  • In this video we take a thorough look at the H&K P2000 series, from history, design, contract requirements, models, variants and features. Along the way, you'll learn more about this series of pistols than you can in any other single source format and hopefully come to appreciate what I believe to be the most underrated pistol series in the H&K product catalog.
    As discussed, here is my USP series video, which I highly recommend you watch prior to the P2000 series video:

    I love my P2000SK. It's my first pistol, and I haven't fallen out of love with it since. It's just so freakin' aesthetic. Late-90s and early 2000s HK pistols are peak aesthetic!

    P2000 was definitely a pistol that flew under the radar for me. I was of course aware that it existed but never really thought much about it either positive or negative. Then on a whim early last year I ended up with one in a trade, and it has since largely usurped my other carry guns.

    James, thanks for this in-depth review on my favorite CCW. For me, it has been the Goldilocks solution after years of searching. If I were to design a CCW, I can’t think of anything that would surpass the P2000. While the world has largely moved on to striker-fired handguns, those of us who appreciate the advantages of a hammer-fired CCW consider the P2000 one of the best.

    35:04 Being one of those old S&W Model 19 & 686 revolver guys, I was issued one of the first .40S&W USP Compacts when the U.S. Border Patrol first issued them to air crewmen and plainclothes duty in ‘04 to replace the Beretta .40S&W 96D Brigadiers. In ‘06 I turned in the USP and was issued a P2000 .40 compact that I carried until ‘15 when it exceeded 10,000 rounds and still functioning like a champ. Carried P2000 compact #2 until I retired in ‘18. I immediately ordered a .40S&W P2000 compact LEM for daily carry.
    EXCELLENT VIDEO. Being a gun toter and not an armorer you educated me in a weapons system that I’ve be using for 20 years.

    The P2000 is my EDC. It’s dimensions are great! I ended up sanding down one of the mags baseplates to be able to have a flush fit mag. The texture on the sides of the grip remind me of the MP7 grip.

    Absolutely incredibly detailed insight into the P2000 to include USP, USPc, and both P2000 and P2000SK pistols. I have a significant number of HK pistols, starting from 1985 when I bought my first P7M8 largely due to the ambidextrous design. I then purchased a USPc in 45 which, although not ambi, gives me an appreciation for that era of HK pistol designs. Then I bought a new P30, two new VP9s, and lastly a new P2000SK. Thanks to the interchangeability of many HK pistols I then expanded my caliber choices on my P2000SK to have a 40SW slide and barrel for the SK and then finally a 357Sig barrel. The interchangeability is simplified by the magazines, as well, as the 357Sig rounds fit inside a 40SW magazine for the SK. I continued with my collecting onto my VP9s pistols by adding a VP40 slide and barrel to turn it into a VP40. My latest acquisition is the VP9 Match with the longer slide and barrel, and the cutout for a red dot sight (in my case I chose the Swedish Aimpoint ACRO). Despite years of HK ownership and use, I learned many more things from your video. You did a great job! One more piece of RARELY GOOD NEWS is that California has added the VP, VP9L and VP9SK to the approved handgun roster! I suspect that is because they may drop the P2000 lineup someday. On my Calif CCW I have a P7M8, my USPc 45, and the P2000SK which I carry 90% of the time due to the size. Again, an incredible video, worth every minute.

    I agree the P2000 is one of the most underrated handguns but not just for HK but across brands. I think the P2000 and the PX4 storm are both some of the most amazing and greatly passed over firearms (P2k does look much better though).
    I didn’t know about the P2k magazine disconnect, I’m one that always looks to remove them but would consider adding this one.

    You convinced me to buy a P2000. I saw how much higher the prices were now compared to just a few months ago and I looked at all of the evidence we have on whether the P2000 is going to be discontinued soon, and I think you are correct, I think it is going to be off the line in the near future and I decided that the p2000 is so incredible in its own ways that I didn't want to lose the chance to own one for a reasonable price. They're already like 50%-75% more expensive than they were like a year ago, and I don't wanna be the sucker who missed out and now has to pay over $1000 for one
    I found one in V2, LE bundle for $675+fees, no tax, new and I snagged it. I figure it's not gonna get any better than that.

