this made me recall watching my grandpa shave in a somewhat orderly, ritualized manner, long... long ago. That makes this vid surprisingly warm and special, in a way. Big thanks for putting it up.
Never would have imagined I would watch 30 minutes plus of a stranger shaving and yet I watched and listened closely throughout the whole thing. Thank you for this, my first straight razor arrives this week and figuring I should start checking out some information I thought id check for a video, it is rare on the internet that the first thing you click on is perfect. Thanks again, great video.
Thank you for making this video. The tips you provided helped. I tried straight razor shaving for the first time today. I did cut myself a little but it didn't deter me. The extra level of control and focus involved definitely takes shaving to another level. Kind of like driving manual transmission.
Thank you Gillette!!! Had it not been for that brow beating lesson on toxic masculinity I never would have come here to witness this epic video on how to actually shave like a real man! Thank you, Mr. Abrams, for this great tutorial. I'm now a straight razor man for life!
@Old Iron That's pretty cool about your razors! I finally got my first straight razor, strop, and shave soap in the mail and I was all gung-ho to dive in. But I had an awful first shave. Either the razor I got wasn't quite sharp enough, I didn't lather up enough, I didn't soak my face beforehand enough, or a combination of things. So for now I'll be ordering a whet stone and learning how to properly sharpen my blade and try again in a few days!
@Old Iron Thanks for that info. I did, indeed strop before hand, at least 20x on the cotton part and about 50-60x on the leather. The soap I got was Colonel Conks and it was difficult to get it to lather. I have to admit that I got frustrated and cheated. I tried some Barbasol after a bit of painful shaving with the other. But even though that made the glide better, it still wasn't cutting the hair. Thanks to your input I can rule out the pre-shave soak and it seems, indeed, that the razor just isn't sharp enough.
@Old Iron Oh, I only used the Barbasol out of frustration in case it was the lather that was my problem. Believe me, when I get it sorted out I plan not to cheat in the future. I confess that I did opt for a cheap razor since I have a tight budget. The brand of razor I got is Zertone. It seemed pretty sharp when I got it, but since it's my first straight razor I don't have anything to compare to. I'll try the method of shaving thin slices of the shave soap off and see if that helps me get a better lather. But first I'll be looking into having my razor sharpened or sharpening it myself to see if that improves matters.
@@pattyorigami it's not the soap. I broke a bar of Safeguard in half and shaved with it in my mug. Not great but worked. It's the BLADE. It's not the right sharpness. Sounds like you might be over-stropping.
Thank you sir! I started using a shavette and will use your tutorial to try learn how to shave myself without creating a blood bath, which happened yesterday 😁
Hey, I came here looking for help after my 1st shave took about an hour and I had to abandon and go and finish with a disposable razor. You made that look so easy and stressless and now I'm inspired to give it another go in a few days. Thank you so much you've made a real difference :)
Bloody good tutorial. I'm convincing friends that are not used to shaving to wet shave. We are men of colour and tend to have coarse or curly hair. I've been wet shaving and have no bumps and smooth skin. I send videos like this to show good technique and prep.
Do you guys generally prefer electric? I've been there, and got wicked razor burn. Not to mention, I looked like total chooch for work, lol! Wet shaves for me, before and after that fiasco! 😂
Watched this video about 2 years ago when I first started shaving with a straight razor came back and watched it again and picked up a few new things. Definitely worth a rewatch from time to time as you get better with a razor!!!
This video transformed my straight razor shave. It showed me that I was shaving at too great an angle before. Today I shaved at a sharper angle and I finally got that extremely close shave I was hoping for.
Cop that Gillette! Straight razors will be cutting your sales and profits! This gentleman is showing us what our grandfathers did! Thanks for the demo! Lost art! One thing I picked up was just take your time, this ain’t a rush job for beginners! Just Subbed!
Love this video. I haven't shaved with a straight razor in 20 years myself cause I usually go to the barber. But I just got all new equipment and gonna start doing it again due to the quarantine.
Join the "Brothers Of The Blade." LOL.. It's an ego-boost, BUT that feeling is soon overcome with the excitement and pride of a great shave, the likes of which you can't get otherwise.. Let no one kid you: You CAN do it. And do it well. Those who make fun of you at first are the ones scared to try it themselves.
I"ve been using a DE safety razor for about three years. My wife gave it to me as a Christmas gift, and she loves the results. This video is encouraging me to take that next step to a straight razor.
Thankyou very much for posting this video, I feel much more comforatble and wiser for watching it, without sounding corny it felt like the lesson I wanted with my dad but never had the chance to have.
