Great job on this video, really. Very informative, fast-paced, not repetitive, great command of language... Other youtubers should learn from you seriously.
I've been playing goal for 20 years and just started spreading my wings as a forward. This is by far the best explanation I've seen for evaluating a skate to fit my needs. Great video- thank you!
Love the 1xLE skate. There was 0 break-in time for me. I experienced absolutely no pain when I first started skating in them. Only thing I didn't like was the LS4 steel because I wasn't used to it. But now it's fine.
My favorite feature has to be the 37.5 like you said, I first thought it would be a gimmick. It doesn't feel any different to me from other liners, but when I take them off at the end of the day, it's like I never even skated in them. Very minimal moisture and very impressive.
This is just me but, I always go for the previous models high ends. I've had some mid to low range inline and ice skates just break at the chassis or the holder from stopping too often and just don't like the lack of stiffness and padding when it comes to taking pucks to them. A word of advice to newer guys and gals. You may not need the top of the line stuff but, you can usually find a high end model used and in decent shape for the same price as a used mid to low. Shop around.
Maybe it would be good to compare a mid range skate along with the lower and upper price range. I don't know many people looking for the cheapest skate, I lot of people would spend for mid price. Doing a mid price skate vid would be a good, and more useful to most players
This may have been said already but I'd rather you compare the midline from the top of the line (e.g. why should I spend $600-$700 versus $300-$400?). Most guys aren't comparing the $100 pair versus the $1000 pair. Thanks for the detailed review tho.
Very helpful -- was wondering exactly this as I'm looking to upgrade. Wasn't sure how much of it was just marketing or cosmetics, but your vid dispelled that notion. Thanks for this!
Having recently gone from Bauer s160 to Bauer customs, I think this video is excellent and full of useful information. The difference between the two skates is dramatic.
Thank you! Started hockey very late! in my 20's but I've been skating since I was a teenager. It's never to late to learn and any skating that teaches you the basics of edge control is worth doing.
Hockey Tutorial I starters skating a few months ago. I need to finish Beginner 2 before enrolling in hockey skill skating. Will it be better to finish beginner 2 with hockey skates or figure skates? (I'm pretty good at skating but I just want your opinion on which would help more) thanks!
Another thing to keep in mind for high-end skates is how different skate brands fit different types of feet. For a long time, Bauer has been notorious for building very narrow skates. This isn't as big a problem with the lower end skates that have more body flex, but it can be crippling on the stiffer higher end skates. I have unusual bone protrusions in my ankles, and the top-end (this was a few years ago) Bauer skate was absolutely merciless - even after baking and wearing ankle pads. I switched to a top-end Graf - which are also very stiff and light - and never had any more problems.
Great tutorial for a guy who has fallen behind. Im still wearing my CCM Super Tacks that I purchased in 1979. Im off to the store today. At least now i know what to look for. Thanks.
Still a ripoff regardless of how much you like them. Those skates cost maybe $30 to manufacture, which means a reasonable selling price would be, say, $75 to $100.
SurfingBullDog the skate itself probably costs way less than what the price on the shelf is, but that doesn’t mean the company is making x amount of money off of you. People forget that it costs money to run a factory for production and advertisement and shelf space.. It’s not just about the price of the materials, but everything that leads up to the production of the product.
What is suggested here by "incredibly built and incredibly heavy"? I have the X200 Vapor skates and I'm 6'3" 250lbs. The skates are not flexing at the holder and certainly not in danger of "collapsing" after a few strides (plenty of strides taken in them). They feel quite secure and solid underfoot. For recreational skating I would say they are fine. Not stiff enough at the upper for aggressive play, but if you're that good, you already know this through experience. Bear in mind the above comparison is between a $CDN 1000+ skate and a $CDN 75 skate, (13x difference in price).
I just started coaching very beginner kids in the inner-city (chicago), I can say for one accessibility is an issue. To be able to skate you need to pay for skates (or rent), plus ring time. The other issue is exposure.. most people just aren't aware of hockey/figure skating or have friends who do it. My kids are loving it so far!
I'm still rocking a pair of bauer impacts from 2002...the year my foot stopped growing. Blade is keeping rust now more than losing it. Ordered a pair of reebok pumps from Ebay from a dude who only wore them.3 times due to him having a wide foot.....75 bucks lol. Great channel dude 😎🤙🏒
I'm being taught how to skate by my brother in law (who plays in an amateur ice hockey team) with the goal of joining the team myself. Before yesterday I had only use the rinks own rentable skates, I bought a pair of x200's and found that they were extremely comfortable and skating was made quite a bit easier, if these are the lowest skate quality then I'm sure I'll be amazed at the high end stuff!
