  • Breeding horses with long legs leads to problems with the statics and movements. Foals often suffer from birth under these disabilities. They can no longer graze as they should while standing, but have to bend wear-prone their front legs or even get on their knees to reach the grass. We demand: Stop the breeding horses for long legs!

This makes sense, many of the large European warm bloods, at my primarily jumper stable, are injured all the time and taking all kinds of supplements. My Arabian takes nothing at 18 years of age and is not throwing me off all the time like the jumpers do. When I ask them about jumping their horses they always say "oh but my horse loves to jump".

I am disgusted that this is being allowed to happen. How heartbreaking for these majestic animals to be tortured in such a way. This must stop!

That first foal reminds me of show-bred German shepherd dogs, they're also bred for over-angulation of the hocks, which leads to that same loose, wobbly movement in the hind end.

This is a great video. Thank you for speaking out about it. Would you mind explaining more about the breeding of short backs and collection I’d be interested in learning more about this

These breeding alterations developed during the last 45 years. When they stopped breeding horses for farm-work in the seventies the only goal in breeding was a most efficient horse for riding and subsequently for dressage competition.
With the use of Thoroughbred- stallions these half-bloods became more responsive and flexible. Their movements became more and more spectacular. This flexibility affected at the same time other body parts. The poll would bend easily and the back became less solid. So a long back could easily become a swayback if not trained well.
“This can easily be modified” by preferring horses with shorter backs, was the answer of those responsible for breeding evaluation. This decision was not based on the long standing knowledge of dressage training. The main point of dressage training is to shift the center of gravity further back and take weight from the front legs enabling the horse to move lightly on a very small radius.
This process is made possible by a specific body. Mainly well-formed hindquarters with the joints placed on top of each other, working like a spring. By bending those joints and transforming the upward impulse of the movements into the sacroiliac joint and further into the spine, the back can be arched upwards like an arch bridge, carry a rider without damage to the spine and lighten the weight of the front legs.
A short back is less flexible, as was the intended goal by changing the selection modus. It does not arch well and its upward tendency is limited.
At the same time there was a liking for horses with longer legs. It looked more spectacular in the dressage arena. A bit like the long legged Tiller-Girls.
This is another change without considering the biodynamics. With a short back and longer legs horses had a tendency to reach into the bales of their front hooves. Therefore they needed bell boots. Meanwhile most horses touch down at the side of the front hooves. By doing so causing their spine to wobble to each side by every stride.

So hard to watch the foals. Most do spread their front legs wide to get grass as they have relatively short necks compared to their legs, but not like that.

Breeding for extremes leads to problems in every species from pedigree dogs to horses. Im personaly shocked to discover this is going on in Warmblood breeding. This must be directly the result of breeding horses only for dressage always asking for more in movement and size.

:'( This is truly sickening and disheartening to watch.
