Scene optimizer is a big part of what makes the normal camera app good in the first place IMHO, the shutter lag was never this huge issue that people make it out on the internet,
Hey it's the Maze Runner guy...no seriously you got very similar features to Dyllan O Brian. New to your chanel but loved your presentation and video work. I am mostly into mobile photography and it's very nice to see someone doing comparison to real photography. Awesome video man. Cheers
Hello Tom, To Begin with, i would like to thank you for the good video, and your time to tackle the details. Great work, kudos. I would like to address an issue you came out with about "shutter lag" somewhere around 6 min 52 sec. of the video. in my world, we have a saying, it is not a bug its a feature. I believe it describes the issue perfectly. The short story is simple: This issue is not a real bug or issue, this is caused by the nature of expert raw app and how it works. In short Expert RAW is trying to extract the most quality using mult raw photos, so it is only natural to have some delay in action, until it takes all of the multiple frames and make its binning processing to combine all of the frames, to get the best out for the final frame you are presented with. This delay is natural for a phone. I am not that familiar to get into details, but i believe the short version is the proper explanation which tackles the heart of the issue, and i believe it should give you enough clarity on topic and what is happening in the background and how and why this propagates as "Shutter lag" Thanks for the informative video Kind regards
Thanks so much for the considerate and thoughtful comment man! It definitely does make sense, though the thing that surprises me is that a lot of this processing seemingly happens before the shot is taken, and not after which is where I'd normally expect batch processing of HDR shots etc!
@@ItsTomRich Samsung is working to resolve inconsistent HDR issue, alongside other issues they have like unreasonable battery drain and failing GPS. i have no idea when the inconsistent HDR will be fixed and when a patch will be pushed to customers, but i believe it may reduce the overexposed effect and show some more detail on the photo as a result. Don't take this statement as absolute truth. take it with a pinch of salt. I am still researching the topic.
It doesn't make sense because Apple can do it without that shutter lag. Yeah, I understand that pixel binning and hdr raw would take time but apple does hdr without any problems. Pixel binning left, so for pixel binning, if samsung can do pretty fast in normal app, why wouldn't do with the same speed in the expert raw?
@@hasanagera It makes sense, because apple is doing single image raw without pixel binning. and because it is single raw without pixel binning, there is the no lag performance.
@@hasanagera Well its just stacking an unhealthy amount of images, i think like 8 to 15, it has nothing to do with batch hdr, or bracketing, or pixel binning, its just the laws of physics. You cant take 15 photos while each photo has a 1 second shutter speed in anything less than 15 seconds. The reason behind the huge amount of images being stacked is to control noise, samsungs 108 mp sensor has terrible iso performance, and it get unusable quickly anything above 400 iso, one can test that by taking a raw file from the normal camera app.
Remember the Nokia 9 Pureview? I think they had it right with a dedicated monochrome shooter, it added more light to the mix. Just ordered my S22U and am hoping to get great pictures with it. Thanks for these tips!
Just got back from some live show performance and I don't really get it but my colleague actually managed to capture better photos and videos on his Samsung s21 plus then me on my s22 ultra. Both of us are not photographers. Standard settings. His camera is just mind-blowing.... how is that possible??????????
5:58 - I find this especially the case with Samsung phones, I'm not a huge fan of their processing. For the best point and shoot, which phone would you pick? For me, purely on camera point on shoot, I'd still pick a Pixel, with the iPhone in second (Don't like how warm and yellow the iPhone makes most things) Great review again, I won't be upgrading from a Note 20 Ultra though
Thanks so much for watching Ryan! I actually think the Samsung is better if you're shooting in RAW, but otherwise for simple point and shoot I'd probably choose the iPhone. It's the most natural looking smartphone camera for me.