Very informative. Being an old-school player, I can honestly say I never realized just how far hockey had developed since the 80's. Heck, after listening to this guy, I almost confused our lot for a smaht bunch of athletes! So why the dislikes?
I always wondered how skates can range from $70 to $700. Like really... 10 times the price? Im sorry but they cant be 10 times as good. Like every thing nowadays they just make the top of the line product stupid expensive and then kids automatically must have it. Its all business, not performance. I get that a $70 skate isnt that good, but a $300 skate should be plenty good.
David i have no experience with hockey skates, but i recently (stupidly) bought 30$ figure skates off ebay and my skating ability was greatly affected. even with rental skates i could skate much better and i'm obviously not going to buy expensive ones, but i'm getting mid-priced ones to use until i get into freestyle probably
David the markup is outrageous. I agree. But things even as simple as the rivets get upgraded as you go. There's a significant difference. But going to the very top from a couple models down isn't too drastic over all.
actually, a 70 dollar skate is great if you don't have a lot of money. Not everyone can buy 300 dollar skates. i use 70 dollar skates and they are perfect. I picked them over $160 skates.
wampa yumyumz I just saved up some money for about 9 months and I'm planning on getting Bauer Vapor x900 skates at the beginning of June I can't wait :)
broke my fibula a few years ago requiring metal rod and screws, which were removed 4 years ago, but the area around my fibula is still pretty sensitive. I recently got into skating and currently have cheap skates. The area on ankle where metal screws were removed is in a lot of pain...have tried gel pads, but not completely solving problem. Will expensive skates help reduce the type of outer-ankle fibula pain I am having? Thank you!
zwinns when you get to a higher level of hockey, skates and shin pads will matter much more then they matter to you more. If you have ever taken a slap shot to a 50$ shin pad it hurts a lot, but a high end shin pad will not break, and it will leave you with no pain
zwinns shoulder pads make sure you don't injure a shoulder when taking or giving a hit, and helmet keeps your brain safe, so you don't get a concussion
I used to use top of the line skates (the old vapor 60's, supreme total one, supreme 190, rbk ribcores, vapor 1X). My ankles are very swollen from all the skating I've done over the years, so now I prefer more of a mid range skate because the padding is a little more substantial. Now I'm rocking a supreme 160's and my feet are much happier. I find that because less material is used in higher end skates, there is less padding, and i blow through them almost instantly.
Very informative and well made video. You are also extremely well spoken! Shame I can't afford high-end skates, though. That Lacebite protection would be a god send!
Ville Aho look for year end clearance sales online! Hockey tutorial has a good video regarding lace bite prevention. Things you can wear under the skate.
One of the best way to prevent lace bite is the keep the laces flat. Besides, you should not tightening laces tight that high - even a low end skate is so stiff it doe not need to be that tight.
I bought ccm 9040 tacks online the size it self is fine but there so uncomfortable and tight I couldn’t skate longer than 5 minutes had to take them off
Wow it's amazing how much skates have evolved over the years since I played. As a dad raising kids learning to skate and getting into hockey with the proper equipment, it all starts with skating so I would invest more in a proper pair of skates without blowing up the budget since their feet grow so fast. Also, I'm curious what you think of CCM vs Bauer.
Except like GTR vs Micra you don't travel twice as fast or cut corners double the speed. At the end the actual performance in ice hockey is not that far away from each other. There is a difference but just not as massive one.
This makes me feel like I'm weird that I am already contented enough with the cheap skates the arena provide for the public skaters. I guess that's where cheapskate got its name from.
Excellent explanation on skates, I played junior ‘A’ hockey back in the very early 70’s, started league hockey at 5 years of age. At age 25 I hung them up for good, now that I’m retired I thought I might start with recreational skating again. My problem even back when playing at a high level was foot pain, my feet are 4E wide, they just didn’t make skates that wide. Hope they do now? Bauer made the widest back then, but still not Ideal. I weighed 205 lbs back in 72, add 5 lbs now, a bit diff proportions though. 😂
Oh boy 6 years ago, where the time gone. I have those 1xLE's in my closet. went custom a few years ago when they first started. Now waiting on the ft6 customs to come out.
Great video! Don’t cheap out on skates, stick, helmet, and gloves. My BAUER Vapor x40s still last me till this day. At the time they were the 3rd best skate around $400. I can only imagine how good the x60s would be. Gonna upgrade to the 1s pretty soon though.
