I watched this two years ago, as an old fart trying to learn music theory. I was ploughing through Level One John Thompson method books and was into Level Two, when my teacher said I didn't feel the music. She was right, and so I went back to Level One. Actually several times. I came across this video again. I'm not going to lie and say it was easy, but I had a whole new approach. I still have problems with Ternary rhythms, but I'm ready for a long-term commitment.
This has got to be one of the best music tutorials I’ve seen on UA-cam. The perfect mix of explanation and practical demonstration/ practice. You have a new fan/ subscriber here!
Thank you so much Saher for your FABULOUS work! Your lesson design is amazing - great visuals, sound effects and narration, super clear and articulate teachings plus so accessible and fun! Much gratitude for your creative gifts and generosity... Many blessings on your continued musical magic!!! Your work is a treasure :)
Definitely the best rhythm video out there! Thank you so much - it's so helpful to be able to try it out yourself rather than just have someone talking about it for ages and not giving any exercises 😅
I find this very useful. One thing I do is use the sound MMM on the rest. Somehow this gives the mouth something to "say" on the rest (without actrually vocalising) , so its "mmm, dah, dah" or similar. Sometimes whe counting a dotted figure I will go dah-ah. The "ah" acts like an extension but it does not have a posive sound at teh beginning, making it give a kind of tied sound. SO, dor example tow dotted qurater notes (crotchets), would be dah-ah, dah-ah. A figure with a quarter note rest then two dotted quarter notes would be mm, dah-ah, dah-ah. Its an effective method as it gives the mouth something to execute on each beat
That explains why Billie Jean from Michael Jackson is simply insane. Syncopated drum beat and an amazing bass looping. Then strings, etc ... Quincy producing and MJ performing. Kinda impossible to not be a fan.
Excellent accurate simple scientific honest unique useful optimal audio visual approach to understanding and explaining rhythms. No better reference and practice video than this on whole youtube. Marvellous and novell.
fantastic explanation and lesson. I could never really get this before but wow, how you were able to give us gradual practice with the demonstrations, was quite helpful. Best ever!
Yo this and all of your other videos so far that I've seen about rhythm are just super on point and I really appreciate the editing style and the simplicity of your teaching.
You have a great way of explaining the subdividing and reading or figures. The vocalization of the beats is key here. That is how I learned to sight read was by using Modern Drummer's song of the month and just following the notes along as the song played. You start to figure the same notes and phrases can be written differently but still convey the same rhythm. New subscriber, keep up the great videos!
Thank you SO MUCH! It's helps me a lot. I was playing my bass along the video. Earlier I read some books on music theory, I understand durations but it still hard for me to sight read it well and I wanted to be sure I'm playing right each part (not only by ear and not remembering thing). I was struggling with this for a long time and then you made it clear. So you have +1 subscriber🥰
It was fun hearing this and having flashbacks of syncopated rhythms I never even realized were syncopated. During parts of the video I’m like “oh! That’s just like (X song)!” Cell Block Tango really comes to mind for some reason. The intro beat where the women are tapping their nails on the bars. I’m a total noob so I hope I’m not *completely* off, but that was coming to me during this video.
I just checked out your reference to Cell Block Tango. Oh my, what vicious lyrics! But I can see why you were reminded of that. I'd love to write something like Cell Block. I'm going to search for the score so I can study the rhythms portrayed. Awesome reference, however!
Amazing, I am having lessons but I can't understand my teachers explanation of rhythms. This vid explains it perfectly and exactly what I was looking for. Many thanks.
Alot of pop music uses syncopation and michael jackson, the king of pop, was especially good with this. His song " billy jean" had alot of syncopated rhythms.
I never heard anyone say that many "yes-es" in a video. :D Thanks a lot mate, I actually understood your explanation, after watching so many other videos.
I thought, oh come on, this is easy. Then I failed to get the later ones right, way too fast for me. Then I decided this is really cool! Thank you, I actually really enjoyed my comeuppance!!
Excellent, thank you. Lockdown time, so plenty of time to go over and over this, adjusting the video speed. I can now understand and write the syncopation, but need loads more practice in 'saying' the rhythm. Thanks!
Great video! I knew about this element in music, but I didn't know what it was called. Now it'll be much easier for me to cohesively explain this to others. Thanks!
What an amazing lesson! I don't think I've ever understood a complicated musical concept so quickly. Thank you for making this!

I already have a head start on this because I'm also a drummer so I have already accustomed myself to synocpation and rhythym in general.
Alot of pop music uses syncopation and michael jackson, the king of pop, was especially good with this. His song " billy jean" had alot of syncopated rhythms.
thankyou man, ive been trying to figure out how these bands are making these rythms, now i can apply it to my music!
I'm going to have to practice this a lot! Syncopation has already been a weak spot for me! Thank you!
