Galaxy S22 Ultra Vs Pro Camera - Portrait Mode!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was just released and I decided to pick one up because I wanted to test the best portrait mode in a phone and compare it to a Pro Mirrorless Camera. What do you think? Would you ditch your camera for this??

Crazy how well a smartphone camera performs in the hands of the right person who knows lighting, framing, and exposure!
The portrait mode on this phone is insane man. I never once was like “meh this looks kindda fake. It was usually spot on. The only give away (with all phones) is foreground blur. They don’t know what to do with it
@@LeeZavitz gotta get bigger sensors. Did you notice the natural bokeh on the front facing camera? It's actually quite fantastic.
agree
Is there some accessible material on how to learn some fundamentals for lighting/framing/exposure? I have a background in art, but not photo medium. Looking to start exploring photography with this phone
even my HUAWEI P20 pro from2018 Have better Zoom Quality Than apple 13 pro max 2021.
Let me quote that famous line again, "It's not the ride, it's the rider". But damn, that's impressive Samsung.
I believe that if the Expert Raw app is used on the S22 Ultra, The S22 Ultra will show its teeth.
Definitely. Its not abt the ride its abt the rider. But Samsung has become more consistent in their portrait mode and the cut outs are scintillating. we live in a galaxy like that.
AI stereo depth mapping is something else, even before the AI depths sensor the s21 was pretty badass with portraits and general fotografy
Whats up guys Sal here
Peace out
Most S22 comparisons with other phones are showing the iPhone is slightly better at video but this is something else. I have not seen anyone else compare the S22 with a pro camera, with a well-lit, slow moving subject in the hands of a real photographer. Impressive pictures, sir!
I am a step closer to ordering this camera, with a built-in phone.
I have noticed that. Iphone is always better in taking videos and I do not understand what is wrong with samsung. However, in taking photos, it always seems Samsung and pixel are top.
@@DarkSiderSS0 Androids are terrible generally for videos, except maybe Vivo flagships.
@@MothersMilk-1 ehh terrible is pushing it and you know it. They are good for the average person but not great like iPhone. I shoot all my YT videos with Samsung phones and no issues.
@@MothersMilk-1 well if its terrible then iphone is atleast bad.cuz iphone is still better but you start having to be nit picking nowadays
I've even heard the camera system is equipped with 5G.
I know the Sony camera is objectively better - when you zoom in you'd see a lot more detail and all that, but a lot of times I find myself liking the look of the Galaxy's portraits more! So cool how phones can do this these days.
At this point I don't know why we even call them phones, probably one of the less used capabilities
To be honest, The pro camera is better, it is beyond question, but he way Samsung advanced, wow, i am amazed that a phone can get this good to begin with.
Khuann
I think the lack of details is better for normal people - not everyone has perfect skin ;)
@@zzzzzzzzz_zin Well, If you have used a Sony Alpha, you know it's nothing like that. The pictures are detailed but smooth and creamy..
But yeah S22Ultra is arguably the best for a smartphone camera..
I have used the S22 Ultra in low light and it's amazing but i am in awe at how the photos look soooooo good in this lighting! WOW
Robin - amazing? Do you also have normal camera to compare? :) then you will see the real difference. And try PRO mode and shoot in RAW with S22. You can edit photos in free version of Adobe Lightroom. That is when you can get maximum from your phone.
@@jzphoto hello JZ ! Do you know samsung eneable raw tô portrait Mode on 22 ultra?
I'm a working pro photographer and just got my S22 Ultra. It's incredibly impressive. Obviously the pro gear is much more flexible and S22 only really works for social/small res work as it falls apart once blown up but I fully intend on supplementing my work with S22 shots at times, also using it as a C-cam/timelapse cam for video work. Will really up the BTS shot game for a lot of pros too!
Interesting. I’ve seen other comparisons between iPhone and S22, and the Samsung usually has a lot more detail when cropping in. I suppose the 108mp main camera holds up much better when blown up than the 10mp zoom cameras. So I’m guessing you don’t really benefit when shooting portraits unless you shoot wide portraits with the main 108mp lens? Thanks
@@kristiangurholt59 I know it's a bit of an outdated comparison, but I have an S20 ultra which also has a 108mp sensor (wouldn't surprise me if it was the same sensor), and it just doesn't look as sharp as my Nikon D5300, which is a 9 year old camera at this point. 108mp mode especially is RIDICULOUSLY grainy, even in full daytime.
