I’m sure it feels like it’s going slow to you but to me it’s happening much faster than I expected when you first bought the house! Especially considering the condition it was in. You’re doing a beautiful job, thanks for sharing it with us!

I know sometimes it feel so overwhelming and almost claustrophobic with everything stacked in piles on top of each other and the mess just never ever ends. You start in one end and end up doodling in the other end and all of a sudden the entire house is all half done. Seriously though dont get disheartened, from one full house renovator to another the best tip I can give is to completely finish one room and dont move on until it is done, you can then close it and move on and go in there and breathe when the house feels like it is choking you lol. The next tip to not get crazy is to not actually have any furniture in your house and just add furniture the the room you are working on at the moment. It is a game changer and maybe its just me but it gives some free space in the brain to get creative and prevent overload. I know thats not possible for everyone to have a storage space etc but the process is so so so much better for sanity and happiness.

having the 2 shades of stain gives a depth of color, to me it always looks better when you have both cool and warm in a floor that way when you change out decor or wall paint it will always go with the floor--it sounds like a happy accident to me

I just want to thank you for showing the clutter, bc it makes me feel so much better ab my piles. We have been in renovations for a year now and sometimes it gets so overwhelming. I just have to remind myself that I'll get there! I love the new dining room colour, that was a great catch. Changing it totally changed the room. I also love how the floors turned out, happy accidents are the best!

When you sand the rest of your floors, always sand down the length of the board, not across the floor boards. You will leave marks from the sander that will show up in the wood once you stain them! Ask me how I know this, lol.

The floors are beautiful! I like the new color in the dining room, too.
Food for thought - too much of any color (light or dark) puts the room out of balance. While it may seem a great idea to go all lighter, in order to showcase the lighter color, there needs to be some dark to set it off - and visa versa. Most coastal designs I've seen make a point of including something darker in the mix to accent the rest.
I'd be tempted to refinish the mantle rather than paint - you have the stains that match the floor? Why not use that instead of paint? The mantle is intended to be a focal point, paint will make it fade into the wall.
Looking forward to the next round. :)

Love the darker floors - definitely a better choice than the original plan! Also that oven is gorgeous. Replacing skirting boards is *such* a pain though - the mess that you'll create by removing them is huge and worth reconsidering when you're already moved in (we luckily removed all of ours and dealt with the debris/holes in the wall before moving in and have slowly been putting in the new ones this last couple of weekends to finish off new floor+wall paint)

I adore all your renovating but personally i would have put a new floor above the old wood. I lived for 10 years in a home with such floors buuut cleaning it hell nahh, also then my allergies got worser and i also got small wood pieces in my foot because of it being used😂. I get the money saving part, but were there more reasons for not doing all floors before moving and after painting. I am interested. I know i will never ever get wood with small spaces between with much old dust under but still it looks pretty pretty awesome. 🤗🤗❤

I love that your bringing an old Victorian Lady back to life, the only thing that makes me sad is when people renovate they overly modernize the older homes such as light fixtures, doors, windows, and removing, and painting over beautiful woodwork with workmanship you don't see anymore. You can take your Grandmother's antique mirror and have it resilvered. Your hard work is paying off beautifully! Love from Phoenix, Arizona

I know its a bit late now but if you ever need to apply stain to the floors again you can get a woolen applicator pad on a long handle which makes it so much easier to apply. It must have been painful doing all of those floors with a paintbrush. Your home is looking gorgeous 😍. xx

I am actually building a “sort of” bookshelf (we basically just hang up stained reclaimed wood on a wall) for our living room and I accidentally bought a stain that ended up drying super dark but I am very pleased with how it turned out. Sometimes, the prettiest things happen by accident. That said: I love how your Floors turned out! We moved a while ago and our budget is very tiny. So decorating our new space takes much longer than expected. Seeing your home really inspires me because you guys are taking your time as well. I have seen many youtubers redoing their homes and they pump tons of money into their houses and get it done so quickly. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that but your house journey is so much more relatable! ❤️

Awesome video Hermoine, the floor came up looking great! I'm not sure if you only have the stairs left to do now but I sanded the floor in my Victorian bedroom a few years ago and I found using a long paint roller (like what you would use for walls) much easier than a brush for staining and varnishing. Putting in decking screws, sanding with the grain and gap filling also helps everything go on smoothly and stops those pesky loose or squeaky boards.
What colour is the paint in your guest bedroom? It looks fantastic with the new light shade.

It works best to sand with the grain and direction of the boards when doing hardwood floors. Also when applying the stain there is a tool you can get that looks like a Swifter style dust mop that makes staining floors so much easier. Good luck.
P.S. I like the pipes just painted.

How are you finding the floors, specifically drafts through them? I have a Victorian home too with nice boards I have considered stripping and using as the actual floor, however they are not tongue and groove so the drafts between the boards are quite noticeable, even when covered by carpets you can feel cold air at floor level. I have seen thin wooden fillets that can be fitted between them, but it's a lot of work. I'd be interested in your thoughts especially as the weather turns colder!
