First JR I enjoy your videos and enthusiasm for all you do with the cars you buy. I used to do this too when I was your age (54 now). I'm just into restoring my 60s cars now and keeping them all stock, but I get the rush one gets from modding cars, making them faster Etc. In the 80's I had a hot rodded 73 Delta 88! JUST to be different LOL You gave this otherwise "tired" Rolls a new lease on life, so BRAVO for that! On the rear end failure ...... had you kept the rear stock I think you would have had gotten some use out of it. The issue why everything snapped and fell apart is because you simply cannot weld up an open DIFF to make it posi. Posi rears only send power to both rear wheels when going straight. On turns the outer wheel has to cover more distance so it needs to turn FASTER then the inboard wheel. If the whole rear axle is essentially ONE PIECE as it was once you welded it, then on turns everything is fighting itself as one axle wants to go one speed, the other a different speed and the drive shaft is trying to accomplish this without any binding on the center diff or axles. Once binding occurs as you now know, things get nasty and BREAK! But lesson learned! Under extreme driving the stock rear more then likely would have failed eventually, just not on the first 1-2 burn outs. I think the only reason you were able to drive a few blocks and turn without much issues is because the ground was snowy and damp which reduced the friction between the tires and ground, enabled the tires to slip (or drag) on turns and thus less stress on the rear end components. But once you hit it hard and some traction was obtained things self destructed as I thought they would! Anyway, I can't wait to see this Rolls once its all finely tuned with a new rear in it! BEST OF :LUCK - Jake from N.Y. C
it seemed to me like it was struggling to do a burnout, an ls6 should have no issues turning those tires. that makes me feel like the rear breaks are holding really well which would put a lot of force on the driveshaft and rear end, and would explain why the drive shaft broke. didn't you say you were going to put a proportioning valve on the car to lower the rear break pressure? If you get a new drive shaft and find a way (even a questionable way for the contest) to disable the rear breaks before the contest she'll be just fine. Lets go Rolls Smoke!!!!
When I was in high school, a very long time ago, my buddy had a drive train in his 55 Chevy out of an old Firebird (327 with a Muncie 4 speed)...anyway doing a clutch dump from about 5K on the tack...he spiral broke his drive shaft like a barber pole...I’ve never scene that again...it was a twist break all the way along the shaft.