I just wanted to say that I appreciate the way in which you approached this topic. I have been wanting to use a straight razor for a few months now but never knew who to ask about how one was properly used, so your video really helped me.
there is no better tutorial for this when it comes to doing it on oneself and not on costumers. I did it with derby razor now for the first time after watching this video and I am sold.
Great video. I know how to do both, one is for an experience which is the straight razor. The other is more in and out and more time efficient. And one of course takes time and practice. But if you can master a straight razor you will always look great especially if you have a beard like me where you can line it up through out the week instead of looking like a wolf and a mess.
I’ve been using a DE razor for the last 15year and finally bought my first straight razor. I have a beard so I only shave my neck. I just went at it today and didn’t do to bad. Definitely drew a little blood so figured maybe I’d watch a video. This is a good one for sure
Thanks for this tutorial, you have made feel more confident just by how thorough and informative your explanations are. I hadn’t shaved in over 3 years, I had a massive, glorious, majestic beard. Then the coronavirus hit, and, because I work in the community and am an “essential staff”, I have to wear a mask. And in order to wear the mask properly, there can’t be any hair between the mask and your face. Again, thank you for teaching me how to shave again, especially now in these trying times
I bought one and shaved with one for the first time today. My ambition was greater than your advise, so I got a couple of cuts on my chin, but thanks for making these videos, they have helped me a lot.
I'm actually so happy to hear that simply spanning the learning process over a few days is fine. I ended up doing the learning process for the same problem I was having today (in that my Adam's apple sticks out pretty far from my otherwise tight skin that makes a dip in the skin). I did pretty well everywhere else compared to last time, but was so focused on those two spots that I was getting frustrated. Now that the obvious has been pointed out, I'm content with learning bit by bit until I can finish my shave with my straight. P.S: I'm happy I am going from a safety razor to this, because angle is very important.
I've been trying to learn how to shave with a straight razor, and bought a cheap one with replaceable blades to practice with. This is EXTREMELY helpful. My strokes have been way too short, my angle was all wrong, and even my order of operations was horrible. I feel like I'm going to have a much easier time next time I shave. What a fantastic tutorial!
Absolutely one of the best tutorials on straight shaving. I am in to them for a month and wish I was earlier. I come back to learn more techniques and listen Lynn's advice rewinding as I want to and then try. Great video!
I just got my first straight razor yesterday for christmas. I've been trying to find a video that really exsplains it for a newbie. This was great, thank you!
Lynn, best straight razor video I have seen to date. I like the idea of just starting out a little at a time. Thanks for taking the time out to create an informative video.
Thank you SO MUCH for going though the steps so thoroughly! So many people skip important info, expect you to shave perfectly after a 10 minute video, or don't stress how slight the angle is!
I want to thank you for your information and instruction on the shave! I have had a shave system ,brush, soap everything in a drawer ready to go..Your video gave me what I needed to put the blade to my throat, courage!! Lol..I got through my first shave with one nick and some minor touch up with a bic..Next time I will complete the shave..Thanks .
Thank You for this video. I can do this now! I finally got a good straight razor but when I tried to shave with it, I thought I had wasted my money, or more likely that I just did not know how to do it. After watching your video here, I have been able to shave with it. The key, and I would never have figured this out, is to keep the blade dry! As you say, you've gotta learn to use your tools. When I just want to touch up my neck a bit I do a dry shave with it and I can actually see the whiskers flying off!! I'm waiting to get a strop now. Thanks again Mr Abrams for teaching. You are a good teacher.
Ive watched about tem tutorials on straight shaving and you are the only guy that explains it in detail . especially the up stroke. I have to shave my entire throat and neck area with upstrokes. Everyone else shaves all down strokes.. Your the only guy that changed directions . im getting better. A few cuts lol keeping my handy white stick thingy handy lol. Thanks again for the ONLY fully explained straight shave tutorial on youtube. Your pal from Cape Breton , Nova Scotia.-Jonathan
I'm getting into straight razors and was referred by a gentleman on FB page to you. I must say that your video was amazing. The time you took to show things made me just that much more comfortable.
Never did a straight razor shave before or knew anyone that did, I bought everything, with my razor from srd i am now an avid straight razor shaver. This video by itself taught me almost everything
Thanks for the great breakdown ! Just got my first straight razor last week after years and years of electric razors , disposable razors, etc. Really enjoying my Dovo Bismarck so far, and trying to figure out how to get the most out of a shave. I’m excited to try out many of the techniques you displayed in this video. Thanks again, Cheers!
