Challenging: How many times was the phrase “oh my god” said this episode?
Nikki & Steven React if the protomolocule was sent millions or billions ago, what happened to whoever/whatever sent it, I wonder
@@hamishsewell4214 Why would anything have happened to them? I assume they would be a massive Pan-Galactic empire at this point given millions or billions of years of evolution and technological advance.
@@darksfallen Fermi's paradox. If they're out there, they're awfully sneaky.
7, I think.
darksfallen what happened as in are they still around, I meant
In my opinion, the space battle in this episode is the most realistic ever on tv or movie. You empty all air from the inside of your ship so when you get shot you don't have explosive decompression, then you throw projectiles at each other, take out any missiles, and hope that you take out more of their critical systems and crew than they do yours. No shields/deflectors, etc.
It’s one of the hallmarks of the series. No swooping maneuvering jus rolling and tumbling through the void whipping rocks at each other.
There is endless potential compared to other space battles, because they don't ignore g-force and changing gravity (microgravity & thrust gravity). All loose objects in the ships can become weapons and the way you fight and move inside the ship can change depending on the gravity & g-force.
I love how much thought they put into their attack as well. They knew the stealth ship had a big advantage by beeing hidden + that railgun. That's why they were hiding in the radar shadow of the Guy Molinari, then simulated the spinning movement of a loose cargo container while approching Thoth station. Depressurizing their ship to avoid explosive decompression, fire & unwanted "thrusters" when their ship turns into a swizz cheese.
Got it in one. In space, combat would be eggshells with hammers -- or glass cannons -- and only last seconds.
Before entering battle they got their pressure suits on and decompressed the ship to prevent them ripping apart under fire.
In other shows, those with "shields" protecting the crew during battle, It is a standard trope that while the battle rages, somebody is always shouting out the status of the shields, as being "50%.....30%.....10%" etc., as a device to heighten the tension of the scene and give the protagonists some time to pull a rabbit out of a hat and save the day.
I'ts amazing how much more tension accompanies a scene without shields, when death might come at any millisecond, and there are no magical rabbits.
Just getting this in early, Gunny stands for her rank in the MCRN, she's a Gunnery Sargent.
Little extra detail too, she's a Gunnery Sergeant in their Force Recon group (which gets the Powered Armor). She's Special Forces.
Gunnery Sergeant Roberta "Bobbie" W. Draper
Has there been a reactor yet that was actually familiar with that rank nickname?
@@Melancthon7332 I've only seen one.
I love how they show the space combat in this show. The way they Roci crew were all in their space suits and had the compartment de-pressurized because they knew they'd be taking hits. The way the crew gets thrown around if they are not strapped in. Alex training with the simulation beforehand.
Doors and corners, that's where they get ya.
Aliens. “But you all knew.” Yeah, we all knew!
Patrick W 😎
Yeah, but they ain't what they seem...
This was the episode where I fell in love with the show.
At the end of the first season I still thought that this was an ordinary show that uses the big mystery in the background as carrot to lead you around for several seasons, probably over the entire run of the show. But then they go straight after Dresden after only two episode. I thought "Great! We will get answers. This show really doesn't waste any time!". And then Miller kills the guy that seemingly knows everything about the big protomolecule mystery.
At first I was like "NOOOOO!", but then I thought "Wow! It takes some balls to do that. They must be really, really certain that they have a strong story to tell!". And rest assured, they have! Don't worry, you will get all the answers you need, and you won't have to wait season after season for it. But once you have these answers, the questions you had will pale in comparison to the questions you will have then.
In this episode the writers and production also really flexed their muscles for the first but certainly not the last time. First there is the fantastic space battle, where the production did an amazing job to tell you everything about the rules of this engangement just by adding seemingly meaningless elements to the sequence. And then there is the final confrontation with Dresden. Did you notice how every character moved accordingly to their motivations? Dresden was moving backwards, close and closer to the wall. Johnson and Holden were slowly following him into his rabbit hole. And Miller moved to the side and towards the door because he had a completely different opinion about the matter. A brilliant scene.
