David, I gotta say, I think you rank within my top 3 favorite UA-camrs that I subscribe to. You are a great asset and you are greatly appreciated. I learned so much from your Mitleider gardening video's and loved the ones where you lived with no power for days. You offer so much. Keep it up and thanks!
I'm glad you are gardening and protecting your plants.
Beautifully built. Much sturdier than most I have seen in DIY programs.
Very good idea
I'm with you. We get a lot of UV here in Texas. I figured out the cost in buying big box store plastic and having to replace it plus all the work and for me the greenhouse plastic comes out the winner.
I like the overhang on the roof at the sides, gives you some walk around space to pick tomatoes from both sides of the plants and also you could put a bunch of grow bags down that space too with shorter plants.
Thank you very much. I'm glad to share and am grateful to hear it helps others.
One word....."Beautiful".
Sorry, but you really need to study roof architecture before commenting, this is certainly not beautiful
Just build and they will come...And tell you how you should have done it differently!!! No shortage of critics in this world.
No, there is armchair criticism and there is pointing out the obvious - it's a poor design.
Don't be a horse's ass. If you have a valid critique, expound on it; otherwise you're being a waste of bandwidth.
Awesome. I am glad to hear it works so well for you. Keep up the gardening.
The wire stretchers, while not necessary do come in handy for strings for climbing vines and running plants. They also come in handy for hanging grow lights for extra light during winter months. The plastic coated wire like used for a dog run cable work well too. I am getting ready to build my green house real soon so it will be ready for an early spring planting. Thanks for all the updates and suggestions you put out.
When I said "wire stretchers" I was referring to the turnbuckles on the top wire. The top wire is needed to grow vertical plants. Because you could have 600 lbs of tomatoes weighing on the top wire we recommend using at least a 9 gauge wire. Anything less can snap under the weight. Having the covered in the garden greenhouse will allow you to plant weeks earlier than anyone in your area not doing this. Best of luck to you in your Spring garden.
I thought the same thing when I started this method. However after the plants grew and filled the 3-1/2 foot isles I understood why the spacing is important.
That is possible I think with a lower quality plastic. You can also buy woven plastic that has fiberglass reinforcement woven through it.
I have such a small area to cover, I use the Home Depot plastic, it lasts me the winter season. I just take it off in the spring and throw it out. If I was on a larger scale, I would definately invest in the greenhouse plastic. This is a nice sized structure!
I've read that pvc pipe reacts with plastic if in direct contact. They sell felt tape to avoid contact to avoid shortening the life.
Great Video - Just the tips I need for the mountains of Colorado where I live!
Thank you David! You are always there helping us and just when we need it most!
this is super excellent...i wanted to avoid pvc but all this reinforcement is a winner.....
I think if you are not in a high wind area and you have vertical 2x4 supports on the ends of the 4x4's you may not need the brace supports. But if you have any scrap 4x4's you might just put up the braces since they can only help.
The wire tightener is called a turn buckle. Thanks for the vid. Looks well built and will have to steal the turn buckle idea.
Very nice! One suggestion I have would be to add springs to the long support wires. I use springs designed for high-tension electric fencing available at farm stores or Tractor Supply for a few dollars. The springs keep the wire taught and compensate for expansion and contraction; wire can 'grow' several inches in hot weather and 'shrink' several inches in cold weather, pulling on the frame work. I've seen electric fences without springs tear themselves apart over time when this occurs, "An ounce of prevention".....
Hint: weak springs as used for screen doors won't work and cost about the same. High-tension fencing springs are compression type.
Wire tensioners, I believe are called Roman screws (at least in my country...)
Looks good. FYI I used 6 mil Home Depot poly on my greenhouse and it lasted 7 years with wind and snow on it.
Wow, that is awesome! I've seen 6 mil plastic from HD and Lowes deteriorate in less then one year and lose an entire crop of seedlings because of it.
@@LDSPrepper it was probably because it wasn’t the uv resistant film. If it’s just regular film it will deteriorate fast and just fall apart.
I double my greenhouse. top is cattle panels with wire mesh for hail. under that, about 4-6 inches is my plastic on a pvc frame.
Great update, David. This is a really nice garden cover system.
Thanks for sharing with us.