Great tutorial. I'm 26 and have been looking to get a defined shave. The straight razor is very intimidating, but you make it look refreshing after practice. Thanks for the post
I love this gentleman's videos - and site! Excellent especially for me a newbie to straight razor shaving! I am afraid of the stropping technique and have not even begun investigating honing techniques yet! Thanks for the great video!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video, very informative. I'm 22, bought my first razor kit and fought through the pain of the scrape for the last couple months, and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. It's all angle, as well as that warm brush trick. That was a great tip. My roughed-up neck and jaw line thank you
Great video! I should have watched this video before starting. I watched other videos and made the mistake of not just being satisfied with the sideburns. I then progressed on to colour my chin red and stopped at that point. I will take your advice of only doing the sideburns for the next few shaves and slowly progress from there. Thanks for the video.
Just bought my first razor. This was a great tutorial. will "break my face in" with the suggestions you put out. Thanks for taking your time out of your busy schedule to demonstrate the proper way of shaving.
So glad I bumped into this vid. Tons of information, tips and techniques. Really informative and I enjoyed watching it . Going to try the info gathered in my next shave with my Feather AC shavette and my Kamisori. Thanks
Probably one of the better straight razor "how to" videos out there. While I've been using various vintage DE razors for a long time, I've just recently gotten into straight razors. This video helped solve my harsh shave problems. I had too much of an angle. The trick of ogling the width of the spine and using that to set your angle worked for me. I had to stop the video midway through and do an early evening shave with my vintage F. Koeller Co Sta-Sharp razor. Smooth as glass! Thanks Lynn!
Thanks for your video Lynn Abrams . Im 20 and I have been growing my facial hair for the last 2-3 months and over night, I have fallen in love with the idea of using a straight razor. Already purchased one and just waiting for it to be delivered! Cant wait :D Il be sure to use all of your tips and tricks for when I get to try mine out.
Great tutorial video, I'm just starting out with the Feather Kamisori style razor and this video seems like God sent. Another thing that needs appreciation in this video is the cameraman's skills, just so stable and zoom in at the right time.
Thank you so much Lynn! I just bought my first kit and, although I read a tutorial, SEEING it done was definitely needed. You explained everything very well and I loved your added tips/tricks, you've no doubt acquired over years and years of straight edge shaving. Well, with your wisdom and training I''m off to shave for the very first time with a strait edge razor! Wish me luck and thanks again brother!
This is one of the best, most detailed videos on UA-cam for shaving. I’m having a miserable time trying to get my lower lip area baby smooth….at least without copious amounts of blood. I feel like I need to go against the grain, which would be almost straight up, and angled outwards, but whenever I try, I cut myself, and switch over to the double sided safety.
Very informative video! I watched it a few times before actually attempting this and I was able to do it without cutting myself. By the way, nice ring Brother. Greetings from Ohio Freemasonry!
Thanks Brother! We have decided to go back to the old way of doing things around our house and shaving is no different. I always like getting instruction from a brother.
Thanks Lynn, I tried to go all in this morning and it was a disaster. Your video is super helpful. I'll try again tomorrow. Also, looking at your ring, it's good so see a man who has been to the east making these videos. I learned about straight razors from my brethren. Thanks for your help!
I am glad that I found this post. I have been using a shavette for a few years now and I am thinking about graduating to a straight edge razor. Your tutorial was like a refresher course for me. Great job, thanks!
Thank you. The last time that I used a SE, I was forty years younger. Some looked at me and said "when did they make shaving with a chainsaw an Olympic event". Trying it again.
hi lynn grate video as always. ive been using my new dovo 24k gold wash 5/8th s/ razor for 4 weeks now and can go against the grain. your right it is all technique i will never go back to those disposable razors again. the only thing im struggling with is the stroping. but as they say practice makes perfect. i love the whole process. totally relaxes me for a new day or evening. 👍👍
Received my Dovo razor, strop, and oil from Straight Razor Designs yesterday and had my first straight razor shave this morning. Some very good advice in this video. Lynn makes it look easy, but I think it will be worth it.
Brother, thank you so much for this video! Always great to see a Brother sharing knowledge! I just got ahold of a beautiful-condition Wade & Butcher straight razor that I am looking forward to learning. I need a strop now, but I think I’m almost good to go with the theory. Now to practice the practice. This video helped a ton for wrapping my head around the motions!
Well, I just threw some money on a new razor. Hopefully it's the last one I ever buy. Thanks Gilette, Now I can get more in touch with a real way of shaving!
