      I find any large pack will bounce when you run, there’s no way to counteract your body’s movements. The key is that the pack moves well with you.

    After a few longer runs including a 195km/16000m+ multiday adventure I'm still undecided on how to feel about this pack. This pack runs really big in my opinion. I have a M/L Adv Skin 12lt pack from a few year ago that fits me perfectly. With this pack (in size S/M) despite sinching it down to the max the fit is not 100% confortable. The water bottle pouches are better in comparison to my Adv Skin but the front pockets are disappointingly very small and not forgiving. The left clip near the hip belt attachment visible at 3:47 popped off on the first use because of poor stitching and I had to sew it back on (first time having quality control issues with Salomon products). After 8h on the trails the pack at almost full capacity (around 6-7kg) started being very heavy on my shoulders causing bruises which I believe is from the awkward fit. Love the WP main compartment and the posterior cangaroo pouch. I would love 2 mesh side pockets like on hiking pack to carry 2 extra water bottles instead of using a water bladder (failed on me several times). So in conclusion I believe the pack has a huge huge potential but comes a bit short on delivery.

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  4 роки тому +3

      That's good feedback! That stitching issue sounds like something you may want to warranty, as it's pretty clearly a manufacturing defect. I agree that the pockets could be a little bigger on the front though, perhaps more like my old S-Lab Peak 20.

      I would be interested in a gear list aswell. How you manage the hydration side with this pack (only 2 soft flasks, water bladder etc.) would be nice to know. Rewatching the gear and reading on the Salomon webpage I'm not quite sure which loop is designated axe holder. A random of the posterior drawstrings?

      I recently found even more straps hidden away inside those little open pockets on the front. You can strap your poles vertically to the front of the pack with them instead of across your chest like I showed in the video.

  • @FuckAdds

    I got this exact same pack after scanning the market for long, and I agree that salomon nailed a groundgreaking gear. The waterproof might not sound as a necessity to many but for multi day outings the likelyhood of rain climbs up and putting everything in trashbags is far from convenient/reliable so it is real value that could hardly be found anywhere.
    I must add that this pack compresses extremely well thanks to the lacing so that it works fine at 10L. It is also perfect for "grocery training" that is training with grocery resupply along the way ;) or running to work...
    An important point on this bag is the price that remains affordable compared to the Peak model !
    Initially I bought it for solo unsuported multiday outings but I found myself reducing the package down to a point where my 12L packs proved enough. That was on a 96h mission around the Ecrins with alpine bonuses over the GR. The reason is that I had no sleeping bag just a puffy and space blancket bivibag with a klymit matress for nights of 3 4h in valley bottoms.
    BUT this pack will be perfect for my 2022 project that is "Duo Des Cimes" on Echapée Belle across Belledonne (120km, 11kD+) along a special course that implies lots of off trail, alpine terrain, snowfield and ridges with only 6 refuges for food refill. For that we are required to carry a helmet, a harness, proper via ferrata "longe" and alpine style crampons...
    All that gear seems excessive to me but that's the French State approach to safety.
    Needless to say that even with lightest gear it makes this bag a necessity for its comfy back and volume.
    Loïc From France, quite a fan of your channel.

    Fantastic review . The sizing is very generous . I’m not a slim build and
    M/L is possibly too large . In comparison I need XL for the Salomon advance skin 12 . I’m keeping it though for any unforeseen fluctuations in weight and also for any other layers I may use . The pack feels great and fits around the body just as good as the advanced skin running vests . Can’t wait to use it .

    Thanks for the review - It's been hard to find much info on the pack. Looks like I'll be needing a medium based on the video. I bought two of the 35L packs S/M & M/L to test out & returned both, because the fit on the hip belt was huge. Looks like salomon made a good pack, but the sizing is way to big for the average runner. At a 32" waist i couldn't even get the hip belt tight 35L

      I haven’t tried a bladder yet myself in this pack, but there appears to be a hole in the bottom which I’d imagine is designed for the hose. There’s at least one loop on the front that must be designed to hold the hose in place near the sternum.

