Enjoyed the video. As a Home Economics (sewing & textiles) major back in the late 60's I can see how the American fashion industry has been destroyed. I used to sew almost all my clothes but in the late '70's the fabric became so expensive, it was cheaper and more economical to buy ready to wear. The quality of the ready to wear was actually very good. Fast forward to now. I have a hard time finding a top that is cut on grain, even in the better stores with prices $80 and up. There's a boutique shop here and I have noticed how many of their garments are not cut right and their prices aren't cheap. In my opinion the owners should send these garments back, but since the general public doesn't realize the problems with the construction, it will be foisted on the general public. I'm now back to needing to sew, but the quality of the fabric available locally is horrible.

What an eye opening conversation for someone like me who has no clue about the fashion industry.
I came to this channel for the hair growth/styling, but I am completely intrigued by the fashion side too. ❤

This is why I also buy vintage clothing, often USA made (I'm in US). They are better quality materials and the construction is also finished correctly. I don't usually buy items made after 1985, because that's when it seems we began off-shoring the garment industry.

I mostly buy my clothing second hand, not only because it´s cheaper but also because the quality of the older pieces I have is just sooo much better! I have a burberry trenchcoat that was made in 1999 at the latest and it still looks as good as new even though I bought it second hand. I incorporate lots of austrian folk wear pieces into my wardrobe as well and those are usually made out of wonderful fabrics (linens, wools, thicker cotton, etc…). Whenever I browse through a fashion store like H&M I´m shocked by the quality or rather lack thereof of the pieces…

I must say that pleats are special. I used to work summertime for a pleating company in Montreal. I believe it was called Andy's Pleating. Exactly as I saw on your show. Cardboard on bottom & top with fabric in between, folded into pleats like accordion style & made into huge rolls, tied up & thrown into a steam room.

I really enjoyed this interesting & historical interview - what an amazing family. Thanks for sharing.
My concern is these unnatural fabrics.
We are just surviving as a species - to Thrive I believe we must put the Health of our Environment/ Mother Earth/ Nature first & foremost - therefore any product made from artificial/chemicals is not natural & causes problems / byproduct of toxic waste has long term affects.
All we've been told that was ok/good & / Healthy for us is slowly being exposured as the complete opposite & is causing mental & physical ill health. In my opinion.
Its just that Ive done alot of reading & have lived & seen many yrs of change from the inception of the Industrial Complex as well as my own experience with these unnatural fibers .
These days I try to look at life from a bird's eye view - its a totally different picture
    Have a blessed day .

Not me *literally* in that moment, pressing a sleeve on a wool coat I'm working on, while I am listening to this and hearing "it can make it or break it." 👀👀🙈🙈

I'd love to hear how the coat turns out! I'm sure it will be beautiful! A tailored wool coat is still on my "to make" list 😍

20yrs ago I apprenticed w/ a special occasion couture designer and we shopped for materials in the NYC Fashion district; There used to be a huge selection of stores for each type of notion and for fabric, but now it’s basically been reduced to Mood Fabrics and even that I feel doesn’t have the quite same quality to price ratio as it once did. Wierd to see how the garment industry evaporated in just 2 decades

I enjoyed this, and was so impressed by the high quality of the work at Tom’s Sons but even more so by Mr. Kalajian’s speaking with such kindness and practicality, and explaining everything in terms we can all understand. I am relieved about his support of polyester as a better quality (and easy-care) fabric, as I have seen so many examples of very beautiful polyesters that I wanted to try. For example, I thought that they could be used as impressive but inexpensive lining, since they go on sale so often. My stance used to be that polyester and I don’t get along!
I would be interested to learn more about the various types and weaves of polyester fabrics, and their uses, especially in regard to how comfortable and wearable they are, as I notice some of them are used for sports or travel wear, and are touted as “breathable” or that they “wick” moisture away, etc.

From what I have experienced & read Polyester, Nylon & other chemically made fabrics are not natural & they let off poisonous fumes when heated. Is possible a. cause of infertility.
Mother earth cant decompose them therefore are toxic for environment & humans.

I'm getting back to sewing. So much so, I've ditched my electric machine and invested in a treadle machine. Waiting on a new belt and small parts.

I've only noticed getting sick off modern polyester that was made in China. I'm very sensitive and I care about anything affecting the endocrine system or over all body, both immediately and in the long run. I've never felt sick from wearing a garment made in the USA, 100%,including fabric manufacture. I'm into texture and color, but also how the garment effects my health, which is why I love to make my own corsets. I don't know how the USA vintage garments made of polyester effect my health, but at least they don't make me feel sick right away and they keep me warm.

Im with you on the health issues of polyesters & all unnatural - chemically made things. They leak poisonous gases - affect hormones etc.
Also not biodegradable - Unhealthy for Humans & our Environment.
I wont put anything on my skin I cant eat. I believe we need to get back to Nature❤Natural everything to not just survive but Thrive as a species-

Fascinating subject. Thank you so much for this interview. I really hope that the growth of vegan fashion and vegan consumers will help support environmentally friendly, quality polyester fabric production.

I'm curious as to why you support polyester over the natural fibers? Polyester is a petroleum product,

@@vickilim1644 it’s strictly bc of the use of animals. I know polyester and pleather are not good for the environment, but personally I cant ethically buy silk, wool, etc. I’m really hoping the synthetics industry will clean up its act as consumers demand non-animal derived eco alternatives. Like possibly closed loop recycled fiber products, for example. 🤞

    • @vickilim1644
      @vickilim1644 10 місяців тому +2

@@dunkel429 Sheep have to be sheared regularly or if their coat is allowed to grow without the shearing can cause the animal problems. That is your source of wool. I can understand your issue with silk. Cotton, linen and hemp are plants as is modal which is from bamboo. Ecologically all that I have listed create less issues than the synthetics and they can be recycled. These natural fibers allow the body to breathe better which your polyesters and nylons are not good at unless treated with more chemicals.

Excellent interview. Confirmation by a well experienced expert of what I've been thinking for so long: people have no idea how impoverished they are right now actually. We are experiencing civilization regress, not progress.
Ask Yourself how many people could actually afford the wardrobe ( of the same quality, both in manufacturing and textile ) of a 1920's common worker in Britain or any other developed European country in fact.