I'd be excited to get my hands on a 9mm V3. This is a gun that I sort of passed by, but hearing about all the innovation and iterative development that went into it, and learning about just how superior the build quality of these HK blaster is, really made me want one. I just got the P2000SK LEM heavy variant. Changed it to the light variant put in the nickel plated sear spring and installed the Grey Guns short reset kit and extended paddle mag release. I think it keeps up with all the single stack micro 9s in many ways for a deep carry gun. It’s still slimmer than my Glock gen 3 26. I do plan on getting the P2000 light LEM variant with the GG SRS kit. I’m glad it’s still on the unconstitutional Ca gun roster. My only other HK pistol is the grey frame USP 45 also converted to light LEM which is another great shooter!

    I always assumed that if I was gonna carry a hammer gun, that it was gonna be a DA/SA or my 1911. But I always a big fan of Walther, and had heard all the legends about how good the P99 was, both in 9mm and .40, and I happened to stumble onto a used Gen 1 in .40 at a gun shop for $300. I thought this was a pretty good price considering that it was almost pristine on the outside and looked like it had only run a few hundred rounds at most on the inside.
    What I didn't know beforehand was how much I would come to love that trigger. The P99 has a trigger very very similar to this one. You can use the double action or you can use the single action, although it uses a different firing system, but on the user side, it's very similar. And it includes a decocker, which the V7 LEM I just ordered does not have one.
    I already had guns like the CZ P-01, a Double action 1911, single action 1911, and a .38 special revolver with a realllllly heavy trigger, but that P99 trigger completely changed my outlook on carry guns and inspired me to get a USP Compact 9mm in V7 Light LEM configuration.
    I had actually avoided HK for a long time because I listened to all the Fudd online about how they are overpriced, not worth it, outdated, bad triggers, all hype, and that I should 'buy cheap guns for my first firearms and then decide later if you wanna get the best...', and I stupidly fell for that advice and just kept moving up the price bracket until I got a VP9, and that instantly destroyed my appreciation of pretty much every other striker fire I had -- Shield Plus, CZ P-10F, Glock 19, Glock 17, LCP Max; the only one that I think stands up to the VP9 is the Walther PDP/PDP-F, that's a really great pistol.
    Regardless, I was so impressed by that VP9 at only $475, that I knew I shouldn't have listened to all those morons online telling me that they are too expensive and not worth it. You barely have to pay that much more than other guns and you get something far superior and much more special.
    Yes the USP Compact 9mm V7 was pricy, especially since I got a new one with the LE bundle, but I got it for $925 and felt like that was a fair price for such a good gun new from HK. Should be arriving at my FFL tomorrow and I'll get to really properly test it myself this weekend. I love my VP9 and my friend's HK45 (he bought one after seeing my VP9 and then trying out his stepdad's HK45) and I expect to enjoy the USP compact just about as much as those. And if I don't like the LEM, well then no biggie, because I can just swap in a V1 no problem.
    I appreciate all you do Teufelshund and you really do an amazing job talking about these guns and what makes them so special. I hope you keep doing these kinds of breakdowns forever!

    WOW! IMO this is BY FAR the most informative and educational breakdown of the P2000 line up that I’ve seen or read! Prior to seeing this video, I wouldn’t have been able to explain why the pistol has been so accurate and reliable other than it being H&K with their reputation for reliability and accuracy. I have a V2 SK that I was fortunate enough to come across on the used market. It wasn’t cheap in comparison to other popular striker fire pistols of the same size and capacity. The only thing I was aware of at the time was H&Ks reputation and a rough understanding of the LEM system it had. For me, the piston quickly became my favorite sub compact CA compliant that I’ve shot. Accuracy, speed and reliability have been excellent in my experience with it. That you for the education and understanding of the engineering and quality that gives H&K its reputation. I appreciate the pistol even more now.

    • @teufelshundtactical
      @teufelshundtactical  3 місяці тому +1

      It’s pretty much just the weight of the trigger pull. That’s a difficult thing to “demonstrate” in a video, but the weights of each variant are available online. The simple answer of course is the light is light, the medium is medium and the heavy is heavy. You really have to try them to appreciate the difference.

    The only issue ive had (so far) with my P2000 that I've had for about 9 years is a broken trigger return spring after maybe 15k rounds. Not really sure what happened because I didn't really have the knowledge (or courage) to do the troubleshooting/"gunsmithing" myself but the gunsmith swapped my trigger return spring to the "heavy" one and its been fine since then. I just installed the 10 lb hammer spring, grayguns SRS, grayguns trigger, and switched out the heavy return spring for the stock trigger return spring so we'll see how she runs. I also have it ported and it runs so flat with the ports, it's awesome. I stippled it myself as well and its 1000% better now. Can't wait to see how it shoots after the trigger upgrades.