    • @TheRunningArtistBruceKatlin
      @TheRunningArtistBruceKatlin 3 роки тому

      @@JeffPelletier Thanks Jeff. The hole at the bottom of the bag is for reservoir leaks/overflow. I've contacted Salomon. This is a major design flaw, as the tube and suck valve have to hand upside down when treading it through the top of the bag.

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  3 роки тому

      @@TheRunningArtistBruceKatlin ah you're right. Just tested it out, and it looks like the hose is meant to run up and over your shoulder and through the one loop near the sternum. This is similar to the way most larger packs are designed, so perhaps it's a factor of size. My girlfriend's Ultimate Direction 30L is the same.

I unfortunately need a bear canister where I am (not a ursack) and I found a really small one, but it still takes up space.
      Other than that, funny enough, we have almost exactly the same gear. I have a Summerlite, a comparable bad from Nemo, Toaks pot, pocket rocket, same jackets, base layers, water filters. The difference may just be the bear canister.

    Just ordered this backpack as my 12 litre running vest is really pushing it when having to carry extra stuff like a harness and via ferrata gear etc. With the new corona rules on mountain huts and having to carry more stuff for overnight stays this seems to be the perfect size. Interesting that you're having issues with the sizing too. I also went for the larger one (like my running vest) but wasn't quite happy with it. Waiting for the smaller one to arrive now. Let's see... I'm not 100% sure yet I like the closing mechanism of the roll top yet compared to a traditional roll top...

    Nice review Jeff. I'm looking at options for a new pack sometime in the near future. I recently took my Osprey Talon 33 on a fastpacking trip in Wales (UK) which I filmed for my UA-cam channel. Not a bad pack but wouldn't mind something with running in mind. However, with my current gear I think 25l is a little small. As I upgrade my kit and get smaller and lighter gear, maybe something like this will be the way to go. However, I do also want to think about the possibility that my camera equipment may start to take up more room as I have really been enjoying learning the how to film outdoor adventure videos.

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Peter. The Osprey packs seem to be pretty standard for many ultra-light hikers, but they're definitely not designed for running as you say. I hear you about the size of 25L being a tight fit - it's so hard to find that balance between weight, volume, comfort and price.

Would this work well for this 3rd purpose or would something like the xa 15 work better? I currently have the UD15 but am not sold on the load feel. @FuckAdds 2 роки тому +2

      I have used this bag with a bit of alpine gear and it works up to some point :
      -helmet is best on the head, avoid bouncing and increase safety In my opinion
      -Iceaxe sits fine if short (45cm) otherwis the vest carry makes it peak in the back of your head.
      -The rope It is ok thank to the top buckle (but it blocks acces to main volume like most babs).
      - climbing gear can clip on side fitting straps that are regular 20mm so really solid, a pain if you run...
      - harness can be kept on the body if light and comfy
      My concern would be about the fabric that is far from the thick ones used in alpinism bags, this might lead to some repair...

    Is there a setup for bladder? If so, is it a separate pocket inside the main pack and what size (1 or L)? Thanks

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  3 роки тому +1

      There is. It's a separate pocket in-between the main pack and the back panel. I'm assuming it would fit Salomon's standard 1.5L bladder just fine, although I've yet to test it. I'm not a fan of using a bladder myself.

    • @hoosierdaddy70
      @hoosierdaddy70 3 роки тому +1

      Jeff Pelletier I get dehydrated very easy - heavy salty sweater. Usually need 3L on a long outing 4-5 hours. I live in desert so no options for filling up on m runs.

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  3 роки тому +1

      Ah, yea the desert is a different ballgame. You could probably do 1.5L in the back along with 1L in the front two flasks, and possibly even a third flask secured along the top of the pack.
      Just note that the pack only comes with two flasks and not the bladder.