Talking about how soft the uppers were, I remember the first pair of Bauer hockey skates I bought, you could practically fold the tops of the boot over as if it were a figure skate.
The copper rivets at the heel of the blade holder are an important difference. Can't tell you the number of cheap skates I've seen the blade holder peel away from the boot because they only have basic rivets, and once the heel rivet pops out they all do. If you're going to buy cheap skates, at least go one level up and get the copper rivets, because you don't have to go top of the line to get them.
Personally, I had no problem with cheaper skates even playing at a fairly higher level as a teenager. Stiff or loose materials didn't matter because when I laced them up, I laced them tight. But I never thought it was reasonable to spend more then 100-250 for a skate so I never did. So maybe I just need to try both out. But it had no affect as far as I'm aware, didn't hinder me.
The best pair of skates I’ve ever owned was a pair of Mission (can’t remember what exact one) that cost $150. I felt like I could do whatever I wanted in them. I had them for 12 years up until just a few years ago when they broke. Since then I’ve tried $400 Bauers, $900 Bauers and $250 Bauers and I haven’t liked any of them. I hate how companies have started to make skates rock hard and stiff as a rod. Feels like I’m dragging around blocks on my feet. Why they did this is beyond me. Skates need a little bit of flexibility.
@@HT-sm9dm I went thru the same thing. I feel for the advertising and went for a really stiff cool looking more expensive skate than my trusty flexible Bauer 2000s. I could not do anything in those shiny stiff skates. Could not turn, could not stop. I put them on ebay and now I buy cheap, flexible skates. Yep, felt like I was dragging a boat anchor or something in stiff skates.
My bauer x:15 skates are still the nicest boot I've ever had lol. My ccm u+ 12 skates weren't as nice of a boot when I upgraded go them so I went back to using the skates I've used since starting to play in 8th grade like 7 years ago.
I recognize I'm a few years behind on this video, but I'd love to see a comparison from the perspective of performance and feel. I definitely understand that a $1,000 skate has better materials and features than a $350 skate, which is what I have. But as someone whose never put on a pair of $1,000 skates, how would upgrading help my game? I realize top of the line gear doesn't make a better player, but I consider myself to be a decent skater, and I'm fast, and wonder if getting higher end skates would help my speed and dekes a little bit more.
Hey buddy - love your videos. I’m considering the Hyperlite with the carbon blade. Can you put out some videos on this? Not much out there on it. Thanks a ton!
Personally, the way I pick skates, is I pick narrow it down to 5 pairs of skates or so and blindly try them on, and whichever feels best is the one I get. I prefer the ccm tacks.
They've come along way from the ones I have, pouring boiling water in the boot and wearing them overnight to form to your foot. Inserts, hell I never thought of having inserts in my skates, Brillant!
I have a pair of skates i bought them for 45 euro and i can t even brake with them! Is it me or are the skates cuz with the normal ice skates i can brake and with mine don t ! What do you day?
My challenge is a 12.5A dress shoe, just a recreational skater, weigh 215. Struggle with Movement in heal. Read that "low volume" would be best fit. Any thoughts? Thanks, Ken, White Plains, NY
+UltimateBreloom Somewhat depends on your foot shape, but COMPLETELY depends on what feels comfortable. It is the most important thing. Price, be it cheap or expensive, should not matter here. I got mid-level skates because I knew I could wear those for hours each day.
what if I just want a pair of hockey skates just to skate in for fun? What time of Bauer skates would I go for? My friend he's a hockey player and sometimes I would like to play around with him, shooting some shots. Though again remember I'm not in a hockey sport just want to do it for fun.
Dude i had the quest 8s, quest 5s and quest 2s. But by far the best were my black and white max zoom airs. Nike had some nice shit before they merged with bauer. I still have my quest 8 gloves in my hockey bag
Excellent video. I think one other thing he could have dived deeper into is heat moldability. Not possible in the cheaper skates, and makes a big difference the higher up you go in the range.
I knew I was right. Hockey was being played in the UK in the 1790’s...Canada played the first competitive game indoors. Much like China inventing football( soccer for you guys across the pond) but England having the first competitive games first clubs and first international game.
@@HockeyTutorialOfficial You are a novice who just recently got into this sport. Fine. But you have no business giving advice to anyone. You're a beginner giving advice to beginners. 🤣🤣
Great video, clear ! Thanks a lot, your yt channel is very helpful ! But I was wondering : I want to buy hockey skates, I'm a beginner (I know the basics), I practice once a week, but I am heavy (120 kg/264 lb) so what should I choose to buy ? (sorry if there are mistakes, english isn't my native language)
So in big. Most important things are: Comfortpad on neck and The rounded footbed.. Think i need to pay more than 150dollars for these features? anyways i will check it out and get back on prices! Thanks for good work. I really needed this info alot!
