I’ve worked security at a lot of places and trust me. It’s nerve-racking when you hear something and nobody’s supposed to be inside the building but you
@ o yeah one time this construction company was tearing down an old mental hospital and I got to watch the job site at night to make sure no homeless went inside that was the scariest shit for like three days
Pretty good example of how people are wrong when they say they're afraid of being alone in the dark. They're actually just afraid that they might not be alone.
@@sandiegobrewreviewfun times, worked security at a old hospital getting redone and had to make sure homeless people or people wasn’t stealing materials and my god that place was worst than a horror movie.only saving grace was people coming knocking on the door thinking it still was a active hospital

I think the caretaker avoids trouble because he only visits for an hour or two at a time. The group didn't experience anything until they had been there for four or five hours straight. The idea that a haunted place doesn't reveal itself quickly is interesting, as if it takes time for the spirits to realize people are there.
Happy to see people finally reacting to Grave Encounters. I saw this movie back when I was in High School. The death of the doctor being overshadowed by the dead of Babe Ruth was such a nice touch.
The full text, which acts as *great* foreshadowing, is "Demons in the Walls, Demons in the Halls, Demons in my Mind, Demons you will Find." Also, one of the credits bits is "No Rats Were Eaten During the Making of This Film" And yeah, that reveal of the "Death Awaits" door is one of the best in horror cinema, imo - it's the turning point where you realize it's not going to be just another run-of-the-mill haunted house movie.
I love this movie, it's the embodiment of utter hopelessness and despair. What can you hope for when there's no day, just night, there's no exit, just endless corridors, there's no sense of time, there's no reality that makes any logical sense, there's absolutely nothing you can do, but die. This is Hell, there's no escaping it. Can't blame any of the characters for doing stupid things... except setting foot in that place.
@@wolfwing1 Indeed, it manages to do away with this flaw that often come up in these types of movies by having the characters stuck in a reality-altering hell dimension, it continuously shifts to take away any means of escape.
I unashamedly love this movie. It's obviously b-movie quality and low budget, but they used the money super effectively and pulled off some cool scares.
There's a bit that didn't make the edit that I found important in terms of what it's "message" is. When Lance is alone in the tunnels he's looking into the camera and told his audience "fuck you" "This was for you". The second one is underrated in my opinion. I recommend it. Thank you raining madness!
It’s not underrated. It just isn’t that great because act 2 just goes off the walls. And I don’t even remember much of the first act. It has some great moments but it just escalates in a pretty weird way
So this is one of my favourite horror movies but I remember it scaring the hell out of me as a teenager. I watched the trailer for it while I was babysitting and literally threw my phone across the room. The two girls I babysat were six and eight, and the eight year old was particularly sensitive to anything scary (I had to turn off a family friendly tv show when an episode had a witch in it). The six year old begs me to let her watch the trailer too, wanting to see why I freaked out, and I'm thinking there's no way on earth that I can do that. The eight year old was in another room so wasn't aware of any of this, thankfully. The six year old keeps asking me so I eventually decide that it would probably be okay to just show her a still picture of the moment that freaked me out - the ghost/creature girl turning around and her face distorting. So I find a picture of her distorted face, warn the six year old and ask if she's sure she wants to see it, ask her not to tell her mum, and show her when she agrees. Guys, she looked SO disappointed in me and just said "that's not scary" and went back to playing. I was both proud and embarrassed. She asked me about horror movies sometimes but I never let her watch them or gave her too many details, and her mum never mentioned anything so I'm assuming she only spoke about them with me. She's be an adult now (terrifying in itself) and I've never seen her or her sister since, but I like to believe she still likes scary things and maybe thinks of her funny babysitter whenever she watches a horror movie.
I love the kind of horror movies where you're basically given a chance not to damn yourself but after that? Then there's no hope at all. Movies like 1408, Grave Encounters, and Hell House LLC are just top notch amazing horror movies.
1:40 i was gonna be one of those people who brought up Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum even though i've already said it twice before but i cant help it. if you like grave encounters you'll love gonjiam: haunted asylum, a korean film with a similar premise.
I enjoy this one and the Hell House LLC series. I recently rewatched both these series on my recent trip to Eureka Springs for their giant Zombje Crawl event. Just good spooky fun.