    • @jpk91
      @jpk91 3 роки тому +1

      I tested it with a 1.5lt bladder. It works fine if the pack is not fully loaded. With a fully loaded pack taking out, refilling the bladder and putting it back in is a real struggle because of the items in the main compartment pushing on the bladder pocket.

    • @bedp
      @bedp 3 роки тому +1

      @@hoosierdaddy70 As a fellow sweaty desert-dweller I'm happy to say that the pack easily accommodates my 3l reservoir. It's extremely comfortable with 1l in the front water bottles and 1.5 l in the reservoir but I tried it with the full 3l in the reservoir and it's still very doable, though not the most comfortable thing. I will say that I got a M/L despite being 5'8 and I think the extra space helps the fit with a full bladder. The only downside is that the backsweat is insane. Not sure if it's just part and parcel to vest-style packs as this is my first or if it's this pack in particular. It's actually to a point where I'm needing to consumer more water for the same amount of effort so I haven't decided yet if I should keep it.

      I’ve found that any pack with a large load will want to move. The key is that it moves with you and doesn’t cause any problems. There’s simply no way to carry 15-18 pounds of gear and not have it want to move up and down as you run, the physics don’t allow for anything else.

    • @tomylee
      @tomylee 2 роки тому +1

      @@JeffPelletier I agree, there is always some movement. I think the connection of the pack to the front is missing. It is only connected at the back. If I attached 1p tent and pad to the sides, I think I shoud be fine fitting into 25 L, also its will probbaly be looking as a ball :) I would normally take my osprey exos 38, but it will be overkill for 4kg of load probably. Jeff, fantastic video as always! I wanted to ask 2 questions. 1. Would you consider making a video about HOW you pack your kit into the bag in terms of accessibility, balance, etc. kind of merging your kit video with the pack video. 2. Regarding your comments on the XA 35… I’m finding that my base weight is quite low, but my volume is high. For instance, I just can’t sleep in a bivy, but my tent weighs less than your bivy (but takes up a lot more space). Would you consider the 35 a good solution? Thanks!

    Je ne suis absolument pas d'accord avec votre avis. Après des centaines d'heures d'utilisation de ce sac à dos je lui mettrais un 3/10. +1 pour son étanchéité, +2 pour son système de serrage à la poitrine qui m'a permis de rajouter un compartiment nourriture. Pour le reste ce sac est très mauvais. 1- Défaut principal 1 : le manque de VRAI rangement pour nourriture et autres. Les poches devant sont visuellement stylées, mais avec une flasque remplie, dans la réalité tu ne mets pas grand chose. C'est une honte : c'est impossible que les concepteurs n'aient pas pu s'en apercevoir en testant ne serait-ce qu'une seule fois. C'est un énorme souci pour un sac avec lequel on est sensé être en réelle autonomie. 2- Défaut principal 2 : tu n'as pas la possibilité de mettre un coupe-vent à portée de main ou autres habits techniques. La poche derrière est inacessible quand le sac est sur le dos. Ainsi, tu dois forcément enlever le sac, prendre ton coupe vent et replacer ton sac à dos. A la longue c'est pénible. Au final ce sac à dos ne permet pas une fluidité dans tes actions : soit tu trail, soit tu t'arrêtes pour prendre un truc dans ton sac à dos. Défauts secondaires en grand nombre : remettre des nouvelles flasques oblige souvent à enlever les barres de céréales et autres que tu as mis devant.En effet a flasque ne glisse pas bien. A la longue c'est pénible. Les flasques s'effrondrent dans leur poche malgré le système de fixation dédié. L'ajustement du sac à dos n'est pas assez précis : la ceinture devant n'est clairement pas suffisante pour ajuster parfaitement le sac et notamment au niveau des épaules. Il manque clairement des poches pourtant facilement rajoutable au niveau des côtes basses. En bref ce sac à dos c'est de la daube.
