    Tips to save money:
    1. Laptop on macOS in general is twice expensive as the same laptop on Windows/Linux.
    2. Look for a laptop with +1 spare RAM slot and buy it yourself, it's much cheaper and super easy to install and you'll get another "level" of laptop for a low price.
    3. Laptops without any OS preinstalled are cheaper. Then you can install Linux or find a Windows for "free".
    4. The most reasonable laptop manufacturers in my experience regarding price/quality are: Lenovo, Asus, Dell, Acer.
    5. You can develop iOS apps on Windows only on a virtual machine + macOS image, which consumes resources but if it's a modern laptop you won't experience any significant problems.
    6. SSD is a must. Your OS drive should be on the SSD, as well as the project, IDE, compiler and everything which is involved in your building process.
If you have an old laptop it probably has a CD drive, you can replace it with a "pocket" and a SSD drive inside.
And you'll have two drives: an SSD for software and OS and your old HDD for storing data. I recommend WD as an SSD manufacturer and 500GB capacity

Remove Number 5, MacOS will run only on dedicated ARM CPUs in the future. If you're a developer just go with a Mac, no other OS will let you develop native apps for Android,IOS and MacOS, also with the introduction of SwiftUI there is no doubt that the entire market will shift to MacBooks, Apple is making it super easy for developers, with SwiftUI you can create an app for IOS/IpadOS and MacOS in the same project, there is no competition anymore, within a few years, all the developers will migrate to Apple, resulting in a huge boom in the App Store.

A couple of things - screen size: when I'm at home I shut my laptop & plug in a larger monitor & standard size keyboard so what screen size i want depends on how much I work while traveling since a smaller size is more convenient at home (closed). OS- id say it entirely depends on what you are coding- trying to code a Net Core app on Linux would be well, not very efficient if even possible.

I bought a Lenovo B50-30 notebook back in 2015 for just £170! It had Windows 8 on it!! As you can all guess, I replaced that OS immediately with Ubuntu 14.04 at the time. Now I have Ubuntu 20.04 on it. And, with a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, the notebook works pretty well still. Considering both the price and the low quality specs. Since first using Ubuntu back in 2013, I have never looked back when it comes to using it for programming!

  • @helmutleitner5784
    @helmutleitner5784 3 роки тому +8

While I basically agree with most considerations, I think that it makes more sense to start with the concept of a LIMITED BUDGET, and then relative importance of features. E.g. is the 16-RAM-extension more imoortant than a 15-screen? In an ideal world, notebooks would be infinitely configurable, you could configure your ideal system, but they are not. Still, you can think about what certain system elements cost, and make best use of your budget.
One good way is to depart from considering the latest-and-newsst systems, because they are the most expensive, and the hype will fade quickly. Programmers do not need top machines, but it is good to change your system regularly. Look into the second-hand-market, where you can typically find the hyped systems from the past years for half the price.
Next, think about your customers, the people you are programming for. It is good to have knowledge about they user experience and work context. If you are a user (worse: a fan) of OS A, then you may have problems to even communicate with users of OS B, that is their world. Therefore, consider to buy into a Operating System that your target customers also use.
Dual boot is fine, Having all kinds of OSs on various machines, older and newer is inevitable.
In the long run, and if you have enough space, consider a big external monitor, maybe a dual screen arrangement. I love my 32" 4K screen.

I have no platform loyalty. I've been writing code and doing product/ux design on Macs for nearly 20 years, and I've been a PC gamer/hardware enthusiast for even longer. I own a Mac Pro, fully-spec'd 16" MacBook Pro, along with a bleeding edge Windows PC. For my use case, mainly working in Unix-based stacks, the Mac made the most sense since it always had a leg up on Windows in that regard. That said, with the Windows Subsystem for Linux, the gap has decreased exponentially and really any beginner programmer can buy either a Mac or PC and get up and running quickly. While I still work mainly on my Mac (a two decades long workflow and native apps that I don't want to find Windows replacements for means I'm still chugging along happily with Apple's admittedly overpriced hardware), I installed my entire dev environment on a Razer Blade early last year and found -- due to the quality of the Blade and the addition of WSL -- it was as satisfying an experience to work on as my Mac while being substantially cheaper. For most devs, price doesn't factor in that much (development income is generally solid, so dropping $4-5k on a high-end MacBook Pro is not something we generally debate internally since its the machine that helps us earn those incomes), but for a new developer who's just getting started a cheaper Windows solution is far less cost prohibitive.

May I ask what pay for developers is like?

    • @Silverjerk
      @Silverjerk 4 роки тому +1

@@flako6096 It really depends on where you are, and what type of development you're doing. I'm mostly front-end and full-stack, and in my local market that can earn you anywhere from $80k all the way up to $170k. Experience factors in, as well as versatility and being able to pivot to other technical roles that can assist with design and development (QA, Project Management, DevOps, etc.). Because I'm also a product designer, I can generally seek out more opportunities and fill more roles, so I would also encourage anyone who's getting into development to be as flexible as possible and learn the other aspects of the development industry.

I’m using a 2020 13” MacBook Pro 😁 I love it! The third tier base model is what I’m using (512gb SSD, 16 RAM, 2.0 GHz quad core). Honestly, it’s the best laptop I’ve ever owned. Everything is super snappy! Unity, Xcode, VS Code, Blender, Photoshop....everything is buttery smooth! I haven’t even touched my PC since I got my MBP (back in early June).