Good review and advice. Buy for your needs. Unless you're playing Pro, SemiPro or high level Junior or College you dont need premium. I used to play college hockey and since then turned into a beer leaguer thus I no longer wear premiums. Upper mid level skates do just fine for my needs and only cost a few hundred instead of almost a thousand.
I'm having trouble getting comfortable and controlling my new skates. I came from Bauer vapor x3.0 then Reebok ribcor pump. I wanted to go to a higher tier of skates and since I'm flat footed, I bought a pair of Nexus 7000. The moment I slipped them on, it felt weird. I skated with them and it hurts like hell, it's like stepping on those round stones. It's also not as easy to control as my last skates, it was harder to do a hockey stop and crossover. Do I just need to get used to it or should I just sell them and buy a new pair?
I know there were material differences but crickey when you break it down there are so many differences I didn't know about Edit: also love your analogy at the end there 👌
I loved your video. Only one question, the riveting looks completely different as well. As a heavy player, I have personally experienced rivet failure with low end skates. The rivets appear to also be different qualities. Do you think that little copper around the rear rivets and the rivet differences in general make a difference?
This is a very late answer, but as someone who rivets aircraft parts, yes, I’d say rivets matter quite a lot. Weaker metals/hollow rivets, lower quality metals, soft metals not meant for whatever load they’re bearing, etc. will all make a difference. But for each specific model of skate, I’d have to look at it to tell you if it’s a bad design or not.
Is it easier to learn skating using hockey skates or figure skates? I skate for few times with figure skates and i want to switch to hockey skates. Am i going a hard time adjusting?
i went for bauer supreme 170 to the 190. ($350 dollars to $700 dollars) and the difference between them is ridiculously noticeable. It's indescribable.
Basically if you have the money purchase the better skate if not purchase a mid range skate. I've had mid range jetspeeds and the lowest end jetspeeds. The low end jetspeeds were so cheap that the outside of the boot slowly started falling apart there's holes because of waring them. They also feel like the only stiffness is from cardboard. I would spend at least $100 for skates! Anything less is most likely very very cheap grade.
Just subscribed to the channel appreciate all the information, anyway could you do a short video on teaching a 4 year old to skate backwards hes going around a rink normally in under 30 seconds hes basically just walking backwards on the ice or wiggling his but or swizzling backwards. Anything else you recommend?!
The only problem for me is the price. I've tried the low end models several times and I've found that they don't suit me at all. I just don't have the kind of money for any top of the line models. What would be a great mid price point skate?

One of the best way to prevent lace bite is the keep the laces flat. Besides, you should not tightening laces tight that high - even a low end skate is so stiff it doe not need to be that tight.
I bought ccm 9040 tacks online the size it self is fine but there so uncomfortable and tight I couldn’t skate longer than 5 minutes had to take them off
Just picked up some FT4’s. First pair of expensive skates I’ve ever bought and it’s a huge difference.
I'm getting hockey skates for Christmas this year and it's very soon. Can't wait to try them on.
Donny Dougherty / ToonTown Stan How are the new skates?
Jhacker111 I tried them on. Can't wait to hop on the ice.
Donny Dougherty / ToonTown Stan me too! Finally getting on the ice tomorrow
FANTASTIC. Very thorough and very comprehensive. SUbbed.!
This makes me feel like I'm weird that I am already contented enough with the cheap skates the arena provide for the public skaters. I guess that's where cheapskate got its name from.
Thank you for the video.
Wish ice skate boot is the best to locked the back of the foot . When skating. Looking for the best option
It's not the skates that makes the player. It's the player who's the one doing the work.
i always wondered about this .. thank you!!!
iv never heard of a skate collapsing because of the stress you put on a skate
Talking about how soft the uppers were, I remember the first pair of Bauer hockey skates I bought, you could practically fold the tops of the boot over as if it were a figure skate.
The copper rivets at the heel of the blade holder are an important difference. Can't tell you the number of cheap skates I've seen the blade holder peel away from the boot because they only have basic rivets, and once the heel rivet pops out they all do. If you're going to buy cheap skates, at least go one level up and get the copper rivets, because you don't have to go top of the line to get them.
Excellent review and made me rethink on buying the cheaper skates. Thank you very much.
