Most excellent review Sir, still surprised consideing how many soccer games were released on the Neo Geo, there's only one American Football. And not a single Tennis game. the '90s loved Tennis games too!
@@goatbone if you equate pong and tennis than the neo geo is the king of the genre... windjammers, bang bead, flip shot and i guess even super dodge ball would kinda count.. well i dont know how many tennis games were on wii or ps2 so never mind...
Tennis would be an opportunity for some of the Neo Geo indie devs. I'm bored of fighting games and shmups and match 3 puzzle clones. I loved playing Super Tennis on SNES, imagine how good a Neo Geo tennis game could look.
the thing that always got me about this game is how every body looks like their "pulsing" as they're waiting for the hike or the awkward way they jump up and down when happy...
Another great Neo Geo sports game review as usual and much more fair than some other reviews I've read online. Now I can't wait for Baseball Stars 2 along with the 4 prior to it: Sengoku 2, King of Monsters 2, Thrash Rally and Crossed Swords. The next two should be interesting to say the least
I like Football Frenzy Alec. I mean, I tough it was a well made game that I use to play in a Dairy Queen in New Jersey growing up in the 90's. Sadly, I was the only one that ever played the game, and the arcade distributer said to me once that he lost money on adding this game in the unit I played it on. Too bad. Gamers miss out on this fun title to play...Thank you for sharing this with us bro. Keep up the great work for sure. 8^) Anthony...
Hi Anthony. Good story. That sucks about no one playing it. I would have thought a Football game would be popular at a Dairy Queen, if the other games were doing okay.
Who had a Neo Geo back in 1990-'91? I didnt know anybody who owned one, here on Australia. In fact I didn't know it existed until about a ten years ago.
I always look forward to your reviews, yet again another great video! For some reason ebay dudes have been trying to sell this game for way too much lately. I can't wait to get a copy EVENTUALLY.
This early era of the Neo Geo truly is fascinating to me. SNK and their partner devs were still trying to find their collective calling with the system and trying many genres, as well as still exploring the vast potential of the hardware. As much as I do adore many of its fighting games and the Metal Slug series, I also find it a bit sad that the Neo Geo's output got so pigeonholed like that. Neo Turf Masters is a rare glimpse into the level of later-era polish and energy other genres could've experienced if they stayed strong on the platform. I sincerely still consider Neo Turf Masters to be the best "straightforward" golf game ever made (i.e. not the type with tons of extra bells and whistles like Mario Golf, which was also good) and a gold standard for audiovisual presentation for sports games.
Although it is a simpler and less realistic game, I much prefer Tecmo Bowl (arcade version) to Football Frenzy due to its extremely simple but snappy controls and its reliance on bluff and mind games rather than set plays (i.e. AI behavior). And above all its 2v2 mode makes it an incredible party game. Football Frenzy does have a pretty nice presentation and killer soundtrack.
Hi Alec, Welp, another fantastic year of the Super Bowl. And what better way to share this video again by posting it up on the Neo-Geo thread to re-enjoy this gem of an upload from you bro. I done so as of now to celebrate the occasion Thank you for all your hard work you dedicate your time for the community bro. Always a pleasure to see you in action my good man. 8^) Anthony...
Kinda makes sense. American Football really has nearly zero foothold in the rest of the world, whereas baseball is very popular in Japan and soccer is extremely popular as a global sport.
2:18 It is a violent sports. Also do teams normally have 40-50 players and constantly sub with 11 on field?? I don't know much about American Football but that is truly mindblowing for me.
That's what I used to think, but I came to realize it's catchier, more memorable, and has more energy than most from this early era. Sure, if you look at the whole Neo Geo library it sounds average, but compared to most of the 1990 and 1991 SNK releases it's practically godly.
@@BasementBrothers I’ll have to give that one shot at some point. I’ve only played it a couple of times but I never have been a football fan so it didn’t grab a hold me like the baseball games or even a dunk dreams.
reminds me of the 2 screen arcade tecmo super bowl, always liked that as a kid and played it at the roller rink even though i never really liked football. thanks for the video, looks like fun to play through once but I'll just play a game of high impact instead. touchdownnnnnn!
This is better than John Madden football games all the way until it went 3D. Madden didn't get good until then, if SNK had gotten a license from the NFL things could've been different using real teams and players.
I'm not American so I prefer simplified versions of sports games that otherwise would bore me. That's why I like this game and Blitz the League for the Ps2.
MVS = NEO*GEO games in the arcade. He mentioned the arcade release when he mentioned the MVS. In fact, the copy of the game he owns IS for the MVS/arcade.
I ranked this game 137th out of 144 Neo Geo games. I really do not like it, lol. A shame as I'm a fan of other arcade American football games like Tecmo Bowl and Cyberball.
Other than baseball, the sports games are really bad. I've tried to get into them multiple times thinking I'm being too harsh, but no. They're just not good.
@@That_Lady_Charlie Did you know Riding Hero MVS cartridge has a phono jack for link play? Just found this out recently. Too bad it isn't a very good racing game. The road is too narrow and too tame/slow, as the NEO GEO doesn't do raster effects like the Genesis/Mega Drive and most other consoles.

It is surprising they didn't have a tennis game, although Windjammers is a great substitute.

I come to Basement Bros because of content like Neo-Alec singing the extra point song.

If there really was team called the Hitmen you know fans would fire their guns in the air whenever they score, lol
Legit wild that there's only one football game on the platform. There are at least three baseball games and I'm not even sure how many soccer ones!
Only Americans care for American Football / Handegg, while every other sport have a more worldwide appeal, especially Soccer / Real Football.
@@MagmaMKII Yes, and America was a major market for SNK in the '90s.
Kinda makes sense. American Football really has nearly zero foothold in the rest of the world, whereas baseball is very popular in Japan and soccer is extremely popular as a global sport.
Football Frenzy was not a popular game anywhere, iirc. So SNK decided against a sequel.
This got me chuckling
Hahaha, great editing per usual. I have a Neo Geo CD, and what games I can't buy I run backups! This looks super fun🤘
The little reaction shots that are inset in this make the characters look like swollen Boschean horrors
I was Just Pearly Things until I saw this thumbnail. I clicked on it so fast my phone couldn't keep up.😂
Tecmo Bowl on NES is, to this day, the sole sports game I've ever enjoyed.
Have you tried NFL Blitz?
Cheerleaders shaking their butts before a game. Now that's a nice treat.
Thanks!
It's back!
Tecmo Superbowl had the time names and players.
Tecmo Bowl had the players. LJN's NFL had the names.
Yes, sir! It's on the Neo Geo mini!!!
Gosh I hope there's a Simpsons reference for every Neo Geo game.
I'd be surprised if there wasn't.
I can't believe Billy Kane married The Gandhara. I thought for sure he and Red Dragon were meant to be.
I love that extra point song lol. Great review on a very average game!

well... that was a game, gr8 presentation and info, going to avoid this one..., looking FW to Mystic Wand 🧙👍
The music in this game sounds like your typical neo-Geo game… not that that’s a bad thing it’s actually quite good.