@@NukeMyHouse thanks for the input! It’s difficult to judge camera performance unless your holding the phone in your hands, as there are very conflicting reviews by users to be found on the web. Same goes for iPhone. Mrwhosetheboss’s comparison between the two show much better zooming capabilities with the Samsung, maintaining detail lost with the iPhone. However, the thing that would really bring a phones camera closer to that of “real cameras” would imo be using those pixels to allow for cropping or the use of bigger formats while still preserving detail. I suppose this is where tiny phone-lenses and sensors have technical limitations as to how small/many pixels they allow for before the image gets too noisy, like you said. Personally, one workaround I’ve found is to use really slow shutter speeds. With this I’m able to get virtually noise-free pictures with my iPhone. Unless motion blur is something you’re looking for, this only works with static objects mind you.
do you work on raws? i dont know should i choose Pro I or s22 ultra
@@wolandphotography the computational processing is so good I usually just shoot the JPG and edit it. The RAWs on the expert camera do have a lot of latitude tho and are quite editable
Finally a review without comments on each photo and just side by side comparison! We don't all see the images the same so when reviewers are commenting it bothers me so much! Plus, I love how you made your video with your thoughts WHILE you're shooting! So cool love it 😍
6:18 spoken like an Apple fan boy/girl. Actually it's the other way around, Samsung comes out with innovative technology and Apple just copies them. When Apple fold comes out and the next Samsung fold comes out after are you gonna say because Samsung came out after Apple that they can tweak stuff?
well said
Wherever samsung cant compete with apple in software departmant they compansate with their hardware(bigger better sensors, screen, microphones, cooling etc). Effort is amazing and it pays off most of the time, thanks to sensor staggered hdr really works in video.
The refusal to accept that the S22 is better is hilarious!
For real bro, my least fav part of the vid hearing that
They did more than just ‘tweak’ what apple did though, the role of ai is very minimal in iPhones, meanwhile in Samsung did a completely different approach. In benchmarks, sdgen1 can do up to 4x the ai image processing compared to an apple a15, and Samsung took advantage of that
Samsung has done an excellent job!!!
Awesome content as always
5:46 look at the sky. Samsung is beast bro 👍❤
Yow this is different from the other comparison. You maxed out the full potential of the S22 ultra camera system. Salute to you sir
He only used portrait mode. There's better options on the S22 Ultra. Pro mode or Photo and now Pro mode for Video. He was just using what most people will use, that's quick and easy. And Apple and Samsung knock it out of the park.
Great comparison! HDR and the overall SOOC result is really what sold me to completely switch from a dedicated cam to a phone cam. Don't have the luxury of time anymore to do lots of post processing specially if you already have kids.
Same here. As an amauter photografer was thinking about update my 12years camera and buy sony a6400, but run into this video and it made me really to think about
It's crazy how good smarthphone cameras have gotten, 10 years ago no one would think this was possible...
Samsung’s camera is on a different level 🔥
Oh my! Galaxy S22 Ultra Camera is a Win in smartphone world! Amazing how it become and willing to improve more!
You make taking great photos look so effortless and you have great banter with the models. Watching that helps me not stress so much when I'm out at shoots. Have you ever thought about making a video giving tips how you approach posing models and what you're thinking before you take a photo?
Sounds like the guy behind the camera is mad. But I’m really impressed with the s22u, I preferred the overall photos from it (especially for it being a point and shoot). Also great shots!
guy behind the camera doesnt realize the s21 ultra from last year competes with the iPhone 13 pm that came out a full 8 months later
@@EtechnoTechno right! My thoughts exactly. Heck, the s21U still competes with phones from even 2022, that’s how good it is.
People always focus on what Samsung does wrong, instead of what It does right. Samsung were never bad phones to begin with, it’s software optimization is debatable, but there’s progress being made there. But otherwise, Samsung offers top tier phones
The only people who say Samsung was ever bad to begin with, were diehard apple fans who had too much pride. Even here, I’d see comments of how ‘apple could have done better’ and it’s honestly really sad lol
He sounded so salty lol
He's an idiot. You could say it the other way and say Apple changed stuff based on Samsung's previous model.
