He's not soloing, he's composing.
So many solos consist of only demonstrations of speed and technical dexterity. This solo is way beyond that. He's telling a story, constructing themes that he returns to. It's so beautiful.
And it's worth noting that the most technical flurries of dense notes are played at very low volume, while very simple passages are often played with tons of velocity, enough that he rises from his seat. This alone makes this solo almost an inversion of the overwhelming number of drum solos you'll ever see.
What an idea- the more notes you play, the quieter you play. Seems like a simple idea...but how many guys can pull it off, while leading us through a thematic journey?
Musical and mesmerizing.
If you don't get it, watch again.
Totally agree!
Certainly, I had to watch it 2 or 3 times to get what you said. Let me tell you you were absolutely right
I learned from him to bring character & humor to playing, also working with subtlety and silent twists that emphasize the song. But he couldn't be more away from my usual heroes like Gavin Harrison. Maybe Benny Greb is somewhere in between stylewise.
Yes,just wanted to agree.
my washing machine does a great solo at spin cycle.
Having the courage leave space and make it musical is a great thing.
I play drums and if I could create melody and a story like that I'd be a happy man.
necesitas ver a "antonio sanchez", you need see "antonio sanchez"
What in the world?! I've literally never seen a solo played like this. Mark is a mad man and I love it!!
oh, hey Gabe, whats up?
I think people need to realize that this is Mark's style. If you're the best at something, you're going to play that as a performance and discuss it. He utilizes subdivisions and breaking them down as fast as he can and then bringing them up. He's also a master at creating space while at the same time filling it. Just understand that him "playing the same thing over and over" is very impressive.
There is such a beautiful amount of chaotic finess within this man's playing. like the mad scientist of jazz dumming. Sounds all over the place, but to a refined ear, you can see Mark is making music with the drums!
It's almost as if he's doing morse code on the drums in a musical way and then exploring the musicality of the instrument itself. His playing on Bowie's final album is testament to that..
it's so far away from "wanting to impress" drumming, highly appreciated & inspiring.
I feel like he puts so much thought into every note he hits. Like each one of his notes can be translated into words and he's writing a play.
It's so interesting to see how Mark Guiliana plays with the drums
Mark Guiliana is ten thousand times the musician of anyone leaving a negative comment here. So just do yourself a favor and don't leave one. You're only making yourself look like an idiot to all of us who know anything about the instrument.
yes!! love how tight those toms are tuned and the snare and the sound of that kick.
dude gets off his throne... loves playin drums!!!
shit's fresh
He shows in such grear manner that today's drummers don't need to play these huge long and fast tom-snare fills and soli to be respected. The fact that technique and feeling gained so much attention over the last two decades is totally shown in drummers like him!
Best drum set clinic of the conference!
Arrived here after hearing the fabulous drumming on Blackstar; new to me and a great feel player.
+sobellfanatic I'm jealous of you. I love it when hearing an album opens a hold new world of music.
Oh man, you're in for a treat. Mark is one of the best young cats around.
+sobellfanatic I went to check out "Blackstar" because of your comment! :)
been looking forward to a good video of Mark playing for a long time now...thanks Vic Firth!
+Larry Davis there are many more with Mark on our channel! Check 'em out :-)
Insane! It's like we're listening to him think aloud!
It's fascinating watching him go through different decisions in his mind before settling on one and playing it
I see this vid every once in a while. I always manage to find new inspirational ideas and phrases. Thanks Mark and Vic Firth!!!!
I love this
this is amazing, I love it. sounds improvised. I think that's the right way to do it when you want to be totally genuine.
Mark is using the whole dynamic and percussive range this instrument has to offer
One of my fav drummers of all time, period...guys a genius
incredibly creative drumming. would be great if mark put out a c.d. of just his own drum compositions like this one -- just him no other musicians.
A friend of mine showed me this when it came out and I hated it and just dumbed it down to being an artsy pretentious drum solo, just not understanding it at all. Little was I to know, Mark over the course of the next six months would become my favourite drummer. I come back to this video quite alot and get something new from it each time and each time cringing at my initial reaction more and more
Everyone who grows as a musician has a moment (or several) like this, good on you for admitting this
now this.... this is how you keep your audiences attention. bravo, sir.
I keep returning to this. masterful phrasing
+Vic Firth thank you for another great video!!!
This is freaking amazing.
actually he is not playing drum, he is telling somethings to us..
exactly
they did! :)
helal be!
Yes, exactly
love this! so wild and different
Watching this on a daily basis 😤😮💨🥴❤
Thankful for all these PASIC Vids... I sure wish they all didn't sound like they were recorded with one room mic
Amazing control.
Can definitely hear the Tony Williams and Elvin Jones influence.
I wouldn't be surprised if he studied Jojo Mayer's playing either.
some Roy Haynes, definitely Tony, and modern breakcore/electronica.
Wow this was very impressive!
Feels like I´ve witnessed a conversation!
a master fully in control of his craft
Beautiful
Fantastic
The only player who can keep groove with these crazy notes.
Impresionante!
HOW CAN PEOPLE DISLIKE THIS VIDEO?
Ladies and gentlemen ... the Jackson Pollock of drumming. Fresh.