How do you concentrate on the content and composition without peripheral distraction - with no viewfinder ?. How do you manually focus in between two objects and use depth of field to bring then both into focus- or focus on the hyperfocal distance? How do you almost instantly reset color balance or any of the other adjustments without dedicated controls. How do you compare a rinky dink lens and sensor to a full frame or medium format sensor and real lenses. Why is it that 4k video from my toy P1000 Nikon look so much better than the even 7K from my S22? Let's face, you're trying to make a toy sound like a real camera. My s22 is great for many reasons, but quality photos ? .......sorry. Maybe someday. And my RAW handlers (both Photoshop and Affinity) give me photos that don't match the quality of a simple JPEG output from my D850 (not that I shoot JPEG format except for tests). I often print up to 40X60 inch high quality prints for clients - try that with any cellphone - good luck. And please, don't call it a professional device - not even close. Youtr insulting pro-photogaphers.... The S22 has its place. As do pro-cameras.
I found expert raw but could not find expert PRO raw? Any idea how to find the PRO version? When I tale a picture with the expert raw app it does not say it is taking multiple shots BTW.
Okay so. I wish you could have given us a link so we can download those raw files ourselves and see how they perform. About the shutter lag on the Expert Pro Raw App, most of the explanations here are either slightly wrong or completely wrong. The app is consistently stacking a large amount of images, I think upwards of 8 to 15 different exposures to create a final image, why ? Well simply because as it is currently, for some reason, The Samsung's camera is incredibly prone to luminance noise on anything above a 100 iso. I would encourage you to honestly compare different phones such as phones from Xiaomi, or google with the samsung at different iso levels and you would see that for some bizzare reason, the samsung's 108 megapickels sensor is incredibly noisy. I have tested other samsung phones with different sensors and they are alot better, but specifically the 108 megapixel sensor suffers the most. In general Samsung phones, even if using the same sensor are more noisy in raw files compared to other brands and i am not entirely sure why.
Love your work and your videos Tom, clear and simple for anyone to understand and I love it. Really hope you can help me with your opinion as I am looking for a new phone and I am completely confused between the Pixel 6 and the S22 Ultra. Both your videos are really good when they were compared with individually with pro cams and so I'm keen to hear your thoughts. Thanks and Take care! :)
Thanks so much for watching Shreyas! I think the Pixel 6 Pro would be a great fit for you if you want the zoom lens from the S22. Overall the pixel is my favourite android phone in a long time.
Very nice video mate. I'm still debating whether to get the s22 ultra or wait 6 months for iPhone 14. This video is definitely a strong case for the s22 ultra
The main, and very frustrating problem with the S22 is something that you only briefly touch on at 6:42 in your video: that is the problem with motion in low light situations using the standard camera app. This is very apparent when taking photos at a concert or night club where the images are consistently blurry and noisy and just basically unusable. I've tried every combination of settings, 50mp vs standard 3:4 etc. My wife's Pixel 3A has no such problems. It effortlessly takes sharp photos in night club settings where a performer my be moving somewhat. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this issue ?
Good video review, i think one of the best on UA-cam, lots of professional info here. One question tho. Do you have the Exynos version or the Snapdragon? thanks alot!
@@ItsTomRich So can we expect to see a different between the Snapdragon and Exynos versions in the photos and videos? From what I know SD generally has a better ISP but the latest Samsung A53 with Exynos 1280 has better image processing than the previous A52 with SD 778G maybe Samsung has done more work this time as these phones have the same sensors
Great review and samples. My only gripe with the S22 Ultra is the fact that there's no aperture control. If I want to take a landscape photo at F/11 I can't do that. They oddly took away the setting after the S10.
That is because there no actual aperture control in the S22 Ultra. It is fixed permanently at f/1.8 not only on S22U, but in almost all other phones. The Galaxy S9 and S10 had a feature called vari-aperture which meant that you could select either one of two apertures (f/1.5 or f/2.4). But later, they realised people don't really appreciate it, so they stopped doing it, and also moved to an f/1.8 fixed aperture lens. Hope it clears your doubt. P.S Great Review @Tom Rich .