Not only set in an abandoned hospital, It was actually filmed in Danvers Asylum in Massachusetts. That hospital inspired HP Lovecraft and was referenced in several of his stories and by extension inspired Arkham Asylum in the Batman universe. I really believe the location has something to do with how tense and oppressive that movie feels
I adore that movie. In my top 2 horror with The Others. They hardly needed to do any set dressing because the place was creepy enough on its own with lots of leftover equipment still there. ‘Hello Gordon.’
Apparently when this movie was made, the asylum was still in operation. I'm curious if they simply used an unused part of the asylum. If you want another movie filmed in an abandoned asylum you should check out Session 9, filmed in the old Danvers State Hospital.
2:06 lol just got to this bit and im thinking.... im sure the main guy was based on zak from ghost adventures lol. great deductioning there dear watson 👍🏻
One theory i personally like is that the reason the caretaker doesnt experience any of that is the ghosts dont mind him or even like him. He comes and does his job without overstaying his welcome, doesnt disrespect them like the grave encounters crew, and has a type of job that would go benignly unnoticed while the asylum was in operation so the staff ghosts wouldnt think hes a patient and the patient ghosts wouldnt see him as an adversary like the medical staff
I love this film. So glad ya'll watched it! The scares can be goofy at times but what makes it scary to me is the atmosphere they setup. Also the "He ran out of cigarettes" line was gold
Mrs. Movies' reactions were incredible, though it was even cooler to see Mr. Movies so creeped out! Great episode. Please tell me you're doing Part 2. I think you'll like it. Plus it answers a few questions, raising others! That one, to me, has an even creepier ending than Part 1 does!
This is one of the found footage films that I really enjoyed when I first saw it, I still enjoy it to this day! I haven’t seen the 2nd one in sooo long though so I can’t say much about that one.
i found this movie to be more funny than scary to me. not just because of the over-use of the :O face jumpscare, but just the dialogue between the crew, and how it was shot. felt more like a parody of ghost adventures than anything else. still really like it, but never felt "scared"
I have this on Blu Ray. The commentary reveals that Zak Bagans of Ghost Adventurers was really popular just then, but the lead actor actually based his persona on an earlier series, Paranormal State, led by Ryan Buell.
@michakrzeminski6049 I'm with you the end is way way wayyyyyyyy off with that poor ended almost mess up the whole movie with a better ended it could have been a part three
@michakrzeminski6049 also there's been others to have watched this movie as well that's how I find out about part two and the three other movies of Hell House. Have you seen any Hell House movies?
The second film isn’t really worth watching. However, the second one has the caretaker explain what happened when he came back! It’s worth seeing that one scene, for explanation purposes😂 But I’m glad y’all had fun with this one! Your next found footage film or two is…..The Taking of Deborah Logan and Gonjiam Haunted Asylum! So far you have Grave Encounters and Hell House. Mine as well get to those too😂
I find most found footage movies pretty bland, but this one is very terrifying what with the existential dread of being unable to escape and the endless night outside.
I do like this one. I always felt like they were maybe inspired by an old JRPG called Corpse Party, which included some similar elements like the spacial/time distortion. Following this, if you want a further dive into the genre, you could try "Noroi:The Curse", a Japanese Found Footage horror that came a few years before this one. Or if you are feeling brave... there's a Korean movie called "Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum", that came out several years after this and which one Letterboxd reviewer called "F***ing terrifying"...and they are not wrong...
It’s so cliche by today’s standards, but when it first came out this was far and away the scariest found footage movie ever. Also love how savagely it roasts every wanna-be ghost hunter “documentary” series out there.

I think the caretaker avoids trouble because he only visits for an hour or two at a time. The group didn't experience anything until they had been there for four or five hours straight. The idea that a haunted place doesn't reveal itself quickly is interesting, as if it takes time for the spirits to realize people are there.
I think that is more to do with them being locked at night, while other people were visiting by day. But yours is also an interesting theory.
Happy to see people finally reacting to Grave Encounters. I saw this movie back when I was in High School. The death of the doctor being overshadowed by the dead of Babe Ruth was such a nice touch.