One tip. Use the gray electric conduit PVC. It's UV treated and resistant. The white plumbing PVC isn't. The conduit comes in diameters from 1/2 inch to 2 inches
Great Idea Sam...
i just got 1” pex and 1/2” pvc to snap into. i cut out 1/2” strip from the pex. the pex is more bendable even at 1” and it’s looking like it is going to work out really well
I whish I had something this amazing / good looking in my Back yard.
This maybe a thing with this growing system but it seems like there could be more grow beds under all that great covering. Couldn't the beds be closer together or wider. Non gardener asking I will admit. Thanks for the video, I appreciate the work you put into this.
I built a small greenhouse and the PVC reacted to the greenhouse film and the film became brittle in a year and a half. The makers of the film told me my warranty was not good because of this. I was ticked off- I consulted with them when I was building and told them I was using PVC.
You must paint or coat the pvc to avoid direct contact with plastic
great video! I'm collecting materials for building a greenhouse here in Sand Hollow Idaho next year - I hope! I keep finding more work to do on our acreage each year but I am planning on doing the greenhouse and a water-catch system next year. Thanks for the video and the suggestions!
Very nice design. I will try to replicate one but a bit snakler as I do not have the space. Excellent video! Thank you!
home depot 6mil plastic is the best i have had mine going on 3 years and we are in Canada with heavy snow, strong winds here and extreme cold..
You should make little booklets on the plans of this greenhouse the how you prep the garden and how the greenhouse works and sell on amazon. I would buy it.
Very nice loop house build - a lot of good pointers on how to thanks for the info - the farmer should YT aquaponics systems after mentioning wanting to expand his yearly yield. There's so many inexpensive ways to put a system together...now able to harvest fresh organic fish,,
Instead of plastic you can use mosquito screening,it last for many years and allow rain fall, but is bad for cold weather, but you can just the mosquito screen with clear plastic in winter times.
best wire, that wire tends to stretch at any point barbless 2 strand wire. As long as it will hold over two thousand pounds of produce and plants
Not trying to be controversial, But I got 6 mil plastic from home depot and and it has lasted 5 years now. I live in Michigan where we are snowed in 5 months of the year. I will say greenhouse plastic is clearer and if I could afford it I would go that way. But for someone on a budget it will work. I wouldn't go less than 6 mil thou.
It looks great, but a little triangulation would make it much stronger if needed in the future. A triangle is much stronger than a square.
More strength with less material.
But once again, it looks great and enjoy your creation.
Wow, I bet that works well. I'd love to see a video on it. If you have one or make one please send it as a video reply if you can.
My problem is the hail would rip right through it. So although I prefer a hoop greenhouse, I’ll likely have to spend the extra money and go with 2x4’s and Lexan.
I see room for improvement myself. The thought of some way of directing water from rain, stream, etc, would be a thought.
My 6 mil plastic only lasts 6-8 months. It truly depends on how high the UV gets.
We get it hard here in Nebraska. I'm up to trying this Sun Master stuff. I'm getting too old to do this very often. :(
Keep up the great work!
best wire, that wire tends to stretch at any point barbless 2 strand wire. As long as it will hold over two thousand pounds of produce and plants
+John Kuzzmeski best wire, that wire tends to stretch at any point barbless 2 strand wire. As long as it will hold over two thousand pounds of produce and plants
Wire tighteners are called turnbuckles.
Thanks professor
Where is this? Our Texas panhandle winds would eat that up.
I dont think I would bring the side walls in more. I think you are underestimating how large plants can grow in this system.
Awesome for a greenhouses but, go to an engineer, or use an engineered steel (modern) Quonset hut. They are very affordable and easier to put together.
great greenhouse, i want to make mine like yours
No, it's awful, do not copy this.
By us, we call them turnbuckles... I like that term, though, "Roman Screws"!
The wire thing a mobobs are called turn buckles. I use them to keep my car port tight. They are sometimes used for cross supporting frame work. I did not see how he was using them on this system, will have to go back and watch again. Anyway, there you have it.
They are used for the plants. You run a piece of string from the wire to the plant below, its for vertical growing, which is the Mittleider Method! Instead of growing out, you grow them up. Each wire runs over a raised row. In his what looks to be 10' per section can expect to hold roughly 600 lbs each. Which is typical for 10-12 tomato plants in a system like this.
I love your videos BTW
@0:50 that is a ridge beam.
3:45 that wire tightner is a Turnbuckle
Correct, thank you.
güzel olmuş çok yararlı oldu aynısını Türkiye de ben de yapacağım.