Wow, you open my eyes to this! I've watched all seasons of this show 4 times and never caught that! Thank you! ☺
Miller also moved away to be able to keep an eye on Holden and Johnson.
He shot Dresden when he saw they were starting to _listen_ to him.
@@mbpoblet Yup. Dresden was making too much sense! 😊
This is the first appearance of Camina Drummer, she's the OPA chick with the real heavy Belter accent. She's Fred Johnson's right hand and she's a badass. She'll figure more and more prominently as the show goes on.
As we said, this season takes the show to a new level.
In terms of your argument about whether or not the scientist was talking about saving earthers, keep in mind that he said he doesn't care who is basically leading the charge; he just wants to get back to his research. In other words, it appears that he is neutral and was referring to saving humanity in general. But yeah... this season ... 😁
The scientist at the end of the chapter was right. Why shooting him? That killed the series for me, why people can be so irrational? The scientist was right in all what he said.
@@dartherus people *are* irrational. Traumatised people even more so. Life is messy.
@@dartherus The scientist was coldly logical, but Miller saw that the protomolecule was becoming more important that human lives. Fred Johnson and Holden were becoming convinced that studying the protomolecule was worth losing Eros. Dresden and many of the other scientists, as we come to realize, were unempathetic. When we lose our empathy, we lose what makes us human.
I think Steve may be the only Expanse fan who correctly called Fred Johnson's backstory after watching S1E5.
it isn't that tough to deduce tho
"There's OPA, and then there's OPA."
-every member of the OPA at some point
No true scotsman... IN SPACE!
The OPA works kinda in the way the IRA in Ireland did, it's not completely all under one set of leadership, it's a bit de-centralised, made up of factions - all of which agree on the same goal but their methods vary as well as their level of extremism and steps they are willing to take to achieve these goals. You'll see this develop more as the series goes on and it's definitely going to be a factor of Belter society in the upcoming season 5.
@@ahdvd Well said, - but its not just the IRA - pretty much every insurgency that does not have outside backing that is really controlling it, ends up the same way - look at Columbia - multiple factions on each side. Also, the line between "freedom fighter" and criminal start to get really blurred the longer such an insurrection goes on - rob the bank to finance the "cause" or run some drugs - soon, some get more interested in the money/crime then the "cause", while other real criminals start to call themselves "freedom fighters" just to justify their actions and get help from the locals. A rebellion has to operate in the shadows - if the cops find out your dead, so everything has to be done in secrecy - which faction are you with - you may not even know! and the others, criminals, true believers, or something in between? This becomes an even bigger problem if the rebels win - now you have criminals in the ruling class, and the only thing everyone knows about politics is violence. This is what I love about the Expanse - its realism isn't just about the physics but the sociology, psychology, and politics too! The OPA acts just like a real insurrection - with all the good and the bad.
@@ericvandet8517 Absolutely - one of the things I think people get into in this show without realising it is the level of political commentary that is going on - if you told them that going in they would never watch it! I describe it to everyone who hasn't seen it as Battlestar Galactica meets Game Of Thrones, because you have a fair bit of political intrigue going on in both of those as well as everything else!
Scientist guy: "I don't care who controls the project..."
He doesn't care about allegences or planets. Just the research and it's applications.
Yep he blinded himself by the great possibilities and great possible dangers. But his line of thinking comes from lots of assumptions and great visions at that point. Hardly enough to show any results but enough to get people hyped and on-board. The guy would be doing great if he kickstarted his ideas and experiments, I am sure. Which he kind of did, didnt he?
And exactly why Miller had to shoot him.
@@chaddesrosiers1107 The scientist at the end of the chapter was right. Why shooting him? That killed the series for me, why people can be so irrational? The scientist was right in all what he said. What do mankind gained by killing him?
@@dartherus You put that sick twist down for the same reason you'd shoot Josef Mengele right in the face.
Mass murderers don't live.
@@thomashiggins9320 By shooting him, they are getting the problem worse, don't you get it? even the entire civilization could go extinct by such stupid emotional reaction.