How much storage capacity do you have on the phone considering you're taking RAW shots? And how much RAM does the S22 you're working with have: 8 or 12 GB?
the reason I would never buy an Iphone is the camera, first of all, the Iphone's camera app doesn't have a manual mode and external apps are not good. second, literally every single iphone even the iphone 13 pro has noisy photos when its dark or when I'm indoors. specially the ultrawide camera is extremely noisy while indoors. literally the ultrawide on the iphone 13 pro is worst than the ultrawide on a 400$ samsung (a52)
How much functionality does the S Pen offer for stuff like masking within the lightroom app? Currently using an ipad pro for on the go edits, normal work flow is day of shooting, then editing on the ipad on the train home and being able to do this on my phone would lighten my load considerably
I did a comparison between both apps, the standard apps features 108 MP, it captures more detail than the raw app, because it is missing the 108 MP option, and you can actually edit these pictures in Lightroom on the phone, so I don't get now why there is a need for the raw app
I've not been using it as my daily phone which is why I didn't comment on it really. However when I've been out shooting with it it's been really good and lasted the whole day
1. Does anyone know the Ultra's frame rates for Super Slow-Mo and for Slow Motion? The manual does not give these specs. 2. Also, do you think "Record when motion detected" in Super Slow-Mo will be activated by the tiny International Space Station passing in front of the magnified sun?
I switched it off about halfway through my testing but to be honest didn't see much difference? I assumed that it wasn't pushed through to the RAW shots. Though maybe this is why shutter lag was bad in the expert pro raw app!
@@ItsTomRich I have not had the opportunity to test it in situations like the ones you present, but at least in Sunsets I did see better color management. Thanks for your time!!!
Hey Tom! I got my S22 ultra a few days ago and need a bit of advice... would you be able to help me out and please explain when you would use the 108MP camera and when would you find the 12MP more useful? As you can tell I'm no expert so forget RAW and all that good stuff 😀
Definitely stick with 12MP bro, unless you're printing the photos you get a lot of the benefit without the huge huge file sizes of 108MP! Hope that helps.
I am a tattoo artist and I just got this phone and I have noticed that using the standard photo option the brightness and contrast/sharpness is way too much. The tattoos look super fake and photoshopped. Not quite sure how to combat this.

2:40 Hello, nobody comments this but. How do you send the raw file to the computer so you can edit it? With the usb cable connected or in some other way? I feel like it's an important thing to clear up and no one does, I'd love a recommendation. Thank you.
Hi! Thanks for the video! Do you now if there is any setting to keep the flash permanently on? I really don't like having to take e photo in order to actually see something..
Go to the top where you will see like a light bolt icon, tap on that, then you should have three options, you will to the right a line cross out of the light bolt, then in the middle you will see an A at the bottom, lastly you we just see the lighting bolt which is the one you want. Both the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and Google Pixel 6 Pro android based smartphones out perform the the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max. @@zehph Scene optimizer makes colors worse in a lot of situations by overly saturating it
Hey it's the Maze Runner guy...no seriously you got very similar features to Dyllan O Brian.
New to your chanel but loved your presentation and video work.
I am mostly into mobile photography and it's very nice to see someone doing comparison to real photography.
Awesome video man.

Thanks so much for watching Divesh 🤙🏻
Hello Tom,
To Begin with, i would like to thank you for the good video, and your time to tackle the details. Great work, kudos.
I would like to address an issue you came out with about "shutter lag" somewhere around 6 min 52 sec. of the video.
in my world, we have a saying, it is not a bug its a feature. I believe it describes the issue perfectly.
The short story is simple:
This issue is not a real bug or issue, this is caused by the nature of expert raw app and how it works. In short Expert RAW is trying to extract the most quality using mult raw photos, so it is only natural to have some delay in action, until it takes all of the multiple frames and make its binning processing to combine all of the frames, to get the best out for the final frame you are presented with. This delay is natural for a phone.
I am not that familiar to get into details, but i believe the short version is the proper explanation which tackles the heart of the issue, and i believe it should give you enough clarity on topic and what is happening in the background and how and why this propagates as "Shutter lag"
Thanks for the informative video
Kind regards
@@hasanagera
It makes sense, because apple is doing single image raw without pixel binning. and because it is single raw without pixel binning, there is the no lag performance.