Would have been nice to know the size of this greenhouse.
Mine is about 25' x 35'.
I have a "Beekeeping" playlist. I just uploaded some new videos last week. Take a peek. I hope they help.
How about bear resistant too??
great job
You should call your local tax assessor office and ask how many square feet of a structure you can build on your land before it affects your property taxes. Mine said "200 square feet"... so I figure I can build a 14' x 14' structure which gives 196 square feet... or if you want it more rectangle instead of square, play with the width x length.
Kandy Marie 200 sq ft seems the norm. however, where I am, that's for a non habitable structure (shed, garage, etc) For a frame structure (ie hoop house), it is 500 sq ft.
Also, watch out for official language… where we might call this a "greenhouse", the USDA calls it a "high tunnel" (hoop house). Additionally, there are no walls, so might not be considered a "permanent" structure (barely semi-permanent)
9 gauge wire is not the best wire, that wire tends to stretch at any point and can cause breakage, Use barb-less 2 strand wire from a feed store, or High tensile wire. I have done a lot of fencing and can tell you that 9 Gauge wire does not have the tensile strength you need.
+William Glaser I like the idea of the barbless 2 strand wire. As long as it will hold the weight like 9 gauge wire that would work as well. I estimated last year we had over two thousand pounds of produce and plants hanging from our four 9 gauge wires.
+LDSPrepper I sure that it would support the weight, I have stretched a 1/4 mile of barb less 2 strand wire more than 20 feet beyond what is laid out and lightly tight, I can tell you that it will support 300 lbs man standing on the wire between 17 feet spaced post. I may also be cheaper, I am not update with current prices but i am sure it would be cheaper for footage wise.
Great info, and it is also adjustable if the wire ever does stretch. Just unwrap the stick where it's secured parallel to the wire, give a few more twists, and secure it again.
3:40 turn buckles.
Nice set up. I was in the process of buying some greenhouse plastic 4 year film from Blue Ridge. It states the warranty is voided if the PVC frame is not primed. Every pvc frame I've seen the pvc isn't primed.
They have tape made for that purpose and you can use duct tape also.
Just had an ad for greenhouse come up on your page telling me that all of greenhouse designs are useless compared to the one in the ad....
Hey LDSPrepper, love your videos, would love to see more on your bees, I just bought 3 Brushy Mountain Garden Hives, can't wait for next Spring. Anyway, check out Nolts Produce Supply in PA. They pretty much have the best quality and best prices, there same plastic is over $100 cheaper.
Best, Jason
Would love to know what is considered high wind for your area where this greenhouse is located? What's considered high MPH sustained and gusting?
I have the same thoughts. I’m in Florida so when I think of high wind gusts its in the 80+ mph range.
Very timely video as I am finishing up an almost identical in the garden greenhouse for my two 18" boxes. I still need to put my roof support up. I don't have high winds issue, but do have heavy snow loads so I plan on doing this girdle type support for the PVC pipes.
I noticed that the home owner chose not to have the brace supports on the 4x4 posts. Instead, he is relying on the side wall 2x4s. I currently have it this way as well. Would you/he recommend adding the brace or leave it as is?
where can I find the instruction to build this greenhouse..I could not find it on any link provided. we have most of the supplies at hand now but need the instruction PLEASE.
Look through LDS prepper YTs
This is great, but I think he has his plastic on inside out. Pretty sure the logo goes on the outside.
Nice
use ptfe plastic and it will last much longer
Could you not use solar vacume tubes with liquid metal to heat your green house? All you would need would be a insulated underground cistern heat sink to run through the night? Novartis
About how much did it cost to build? The sound in the video isn't playing.
Could you not use 8 in construction pipe burried at the corners of the green house has a cold air return to heat your green house evenly?
I live in Florida,it's year 24/7 365 days growing season, but the heat is bad for lettuce, blueberry and many northern fruits I love.I don't need a green house.I need a cooling house,or shade house.
Keepskatin Opposite to me. I live in Scotland and our growing season is rather short. But we can grow lettuce and blueberries well. I prefer more exotic stuff though!
Keepskatin - All you need is some shade cloth.
Keepskatin I have the same issue, north Florida. I only need a green house from Nov-Apri. I want one I can take down. This would save the life of the plastic and not get blown away in a storm.
