- OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:Doug and Stacy hand shovel 20 yards of OMRI raised bed compost and get their raised beds off and running for 2016.
We also go on a sawdust run for our yearly supply for our composting toilet and other uses around the homestead.

Some constructive criticism for you Doug, I would have filled the bottom of the beds with about 2 inches of gravel for better drainage since they are a bit taller, just an idea for the next time. Still very cool

have you heard of Hugulkultre? You can pile it as high as you want and be gardening standing up. And you can do it for free if you are smart

I love sawdust. We use it for our composting toilet, when camping, in the chicken coop and run, and in washer drums, I use as raised beds, in the garden. It is even great to use as a filler, in a really big planter. Much lighter to move than dirt, and it will eventually break down.

Okkkaayyy... I was just talking about the dang moles and field mice... I'm thinking that when the season is over we are gonna have to redo my raised beds! Chicken wire!! In Connecticut I haven't seen many moles or shews that can't past through chicken wire. I've found it best using 1/2" rolled welded galv wire fencing.
My back hurts just watching you labor with the shovel. You're a beast, doing the work of two men. Respect!!

This was the first video of yours I watched when I started planning for raised beds in March and now mine are built, one filled with Blueberries, Cranberries, a Blackberry and Elderberries. The second one now filled almost with summer veggies and herbs :-) YOu inspired me and now I am growing my own food, cannot wait to start harvesting and fermenting my own produce. Like you I also had a hick-up with my compost soil, I paid for and they never delivered, some sort of family crisis and in the end I got compost soil from another supplier and trying to get my money back from the initial supplier

We do the Mittleider Garden Method with our garden. Some of our beds the growing medium is nothing but sand and sawdust (just top off the sawdust every year, never have to add more sand). Other beds are in the native soil that we amended with peat moss, sand (very heavy clay soil here) and rabbit manure with sawdust in it also. We spend less than 15 min a week weeding all beds (3 - 3'x30', 4 - 4'x8' and 1 - 18"x30' = this one is our tomato bed with a T-frame for growing vertical and we plant the tomato plants every 9"). We fertilize once a week and only need to water for 2 minutes or less (depending on bed size) each morning per bed. We have tripled our harvest from previous years after trying square foot gardening and traditional gardening. I put the rabbit manure directly on our raspberry plants all winter and out of 4 bushes we get nearly 3 gallons of berries every year. Also add the rabbit gold to the strawberries after they have produced their fruit in the summer through fall and we get bumper crop the next year. From 40 plants we get around a 5 gallon bucket worth that is turned into jelly, sliced with sugar added (ice cream topping) and frozen or just sliced and frozen for deserts.

Really cool stuff! This is a great video. I did my raised beds a very similar way, only one cut in the lumber to make a rectangle and have no lumber waste. We don't have nearly the room you do, so everything is closer together but still leaving room to get a wheelbarrow between the beds. Another difference is that our "soil" is a geologic formation so we have no problem with burrowing pests. But roots from the neighbors yards grow into the boxes, so I use weed cloth at the bottom instead of chicken wire to slow the root growth down a bit. So keep your situation in mind when you set your boxes up.

I never had problems with moles until recently. I will start adding the chicken wire in the bottom of the beds to prevent any future problems.

Doug, you need to look into the practice of hugulculture. Better for your garden and you save lots of money on commercial filling for your beds. This is for anyone considering raised beds.
Great video, Doug! I love the raised beds and will be showing Aaron. LOL We are looking to switch from "traditional" gardening to raised beds since we're not as young as we used to be.
+Double "B" Homestead Well filling those beds with dirt isn't for the young either. Or the small. It would take me a month of Sundays to get all those filled with dirt. lol

Great information, my wife loves our raised beds.
We live in a somewhat isolated rural part of Colorado so even if we could find cedar lumber it would be very expensive. We are taking out the old corrals on our small homestead, part of an original dust bowl homestead, and a lot of the boards that were used actually appear to be still good and made of cedar so we are re-purposing them. We are in our first year of using the Back to Eden garden method hoping this will help us with less water use, as well as many other wonderful things about this method. Shalom!

Really enjoyed your videos. I have been doing research on raised beds for my Degree. (Lucky to be old and have the professor want you to study at your farm "Internship") One of the things that I have found is the raised bed typically does not cycle the P and K. This is caused by the fact that P and K at elements that are taken on the up take better than down. When you are designing your raised bed having the water cycle to come up from under the bed also will make a stronger plant system. I have a lot more if your interested but the bottom line is keep it up we need more doing it.

I like it that your homestead is wide open and flat. I am challenged by the mountainous nature of the contours of my land. Very difficult to plan my layout with. I'm so jealous.

Might you check out Permacuture techniques and how to do swalls (spelling?) how to keep and store water and planting below and bwhind the mounds also hugeulculture raised mounds with trunks and wood and soil/ aged compost on top and plant right into that. Straw, wood chips, mulch...Back to Eden gardening ;) You can do it !

New to your channel. I love the info on sawmills and raised beds....I used 3 foot metal spikes for the sides of my bed then drilled screws to secure. Worked well with leveling too.

Hi love your video, beds are beautiful. Too late now but next time guide truck back could have dumped directly over first bed. Then remove excess scraping into wheel barrow, and all excess spill overs. Would have totally buried first one haha...

Come now Doug, load that shovel:)) If the 'organic dirt' doesn't have rock dust, you'll need to add it and better while you're filling the beds than after. Rock dust from glacier activity.
Wow, you sure work hard. Harder than you need to work. Do you own a wheel barrow, and know how to build a rudimentary ramp? You can get more done like that.
I'm too cheap to buy wood for raised beds....Garage door installers are always looking for a place to get rid of wooden garage door panels. They scrap out the metal ones for cash, so those are hard to get free.
I found I had to go only 3 feet wide, as I have a very bad back, and with only three feet wide, you don't have to reach as far.

We have mostly raised beds since we have 1/2acre urban homestead. My goal with it is to plan food and flowers everywhere. Then there is a stealth plan for chickens and goats...wait, can you have stealth goats???? Film at 11.

Wow! Maybe if I sold my boats, cars, and motorcycles I could afford to buy enough ceder to build a few raised beds.
No need to do all that, I built three 8’x4’x16” raised beds and the cedar was under $100 because I went to an Amish sawmill. The soil was more expensive than the wood.
I don't know what area you're in but do you think you you will give peach trees, lemon trees, etc?

Doug, chicken wire will rust out quickly. I used hardware cloth on the bottom of mine.
off grid in a modern way...why did you choose raised beds? Raised beds are nice and I have thought of that alternative because my soil sometimes does not cooperate. But now that i have been nursing my soil to a good productive soil I think I'll be good this year.

In a perfect world there are no short handled shovels.
the chicken wire should have been out down first, before the wood beds. Any animal can just go to the bottom perimeter and enter and eat the roots of what you want. It would be easy to push up the chicken wire at the sides.
also the holes in chicken wire are too large.....gophers can get through or even chew through the thin wire

Use sawdust it to store root vegetables through the winter as well.

I wish. we have a pulp mill near us. they buy up all our local saw dust.

I have done this in our back yard here in South Central Pennsylvania with our raised bed gardens and Perennial flower gardens. It has truly been a work of Love and I am always adding on to our gardens, because a gardeners work is never done.
