The problem ive had with not just the knights templar, but history in general, is that the Victor always writes the history. As the knights Templar grew in power, they began to be a potential threat against the powers that be. When the king of France and the pope saw that all they had to do was make some accusations that they could not only be free of their debts to the knights templar, but they could actually have the wealth that the knights Templar had accumulated.
It really wasn't uncommon to accuse your enemies of being in League with the devil or whatever the entity of the day was. It was a good way to get the people on your side and have them turn against your enemy, before your enemy really knows what the hell is going on.

It seems to me like the church was threatened by the templars and slandered them into being destroyed. If you study the esoteric meaning behind Baphomet you'd know that the Templars were doing holy work. They were seeking to bring peace between the violent warrior and the gentle priest; the balance between the seemingly opposite forces of light and dark within themselves. This is the highest work reserved for the strongest and most holiest of men, for delving too deep into the darkness of one's soul without the unbreakable faith in God required to combat it will lead to madness and destruction. The Knights Templar were doing the Holy Great Work, that which is reserved for the mightiest of God's warriors.

Hence why there are 12 months because there are 12 constellations the sun passes through in its yearly cycle (though technically its 13). The meaning of the zodiac predates astrology... it was only much later that people used which constellation the sun was in to predict things about people's lives.