If Mengele was the best shot you have to save billions of people, you use it, don't condemn billions to die just because you want to be on a high horse. You are becoming responsible of more dead people by doing such stupid acts, and you become more guilty than the one you killed.
Stay strapped in and get ready for the Juice! This season does NOT slow down from here.
All 4 seasons are adrenaline every episode haha.
Yasssss. Enter DRUMMER! My personal favorite Belter!
The way this show introduces and then removes character is so seamless.
The scientist said it doesn't matter who runs the project (earth, mars, OPA, whoever), so long as they continue the work. He's scared that there will be an alien invasion, and he wants to use their tech to advance humanity, and if millions of humans need to die to accomplish it, then it's worth it.
Yes but its retarded to begin with, he himself sed aliens shot that thing billions years ago, i mean its kind off enough time to invade numerous galact/systems
I love how the show has a huge multiethnic cast and doesn't make a big deal out of it. It's just normal and makes sense.
It is appropriate to the setting of the show. Shame other modern shows are not like this where ethnicity and race of characters is appropriate to the setting. Looking at you Netflix Witcher. There they threw a bunch of black dudes in a medieval europe-like setting for no reason other than to be woke and appeal to the whining SJWs on Twitter.
That’s why it’s popular still in this climate. Everything is racist or political so it’s actually refreshing to see a show with a diverse cast rely on its writing and merits as opposed to virtue points.
I'm always confused what the fuck people are talking about when they say "make a big deal about it". Like in what show do they go "OH COOL YOU'RE BLACK" within the show that makes some guys get worked up about?
@@jerodast I mostly mean the marketing not making a big deal out of it. With Shang Chi or Black Panther everyone was talking about how groundbreakingingly historic moments they were because of FIRST BLACK HERO or FIRST CHINESE HERO. With all the Star Trek(s) they always make a point about the diverse cast while also making the minority characters into annoying cultural ambassadors.
The Expanse does none of that while still having the most diverse characters I've ever seen on TV or Movies.
It's Canada. It's super multiethnic and not so racist. Unlike other New world countries.
Steven (sees Diogo): Yikes.
Me: Yes, that is correct.
Doors and corners, that's where they get ya
No, they got me at Close Quarters Battle (actually before, but...)
@@ericvandet8517 Exactly, CQB sealed my fate
It's so weird to watch this again after season 4... so many Miller lines ahaha
It's easy to forget or overlook that the asteroid belt and outer planets are, at best, colonies of Earth and Mars. This is subtly highlighted by the discussion regarding Phoebe, in orbit way out with Saturn, but not a "Belter facility", but one owned and operated jointly by Earth and Mars. The Martian and UN navies patrol Belter space, and Belters seem incapable of doing anything about it.
I like to imagine this situation is similar to North America and The Hudson Bay Company, or India and the East India Co., with supposed colonial governments having jurisdiction far, far away from the homeland, but mainly to protect the activities of the companies exploiting the locals and claiming ownership of the local resources. The OPA is not a Belter government. It is not even an organization. This was the lesson from the scene where Fred tossed that guy out of the airlock. How many Belters were in that room? Each represented a different faction within the supposed OPA, which is more a cause believed in by lots of Belters for a variety of disparate reasons than a governing organization.
First the butchering of the Belters at Anderson Station, and now the casual murder of 100,000 Belters on Eros. It is also easy to overlook the horror of both of those incidents while worried for the safety of our heroes.
It only gets better from here on out. Hard to believe, but true. TRUE!
Yes. And when Diogo and his uncle were accosted by that Martian patrol, we saw how casually the Martians were willing to put them into a death situation in space. That was an everyday occurrence for Belters. Belter lives do not matter to Earth or Mars.
We have seen only one Earther who has spoken up for the lives of Belters...that French doctor who urged the UN to send a medical mission to Eros (on a background med bay screen in the first episode of season 2). That guy seemed concerned. But he's been the only one.
Life is a cycle and when we do make it out into space I'm afraid we will repeat a lot of what happened on Earth.
Amos is my favorite. He was damaged at a young age. He knows it and has adapted to it. He knows he's not a leader, so he finds someone he thinks is a good person and becomes their champion.