But great video though
@@HT-sm9dm I went thru the same thing. I feel for the advertising and went for a really stiff cool looking more expensive skate than my trusty flexible Bauer 2000s. I could not do anything in those shiny stiff skates. Could not turn, could not stop. I put them on ebay and now I buy cheap, flexible skates. Yep, felt like I was dragging a boat anchor or something in stiff skates.
Man, that's the best presenter ever!
all the bauer LE trim equipment looks so sick
Always get good information from your videos. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thanks for watching Shawn
Some of the best players I know use 50 dollar skates so I don't think expensive is worth it, it's all just skill
The hockey clips of this video were filmed at my local rink
Awesome ;) We are everywhere :p
Great video learned alot.👍👍👍👍
Very informative video. Thanks!
Really glad we could help. Thank you for watching.
Hey buddy - love your videos. I’m considering the Hyperlite with the carbon blade. Can you put out some videos on this? Not much out there on it. Thanks a ton!
I have decent CCM 80 series from a few years ago. I wrap sock tape around the top of the ankle area and they are good to go.
Personally, the way I pick skates, is I pick narrow it down to 5 pairs of skates or so and blindly try them on, and whichever feels best is the one I get. I prefer the ccm tacks.
I have the Bauer 140 skate and they are PERFECT.
Why are you asking a guy who just started recently, is a total beginner, with limited knowledge and experience?
Great video! I send your videos to members of or club and new families in the Learn To Play program.
Thank you
Learned a lot about a topic I don't know much about.
This really helped me, THANK U SO MUCH💞
My challenge is a 12.5A dress shoe, just a recreational skater, weigh 215. Struggle with Movement in heal. Read that "low volume" would be best fit. Any thoughts? Thanks, Ken, White Plains, NY
I'm 6'3", and about 150 lbs. What kind of skate should I get?
Nexus/ supreme
That helps not at all. Nexus and supreme are the lines, but don't have to do with the stiffness. That's where my confusion is.
+UltimateBreloom Somewhat depends on your foot shape, but COMPLETELY depends on what feels comfortable. It is the most important thing. Price, be it cheap or expensive, should not matter here. I got mid-level skates because I knew I could wear those for hours each day.
Miss Korea 1997 I just really don't know for the stiffness, I got a decent idea for shape and size.
+UltimateBreloom I'm 150 and intermediate stiffness is fine for me
what if I just want a pair of hockey skates just to skate in for fun? What time of Bauer skates would I go for? My friend he's a hockey player and sometimes I would like to play around with him, shooting some shots. Though again remember I'm not in a hockey sport just want to do it for fun.
Still have my Nike Zoom Air skates. Too bad can't get those anymore. Absolutely fantastic skates.
I recently joined a mens league and bought some used skates. They were Nike Zooms. I got them for around 60 dollars.
Excellent presentation, very educational especially for an older player like me, thank you, Ciao, L
Pretty sure I got my information on my next electric skateboard from you too
lol!! You did ! 🤣 shh I have two channels
@@HockeyTutorialOfficial You are a novice who just recently got into this sport. Fine. But you have no business giving advice to anyone. You're a beginner giving advice to beginners. 🤣🤣
good analogies. thank you for thoroughly explaining that. I know what my next pair of skates need to be now. :)
I just bought the expensive ones yesterday and I’m liking them even more
This is a really great informative video! Thank you Hockey Tutorial!
Very good info, very well presented. A+
Good review and advice.
I know there were material differences but crickey when you break it down there are so many differences I didn't know about
Edit: also love your analogy at the end there 👌
I loved your video.
Bball Hype not really
You should do a comparison on ice, try do some drill with both and see how much of a difference there is
i went for bauer supreme 170 to the 190. ($350 dollars to $700 dollars) and the difference between them is ridiculously noticeable. It's indescribable.
bjshalli I'm using $50 skates :/
bjshalli I'm gonna upgrade to $550 skates hopefully my stride gets better
Key Lenny too much human error
I have Graf t-blade 103 v1 and I love them!
As i was watching this video, i was comparing my Bauer Nexus 600s to the Vapor 1Xs and i believe my skates are a mid grade skate and i love them.
Just subscribed to the channel appreciate all the information, anyway could you do a short video on teaching a 4 year old to skate backwards hes going around a rink normally in under 30 seconds hes basically just walking backwards on the ice or wiggling his but or swizzling backwards. Anything else you recommend?!
i still use vapor xx and one90. still going strong, even after working 40 hrs+ at a rink and hockey in between
The only problem for me is the price. I've tried the low end models several times and I've found that they don't suit me at all. I just don't have the kind of money for any top of the line models. What would be a great mid price point skate?
Mr.Hicks Is G.O.D Bauer vapor x700
