May I correct you: South Africa is still called Suid-Afrika. South Africa has 11 official languages. Multiple indigeneous languages, and European-based ones. Both the Dutch and British colonised South Africa. Hence the respective legacies live on, not least of all in the languages. Today, English and Afrikaans have been accorded official status in the country, in conjunction with other 9 languages. What is Afrikaans? It is a daughter language of Dutch. Since the Dutch settled here, it became a language not only passed down to their descendants, but also to the indigenous people, as well as to the imported slaves from Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia, India and The Phillipines. The Dutch kitchens are where the slaves were kept, and so they learnt the language of their masters. They added their own lingo, but the indigenous people, The Khoi, did the same. And so, Dutch persisted in the 17th century bubble so far away from Europe and the rest of the world, but with somewhat of an external influence. It was influenced by indigenous langauges, as well as those form Asian slaves. And so, Dutch creoloised and became a sort of Africanised Dutch, referred to by the Dutch as Afrikaans, and initially "Kitchen Dutch". This Afirkaans exists today, and is the language especially used by Dutch descendants, and also the Coloured people (a mixed-race group descended from Dutch, Asian slaves and indigenous Khoisan). Going back in history, Afrikaans first became the official language of South Africa after the Dutch descendants established apartheid, before indigenous languages were ever accorded such status. The word Apartheid, in fact, is an Afrikaans word literally meaning "apart-ness", and going further, to be more proper: "separation". Being THE OFFICIAL langage during the Apertheid years (in conjunction with English) gave them power to dictate. Letterheads contained both the names "South Africa" and "Suid-Afrika", English and Afrikaans respectively. Thus, it is wrong to say that Suid-Afrika is the former name. Remember, Afrikaans persisted in having its status as a language termed "official". And having official status today, "Suid-Afrika" is still used, as well as "South Africa", but also their equivalents in the other 9 languages. So, South Africa does not have an old name.😮
