    Watching this particular video was super intimidating, compared to your others, simply because my first thought was just having all of this super-complex information thrown at me in rapid succession. But in reality, I'm sure all of this is covered at a sensible pace, with each new lesson building from the foundation of the last. I used to frankly suck at mathematics back in high school until I got a tutor, but that made all the difference. It was just a matter of filling in the blanks, since it all fits together, with the complex resting upon the simple.

    Hey Stephen, long time watcher/first time commenting haha. I just had my interview for Seattle and am sort of unsure of what to think. I am currently ranked 98, but they're very unclear of when classes will start (not sure if months-long concrete strike is holding up everything else). Basically what I'm asking is this: given that all Locals are different, do you have a rough idea of what rank # should start seriously considering preparing for a second interview (taking classes, etc.)? Thanks so much!

    • @MadElectrician
      @MadElectrician  2 роки тому

      Hey, thanks for reaching out!
      I’m happy to hear that you’ve been enjoying the videos!
      Based off of how things were when I got in, anything under 120 was probably good enough to make it in; however, things have changed a little bit. Our local is interviewing every month now rather than once ever 3-6 months. That means that people get pushed back further on the list faster than before because there are always people ranking higher than them. No you probably need to rank in probably the top 35 or so to make it in. Again, that’s just here though, and that’s an educated guess.
      I don’t think they are interviewing as frequently there, so it’s very possible that 98 is a good enough rank. You should definitely be proud of it considering how many people are constantly applying.
      I have 2 brother in laws that are a part of Local 46 so I’ll reach out to them and see what they think. 👍🏼

      @MadElectrician  2 роки тому +1

      Hey, great question!
      I actually don’t know the number of market share that we have here at Local 48. I do know that it’s relatively big though, as we have a very strong union presence here in the Portland, Oregon area. It’s one of the reasons that our wages are so good ($53.85/ hr plus benefits package).
      If you’re looking for a good way to get your foot in the door, I would start off by becoming a material handler! It’s a great way to start working in the Local and to get familiar with everything, while also gaining the necessary experience to rank well in an interview!
      You can stop by our union hall to apply to become a material handler. You can also ask about the pre-apprenticeship, which is another great way to appear more qualified for getting in.
      There are some people who end up going the non-union route and then switching over later. That works too, but if your end goal is to join the IBEW then I would recommend trying your best to start out with them.
      I have videos talking about how the whole process works!
      Hope that helps! ⚡️

    Awesome video/s! Really insightful and true to the experience. I just turned out at Local 40. Joining the IBEW was the best decision I ever made, although I wish I had moved home to join through Local 48 instead. Either way, I’m glad I’m in.
    Have you taken your final exam? If so, how was it? I’m from Portland and looking to move back to work out of 48. That exam is in my future! Any pointers?
    Anyways, keep up the good content!

    I'm 29 and am thinking of going to the tech school in my area for the electrician program. Is getting started with this journey at 30 too late?

      that's about how old I was when I got in. I take 3 weeks vacation a year, own a house, an Audi and a boat and sent two kids thru college and have medical insurance all on IBEW pay. I worked hard and became a foreman as soon as I could. GO FOR IT!

      I think he said the average age of journeymen turned out is 41, so there are younger and older. 29 is a great age to get started, judging by the information he's presented.

    Do you ever plan to get your masters electrician license in the future

    • @MadElectrician
      @MadElectrician  2 роки тому

      Hey Drake!
      Here in Oregon a master electricians license is actually called a supervisors license. I hear that it is extremely difficult to pass, but I think I am up for the challenge! I believe that I need to work in the field as a journeyman for 8000 hours first before I am eligible to test for it, so it will be a while before I can try. I would like to keep learning, studying, and staying up to date with code and calculations even after I finish my apprenticeship so that I won’t have to relearn everything when the time comes ⚡️

    What happens when you fail tests during apprenticeship schooling?

    • @Abyssaeon
      @Abyssaeon Рік тому +1

      I think he said in another video that you can take it again in 6 months, so if you fail, just try to remember what portions you struggled on and study hard in those 6 months.

      I was also wondering about the tests that you still take while your doing your schooling 1x a week. About what the process is if you fail a test. And howmany times can you retake it

    TOM HENRY IS THE BIGGEST GOAT EVER (facts).
    Also I paid for all my books I believe and I can't remember how much they were but I'd guess anywhere from $500-2,000 total for 5 years.

      Brae, no kidding!
      In preparing for this video I got permission from each publisher to show the inside of their books in my video. I had an over half hour long conversation with Tim Henry (Tom’s son) on the phone and he is straight up one of the most genuine and nicest guys I’ve talked to. Their books are top tier! ⚡️
      That sounds about right. I’m definitely very grateful for what was given to me.