Yeah, it's great. It's like he has no morals of his own but has a desire to be good, so finds someone who he thinks is good and piggy-backs their moral compass.

Guys! I’m so glad that you are watching the Expanse. It only gets better!
That phrase “not even a rounding error” turns up a lot in the books. You two are so cute. I love watching you guys discover what I know inside and out. Glad you’re loving it. Hope nobody spoils the good sh!t for ya.
Hell Yeah, hello DRUMMER!!! One of my favorite characters!
"how are they not dead??" Because Alex is an absolutely amazing pilot. (I know this is old) but I can't wait to see you, see more Drummer. She is absolutly a fucking badass.
4:13 Holden is a genetically modified Earther. (S1E7) He carries the genes of 8 parents so he is legally the child of all of them. IF YOU CAN AFFORD THAT, you can probably afford to get rid of any genetic "imperfections" (color blindness, lactose intolerence. Tayseks, sickle cell, etc., etc. etc.). Not super power enhanced, just less "imperfect". Wouldn't you do that for your child?
No. I wouldn't. Weird.
Humans are not supposed to be gods. Genetic engineering of humans scares me.
Eugenics wars
If it is a fantastic cast that interests you then Fire Fly is a must watch.
You definitely should watch Firefly
Speaking of cast, don't forget Drummer!
Miller’s behavior makes sense if you watch his reactions during the scene.
Dresden was getting through to Fred and to an idealist like Holden.
He was watching them to see what they would do. Once they bought Dresden’s arguments. Dresden had to go.
You guys are in for a treat. Season 3 is going to blow your mind. :)
I still remember my reaction to that season lol.
I see what you did there Robert! lol
Remember episodes 4 and 5 should be watched at the same time. You are building up to the book 1 finale.
Nick Kelly I think they won't mind waiting a week between 4 & 5 LOL.
What I learned from this one....Don't laugh at Steven's theories or you might get spaced.
I just love how you guys smile when you talk about this show and its cast💗
My favorite Belter Is here... Drum... Roll... Please... '' Druuuuuuuuuuuummer '
It's just starting, you guys aint seen nothing yet.
The small segment at 15:08 shows the depth, look at Nikki. So much info to be digested at once she shut down :D great show
Love seeing you fall in love with the show like the rest of us. Now you can see why there was an unprecedented campaign to save the show when SyFy cancelled it. And can you believe it gets better yet?! Hold onto your seats, beltalowdas...
Camina Drummer ❤

I love her
ana iglesias I do love her too.
She can beat my Drum any day...LOL
Naomi & Holden are pretty cute together. 😏
It is so true! You can make 100 theories about what will go happen next and you will fail ahahah And I don't understand why this TV Show is not so popular as GoT for example! :P
I feel like everyone loves Amos but Holden is my favorite character idgaf
I love Holden, too.
He has the biggest heart
I wasn't too keen on Holden in S1 and 2. But his character develops so well, and by S4 Holden is dope AF.
I'm still primarily team MurderSnuggles.
People tend to shit on his character but being in charge in crazy situations is not a thankful job, you can't make right calls you can only try.
I don't love Amos. He's actually my least favorite from the Roci team.
30:49 - "...don't fuck with Drummer..."
oh, a little too early for that :)
Damn good. Still this is only the beginning...
haha, i love how steven repeatedly looks to nikki with a look that just says "are you seeing this shit!"..... so cute 😂
Yep :D
Just wait until season 4 when Amazon bought the show! This series is going to definitely go some places!
Yes, Steven, we knew. Aliens, but not like you thought. And welcome to realistic space battles.
I just reacted to this one on Tuesday! OMG it was so intense I thought Amos was going to die. It was tension for like 40 minutes!
ah drummer is already here :)
this show is going to keep on surprising you. enjoy the ride.
Great reaction. Heads Up. Some folks are recommending that episodes 4 & 5 should be watched together, which might be difficult with your schedule.
Season 2 is intense but nothing compared to season 3.
Agreed.
Beltalowda!
