6:34 The battles on the isonzo river were actually a succes for italy; austrians were about to loose trieste, the only port of the empire and the its loss was possibly the event that would have ended war for austrians, so they called german's help and destroyed italian's army at caporetto, wich is also the name of the battle. It is not because of the mountains that they were defeated, but it was because italian army was weak compared to german army. Would never say humble but warm yes. Italians never let you forget their cultural and historical legacy, in terms of soft power Italy is still a juggernaut. And that will never change.
I had an Italian boss from originally Chirie near Torino, he had a map of Italy in his office, he had a horizontal line at Rome and under that line was written with a sharpie "AFRICA"
Well in Medieval and Rome Total War, Rome is literally the center of the map. So if you have a world-spanning empire. You should set your capital there to promote public order.
Irrelevancy? Don't think so, by this logic Germany, Russia and Austria should have been irrelevant too. Italy highly influenced the world even during colonial times through its culture, and became one of the major economies and powers once unified. Not to mention its great maritime republics. Plus, as history showed, having colonies but not being able to sustain and manage them can lead you to many economic, political and logistical problems as happened to Spain, Portugal and France. Infact the most successful colonizers were the Brits and to a certain extent the Dutch, given their little size. Not to mention that nowadays the main colonial powers of the past are literally being colonized back by immigrants from the former countries they invaded. It's true tho that a late unification and the inaccessibility to the Atlantic crippled the enormous Italy's potential to be a global superpower like in the Roman times 🤷, this tho doesn't mean that Italy could automatically have become and remained a global power just because of colonies since in order to impose yourself on the world stage you still had to be strong in Europe. Only exception to this, again, are the Brits who despite having never had a major direct foothold on mainland Europe still managed through their economy, navy and diplomacy to remain relevant on the stage. Despite all of this, Italy remained the richest area of Europe at least untill the 16th- mid 17th century. Plus, the historical, economical and cultural contribution that constantly came from Italy since the ancient to modern times (unlike Greece who unfortunately stopped with the Byzantines) will always put Italy into a place of relevance

As an Italian, I think Italy's Geography will start to be relevant again when African countries will see a massive development in their economies (as in the case of Nigeria). Just in this case, the Mediterranean see will start to be the center of commercial exchanges between Africa and Europe and Italy will be the first touchpoint of this interconnection.
interesting way to think about it. If Africa was to be able to garner more capital and banking services in general, maybe utilizing mico loans or cryptocurrency, I could very well see this happening.
@user-wj8kv2rv4u for the western half of the continent, sure But for the eastern half, including Egypt, the Horn of Africa and the Indian Ocean? A lot of that will go through the Suez Canal, and Italy has important ports for that network, like Venice
Hold on. The "Byzantines" "invaded Italy"? More like the Eastern Romans (i.e. Byzantines) wanted to retake their first capital of Rome and their lands from the Goths. Besides, many part of Italy were Greek colonies since time immemorial.
Yes but actually no. Greco-Gothic wars were disastrous for the people in Italy. They lasted for 20 years and plummeted the population down to 2-3 million people (before Roman levels). Goths and Byzantines in the attempt to control or retake cities they had lost, buned them down and forced the population to migrate to the coutryside basically starting Feudalism in the peninsula. At the end of that war Italy was devastated and you could say that the "Dark Ages" started at that point (at least here)
Giulio Patruno Yeah the Gothic War completely stomped Italy, only parts of the south were spared and the dark ages began for Italia. Justinian should have stoped at Carthage or Sicily.
@@Iapetus7849 wow, Greco-Gothic war/!? Who are you to name the Roman reconquest of Italy like that!? Firstly, Justinian was not even Greek (even if he was Greek, it won't change the things). Respect to this beautiful country from France. :)
The Italian peninsula is still quite important as a strategic position. As right now the Italian navy is the most powerful navy in the Mediterranean sea, it has the possibility to cut off Russian access to the Mediterranean sea and Atlantic Ocean (Russian ships have to pass through the Mediterranean sea to get to the Atlantic sea), and Crimea holds the most important naval base of Russia, therefore Italy has the possibility to "imprison" the Russian navy in the Black sea. Just to give you a scale, during ww1 winning a battle could have meant to go forward for 1 km, while the 11th battle on the isonzo river brought italian soldiers 10 km forwards.
Germany have used innovative tecniche to made the war they bomb italian front for an our instead a day and when Italian create bunker, the german forces attack and made a lot of prigioner.

Well in Medieval and Rome Total War, Rome is literally the center of the map. So if you have a world-spanning empire. You should set your capital there to promote public order.
The ironic part was that it was italians who led the exploration of the atlantic, effectively dooming their nation to irrelevancy
Fun fact: Cristóvão Colombo learn to navigate in Portugal.
@@pedrosabino8751 fun fact he is a Genovese one of the Naval superpower Republic

Keep dreaming boi

@user-wj8kv2rv4u for the western half of the continent, sure

Meh, I can bet the Chinese are going to buy everything and shit on it as soon as it gets economically less useful
Ah yes covid
The Italian peninsula is still quite important as a strategic position. As right now the Italian navy is the most powerful navy in the Mediterranean sea, it has the possibility to cut off Russian access to the Mediterranean sea and Atlantic Ocean (Russian ships have to pass through the Mediterranean sea to get to the Atlantic sea), and Crimea holds the most important naval base of Russia, therefore Italy has the possibility to "imprison" the Russian navy in the Black sea.
And Italy can also be a "huge airbase" to control the Mediterranean sea, just like the UK was for the English channel during ww2.
