DDR almost made it to Euro '88. It would have been a great closing chapter before the reunion.

Никаких шансов у ГДР не было на Евро 88! Слишком был силен СССР!

There were very many tournaments that the DDR were very close to qualifying for. They were very unlucky for the most part.

Although they won the last four games, the defeat in Leipzig against Yugoslavia in the first group game was key and left them out of the World Cup.

@@lokismig Absolutely Miguel. Very true. That was tge GDR's undoing in most qualification campaigns, they were extremely hard to beat, they were not hugely skillful, but hard to break down, thry were tough and very disciplined, they usually lost the the odd games they needed to win to qualify.
The margins for qualifying were much tighter back then.

@@michealkelliher8428 That's right, the DDR were a strong team and very difficult to beat at home (usually the Zentralstadion in Leipzig) and although they dropped a lot when traveling abroad, they weren't an easy team either. His main problem, in my opinion, was his difficulty in scoring goals. although he had one of the best European forwards of the time in Streich (Magdeburg), but he had no other forwards comparable to him.
For example, I remember that in qualifying for the 1978 World Cup they were left out for not being able to beat Turkey at home, with whom they tied 1-1. and yet if they won it in Turkey

@@lokismig Kirchner from Dynamo Dresden was their main scorer I'm the late 80's. He was usually on the scoresheet. Sammer was probably their most naturally gifted player around the same time.

@@michealkelliher8428 I remember both of them, especially Sammer, who later played for reunified Germany and won the Euro 1996

Were there zero away fans in those days given the political sutuation there? What a trip that would have been! I was too young really to appreciate or think about visiting germany immediately after the wall falling. That would have been some experience.

The result of the last game is wrong. The score was: East Germany 2 Bulgaria 1

Still a great crowd attendance, I guess they were hoping for a result going in their favour elsewhere, presumably a France defeat