Which will likely seem tame compared to season 5
One of the many reasons i love this show, because bullets are actually working here.
"Gunny" is short for Gunnery Seargeant Roberta "Bobbie" Draper of the Martian Marine Corps. You will hopefully like Bobbie as she evolves. In the books, you are told that Bobbie is of Maori descent.
The actions of the scientists in this episode always reminds me of the Jeff Goldblum character's quote in Jurassic Park..."Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should." ...and then some Tyrannosaurus Rex eats everybody.
It's doors and corners, kid
If you don't go in slow...

Love how into the show you guys are! Steven you pretty much got it figured out. Glad you guys love the cast, they are all amazing.
Yup, a couple of new Screaming Fire Hawks!!
👽👽👽 🤐🤐🤐 🤣😂🤣
Amos is everybody's favourite. Not wrong there Nikki👍
Hey everyone hope your all staying safe during this crazy period 👋🐈
To add to what others have said about Gunnery Sergeant Draper, the "Gunny" is a special rank in the US Marine Corps, and apparently so in the MCRN. The Gunny is not an officer, but is widely recognized below and above in the chain of command as being the most savvy person in a combat situation. Everyone pays attention to what Gunny has to say.
You may have noticed the conflict between the two UN Navy admirals, with Admiral Souther arguing against escalating military conflict and Admiral Nguyen constantly wanting to heat things up.
I hadn't paid attention to before was that Avasalara sent Errinwright the tip about striking Deimos. She's no pacifist. You caught that right away.
If you go back and review the dialog between Colonel Fred Johnson and the Anderson Station protestors, it's clear (in hindsight) that Johnson isn't hearing what they're saying. Their responses were jammed.
This was the best space combat I've ever seen. One thing that made it enjoyable was knowing how hard Alex had trained to learn how to traverse close to the stealth ship without coming into range of its guns.
If you noticed, Miller had moved back and began watching Holden and Johnson instead of Dresden. He shot Dresden when he saw Holden and Johnson beginning to accept Dresden's offer.
Dresden may or may not be talking strictly about saving Earthers, Earth would wind up controlling it. We can figure that Mao is "Earth first," and Errinwright certainly is, and even Avasalara has said so more than once.
Amos is way more layered than you think. There are scenes in future eps that really, subtly develope him as a character. You'll be surprised at the depth of the character. The actor worked closely with the writers of the books to portray him accurately.
Wes Chathom also worked with a psychiatrist to better understand Amos and why he makes the choices he does. He said he read the books and Amos is his favorite character.
You said it: "Master Race". This is the same monster the Allies opened the doors on in Auschwitz and Mathausen and exactly the same argument. Many wish we'd had a Miller there to blast them all to hell instead of giving them the opportunity to excuse themselves for this shit. The depraved things they did in the name of science. Miller could see Dresden turning minds around right there and he acted. BTW the Mars word you are grasping for is Terraforming. Don't judge Bobbie yet. Like all our other characters (except Dresden), it's better not to rush to judgement.
Would you ever react to Doctor Who? Or the original UK version of Being Human? Or the UK tv series Bodyguard or Line Of Duty?
Just want to point out the "playing god" part is secondary compare to the bigger issue that someone shot Phoebe (a WMD that can corrupt all lives) at earth millions of years ago. Phoebe was an extra solar object that was captured by Saturn's gravity eons ago. The show's premise is that the protomolecule was inside phoebe, presumably sent by some extra solar sentient beings and its original target was earth. So in Mao, Erinnwright, and the scientists' mind, they are "saving everyone" by playing catch up and understand what the protomolecule works so humanity got a fighting chance against whoever shot Phoebe at earth millions of years ago. Therefore, no sacrifice (be it a hundred thousand belters, or his own daughter) is too big.
Mind you, I don't agree with their logic and methodology, just want to point out their hubris in thinking themselves as savior of humanity who made the "hard" decision to sacrifice people they deemed expendable for the good of all, well especially themselves.
It's all acceleration from here on out, folks! Well, until... nevermind. A joke might be too close to a spoiler.
