His timing is absolutely insane.. a human machine.
Seriously. TIL my DAW has human competition.
That ride cymbal is pure gold. Love it.
Know what cymbal it is?
It sure looks like a Sabian Artisan ride to me.
Okay, thanks! :)
it sounds pure bronze to me.
I always thought Sabian sucked but that ride is seriously one of the best I’ve ever heard.
Not only as a ride but also a crash.
Fuck. Now I want one.
I really like how "jazzy" his hands can play everything. It´s dirty, but so controled at the same time: INSANE! And that Bass Drum Pattern is freak... hahaha
what an amazing musician
I seriously just cried
"I'm trying to bring danger back into Rock and Roll"
+The 80/20 Drummer gg allin!
Great quote 80/20. You also participate to this mission ...
"I'm trying to bring click funnels back into Rock & Roll" - 80/20
How about doing a video how to figure it out ,technically and rethmyic
How about doing a video how to figure it out ,technically and rethmyic
That ride sounds amazing
Yes it does!
his snare is tuned to perfection
Aaron Castrillon
If it was , he wouldn’t need tape.
@Caleb looks like a sonor snare well tuned controlled by gaff. maybe a high mid boost by 4 db but certainly eq not its basis.
i know i tried fixing snare probs by eq its no use, it must be tuned first!
which one
Roy Beckerman everyone uses tape now. Traditional tuning is just not practical anymore. It takes years to learn, an hour to do, and most likely won’t last you the entire performance. Not everyone has that time, especially working drummers
MusicMusicMusic it’s a Gretsch snare drum
Between Mark and Matt Garstka, the balance of urgency and groove is just awesome.
Truly one of the best technical drummer in last years I had the privilege of watching and meeting him in person... Just inspires me to continue practicing.
groove, speed, tempo, skill = PERFECTION :) this Nerd guy just INSANE :D
Dude! I don’t have words for how much I truly love this drummer’s style. Freaking AMAZING!!
Thumbs up for actually learning that bass drum line hahah! ^^
That's the rhythm I knock on doors! hahaha
He wrote it!
Wow!!! How have I not heard of this guy!!! A true master!
That snare drum sounds...perfect!
Yeah what do you thnk it is? A Gretsch, 13" X 6.5, something like that?
His innovation in jazz rhythm and additional sounds can be readily seen in Bowie's Blackstar album... (Mark was the drummer)
Nice selection/placement of a GG Allen quote. Mark is one of the hippest on so many levels.
I'm with everyone else "How the fuck do you even memorize or count that bass rhythm?" First time I tried it, I depressed myself realizing the master timing this dude has.
+D.J. Mays Most drummers wouldn't know how to listen to this, much less play it.
+D.J. Mays There are technical explanations for it. I don't know the time myself, but that same rhythm on the bass has a pattern. I'm sure after hearing this many times now there's a more simple time signature that can be found to help find the time that's really arranged for this. Only experienced readers can really near an understanding of whatever that time is.
+D.J. Mays I think the part with the type writer hits is in 4 and the next section is in 5? Right?
+Spencer Zick I think you have it right... or close. The main thing I listen for is hearing the one beat and finding it again. That always helps. But you still could be right. When they do common time and odd time following up, there's usually some off the wall time signature; things like 7/16 or sometimes 9/4. I'll be looking more into this.
+Christian Lee Never understood why anybody would care about time signatures when they have no real meaning for players most of the time. They matter when the placement is totally mind blowing in some particular parts and you count the bar. Ok. But even this case you could possibly be unaware of a signature - just count from the note you are sure when to play. Time signatures for composers not players.
And anyway if you want to play outside the learned material you should feel the signature because no way you'd play a descent solo while counting 9\8 silently.
He so articulate! Love his playing!! Great job Mark!
3:59 God! Why does this moment get me every time?!
yes!
Wow! Simply fantastic!
Seen Mark Live and let me tell you he has impressive technique and timing, this video seen it like a 100 times and still can't get enough, that loop in background and obviously tons of practice makes Mark Guiliana an elite drummer of our time.
Oooh I just got goosebumps, a blinding performance, masterful
Until just a few minutes ago I had never heard of Mark Guiliana; now I need to watch his videos for at least an hour. This guy is a drum monster and human metronome.
I remember finding this song in middle school, it blew me away.