Please can you you show us how to shoot and what are the settings?
Because I’m not satisfied with mine.
Might do a video on this :)
Just got back from some live show performance and I don't really get it but my colleague actually managed to capture better photos and videos on his Samsung s21 plus then me on my s22 ultra. Both of us are not photographers. Standard settings. His camera is just mind-blowing.... how is that possible??????????
Just use the burst mode or turn on the motion photos to never miss the shot.
5:58 - I find this especially the case with Samsung phones, I'm not a huge fan of their processing.
For the best point and shoot, which phone would you pick? For me, purely on camera point on shoot, I'd still pick a Pixel, with the iPhone in second (Don't like how warm and yellow the iPhone makes most things)
Great review again, I won't be upgrading from a Note 20 Ultra though
Thanks so much for watching Ryan! I actually think the Samsung is better if you're shooting in RAW, but otherwise for simple point and shoot I'd probably choose the iPhone. It's the most natural looking smartphone camera for me.
Great video! Recently received my S22 Ultra in the mail and it's been great so far. Hopefully you'll do more videos about its cameras in the future.
Great video. The reason pro raw takes so long for the photo is due to the size of the lense.
Go the Samsung galaxy store and you find it make sure you are on the S22 series
There is more lag in expert raw mode. Because it clicks in full 108 mega pickles. So it takes time to process that size
But the lag is before you take the shot, not after 🤔
Love your work and your videos Tom, clear and simple for anyone to understand and I love it.
Thanks for watching man glad it was helpful!
Depends on whether youre more in apples ecosystem or androids
What did you go for? 6 months over now :P
@@ethigreenz my phone plan ended a couple of months ago so I decided to wait and I just got the 14 Pro Max

The pro Max obviously isn't out yet, but I do expect it's performance to be very good. But would be very good!
Samsung just kill the compition ❣️❣️
good camera? just look at the blurring on the sides
That's an issue I see and complain about, actually is very very annoying 😒
What if you switch off night mode so the phone doesn't try to stitch several pictures together?
@@skullfazed7776 How do I turn it off in Photo mode ? Will using Pro mode disable it ?

Good video review, i think one of the best on UA-cam, lots of professional info here. One question tho. Do you have the Exynos version or the Snapdragon? thanks alot!
I believe in Europe we have the Exynos version! Thanks so much for the kind comment and for watching man 🙌
@@ItsTomRich So can we expect to see a different between the Snapdragon and Exynos versions in the photos and videos? From what I know SD generally has a better ISP but the latest Samsung A53 with Exynos 1280 has better image processing than the previous A52 with SD 778G maybe Samsung has done more work this time as these phones have the same sensors
Great review and samples. My only gripe with the S22 Ultra is the fact that there's no aperture control. If I want to take a landscape photo at F/11 I can't do that. They oddly took away the setting after the S10.
Have you tried this on the expert pro RAW app?
@@ItsTomRich Hello, yes there's no aperture control in the Raw App.
Oh this is super interesting! I didn't realise smartphone apertures are mostly fixed. Thanks so much for watching man

How much storage capacity do you have on the phone considering you're taking RAW shots? And how much RAM does the S22 you're working with have: 8 or 12 GB?
the reason I would never buy an Iphone is the camera, first of all, the Iphone's camera app doesn't have a manual mode and external apps are not good. second, literally every single iphone even the iphone 13 pro has noisy photos when its dark or when I'm indoors. specially the ultrawide camera is extremely noisy while indoors. literally the ultrawide on the iphone 13 pro is worst than the ultrawide on a 400$ samsung (a52)
Can u do a comparison wid iPhone 13 pro max......I really liked your way of presentation 👍🏻
Awesome!
Can you recommend a good gimbal for the S22 Ultra. I like taking videos of my grandchildren and pictures. Any suggestions would be great, thanks.
S21 ultra vs s22 base model which is better camera
Can the s22 ultra reduce exposure like the Iphone 13 pro without editing?