You could tell while that guy was talking that Miller wasn't buying any of that shit. He just was waiting to see how Johnson would react. It was pretty plain to see what Miller thought of all that shit.
I forgot just how badass this episode was.
It's not like Thanos. The goal isn't to kill people. They're just collateral damage of the experiment.
Diogo shows up out of nowhere. That was a hilarious exchange with Miller, the kid got so keyed up over Miller, he almost wound up puking himself..lol.
It may be debated or not but I highly advice if u can to watch episodes 4 and 5 together. You can upload them however u choose but for story development and experience sake watch them together. Technically they weren't aired together but you'll see why they're a pair among other episodes further out. Love love love you guys reaction. I'm so ecstatic you guys are loving it more and more and bringing new viewers to this gem 💎
Glad you’re liking it. This season is fucking nuts. There’s going to be an episode later on that is just going to wreck you (in a good way). Thanks for your reactions. My wife and I watch you guys a lot.
As someone mentioned this is the first episode with Camina Drummer. This show does a fantastic job of showing strong female characters... and you are going to love Drummer.
we told you this show is fucking beautiful and each episode each season is gradually intense and crazy
You keep saying Earth. But the head scientist said he didn't care who was in charge of the project.
Love it, Love it, Love it..... been waiting for a long time for you to react to The Expanse and this is why! That excitement from Steven, the 'O' face from nikki and just the pure enjoyment from watching you's see this for the first time.Just knew you both would love it, who wouldn't. Did you realise your both now Screaming Firehawks too :)
Cant wait for more, honestly, love you two.
I became a £5 patron in march (for my first for anyone) and realized you had the Expanse on the £10 tier, but yeah its worth! I'm becoming a patron for you both again.
Dont worry only Diego's own stupidity can kill him.
He was talking about humans being able to travel the galaxy and hibernate the whole trip without need of concern for protection. To be able to habitat on any planet in any atmosphere. Guess the guy who shot him has thing against God complex.
Haha, if this episode has blown your expectations, hold on to your asses. This is just the very tip of the iceberg.
I'm a bit late to the party, I'm aligned with the series up to this point. Just wanted to say that what Miller did there, has to be *the* action with the most implication in the history of humanity. Hehe.
I needed something to cheer myself up today, so I decided to re-watch this video again. I think this maybe the first time I've ever watched a reaction video more than once.
Gunnery Sergeant Roberta Draper
I scream like a fire hawk when a new react video comes out 😱
It's so awesome to see you guys as hype as you are about this show. I know I keep saying this, but if you think this is already cranked way up, you should prepare yourselves and hang on tight. You are in for one hell of a ride. And I agree. The characters are the best part of it. They actually have character arcs with real development that makes sense for where they've come from and what happens to and around them.
Like you said, this is just getting started. I cannot wait.
God I fucking love this show so much. You are in for an absolutely treat with the rest of this season, and then somehow it gets even better from there!
So cool to see how much you are enjoying it all, the story, the writing, characters, production values and actors.
Talking about actors, you should see all their amazing effort and contribution trying to revive and sell the show to another platform (thank you Amazon Prime) after the SyFy channel cancelled it at the end of season 3.
Haha! You think that was intense? Oh, kids...it's only going to get more intense from here on out. ;)
Not sure if anyone else has suggested it yet, but episodes 4 & 5 are generally watched together...okay, *I* can't watch them separately. Haha!
So dope that the two of them are so invested already and it is just warming up 🙂
...and Steven had it completely right for once and got his “aliens” too 😂
Not _Martian_ aliens, though. Proper extrasolar ones.
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned, but Book 1 of "The Expanse" ends with Season 2, episodes 4 & 5. Those two episodes really should be watched back to back. I think it aired as a 2hr special. As intense as this episode was, buckle up, the ride just gets better and better.
Episodes 4 and 5 were unbelievable 😀
I know this is years late and nobody will see this but Daniel Kash, the guy who plays Dr. Dresden who Miller shot at the end? He was the dropship copilot, Private Spunkmeyer in Aliens.
We see no matter how old the video so thank you for commenting
