- In this VladTV exclusive, two-time World Series champion and former MVP Jose Canseco sat down for an interview detailing his life and career. The retired baseball player revealed that he wasn't a standout high school player and received no college offers, prompting him to join the minor leagues for a $10,000 signing bonus. After struggling his first few years in the minors, the turning point came when he started using performing-enhancing drugs after promising his mom on her deathbed that he'd become the best player in the world.
After becoming the minor league's Player of the Year, he described winning the Rookie of the Year and American League MVP as a member of the Oakland Athletics. While describing his three consecutive World Series appearances, he also cleared the air on his multiple legal incidents as well as his interactions with Madonna and Alex Rodriguez. He also explained how two multimillion divorces and bad investments left him broke after signing the biggest contract in MLB history at the time. I wrote a letter to Jose in 1989 with a baseball card in it. He signed it and sent it back. Canseco was my favorite player at the time. It really meant alot to me. Thank you Jose.

Kinda thought it was shifty what he did with the steroid telling thing, but I am glad I read this. Sometimes it's easy to judge celebrities, but they are just people like me who become superstars and rich as a kid. I forget to look at my self and realize what kind of a dick I would of been if I was in that situation. I met Jose playing pick up water volleyball games at a hotel in Hawaii, back in the early 90s. He had recently been chosen MVP. I think he was with his first wife. He made it fun, while playing to win just as he did in baseball. I was on his team and he was encouraging and funny, and made you feel like you were a real part of a team. He was never an elitist. He was real. Jose, you are the best. Thank you for being you.

love him or hate him...he came out and told the truth about his use... and his story NEVER changes.
I'm a major reader. I study health, and for one, I always want to do what's good for me and my human body, both short term and long term. One of the studies has been that of anabolic steroids. " They are bad for you, ...and they will kill you!" I'm 72 years old now. Some super famous bodybuilders and actors have taken lots of steroids, or pde's, whatever we want to call them. The idea is to take ANYTHING that you put into your human body as a MED. As in a Minimum EFfective Dose, and not 10x as much, not 50x as much, but not twice as much either! THAT is what goes Against your body, your health, and your life.

You must have a different definition of radical honesty. He consistently minimized and twisted the facts when it came to assaulting women, gun charges, arrests, etc. Of course none of that was his fault
I followed him for most of his career. I have seven autographed jerseys and hundreds of baseball cards. Still my favorite player after all these years. He’s a very humble and nice guy. I wish him luck and all he does moving forward.

I'm guessing this is the only interview you have seen him do, because if it wasn't you would realize he has a different answer to the same questions each time.
I was thinking the same thing. But its a long shot. He has to make it known he would like to do it. ESPN could use him as a baseball analyst cause his knowledge of the game is phenomenal.
He's never done anything wrong and all those criminal charges were mistakes to hear him tell it. He's a narcissist personality and admitting wrong just isn't part of their MO. If he does make an admission it's always with a caveat.
I totally agree. This man is a great speaker and is genuine. Maybe THAT's why he's not on TV, come to think about it. He has dignity and truthfulness going for him.
Jose is an awesome person in general. He's not a liar, raised a beautiful daughter, and won MLB Awards, Championships & accolades like him or not. He's a very likable Person, and as good as he was in baseball, I'm sure his mom is looking down on him smiling on the man he become. I remember being young and baseball was everything in the world to me. But he realizes there's much more to life than that. I truley admire Jose the man and baseball player.
And I really admire him for admitting that he should never be in the hall of fame because his numbers don't qualify him! That was a gutsy thing to say! Most retired MLB players at his caliber would never make such admission!!

I noticed MLB players usually don't think much of their HS careers because they get surrounded by teammates who also wreck HS baseball. Plus he was drafted waaay late and rarely those players do anything.

Great interview - Its always nice when the interviewer allows the guest to speak and not interrupt them or cut them off their train of thought - that's probably one of the hardest qualities of a good interviewer - just allow them to speak...

I meet Jose many years ago at the Palms in Las Vegas. I saw him allot while I was there. So many fans ask him to sign stuff and take a photo with him. I have to tell you he was the nicest guy to these fans. He would spend time talking and payed attention to what they said. He is a genuinely nice guy. He is a true Champion.
That is nice to hear because my brother and I went to get his autograph in 96 when he was with the Red Sox. That day there were mostly young kids with their Dads. I was so disappointed. He never looked up, never said hello, or smiled at the kids, just kept signing. I was shocked. I took it as arrogance and really turned me off. Now, to hear him say he was shy and quiet is hard to believe, but he does seem different. More personable. Glad to hear nice things about him. He seems very humble now.

When I lived and worked near Miami back in the day, all of the Cuban guys used to tell me what an arrogant a-hole he was. Said he would pull up in his fancy car or boat, and had no problem trying to take their girlfriend or even wife away. Said he would run his mouth and start fights in clubs then have his bodyguards handle it. I get it that, to have all of the money and fame thrown at you when you’re young, it can go to your head. But it’s just sad to see these former players who had all of that money, have to pimp themselves out to do stupid “celebrity boxing “ or whatever, just to make ends meet now.

When he was on Oakland Athletics.he did a make a wish for my Son and 1 week before he was called to the team upstairs Oakland Athletics playing on the East Coast and flew back. After watching this I have a new found respect for this man. I always loved watching him play, got a little disenfranchised with the scandals, but listening to him coherently talk about his comings ups. I cherish him.

When I was 12 years old I had the biggest crush on Jose! I really remember that era by how I liked him. He is surprisingly honest in this interview. Amazing.

Tremendous interview...Jose is real af here. I vividly recall an article back in the summer of 1985 in either Sports Illustrated or Time magazine about Jose, what stood out was a paragraph highlighting his strength, and how he hit a home-run that knocked a plywood panel down over an outfield fence.

As a kid I collected baseball cards and Jose Canseco was a hero of mine. I have only went to one series of MLB games in Atlanta. Jose was on the Blue Jays and I got to see him hit one out. Pretty cool.

I have to say that I did not follow his career in the earlier years. I am just looking at him at this stage of his life. I can only imagine that it was not easy for him to admit that he failed along the way, but it looks like he is trying to make a mends.