Hey! Sorry what do you mean? Do you mean in the camera app?
@@ItsTomRich yes in the camera app

How much functionality does the S Pen offer for stuff like masking within the lightroom app? Currently using an ipad pro for on the go edits, normal work flow is day of shooting, then editing on the ipad on the train home and being able to do this on my phone would lighten my load considerably
Try using the flash. It's horrible. Expert pro raw looks great, but the flash is useless.
I did a comparison between both apps, the standard apps features 108 MP, it captures more detail than the raw app, because it is missing the 108 MP option, and you can actually edit these pictures in Lightroom on the phone, so I don't get now why there is a need for the raw app
Try using the 108 mp.mode in low light next to the raw, the raw would yield better results. (i have a s21 ultra)
How do you find battery etc? Just got mine few days ago battery is awful and it's snapdragon but I hear it learns your patterns
I've not been using it as my daily phone which is why I didn't comment on it really. However when I've been out shooting with it it's been really good and lasted the whole day
Funny how smooth your face is hahahha i really love samsung it makes you go to wonderland and gelatinous face at night video.
What😂😂 when is my face smooth lol
Hey Tom, Great Video! Loved your take on the S22 Ultra's Cameras. :)
1. Does anyone know the Ultra's frame rates for Super Slow-Mo and for Slow Motion? The manual does not give these specs.
2. Also, do you think "Record when motion detected" in Super Slow-Mo will be activated by the tiny International Space Station passing in front of the magnified sun?
Do you disable the scene optimizer? When is off the photos looks much better.
Great video 🔥🔥🔥
I switched it off about halfway through my testing but to be honest didn't see much difference? I assumed that it wasn't pushed through to the RAW shots. Though maybe this is why shutter lag was bad in the expert pro raw app!
@@ItsTomRich I have not had the opportunity to test it in situations like the ones you present, but at least in Sunsets I did see better color management.
Thanks for your time!!!
Great tool more than anything
@@ItsTomRich Thanks! Much appreciated and all the best 😉
Anything you can recommend to hold this camera around your neck if using this for photography ?
My s22u does not have a pro raw mode ugh. Has a pro mode buy no raw choice. Should I return it?
It does! You need to download it from the Samsung store :) it is free!
The main camera lens is 23mm not 26mm!
What do you think about the shutter delay? An iPhone instantly snaps a photo! The S22 Ultra always has this few milliseconds delay. Isnt it annoying?
I am struggling to take good macro shots on s22 ultra. Pls share steps to take good macro
In wide shot 0.5x zoom at 4k can you achieve 60fps? My Note 20 Ultra is limited to 30 in that mode.
I am a tattoo artist and I just got this phone and I have noticed that using the standard photo option the brightness and contrast/sharpness is way too much. The tattoos look super fake and photoshopped. Not quite sure how to combat this.
Its mean no need full frame or apsc
It would be great if we can see a comparison between the S22 ultra and Pixel 6 pro :)
What is the highest image size I can acheive usng the pro mode. I called Samsung but I didn't get a definite answer. In the "Photo Mode" I can get an image size of 12000 x 9000, but I have only been able to get 3000 x 4000 using Pro Mode.
Nice so Good.
Is nightography for video a setting or kicks in automatically?

Hope this helped.
@@footballtalk4857 what you suggested is not what I want, because it only activates the flash when taking the picture. I want the flash to be permanently on, as I work with the focus, zoom etc., as possible on Huawei camera for example.
@@stefanbalauca7481 You can use the flash light while zoom in both video and photo, if you really want to see what you taking go to night mode hold it down and in the preview you will start to see what you want, if that don't work then I'm not sure because that's not really a big use case so Samsung may night see a need for it
What you think better this or the 13 pro max
Both the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and Google Pixel 6 Pro android based smartphones out perform the the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max. That's on real world based results, with 'on paper' favoring Apple's ability.
All in all, it depends on the consumer/user and what they are looking for in a handset. Or which smartphone OS works better suited to their individual needs.
