  • Because you’re Worth it!!!
This week’s brand new episode, Fashion &… Worth, takes a look at the father of Haute Couture, Charles Frederick Worth and the establishment of his fashion empire, the House of Worth.
Established in 1858, the House of Worth reigned supreme for almost a century and was firmly considered the epitome of Parisian luxury fashion.
Ran by four generations of Worths, the fashion empire dressed the international elite and its clients included the newly moneyed upper middle classes, the aristocracy and royalty.
The House of Worth, which once defined glamour and elegance, is now symptomatic of a bygone era, only existing within the confines of history or the coveted fashion museum exhibition.
Enjoy delving into the world of Parisian Haute Couture and the House of Worth!
    Because… You’re Worth it!!!

My husband's great aunt had a Worth wedding dress - ecru lace over silk - and a pale green going away dress, also from House of Worth, probably dating to the 1890s. The family donated the dresses to a local museum in the 1990s and they were still in excellent condition - quite wearable. So, not only exquisitely made, but made to last!

Fabric came in 22" widths back then. When Worth saw the first cage (sprung steel) in hoops, one fitting inside of each other when flat on floor, he commanded it be made in 200" round, the largest of its time. Thus requiring 9 panels of fabric.
Because Worth still worked under M&G, he was only allowed to order (4) hoops.
Later in life when Worth felt comfortable with is position in fashion and his wealth he had his favorite pattern EYES & EARS woven. From a design of a garment in a museum he frequented.
The wearer, was stating, "he saw and heard" everything.
Worth made a lose frock coat for himself of said fabric.

Omg I am so jealous! I've been trying to get my hands on 'Worth - a Century of Fashion' by JP Worth for at least half a decade!
    Love the video btw :D
Am I the only one thinking there should be a feature length documentary about Worth and his house?

Goldkehlchen20 I was thinking exactly the same thing when I was researching and writing this episode! Why hasn’t there been a movie about one of the greatest fashion houses of all time! My husband got me a copy of A Century of Fashion for Christmas 2019!! I am very lucky... it’s an amazing piece of literature! I also managed to find an acid free, conversation grade storage box to store it in which is pretty much the exact size!!

Fabulous video and illustrations. I have looked at Worth sketches in the V&A library. In the 1990s I used to make original artist dolls (19" in resin) My first series was called Fashion Plate Ladies 1875-1882 and they had idealised features and a cuirasse shaped corsetted body. Then I invented one of a kind dresses for them. I sold some and kept some - good fun while it lasted!

I first learned about Worth in Fashion school and I took a very deep dive into all things Worth. One of austrias most famous dresses is the white star dress from Empress Sisi which you showed.
The funny thing about the dress is, that the Empress saw Virginia Oldoini wearing a star dress and she wanted one too. She also copied the stars in her hair which are now her trademark.
Nobody knows what happened to the original dress. In fact there are several photographs of the dress and not one does look alike. It's even said, that the dress of the painting never existed and that it was just painted.
I always wonder if there are still old order books or fashion drawings of the dresses and if they know how the dress really looked like...

Worth is the reason I love the fashions of the Victorian period. The details of the dresses have a certain softness and intricacy which contrasts the stiffness of the structure of the garments which make them impeccable since its a perfect balance of hard and soft.

Striking I agree but not really evoking the rich history of the brand. There were so many bespoke textile designs original to the house of worth that could have been used. It’s a shame it didn’t take off though.
