That looks great. Just as an aside, I was living temporarily in a 100-year-old farmhouse. I noticed that the compost pile was very warm and winter was coming. I dug into the pile, arched some PVC pipe, covered it with a heavy plastic and covered the edges with compost. It was only 1.5 tall. I planted my salad greens; we had 2 feet of snow and it formed an icecap atop the arch, probably due to the heat radiating from the compost pile. We had the best, crisp, bug free salads all winter. It was my poor man's greenhouse. Someday, I will have a greenhouse like yours.
That's an old standard - use either manure or compost as a base to make a 'hothouse'! You can also do a simple box frame (any size) plus windowpane hinged and set at an angle, and tap that decomposing heat for growing winter veg
We used to build greenhouse with just PVC and plastic sheets about 4-5 tall. When it got warm enough in Spring we just undid the tie downs and picked it up and moved it. Your's is much nicer.
Yes, every year while prepping a site for the cold frame, (I move it every fall to a sunny area that has fresh compost), I dig a 1-1/2' hole and add 1 month-old manure for the first 1/2', (the manure I use is left outside that first month. I find it helps to rinse the strong urea out). I then put a layer of fresh grass clippings, shredded leaves, veggie scraps chopped fine, and small twigs that are all mixed for the next 1/2', and finally the remaining 1/2' is well-composted soil. The cold frame is set over that area. I use a few straw bales around the back and two sides and another 1/2 bale halves again against the front. I have used natural twine, or vines to tie the bales against the cold frame, but in the last few years, I just drive in long branches in front of the straw bales. The manure and shredded items start working right away and generate a lot of heat inside that space. I plant salad greens, spinach, and arugula and within a week, they start popping up. I keep a thermometer in the cold frame because I do not want to fry the seedlings. It stays about 70 during the day and only dips to about 55-60 at night. As an alternative to manure for heat, I have also taken liter and 1/2 gallon bottles that are painted black, fill them with water, and placed them in the side along the back. They absorb the sun's heat during the day and release it at night. I only use this method in the spring when temps are consistently above freezing and the heat from the manure is not as strong. Also, during a sunny day, condensation tends to build up on the glass and drips to the soil. You still need to supplement with weekly watering only early during a bright sunny day. You want to make sure that it is well absorbed. A great alternative to a greenhouse.
You've just become my new friend and you don't even know it! My backyard has an extreme slope so I guess I'll be using a lot of cinder blocks to level out one end but I'll be building this greenhouse within the next month. My Southern Wisconsin growing season starts a little bit later than a lot of places but this will come in very very handy
Nice and easy, practical and cheap. It is considered "coloring outside the lines" using PVC pipe for structural purposes but in this case of a greenhouse it is almost like genius level. But since the pipe is pipe take it to the next level and use it as pipe too, at the same time. In other words hook the pipes together and glue on a garden hose connection to them and use the pipes to hold and transport the water to the plants. Since they are already in the greenhouse and already being used as the structure you can have water in them also. So now you hook sprayer heads where you need over the beds with a timer and all the watering is taken care of. All you need to do in the end once set up, is to hook a garden hose to it and set the timer. IT would make a good video, double use PVC build. You could just drill little holes where you need in the pipes to install tiny spray heads. Just tap the tiny hole and screw in the head. But like i said earlier all the pipes need to be hooked and glued together so you could use 90 degree turns on 3 of the 4 bottom ends of the structure but use tees on all other bottoms and just connect them all together, but that 4th bottom end tee is where you glue on the garden hose connection.
I'm glad you enjoyed it & thanks for subscribing Des. You can start to live the good life yourself with just a few small planter pots or a raised bed. Blessings on all your gardening projects!
You are without a doubt the King of Toe Nailing. Never seen so many. I love the build, the design is very cool. That white tape is going to come loose in a year. The rubber is a great idea, but staples look just fine. Brilliant idea leaving the plastic overhanging the window.
Haha thank you, the white tape did loose most its tackiness, the rubber with staples/zip ties works much better and I have since switched to that for new builds. Blessings on your greenhouse & garden projects, thank you for watching & Subscribing!
That's Momma 😂 I hope this video helps you with your build, let me know if you need the plastic attachment clips. Thank you for watching & Subscribing!
On the pvc clamps I had the problem of the clamps cutting the plastic. So I bought a cheap garden hose and cut pieces 1/2" longer and put them on first and then the pvc clamps. Worked great.
Sounds like a jersey accent, mine is long gone, but it reminds me of my distant youth and the good people I knew there in south jersey. Nice job on this greenhouse project!
I really appreciate the time you, your wife & shout out to Dad took to build & show us every step of the way. Watching version 1.0 I had so many questions, but this answers them all. There was nothing he couldn’t build. Unfortunately he’s passed on and I miss him every day. Thanks again for sharing this. You have a new subscriber. Dave in PA.
My mother and I built this during C0V1D, there wasn't much else we could do during that time. I wanted to show how anyone could build this greenhouse. Yes, She is a saint for all her patience and help over the years.
.What a fantastic way to have a lot of veggies or even start some rose bushes .No need to cut off the edge where there is extra plastic on the sides maybe fold it back on itself and use a few more clamps .
Thank you for showing (halfwits at construction work), how to do quality work. 👍 Incredible what the internet can do as a tool for learning. Step by step, with attention to detail, it can be done. One of the best tutorial for greenhouse and a great greenhouse, i have to say. Look very nice and sturdy. Just one question. Why didn't u put the midlle horizontal boards on the sides on the outside of pipes? This way you could fix plastic to that board and roll it up in the summer up to this board and you wouldn't have to secure all the screws with tapes also, because they would be on the inside of greenhouse.

This is awesome, one thing - I wouldn't use pressure treated wood in a garden because the chemical process that preserves the wood can leech heavy metals into soil over time. I'm going to make one of these this year!
and pressure treated rots just as the same, Ive used pressure treated outdoors before and its hardly noticeable. Burning wood on the other hand has lasted me decades!
That's awesome! Makes me happy to know that this video will allow others to enjoy gardening more! Thank you for watching & Subscribing Connie, If you need any assistance or greenhouse clips let me know livingthegoodlife1.wixsite.com/livingthegoodlife

What was the cost of the materials for this? Great job! I can’t wait to build one
Love this video! I will definitely make this.

Prime and paint all the lumber, would add years to this great project. Two levels in case one is lying, That's great.
A top video!
Thanks Stefan