LDS, or who ever, any idea how much more life one could get if in the off season the Greenhouse Film was protected from the UV light of the sun ? Thanks , BBB
The 4x4 cross beams are 8ft? I noticed that the 10ft? pvc roof bends just perfect to make the roof arch.
That was great! What mil on the plastic?
Thank you for your video.
1) What is the mil (thickness) of the plastic you used?
2) In my back yard, there are many squirrels and few cats, is it a good idea for me to use plastic for the greenhouse?
Doesn't the flat side catch wind more.
What advantage does starting with a T-frame and then adding all that support give you over just starting with for corner posts?
WAIT TILL THE TOWN HALL RAISES HIS PROPERTY TAX FOR THE GREENHOUSE
Pay 'em in tomatoes!
please, you can tell me the measures of the your greenhouse? and distance between
pvc rib. Thanks!
Nice,.. Im planning my greenhouse.. But what are the wires for up above across the T-frames ? Thankx
Parabéns top
Thanks so much LDS Prepper! I used the info you provided in your videos to come up with my own high wind/heavy snow load greenhouse here in Maine. Here's the link to the slideshow I put together: ua-cam.com/video/7SbqOQngucE/v-deo.html
I just added a follow up video which is a "walk-around" with commentary. Once again - it's many thanks to LDSPrepper! Here is the URL: ua-cam.com/video/xUWN-cMmz5k/v-deo.html
Familiar with Adapt 2030's new radio show on Revolution Radio, Studio A, 10 pm-12 midnight, Eastern Standard Time USA? Started Feb 1 2018. Adapt host discusses the impending worldwide ice age / Grand Solar Minimum and with two others offer solutions. Adapt's interviews on his own channel are excellent as are his short videos. Buy BULK food now while prices are low and we'll before 2019 when the cold really sets in, for perhaps 2-5 decades! Cheers from Massachusetts.
Hello, is the plastic film noisy when it's windy?
Dear LDSPrepper I am planning to start a program with eco-tunnels in South Africa but for commercial production. I am thinking of utilizing some of the elements and components of this structure as they make great sense. What size would you propose please? Thank you for this posting. Warmest Regards Derick
turn buckle
I am talking about the DYI greenhouse for heavy snow and high wind areas.
Can this design be used for something around 2x2 meters?
I live in Norway and would like a place to grow bonsai and extend the growing season. I live at the top of a small mountain and we get full sun but very strong winds around 40mph. Would need to weigh the structure down but my question is if it's possible for the structure to hold against these winds?
Does he have specifications on what he did and the dimensions?
Whats the point of the pvc piping?
I got a 15 by 30 Garden how big do I have to make the hoops
What are you calling heavy winds?
how long does the poly last?
No triangulation. This greenhouse would not live through Florida winds. Florida requires rebar thru holes in metal pipes underground -all in cement. Ok for New England but not for Florida. Those conduit half loops with two screws also violate code here-need the two bolt or twist around pipe type clamps.
An arch is far stronger than a triangle. I'm assuming you're referring to reinforcing the verticals then yes I'd totally agree. I would also agree to use a banding type clamp / tie for the PVC. Also note temporary / non permanent structures typically do not require permits. Most states classify a permanent structure as one with a foundation - this structure in my opinion would not qualify but that's entirely up to debate with your local government. Lastly one thing for everyone to bear in mind - PVC becomes brittle after extended exposure to UV.
aXBlackDeathXa A triangle is THE strongest geometric shape known to man, bar none.
What I was saying is that a big wind on the end wall could fold those arches flat to the ground with no pipe being bent. Just like roof trusses being installed risk falling over like dominoes even with a 2 by 4 along the ridge. You have to make a triangle in each dimension to avoid a structure that can fold flat. I agree your arches are plenty strong for a wind perpendicular to the long greenhouse dimension. Of course if somehow the wind lifted the pipes on one side, you would risk having a big kite, bur this does not tend to happen even though the arch is a bit like an airplane wing. The end wall wind is the one your structure might not resist - guy wires from both ends would help.
Where is this greenhouse located?
I'm in North PA and looking to build a green house what's recommend to heat during night time
"Wire tighteners"= turnbuckles.
Thank you very much for sharing and taking the time to video it. I have watched several DIY video's and I still have the same question. Where do I get the good 6 ml heavy duty plastic from? I want it to last and good against uv? I live in Ga. (GOD's Country} any help would be greatly appreciated.