Thank you Lee, great content, Samsung has really made their portrait mode so close to this expensive and bulky camera.
Now they need to improve video where camera's are still much better, samsung should improve and make a better cinematic mode than apple for video.
Samsung should offer the option to customize the bit rate and compression of the videos it records
The look of the pictures on Galaxy s22 is more autentic in comparison to Apple iphone
People say otherwise because in camera comparisons, they often never bother with the settings (which are too processed and fake looking on default for freighter colors), and for those that won’t use Samsungs, they never know what its actually capable of. otherwise, if you know how to tinker with its settings, they can be very out standing
@@baka3262 YES YES YES YES!!!!!
W😮W! That was a masterclass in Smartphone photography! Thank you! Could you do another video using the Manual / Pro functionality of the S22 Ultra? That would be awesome as no reviewer will touch on this subject matter. Best wishes!
No matter what item you use to capture images they turn out amazing. The tool is for sure less important than the operator. I liked the Samsung images more, mainly due to the extra dynamic range. I hope that we one day will have built-in seamless HDR as an option in large sensor cameras.
Lee, I have a creative challenge for you. Use a 10-year-old point and shoot in a portrait situation, would be interesting to see what you can achieve!
"They came out 6 months after Apple came out" I mean the iPhone came out in September and the S22 line cane in February. The S22 is a lot closer to the iPhone 13 than it is to the iPhone 14 otherwise, what iPhone do you compare it to? I think they both do well.
Exactly
Meh! iphone sucks a**
This is the way apple fan boys Express their anger when the lose in an area of competition
exactly, that statement is lame. even comparing iPhone13 Pro with S21Ultra, S21 still win tho except for video which iPhone always does better job.
the only massive different for S21 and S22 is edge detection.
in time iPhone 14 came out, S22 already got a several update for camera improvement, like S21 did.
Finally someone that can do math
Nice to see how far phone cameras have come, but commenting Apple came out 5 months before is a bad excuse Apple could always update the processing but they ddon't. Cool video
yah coming from a model that knows nothing about photography.. I caught that too and laughed. she is totally clueless...
Your first Video I'm seeing and it earns my subscription.
The ultra looks better 😳
"Wait, that's illegal"
It adds warmth to the pictures 😍
Pro shooter here (two a7iii, one a7Riv, with far too many lenses). I'm heading on my first cruise in two weeks and have been debating which camera and what lenses to bring - all the while thinking I should just leave it all at home and focus on having a good time instead. (but hey, am I really being "me" if I'm not taking pictures?!?) This video has me thinking that maybe I do just leave the pro cameras home, take my S22 Ultra and use it for the few shots I want here and there and focus the rest of my time on having fun. Thank you for sharing!
I am a pro shooter as well. I would just use the smartphone. Cruises are not the ideal vacation for taking a professional camera. Enjoy your vacation!
I'd argue many of the shots looked better from the s22 ultra. Sure it can't get everything right but what it does it really does.
I just upgraded from a s20 ultra and I'm shocked at the improvements over the past 2 years.
Glad to read that, because I'm considering to upgrade my s20 ultra to the 22.
S20 ultra was a megapixel bump.. and that's it.. note 10 was better.. then samsung did improve s20 ultra shortcomings and s21 ultra was a great improvement and good upgrade overall
Up against a Pro Camera and the S22 can hold its own!??! Maybe I don't mind, as much, spending $1,200 on the phone anymore.
worth it does take great pics and u can do more with it.
Also new hm3 sensor has improved staggered hdr so videos has iphone 12 pro level dynamic range(iphone 13 handles highlights better than both)
I can't imagine attaching a flash to a smartphone and bouncing light around at parties, though.