Shinigami I mean, if you have an iPhone, Macs work really well with them with features like handoff and taking calls/FaceTime. People might also want a Mac if they ever want to make iOS apps (can’t do that on windows or Linux). Macs also work very well with the adobe suite and creative apps in general. There are also Mac exclusive apps like sketch, final cut, and Logic Pro that people really like. With macOS being unix based, making web apps is also a very seamless experience.
Also with any windows laptop, they start having problems after 2 years and/or die. Ever heard of the windows blue screen of death? I have yet to see a windows laptop that lasts more than 3 years. Windows laptops also come with bloatware.
Anyways, I’m happy with my new MacBook Pro. I will say this though: Windows works very well with C, C#, and C++. They are also very good at playing games, making games with unreal, and streaming. If any of those things interest you, then go for it! 😁

When buying laptop do not worry about GHz. Many manufacturers say their laptop gets 5ghz cpu when in real world it only gets 5ghz for a few seconds and then it clocks down to like 3GHz. Many times that 5ghz laptop will get outperformed by 2.5ghz one. Always check how many cores your laptop has. I would say 4 cores in bare minimum for 2020 because dual core just isn't enough. When buying intel try to get 9th or 10th generation. When buying amd laptop get it only with new 4000 series and at least 4500u cpu because in lower models ram works in single channel and it affects performance greatly. I think new ryzen laptops are in the sweet spot right now when you get most of performance per $ and even up to 8 cores with decent price.

Great video with great advice all around especially about size. I would say the size of screen also depends on what size font you’re using and screen ratio. Also for students the smaller screen might be better since they have to move around a lot then when go back home plug into a monitor. Also for students who grew up in windows they can use the wsl to run a Linux Ubuntu. This gives them a gentler transition. For resolution 1080p is also nice because 4K is real battery sucker.

I think using VSCode with the remote VSCode extension + WSL2 (with Linux GUI support) via a Windows 10 Pro machine like the 2020 Dell XPS 15 or a mid to high-end quad-core or higher desktop with an SSD and 32GBs of RAM, and a low profile mechanical keyboard with a blue or brown switch like the Keychron K1 to have the best developer experience. You get the best of multiple worlds. I'd imagine getting xCode to work in WSL2 wouldn't be difficult since it's already doable via Linux.

I'd mainly use it for school, light gaming (although this is subject to change), and personal projects like digital art/design and photo editing. The model I'm thinking of getting is the one with ryzen 7 5800HS, 16 GB ram, 1TB SSD, rtx 3060, and it's a bit under 1200€.
Another thing I'm curious about is the OS, I'm thinking of running Linux as main, and having Windows on a virtual machine. The unfortunate thing for me is that I love working in Linux for development, especially for Android. The dell precision 15" is perfect for development. For mobile dev, the touch screen is massive boost. But... Because of iOS I have had to ditch my dell and go with MacBook 16"... It's really not as great as a dell precision.

Just a quick update, the MacBook Pro that I bought about 6 months ago, the one with the new keyboard ... Has started to fail on me during a pandemic. Some of the keys have become unresponsive the first time you press on it. It's become torturous to develop on now.

@@mistakenmeme yeah I used to run a hackintosh, but things are unstable. And, trying to research and fix issues takes up way too much time unfortunately. It was either start using a Macintosh or run a remote build on a hackintosh, decided to go with Macintosh just to simplify everything.
Main thing I needed to get to is the iOS simulator, but now that I've used the simulator it's so far behind the android simulator (like literally I can't properly test push notifications via the simulator, can't test hardware such as camera etc...). I'm starting to think that a build server with a iOS phone is probably a better setup. But Ive paid for this overpriced machine now.

For anything more than hobbyist coding, I rate you should try make sure you have at least double the min requirements of you IDE. As Kalle says, you'll likely be doing other stuff at the same time. And even as a hobbyist, you'll probably want to be able to run you tools of choice and Udemy at the same time

You would never need more than 32 gb of ram just for software development...

    • @akoursoumis

Depends on the load. Many people run Docker containers to emulate their server endpoints (might need many) and at the same time run their app emulators that consume said endpoints. So I 've seen people maxing the 32 GB in some scenarios. Granted it's not something everyone needs but it's not a crazy scenario.

I've dual-booted Linux along with Windows. Whenever I switch to Linux, I feel that the display is not as clear as to when running windows. Since you run Linux along with windows in your Dell XPS 15, do you notice any hardware optimization issues? And also, for simpler tasks, I feel that everything is handed to you in windows whereas in Linux even when you want something simple to be done you have to perform a lot of steps. Sadly, these are the things that led me back to using windows over Linux. The main reason why I installed Linux was for performance, but the non HD behavior of the display officially brought me back to Windows. And BTW, is the Dell XPS a good choice to buy?

@@suhashareesh9518 Maybe the problem is because your laptop is an Optimus laptop. The support for the Nvidia Optimus laptops is bad in native Linux so you have to install the proprietary Nvidia driver. It's harder if it's an Optimus laptop because even the proprietary driver doesn't let you switch graphic on the go like Windows (you have to log out first). I suggest trying Pop OS, it has a good support for Optimus laptops. For booting from USB, if you're going to install in UEFI mode, put the USB stick in a 2.0 slot. For Legacy mode, it works in any slot but I found that UEFI mode, sometimes the USB isn't bootable if you put it into a USB 3.0 slot.