Thanks for a great video for beginners. The best ive seen, hands down. Wish i saw it before my first shave last night with my 5/8. Took a bit but when my face was done had no blood, whole face was shaved. My neck was terably red but my after shave treatment made me look normal. What an art form. Love it. After the shave i used an alum stone and after it dried, used a non alcohol based after shave balm. Worked great for my extremely sensitive skin. Thanks again Lynn
Thank you, Brother Abrams. Just got a shavette to try out. Been a DE guy for 20+ years. Did two strokes and sliced myself both times with the tip corner. This is going to take some practice and blood to get the hang of.
I used a straight razor for the first time today. Well, I shaved my giant beard off. Only cut my self a few times :) But I struggled with looking in the mirror and moving my hand in the proper direction which is what led to me cutting my self. Other than that much faster and better shave than the cartridges!
Thorough instruction, no fluff and covers all I need to know to begin straight razor shaving. Thank you. That being said , your scar has me paying VERY close attention on what to do and esp what not to do. Starting with single pass on sideburns
@@LynnSAbrams brother, I can relate to that basal cell carcinoma. I go to my dermatologist on a regular basis and on more than one occasion, she has removed a spot, (or two)…..
I would buy you a beer in a heartbeat. Thanks for a great video
Never did a straight razor shave before or knew anyone that did, I bought everything, with my razor from srd i am now an avid straight razor shaver. This video by itself taught me almost everything
I don't even shave but this guy is the man.
Just bought my first straight razor and your video was so informative! Thank you so much!
Hey Lynn. Just viewed your video for your straight razors. So cool! Great job on the narration party also.
Thanks
A really terrific tutorial, thank you for posting this.
Thank you so much Sir.
I‘m 18 and this is the first time I‘m using a straight one.
Greetings from Germany
Thank you! Just bought a straight razor and tried it without knowledge, didn't go so well. I watched your video, much better results!
This was very informative, thank you for being so thorough. I'm straight edge shaving for the first time today...wish me luck!
+Chris Wilson hi there, just wondering how your first time using a straight razer was like? im 19 and wondering if i should also use it.
+dead awake3 Yeah it went well, I'm still alive and everything! I still use it all the time. Takes a bit longer to shave but I really enjoy it! :)
I learned how to shave from this video back in 2015. Hope you're doing great man.
Like listening to the godfather of shaving!!! I payed extra close attention! Awesome presenter
Very informative video! I watched it a few times before actually attempting this and I was able to do it without cutting myself.
By the way, nice ring Brother. Greetings from Ohio Freemasonry!
That is how you know that "masonry" fell through centuries from a closed network of elites to vulgar herding of random idiots.
Thanks Brother! We have decided to go back to the old way of doing things around our house and shaving is no different. I always like getting instruction from a brother.
Amazing tutorial man. My wife got me a kit for Christmas and it was your video that made me confident enough not to slice my head off =)
Thanks Lynn, I tried to go all in this morning and it was a disaster. Your video is super helpful. I'll try again tomorrow. Also, looking at your ring, it's good so see a man who has been to the east making these videos. I learned about straight razors from my brethren. Thanks for your help!
Recently invested in a Thiers Issard carbon blade straight razor for my first ever straight shave. Thanks for the video.
@Lynn Abrams, your video's are the best! Bummer you stopped a few years ago!
Received my Dovo razor, strop, and oil from Straight Razor Designs yesterday and had my first straight razor shave this morning. Some very good advice in this video. Lynn makes it look easy, but I think it will be worth it.
Thank you. I needed this video for intended purposes. You exceeded expectation. Great teaching.
Thanks Lynn,I always knew I wanted to go back to a straight razor, but didn't really know how to use one,so now I'll be back.
I send my thanks to you Lynn from the northernmost Capital in the world, Iceland. This method is really helping my sensitive skin
Excellent.
Hard bit is getting control with the left hand but its all practise I suppose.
Thanks.
Only cut my self a few times :)
But I struggled with looking in the mirror and moving my hand in the proper direction which is what led to me cutting my self.
Other than that much faster and better shave than the cartridges!
Its more fun with a straight razor
Thorough instruction, no fluff and covers all I need to know to begin straight razor shaving. Thank you. That being said , your scar has me paying VERY close attention on what to do and esp what not to do. Starting with single pass on sideburns
M R The scar is from a Basil Cell Carcinoma. 😄 You still need to pay attention. 👍
@@LynnSAbrams brother, I can relate to that basal cell carcinoma. I go to my dermatologist on a regular basis and on more than one occasion, she has removed a spot, (or two)…..
I am now paying for spending way too much time in the sun playing golf, swimming, or playing baseball years ago without applying sun screen. Oh well, Keep getting your checkups on a regular basis!