I just ordered the S22 Ultra (I know, I'm late to the party), and I shoot DSLR as well. I've always said that a cell phone will never be able to replace a dedicated camera. Photography is a physical property of light and there's no way to physically reproduce that in a cell phone. Even though the effects of the phone are AI, they look incredible, and considering it's the device you're more likely to have on hand at any given moment. That said, it still takes the skill of an artist to understand the lighting and framing as you have shown in this shoot. Very impressive of the phone, more impressive of you as a photographer.
late to the party? the phone just came out lol
@@BismarckCore Three weeks before I got one. That's like 14 years in technology gibberish. BTW, it's incredible!
What you say is very true, years ago my PRO cameras became just work tools (weddings). Our cell phones accompany us everywhere and do their job very well, this year I stopped being a fan of Samsung after many years and the photos of my ex Samsung Galaxy S21 ULTRA vs my current Google Pixel 6 PRO do not withstand the test of see them 1/1 scale. Samsung has a destructive algorithm. Google respects the detail. I bought my google 3 months after I bought my Samsung. Guess who's for sale now?... 😉
Amazing what a phone can achieve these days. Great video!
Thanks for the comparison. Phone cameras are running head to head with "pro" cameras. Sometimes it's difficult to decide to bring my mirrorless camera and it's accessories such as extra lenses, batteries and chargers. I do love to use my mirrorless when traveling but convenience wise the phone is unmatched.
Fr fr
When traveling I only use my phone (Galaxy S22) to take pics, but for professional works like taking pics or making videos for a company I’m working for, I gotta use a pro camera. 10 years ago I would bring a camera with me whenever I went on a vocation but now with phone camera being much advanced I’m using a phone instead.
@6:18, I mean its been that way since the beginning, same way when the iPhone 14 comes out, it will be competing with the S22 Ultra. You test out the best from each company so by his logic, when the 14 pro max comes out it wouldn't matter because the S22 ultra would be 7 months old.
This is an amazing video. In the hand of a proper photographer (who had the good sense to lock the focus and dial down the exposure on S22U), S22U in several shots actually came out trumps over the Sony and that just BLOWS my mind. You should do a similar one where u use Expert RAW in S222U and run both the pics in Adobe LR on a Computer and then lets see what happens!!
That's just amazing. Can't wait to get mine to try out the Expert RAW app on the S22 Ultra. I'm curious to how the landscape photography will be with it.
This is amazing!.. The photos taken with this Samsung are incredibly good !
Good smartphone + really good photographer = wonderful photos 😂
Taking mental note to lower the exposure when taking photos with my S22 Ultra, this was awesome thanks!
Bro the edge detection on Galaxy is insane 😳
6:20 , they came out 6 month later so they can tweak stuff ? bro that's a weak statement from whoever behind the camera , if i want to make the same argument i can too " ip 14 promax came out also 6 month later after this S22 ultra so apple can tweak stuff to beat samsung " . see the point ? Oh and also you don't need the S22 ultra to beat the ip 13 promax in potrait S21 are doing this just as good as s22 ultra and that phone is 6 month before the 13 promax so ya :) . Also SAmsung recents year has been doing fantastic in Potrait photography they are consistent with the cut out and blur compare the Google pixel or iphone.
😂 At the off-camera person's comment. That's like every Apple fan's excuse 😂 🙄
When the iPhone 14 comes out, and the camera is improve, then one can say the same thing about Apple 🤦. What a dumb rationale 🙄
This comment should be pinned! 😄
Yeah, same as samsung S21 and iPhone 13 series
It's a joke, i guess
I used to shoot photography with Canon I am a s22 owner as well and this is probably the first video I've seen with another photographer showing this phone. all the videos you see online is iPhone iPhone there needs to be more Samsung video creators or creators using the Samsung phone with video and photography. this was really well done most of the pictures I liked the fact that you could see the side by side between a $3,000 camera basically and a phone. and I think the phone in some cases did a little better or they looked about the same but hands down to Samsung for competing with a professional camera. Samsung doesn't get the marketing love that Apple does but they make a hell of a camera. this was really well done I think you should do another shoot in a different location with a different model just for some perspective like maybe outdoors or maybe street photography or a boudoir shoot or fine art shoot
Watched the pixel 6 pro n damn this s22 ultra nailed it!!
Lee please do a portrait photo comparison between the S22 Ultra and Iphone 13 Pro Max on max settings
I have the S21fe and the portrait mode is really impressive too. Samsung doing a great job on this.
