually produce a decent hit...for a robot. LOL Thanks again for the video, great to see someone finally just say what needed to be said.
I hear you! What i do is ask coach to name any major league player. Then i go to youtube and get a video of that player hittng is slow motion. I ask the coach to tell me if they are dropping their back shoulder. I have put together a collage of hitters all dropping their back shoulders. I hate lazy coaches who don't do their homework. esp. when we have youtube and can watch anyone hit in slow motion. As Mike Espstein says "teach what you see."
Maintaining the "T" relationship between your spine and shoulder plane is paramount. For a powerful pivot the hips must tilt so there will be a commensurate lowering of the back shoulder.
Most of these videos are without value. This one was really clear and really valuable. Great information, clearly and simply presented. Valuable information.
The video hits every major point in hitting--I was searching for a video to help me instruct my Pee Wees in Tee Ball as they are hitting below the ball on the tee. My golf coach suggested they probably were coming too steep, which is exactly one problem that would cause hitting below the ball on the tee. This video helps out. You should do a video with a title of stop hitting below the ball on a tee. Same content. Thanks for the video.
Hate hearing coaches telling hitters to "stop dropping their back shoulder." They all do (as you said). The idea is to drop it correctly. Thank you coach. You are great teacher of the game!
Drives me nuts how coaches say the back shoulder should never be lower. It should always have a slight dip-it’s the only way to be on the same plane of a strike. Obviously, the key is moderation
I agree. Drives me nuts when I hear "have a level swing." You don't want to swing level, you want to swing on plane with the pitch. In order to do so, your back shoulder will be lower than your front shoulder at the point of contact.
Dude I have been having problems with my son dropping his shoulder and I finally seen what's causing it watching your video. Thanks so much for making this.
Buckling the seatbelt is awesome. Thanks. Never heard of that before, but makes sense. It’s not that this is the preferred method, but for an “exaggeration” technique to help kids that have a problem with their back elbow getting in front of their back hand, that’s fantastic.
What's up Coach J? Can you do a video on turning hips? I Coach youth baseball and my son is currently struggling with this. He hits the ball hard but if I could just get him to turn his hips....By the way, you are doing a fantastic job. I'm a fan.
Some teaching points are “feel vs real”. For example if someone is dropping the barrel way to early ,causing swinging under the ball, we may say swing down or buckle the seatbelt. That is not what we want in reality. But using that mindset may actually produce a better bat path. Many good hitting coaches use these types techniques. It’s works for some players and some it doesn’t.
I like the knob to the catcher. I could be wrong, but I don't know if anyone has mentioned how the bat being held with a tilt (knob angled straight back towards ground) can contribute to the chicken wing. Kids who aren't strong enough will pull the knob forward and towards pitcher too much to create the chicken wing. Others just don't do the correct movement.
This has been my problem all year, I always drop my shoulder and am just not making good contact. Every once in a while I’ll make barrel and when I do I have power, but everything else is a pop up or a strikeout.
Coach you are right about everything except for the title of the video. What is dropping is the battle aka bat dragg wich in bad (bat lag is good). The shoulder should drop or dip just like you are doing at 6:21.
Yes, I completely agree. Hopefully that was made clear in this video. We want to avoid bat drag, but we love bat lag! And at the point of contact, the back shoulder should be lower than the front shoulder. Thank you for the support!
This is pretty good, and I agree with everything you're showing, but I think I think a lot of the problems with coaching this stuff comes from semantics. Coaches say, "Stop dropping your back shoulder.", but we all know that the back shoulder has to work under. A better way to term this is to call it dumping the barrel. We want the back shoulder to drop with the swing, but we don't want the barrel to dump back or the hands to drop.
Man this was happening to my high school playing son this season. He was an all county, .400 hitter last season and barely hitting .300 this season. He gained about 15 lbs of muscle and was crushing the ball in preseason and expectations were high. Very frustrating. He got in the habit of lunging at off speed pitches and curveballs which throws off his swing plane. Working his way out of it. Baseball is a tough tough game, man
Shoulder naturally lowers as the hip rotates. Everything up top, is impacted by the lower half movements. Bat should be on plain until about the time the hands hit "belt buckle line". If your front foot lands opens or opens to soon (before the hands align with the belt buckle line), your back shoulder will drop every time. Rule: lower half predicates upper half. Still some good info here kid. You have some good content.
How do you feel about training guides or drills that forces you to to tuck you back elbow in. Wouldn't that promote you elbows being to close to each other during the swing
I’m SO mad that I did not discover these tips in the past 25 years! Thank you sir. Whether it was baseball or now adult slow-pitch softball I’ve always had problems with dropping the shoulder!! I never knew the knob facing the catcher tip - I’ve always had the knob facing literally the ground of the opposite-side batter’s box. Never knew about the elbows at equal angles either. Can’t wait to test these out
Coach, do you ever take fans video and provide one tip to help ? I have a slo mo of my son that is a spitting image of what you just described and I think hearing it from you would have the instruction sink in more than Dad/Coach
I’ve been struggling the past months with hs baseball and travel I go to the cages everyday and look great in there then when I get in the game I do the exact opposite and it’s so frustrating

Look even on your own demonstration at 6:17 which is exactly the correct down position of the right elbow it is much closer to the left elbow than its initial high position. Otherwise fully agree on the "do not hit down" , but hit up equal and opposite.
I watched because I was thinking that my shoulder was dropping but I learned it was my wrist because I used a heavy bat but now I’m stronger and can swing without my wrist giving out but if my shoulder was dropping I believe this would be very helpful
This weekend at a tournament for 11yr olds I heard the coaches telling their players to "Drop their elbow and Spin fast" Do you know what this means and does it create Bat speed or = power?

Hey coach Justin I'm in the 11 grade and I am trying out for the school team and yesterday I had baseball practice and the coaches were saying I was dropping my back shoulder and I was turning my head out so I was missing balls and hitting ground balls
JOtero5956 the way I stopped turning my head out is to bite my shirt and/or have someone’s hand to the find side of your you head, you’ll get tired of getting hit in the face and you learn lol
I dont know if its the camera angle but like when you drop your shoulder like you said is your back gonna tilt a little too i had the problem were i was putting my elbow into my side and i was popping up i felt bad because my uncle is the best baseball player in Wisconsin Dells home of the biggest waterpark in america he holds the all time BA in the south central conference he made it all the way to white water college he didnt keep up with his grades and he was a starting CF next year a few of his buddies got drafted and the one nationals i feel bad because i come from a very athletic background im great in all other sports and great defensively on baseball but just dont know if my back is supposed to be bent when im in my swing when my shoulders drop please help
swing down is a swing thought not an action. It's for players who drop hands to help them mentally understand. If you tell someone who swings loopy to swing up their problem will get worse.
if you actually watched the first 2 min of the video he explains it's ok to drop the back shoulder. the difference is dropping the back shoulder to soon which can cause a long swing before contact or a very loopy swing.

Thanks. Had my swing perfected then it decided to start doing weird shit.
Heres a tip: Sometimes i start swinging weird (when i forget about how I'm holding the bat) and start holding the weight of the bat all in one hand
This dude fixed all my problems
I’m a college baseball player and I just created this habit a week Ago. I appreciate this video man.