Often MJ is fucking around with all the noise we try to eliminate from the instrument like snare buzz and striking the rim. He also incorporates poise into his performance. This is a real exhibit. A true artist
his playing on Black Star is incredible.
Since Blackstar I have become a huge fan of Mark. Have recently listened to MEHLIANA, HEERNT & DONNY MCCASLIN'S "FAST FUTURE" and agree with those who say Mark is the best drummer in the world right now! He is Phenomenal!
John Kaufmann Huge call. He is good but not that good, unique and original but far from the best
Make sure you also check out Donny McCaslin's "Casting For Gravity" record. Same band and, in my opinion, better tunes.
A lot of unison approach! Very cool!
I really hear the Tony Williams in this.
Superb...
spectacular
Анатомия размеров в полном творческом подчиннии, фантастика. Однозначно интереснеший барабанщик совремнности
It like he's constantly checking to see if the kit still works and letting it rip for a bit once he realises it does.
It sounds like someone took Roy Haynes and put him through a computer.
That is some subtle stuff. I like it
The morse code language of drumming.. Incredible..
he make love the drum like beatiful womam, so deep. teell story. it no drum. it art. i art to so i no what he do. no every people understand the comlexitys of he drumming. i do
Soundtrip...
Amazing! Like Steve Reich!
Klanje na max, kužiš. Nema dalje. Alien shit.
Genius
Did anyone get into a Christmas mood @7:12? xD
Once you've taken ownership of being a creative artist.. nobody can take away anything from the unique world you live in.. check out Elvin Jones and Bill Stewart too
yeah, this is precisely where drumming peaked
Fresh
I aspire to be this entire solo.
I want to see Henry Cole and Mark Guiliana do a jam/duet. Wouldn't that be great?
Nice
6:03 tho 🤘🏼🤘🏼
+Nick Anocibar scares the bloke with the white hair sitting between the cymbals. brilliant
sounded like a gunshot!
need a running commentary by Mark Giuliana himself, for this
Muito Bom.
I think what is important is what Mark doesn’t play
music!
OMG
holy fuck, man, that kick patterns.
damn son!!!
And Sabian is releasing these cymbals when?
Jonathan Ziegler they're out now lol
Is this composition in 7/4???
nice solo
Anyone know the cymbals he is using? I see they're Sabian, would love some more information on them. They sound incredible.
He uses several different series of Sabian cymbals, but if i'm not mistaken, these are the Artisan series..
Thanks!
There is a Guitar Center video of him explaining exactly what he is currently using in these contexts :)
to add to rhythmista's answer, the hats are a modified version of the artisan 14' hats, where the bottom is a normal artisan top and the top is a bit thinner than normal. This makes for very light hats, which Mark said he prefers. The ride is a prototype 23' artisan ride that he found on a shelf at the sabian factory, AFAIK it's one of a kind but you can get a 22' version of it. I don't know much about the left ride but he's said that it's another one-off he found in the sabian factory.
whats kit is that? renown maple maybe?
anyone know what cymbals he was playing here?
Is that was the sound men day of!????
who is that playing at the end
How are these ppl not clapping in between wtf this dude is a mad scientist
A meditation.
это первоапрельский концерт?
It’s so obvious he had something great playing in his head while the audience seems confused at first.
This is a good challenge for the recording engineer, as Giuliana is using the full dynamic range of the 4-piece Gretsch® kit with Evans®/D'Addario® Level360 heads (I plan on re-heading my Tama®/Hoshino® IS52KC in the expansion process with Onyx batters and Genera Resonants on toms, Marching Hybrid S batter and Hybrid 1 reso on snare, and EMAD Heavyweight kick batter) and 4-piece Sabian® cymbal outfit. (Remo® is subcontractor for the Tama® BH22B resonant, which is based on the ES-1022-00 Ambassador Bass.)
Who cares? Wrong focus. Focus on the music, the player.
+B. C. Schmerker What a boring observation
reminds me of Paul Motian alot
+Louis Carrillo Or Jon Christensen...
Right on....like impressionism....contour melody lines on the drums....I'm glad he can do it for straight eigth musics or at least that interpretation on the triplet double time stuff....check out Johnny Vidacovich from New Orleans....he's right in there
+Louis Carrillo A lot of Brian Blade in there too.
This is one of those videos you just wish UA-cam would let you give a 100 likes LOL
Mmmmm!!
Wait a minute ... isnt that initial knocking sound emanating from an unbalanced camera stand off to his left? And the rocking of it on an imbalanced fulcrum the basis for what occurs next? Or am I being wacko to think that?
OK. Just watched it again.
It certainly seems that Guliana is incorporating the kinetic energy in 'rocking' the stand as a catalyst for the figures he starts to play, and that he is using the stand itself as a percussive element, and the most likely accidental rocking that occurred as a serendipitous part of his composition.
drums speaking attitude
What cymbals are these, I need to know!!!
custom sabians. check out the artisan light ride, the artisan elite, and maybe some hh stuff. add some rivets. that'll be the closest you can get without getting customs/prototypes
If my anxiety could play...
That control tho
Definitely on the spectrum
Does any one knows what is that left ride cymbal?
definetly has a sizzle. probably light artisan. if not, then a prototype
this dude is out of this world. like if Tony willams and vinnie had a child
Ari Hoenig