That Was Same Man I Hope This Phone goes Very Well And Samsung Also A Brand 🤗🤗🤗
Would have been dope if you attached a 50mm/85mm on the Galaxy on regular mode, but nevertheless awesome content as always! madd fiya
S22 ultra has a telephoto lens, you don't even need to add an additional lens to try this
@@youranonymous931 yes we know that but with those “portrait mode usually it’s assisted by computational photography, right? Main camera are usually the strongest gear
@@mrdamiansingh that is if you use portrait mode with main cam, then it uses computational photography. If you use telephoto lens, stand far from your subject, then you will get true portrait effect without computational photography
@@youranonymous931 ok bro bro whatever is clever! I don’t shoot professional work with cellphones anyways I just mention a “you should have” I couldn’t care less about this whole discussion but stay up and keep on it
@@youranonymous931 the sensor of the telephoto lens is nowhere near as good as the main lens. The telephoto in portrait mode is to give a tighter FoV overall, but the bokeh or blur is 100% AI or computational.
yes they came after 6 months but samsung supports pro mode in which you can adjust shutter speed and aperture which you cant in Apple
Amazing job and skills! I wish I could use the cameras on this phone to the full potential like you. ❤️ Amazing 🤩
6:19 don’t they have 1 apart from each generation of smartphones? The iphone 13 came out a year later after the 12 same thing for Samsung. The galaxy 22 came out one year after the 21.
This has to be the best camera review video I have ever seen!! 🔥🔥 I now love my s22 ultra so much more thanks to this 🙌 ❤️ I really am shocked at how well this phone snaps portrait sho😳😳
is it good for selphies?
@@marwafessya7774 more than good.
Thanks for the side-by-side comparison. It really gives evidence that the quality of work we do is not just having a great camera. Especially since many of the newer smartphones produce comparable results to mid-range pro cameras. The untrained eye of an everyday consumer would not be able to pick up the difference. Great work here by the way! I may try one of these tests myself in my old-time photo studio.
The portrait mode is crazy!! my main interest in the S22 Ultra's camera is for taking selfies and pictures of me and my friends, so I appreciate being able to really see what it's capable. Were there any presets or special settings that you did or was it really just point-and-click? :O
Its just point and click. Just set your cam to portrait mode and choose the blur filter
4:17 oooh ........ My gosh what the hell . It's awesome .s22 power
Great video but I would love to watch a video comparison of Samsung’s expert raw (and how it edits) compared to Apple ProRAW (and how it edits) I think that it would be berry interesting to see a comparison of these computationally enhanced raw files.
Check out jonathan casey ? I think he did a Samsung RAW vs Apple ProRes video. Samsung takes it up a notch by using RAW which keeps a lot more data than ProRes. Also apparent in the file size, samsung RAW was 5GB in 15 seconds
Gggtyt
@@therainbowpoopp I’m referring to the pictures, ProRes and ProRaw are different, still thank you for the suggestion, thankfully he just uploaded a comparison today.

The camera of s22 ultra is just mindblowing💥💥
@6:15 "yes 6 months after Apple came out" newsflash. They both come out 6 months after each other. Guess what the iPhone 14 will come out 6 months after the s22 and the s23 still come out 6 months after the iPhone 14 so that's a weak argument
It would be nice to see how the s22 ultra performs in other environments(outdoor)where it's more challenging.
Performs even more amazing outdoor
Dude this was amazing! I didn't think the Samsung would hold up. Could you do this again with the S23 Ultra? And maybe do portrait video? A camera vs S23 Ultra vs Iphone 14 Pro would be an incredible video
I am impressed by Samsung s22
Super 😍🔥
Very well made comparison. Thank you!
Always Samsung has the best camera
The iphone14 will come put six months after the s22 ultra hot released and yet it will be compared with the s22 ultra. No one should use difference in launch as an excuse anymore. It's childish
As with most camera comparison videos on UA-cam, they didn't show close ups of the images at 100%, which is the only way to compare the amount of noise introduced by the cameras sensors. Without that, the comparison is incomplete. The closest detail this video showed was the hair to show off the Samsung feature for capturing hair detail.
