  • A gathering of Dakota / sky trains from all over the world for the anniversary of D day sadly the wind speed was to high for the parachute drop using round shots. But it was still a rare sight to so many Dakotas in the same place at the same time

    These planes are not only beautiful and historic , they are useful and reliable . Probably the most useful and consistently profitable airplane of all time, they have proven their utility value and ruggedness for many decades. And will continue to do so, they are a most fitting tribute to the generation that gave us these airplanes. Those people saved the World!

    Imagine the skies over England as over 14,000 sorties flew on June 6th, 1944 as they headed to Normandy.
    Astonishing

    Brilliant job from the “Daks” team and IWM Duxford. The commentary, kept us well informed throughout the day. Very moving day for my sister and I as we began to understand how it must have been for our late father Lew Dodgson as he left for France from Broadwell very late on the 5th June ‘44. He reached his drop zone at 01.10 hrs, paras jumped and then he returned to Gloucestershire. An early liberator of France. After a bit of R and R he returned in the evening with more troops in a Horsa glider.

    at the 2:00 mark, cockpit number identification letters CD, tail number 348608 is "Betsy's Biscuit Bomber", a C-47B built in 1943. It was flown from Paso Robles California making whistle stops along the way over a months time. It flew to Duxford England, coming by way of the Greenland route. The aircraft is part of the Estrella Warbirds Museum collection here in Paso Robles California. This aircraft's last U.S. missions were flying the Berlin airlift, it was sold to Israel and was later purchased back from the Israeli Air Force and refurbished, there is an Israeli language sign painted on the interior that roughly says, "The only replacement for a Dakota, is another Dakota". The plane was a military transport it's whole life and was never converted for civilian use and has all of it's original equipment to include the equipment it had in 1943 for towing gliders.

    Me dad fought in the Eastern theater but we had uncles who landed on the beaches. This makes me proud. Britain, from your shores came the troops who took the awful regime of the Nazi nation down. I noticed it is the Americans who seem to get most of the credit. I don't believe the Tommy soldier has gotten his full credit. By the way, I am an American.

      No doubt it was a concerted effort by all...but do/did you notice were a lot of the equipment the British were using came from. If it wasn’t for the USA’s capability to gen up a massive military industrial war production...the British and commonwealths would still have had only what they came back from Dunkirk with....only the soldiers. Nearly everything they had was left on the beaches of France. Yes, the Battle of Britain (RAF) kept Germany from invading, but in all aspects of equipment in the British army...there was none. So yes, the USA should get a huge amount of credit.

    Just for interest, the lead C47 'That's All Brother' was the lead aircraft in the airborne D-Day invasion fleet. There was a great doco on the search for and refurbishment of the aircraft on Foxtel. Aircraft now maintained by the Confederate Air Force.

    Up until about 10 years ago, there was a DC-3 or C-47 that made daily runs to and from a local airport Gere in So Cal. I would sometimes see it flying westward in the morning and then flying east at or after sunset. I don't know if it was being used as a commuter service or if some rich person was personally flying it to work, but it was a regular thing for a few years. Then no more one day. It was nice to hear it overhead.

    When you work on older aircraft as a daily job, you think it it will never end, but it does. I worked on some of the last pistoned engined aircraft in the US Navy, or in any service for that matter, in the forms of the EC-121, T-28, S-2, and C-1 aircraft. All gone now, either in museum collections, or scrapped, but the memories remain. The C-47/DC-3 has outlived most of the people that built, flew, or worked on them. I also watched the last of the C-117/Super DC-3 aircraft leave the service.

    • @stephenhunter70
      @stephenhunter70 5 років тому +1

      @@fabulousprofound Buffalo owns one DC-3 that was built as a DC-3 and not a C-47. Apparently the DC-3 passenger version had the door on the starboard side. It could be that the Russians copied a DC-3 instead of a C-47 version.

    • @MortenM80
      @MortenM80 5 років тому +1

      They shut it down due to a technical issue. It's actually an engine witch is just fitted. The previous engine had a cylinder crack and separate from the engine, grounding it in august. That engine only had about 65 hours on it. So the last year have been full of bad luck for this Dak,, LN-WND Little Egypt from Norway

    An 18 year old soldier storming the Normandy beaches would be 93 years old today. There aren't many left anymore. Soon there won't be any WW2 veterans left. Very soon there will be more C-47's then paratroopers who jumped from them.

    I know it won't be popular....But.....May I hazard a suggestion that the C-47 played an even BIGGER role in the Vietnam War than in WWII...as an AC-47 , EC-47 and RC-47. I know that's shocking....... but after flying them there...that's what I believe.