This guy's a beast... I've been following his work for about a year and a half and I must he's really incredible! And if any of you guys want to check some of his work, start with Mehliana (Brad Mehldau & Mark Guiliana) it's, in my opinion, one of 2014's top records
*and I must SAY he's really (...)
You've heard his material with Avishai Cohen right? Mark has been all across the board.
He's rly unique
Thanks Man U just unlocked something for me
@@CamerOneiric His stuff with Now vs Now is awesome too
That snare sounds so good. Wow. Killer stuff!
This is so amazing.
Man this guy can groove hard. Super inspirational video. Thanks Vic Firth for the great video.
such an awesome voice on the drums!
drumming like it is year 2116
Can't get enough!
This video is great. Great drummer, great drumming, but also it shows that you dont need lots of drums to have a good time!
Yes! Now I want to down size
everythings grooves so perfectly
Apparently that flippin' incredible ride is a 23" Artisan Light Ride (Prototype)
Want.
Richard Gross a little over 600$ and its yours.
Jim Kowalczyk I know man, crazy money. I'm in the UK, the 22" is £420+
A cut above the normal drum-centric solo performances! I will listen to this again.
That is amazing!
What just happened? I think my brain just got fucking melted...
Mark is the Idea nerd of drumming. Love the way he puts the beat where you just don't expect it then makes the groove soo damn elastic. "I LOVE THIS KATZ RHYTHMICAL MIND". His cymbal sound combination is always fresh and different.
Remember it's all ideas and energy until we add technique the form . Thats why I call it DRUMNASTICS. Thanks Mark. LOVE U DUDE!!!
my goodnesa that snare sounds fabulous ❤❤
this is beautiful
Totally dug this !
love this@!
Love the intro to this song.
Top of the hi hat is actually antenna to comunicate with aliens using radiowaves.
god the intro with the typewriter is just so incredible. also, something to show to a non-musician! that is the kind of thing that blows their minds xD
man i was thinkn its Morse code or something since he locked in a basement...lol. Very creative and clean!!
He just wears the glasses to look even smarter.
Whoa, doc! Killing!
His feel is so relaxed! Despite all the syncopation it never rushes (L)
brilliant!!
What the fuck.
This is so rad!!
Just bloody good 🤯😎
Wonderful !
That was dope!!!
Man, this is great!!
really awesome! :D
huge huge huge drummer!
Why would anyone give this a thumbs down. This drummer is musical and technically sound. It must be jealousy.
I would say, Genius!
Muy bueno, Mark!
excellent !
Wow, pretty out there! Great playin
That was awesome. The transition from Make Me Dance back into Locked in a Basement was incredible. Only disappointment is I didn't get to see him play any of the epic fills from the outro of Make Me Dance. Still, so good. This guy is the master.
He's so an amazing drummer, a big exemple and humbly an influence, as i try to find new ideas in my own videos and improvistions
Perfect
magic groove
I would pay for the transcriptions... why isn't this isn't this thing??
I have the complete transcriptión
Onr of the most unique drummers of our generation.
My Boy. ! Jersey

Madre de Dios, What a Drummer!!! 😲
That face at 0:32 is God damn top notch!
Reminds me of David Garibaldi some times...Especially some of his grooves... What a great musician, bravo....
amazing. almost radiohead like in some of those middle bits. definitely a danger to rockn roll, as it stands!
Sick
Superb
omg = oh mark guiliana
The greatest drummer on earth.
that ride bell sounds amazing
hermoso....!!!!
@Vic Firth It would be awesome to see Rex Hardy Jr. and Jonathan "Ginger" Hamilton do Performance Spotlight video.
YES MARK IS THE MAN.
Just memorizing the kick line deserves a special prize.
Sick timing..
I believe he used the same move he plays at 4:00 on a song from Bowie's Blackstar
The one and only
Mark is the killer!
Goodness gracious.
wow.!! me pregunto como hace eso!! ojala pudiera tocar un dia asi
sick.
nice sounding snare :D
Very smart😎
I'm glad Adam Sandler got into a more honorable profession.
hahaha!
best
Micah Ramsingh Holy mega shits, he does look like Sandler
As long as he doesn't sing.
and Jason Schwartzman
♥
I would love the transcription of it and the sound track to play along AEJ New Orleans
grandee
What ride is that? Sounds incredible.
Mark guiliana is truly genius. I especially love the snare's sounds. Is it the Claviotto's one? Also, I wanna know the name of the drum set. It doesn't seems a Gretsch drum.