Great pics! It would've been a joke just a few years ago if someone suggested comparing the image quality of a smartphone to a pro digital camera, but smartphones, especially Samsung, have come a long way. The S22 is all the camera the average person would need; buying digital cameras is now mainly for photography pros/amateurs/enthusiasts.
At 5:47 you can see sony's BIGGEST problem. Look at the skylight. Notice how the S22 Ultra preserved more dynamic range in the sky, where sony was blown out. The a7iv is definitely more detailed, however has a horrible handle on dynamic range without bracketing. This is where Ai photography will revolutionize the way we see things. In fact, sony has a brand new Ultra Violet image sensor! This should, if paired with Ai change camera technology as we know it.
"has a horrible handle on dynamic range without bracketing". What? Bracketing is required for HDR on ANY camera. Smartphones have been doing this for a very long time. Without bracketing there is no HDR.
It’s not a problem. It’s just that it doesn’t do heavy hdr like phones do
Video: Samsung Galaxy s22 Ultra vs Pro camera.
Me: watching at 240p.
Damn, I'm so impressed how out of completely ordinary situations, someone with the right eye and experience can get photos that look so good.
You'd do better photos with a spoon than I will with the best equipment available. 🙃
Man ! how did u turned this location into an art ,, its amazing how u chose the poses with such a simple place ,,
regarding the s22 ultra , i honestly can't believe these photos are straight out of the phone and unedited .. they are stunning
S22U wins for me
1:37 look at the hand, it's mindblowing how S22 had done justice to the dynamic range! Even in that background wall, I still can't believe that the S22 captured darker areas as well as brighter areas, are both, better than the alpha.
S22ultra is awesome 👌
You should to a phone photo guide. I have subscribed.... Rarely do that after one video
5:57 suddenly the iPhone is better LOL
Nah
you can only tell a very slight difference if you look very closely but really need to zoom in and I kinda like the colors more on the samsung
SAMSUNG KILL IPHONE
Always
Holy moly love booth cameras. Insane how far cellphone cameras are. Great
Never had an iphone and never will
Brilliant video I would love a video on how you do the exposure and how you edited the photos on some
A Samsung smartphone and a Sony mirrorless camera, also my favourite team. Same goes for me together with my Sony A6000. The camera system on the S22 Ultra is indeed a true incredible piece of equipement. And i'm happy that Samsung now also has used Sony sensors same as Apple with the IPhone 13 series. This video shows that in the hands of the right persoon a S22 Ultra can easily match the quality of a point and sloot camera like for example the Sony RX-100 series or even maybe an entry level A6000 series mirroless camera. I've picked up my S22 Ultra yesterday and going to enjoy it to the max!
The edge detection of s22 ultra is just unparallel 🥵image few years now and when we get that enough computing power and we implement this level of edge detection in portrait video 😍
One of the biggest differences is the tint of the model's denim. Which one was closer to reality?
Wait wait did that voice really say cause it came out 6 months later?🤣🤣🤣 great video.💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

Got me looking at my Google Pixel 6 Pro a little strange.😂 Still keeping it though but this is undeniable that Samsung has something special here.
💜WOW! I’m sold!! Exactly what I’m looking for!
4:34 wow the dynamic range proc at S22 is awesome.. clearer sky and floor
I just got a Flip 4 and I thought my phone's camera was great, man the S22 Ultra is a beast on another level...It is truly astonishing to see how good phone cameras have become...this quality from a cell phone is unreal....
OMG!! That Galaxy Look Insane💥
These phones are getting insanely competent to handle WB in mixed lighting to keep the skin tones the right shade.
Nice! Don`t you forget this is pro camera or app "expert raw" you try this. My brother did doing photography test.
Bro, This is mental!
Really enjoyed watching my friend! 🔥🔥
This was an awesome comparison
Ooh boy S22U is a beast
Her Jeans looks green on the Sony. Is it the editing?
Same issue with the S21 ultra have to get the exposure down for better contrasty looking pictures.
Nice shots 👌
Same experiment noted on at the time of S7 edge released ❤
You are an apple fan(me too) and yet not biased....I like the honesty 🙌🏽
