Counting is CRITICAL and I did not learn it until I started to drum. Drumming, even if you suck, is just amazing practice to help guitar, piano, everything. Your lessons are amazing, understandable, organized, concise, clear with zero attitude. Very accessible, patreon subbed!
I'm a drummer but I still found this very informative. Counting is an essential skill for any musician regardless of instrument, but often gets overlooked by non-percussionists
I'm a drummer too, all of his videos are great for understanding the guitarist, and as a drummer who already understands the bassist it just makes sense to understand the guitar.
I’m just gonna say. Whatever guitar info I’m searching for I always find EXACTLY what I’m looking for on your channel. Then you explain it EXACTLY how I need it explained. ❤❤❤
I have saved and watched this video so many times as I think it is the best video on counting 16th note variations on the net. Most music beams the permutations, so it's good to come back occasionally to see it split up and remember what it sounds like🙂
This is the video I’ve been searching for and didn’t even know it. I’ve been struggling to play The Trails by Gojira because it’s all played in the 16th note. Thank you!
This would be a great lesson to revisit- especially focusing on muting during the rests, vs playing through to the next beat (playing longer notes). I’m glad I found it today! thanks, Jake!
As usual, incredibly helpful. Best Channel on UA-cam. I wish I could do this stuff... After many years of playing guitar I can play pretty much any rhythm by practicing it for hours on end but never been able to count the notes while playing them on guitar. I can either play the notes, or count the notes, but never been able to do it at the same time. I can only imagine how much time one could save learning songs by being able to count instead of trial and error.
Thank you so much for the clear and inspiring vids, I've learned more in the past few months than I've learned in the past number of years. You sir, are sincerely appreciated. Keep up the most AWESOME work !!!
As far as 16th rhythms goes, the most complicated riff I wrote is a riff in 17/8. The bassdrum and electric guitar (7 string) are in sync while the snare is every quarter note shifting every measure. For the sheetmusic: gloriaenkyrie.files.wordpress.com/2018/08/vb21-deel-6-17-8-2e-keer.png?w=700&h=708. For the audio: soundcloud.com/marc-volgers/5-timelines-6-miserable-time at 3:01.
I'm classically trained, getting into metal guitar. This is the best instruction I've seen online! Most musicians just step over the beat like illegals and the US border. Instant sub bro. I'm just sad I saw this video now as opposed to when it was released 4 years ago
I recommend actually trying to do the rests. Not only does it sound more powerful but it's also the correct way since not palm muting leads to some notes becoming 8th notes or quarter notes.
Playing through the rests makes it feel like 8ths and, ehm, 12ths (what's the correct term?). While I whole hearted understand and agree with the focus on the picking, making the mental leap seems unnecessary. Would writing it without rests be better or worse? With the rests my ears want to hear short notes or at least heavy palm muting. Real interesting exercise. I gotta give it a try. Also combining these into a full bar would be interesting, though 65535 variations would be difficult to play through:)
These are all awesome questions and points of view, all I can say is really really really hope you tune in for the next lesson because it basically combines everything you just said into one demonstration... I'm ridiculously excited to share it :P
A true master of guitar spends hours perfecting the 16th permutation of 16th notes.
And don't forget about triplets and mixing the two ;)
Some of the best lessons on UA-cam.
Yes, I agree. It's fucking free and I bet it's much better than a lot of paid tutorials.

Thanks Jeremy! I'll be doing more videos on counting coming up soonish =]
I play guitar since 95. Drum 4 years ago. I understand what you talked about.
I'm a drummer but I still found this very informative. Counting is an essential skill for any musician regardless of instrument, but often gets overlooked by non-percussionists
Yes it is and you know better than us lol
The fifth limb -your voice
counting is a child's play, i'm already adding and subtracting
I'm a drummer too, all of his videos are great for understanding the guitarist, and as a drummer who already understands the bassist it just makes sense to understand the guitar.
Skip to the slow drill- 02:55
Skip to the fast drill- 05:50

To those that this doesnt appeal to I feel sorry for them.
This is the video I’ve been searching for and didn’t even know it. I’ve been struggling to play The Trails by Gojira because it’s all played in the 16th note. Thank you!
if you wanna play gojira u gotta know the rhythmic grid!
I'm not even a metal guitarist but this'll be so helpful just for switching up my rythms. I'll have to add this to my practice sessions!
This would be a great lesson to revisit- especially focusing on muting during the rests, vs playing through to the next beat (playing longer notes).

3:22 Amazing rhythm for breakdowns 🤘😂
You are brilliant. Thank you for these videos
Nothing but rests is very interesting for a sleepy guitar player.

Instant sub bro. I'm just sad I saw this video now as opposed to when it was released 4 years ago
Is also fun for bass picking pattern practice

subbed...exactly what i was looking for.. Even better would be to have the bpm and/or metronome on it
There is a riff in orion by metallica that really help me with 16th notes rhythm, it’s a good riff to practice counting.
Simon B-D which riff bro?i love that somg!ipening riff or no?
@@MsDavo123 The riff at 2;12 in the song
5:55 how to: Slayer
5:02
Love the rythym lessons! i need intervention lol
Good teacher
best lesson on yt
This is really cool
very informative
That’s soooooo sick! 🤘🏾
Counting to 4 has never been this difficult
Really liked the riff and rhythm at 6:45. Kind of sounded like "Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin.
Thanks master ..
Very interesting!
a REAL teacher!
I think you just hypnotized me
the "vocals" fucking killed me lolololol
too cool man, nice job that 107 was aural twister

That pedal rocks

If you pay attention to the beat you kind of listen through the sustain and focus on the attack.
12th notes would be some kind of triplets, specifically (I think) eighth note triplets.
I'd say I'm a fairly advanced rhythm metal player, but man your lessons are so damn fun
I wonder if these rhythms with drums were recorded, randomly shuffled, then played continuously together? For ideas?
Beautiful lesson dude :》
Just 15865 views?... the world is crazy and bad distorted. Excellent lesson man, thanks!!!!
Great video again jake but how can I bring it into string skipping sequences grrrrr
awesome
Did you read my mind? I was just planning on making a chart with all the permutations and then this pops up!
semiquavers are my favourite crisps ♥