    Man I love all the in depth knowledge you have on this platform, I know a lot about HK but I always learn something new. I believe the p2000 is underrated in HK's lineup. Sort of the middle child. The P2k to me is my ideal ccw, I carry my v3 9mm every day with the 17 round p30 mag with x grip extension. Which kinda makes it a p30 in size but I can have a shorter grip if I want to with the 13 round mag. It's the best of both worlds. Love it so much I got a second one as a backup that just sits in the safe if something were to ever happen to my primary. I have 1,500 rounds through mine this year. I trust this to the end of the world and back. I even put a 10lb hammer spring in mine to lighten up the da pull a bit. Thinking about doing the gray guns short reset kit, I've heard great things about this I don't think it affects the reliability from what I've seen.

    So amped to see the return of these long form armorer reviews. I really was kinda of disappointed you seemed to have moved away from them, but I was worried I'd seem ungrateful for all the work you did if I said anything. I've done just a few vids that do not approach a level of nuance or length like this but apart from them not being all that great just doing all the editing on just a 10 minute video is much more of a task than it appears, I shudder to imagine how long this took to make.

    just got one of the p2000sk in fowdy. its really hard to find a polygonal barrel handgun now days. i think its important once you go to the subcompact to get as much fps out of the shorter barrels. not too worried about accuracy in a subcompact. really starting to doubt the terminal performance of 9mm after seeing so much gsw trauma in the ER. probably only a matter of time until whats old is new and whats new is old.

    Overlooked and underappreciated. The P2000 really is the unsung hero of HK's pistol lineup. Wonderful video, but I have 2 questions though James. Do you know why the trigger guard was redesigned with the slanted front for the SK? And why has there never been a factory threaded barrel option?

    • @teufelshundtactical
      @teufelshundtactical  8 місяців тому +2

      Thanks. If you look at the SK trigger guard, it is in the same style as the original (Euro spec) P2000. The change to the US Spec P2000 was made to match the USP Compact trigger guard, since both the USP Compact and P2000 were being submitted to the Homeland Security contract and could then use the same holster. No such requirement was present for changing the P2000SK.

    • @teufelshundtactical
      @teufelshundtactical  8 місяців тому +2

      Oh yeah, and no threaded barrel, again, because no contract requirement. The other weapons that H&K has offered a threaded barrel model, have all been because of specific contract requirements for one.

    living in CA my options were insanely limited...first moment i held the p2000 V3 (not SK) I knew it was for me. balanced, fit well in the hand, compact yet not snappy to shoot and hasn't had a single malfunction in my first 1000 rounds. A rear decocker should be the go-to for every pistol, way better than a side safety/decocker.
    My only complaints are the disassembly is a little more difficult than other pistols, and the reset is a little longer than I would like out of the box. i'm looking to set it up with a short reset kit.

    You mention the option to get +2rd for HK magazines. How does that work for the 10rd and 13rd mags? I have been testing the +2rd (15rd to 17rd) follower, spring and locking plate in the the 13rd (now 15rd) USPc magazine body and base plate, and so far it has worked great but I cant imagine, that you can use the same new spring in the 10rd mag body.

    • @teufelshundtactical

      The magazines are all new. Looking the same as before, but now with extra witness holes and extra internal capacity. As mentioned in the video, if you have the original mags, you. A purchase the retrofit kit from H&K and swap out the internals for the same capability, just obviously without the witness holes on your original mag body.

    Firstly, thanks for continuing this great series!
    Over the years, I've read plenty of opinions regarding the USPc's "better" trigger compared to the P2000's. Sometimes it's brought up that HK redesigned the trigger mechanism when moving from the USP series, but no source is provided on that. (I don't believe you mentioned it either in this video). Have you heard of this complaint before, and is it at least based on a real change?

    • @teufelshundtactical
      @teufelshundtactical  8 місяців тому +2

      Triggers are a very personal thing and everyone has their opinion. Sadly, those opinions, are not always based on real experience. There is nothing different of significance between a USP Compact and a P2000 of the same variant (meaning compared against DA/SA to DA/SA or LEM Light to LEM Light).
