  • The Canon EOS R6 was released with IPB compression but not ALL i.
    I decided to do some tests to see the difference between IPB and ALL i.
    I couldn't tell so I thought I'd do even more tests to make sure.
    Here's what I found...
    I hope you enjoy watching this video. Please like, share and subscribe for more gear reviews and tutorials. Leave comment down below in the description and I will do my best to reply! Thank you :)

    Can you tell the difference??? BTW the jitters I was talking about wasn’t the image stabilisation. 😂 there’s a slight stutter round the edges.

      Eos R6 will also have 10bit 4.2.2. IPB(compered to 8bit 4.2.0 in Eos R), so you will probably not gonna see all of these jitters and lack of details when panning.. :)

    Awesome that you did a few more tests! I can't really spot any major differences between the two, even with the water shots. It'd be interesting to extract a frame from each example though and maybe there you'd be able to tell? Overall though I think you are providing a lot of relief for people who had concerns about the R6.

      Thank you 🙏🏻 yeh you have to look so hard to notice anything. Both are fine for what I’d use it for. Yeh I went through looking at some still shots too and it’s just the sharpness that is different. I can’t wait for the R6 🥳

    Another great video! Honestly the ONLY difference I could see was the sharpness between the too. I feel like the ripples in the water were a little more jittery in IPB but then again, I was looking a lot harder than most people would, and I don’t think the average person would be able to see it. Definitely giving me more hope for the R6, especially since they’re adding the All-I.
    Cheers!

    A specific use case where there is a distinction between the two codecs, is green screen work for VFX. If one is pixel peeping for green screen, one probably wouldn't be using a prosumer hybrid camera, anyway. However, if one is needs to make a choice, IPB is unacceptable for pulling a key, if fine edge detail like hair is important. After you pull your key and try to composite with IPB, there will be a slight 'shimmer' which needs to be corrected.
    There was a minor controversy for this reason, when Black Magic Design pulled the Cinema DNG codec from their cameras.

    I agree, those days you can get grate image from a random mobile phone. I used IBP mostly with EOS R due to the file size, but realised that to make the best of this grate camera would be to record in the best possible file compression, which provide higher quality image.

    Thanks for the 1080p footage! All the reviews on UA-cam are shot in 4K and those reviewers don't try Full HD. We are only interested on good quality 1080p 24fps and 1080p at 120fps. But he problem is, are 120fps slowed down in camera? Or can you have a 120fps sequence at normal speed and then slow it down in computer? Using the Final Cut's optical flow is the key. Thanks!

    • @SamHolland
      @SamHolland  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching 🙏🏻 yes, to get the smoothest, most natural slow motion, you would have to film at a higher frame rate and then slow it down in your editing software. I hope that answers your question. I only filmed at 50fps though. Optical flow doesn’t always work as it can make things really wobbly. 🎥🤩

      @@SamHolland Thanks for your answer! Yes, we have a Sony a6500 only for b-roll and when shooting at 120fps you can import the videos at 120fps and normal speed, then you can slow the video down in your computer. But the Canon r6 works the same? Or it shoots at 120fps but converts the video to 24fps in camera? If it is true, that's a problem U_U

    Ipb is infra frame Codec. It means that only some of frames has all information, and those information are share for couple more frames.
    You might see a different while recording leaves or confetti over solid color background. It will be subtle

  • @g.s.3389
    @g.s.3389 4 роки тому +23

    You nearly found on your own the differences even not knowing the tech behind. If I may explain you in simple terms I hope to help you and your followers (although it is a lot of time I do not work in video compression anymore).
    let's suppose you recorded a video composed of 6 frames using both All-I and IPB, it would be like this:
    ALL-I: IIIIII (6 frames all "I")
    IPB: IBBBPI
    B means Backward predicted, means that it is "not a real frame" but is predicted using the two "I"
    P means forward predicted, means that is predicted using both "I" and B.
    so if you want to go the 3rd frame you have to compute all 6 frames.
    that is why PRORES and others (i.e. MJPG) are faster for video editing, you can scrub among frames with no computation at all.
    being "B" and "P" predicted, you have to make a lot of decisions in the algorithm parameters.
    While in ALL-I it is like you have to decide if you want to go simply lossy or loss-less (think in a simple way ALL-I like all JPGs where you can go up to loss-less using different type of encodings).
    in the example above the bitrate of ALL-I is (to simplify) 6 times the size of "I" frame, while in the IPB can be low as much as you like depending on the quality you decide to keep, but always lower.
    I hope this helps. ;)
    PS: on internet there is a lot of confusion between Intra-frame and Inter-frame; ALL_I mean all INTRA-frame, while H264, H265 and others, are all formats (containers) using INTER-frames....

  • @matthewTobrien

    Great comparison video, Sam. I've got my R5 vs R6 video up on my channel and touch on the ALL-I vs IPB thing as well - I personally prefer ALL-I because of that different of detail/sharpness. It's noticeable enough to me to make me care, especially when I use my EOS R as a b-cam with my C300 MkII. Need all the sharpness and detail I can get.
    For someone who's doing UA-cam videos or home movies and wants to keep their storage costs down, IPB is definitely the way to go. The data rate is quite a bit less, so you can not only save on SD cards but you can save on edit drives and archive drives as well.
    Some of us, however, just obsess over having the highest quality possible even if the visible difference is minimal. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      It does help mate!!! I’ve tried upscaling to 4k once and the export got soo big!!! Didn’t see an improvment after YT compression!!! I did it because I watched a video saying that if you upload a video at 1440 or bigger another compression is been applied and the video looks much better!!! Didn’t work for me!!! I didn’t tried uploading from google chrome!!! I will!!! About the ninja v, I have been thinking about getting one but i’m not sure!!! In my opinion only will help to avoid transcoding!! I don’t think it will improve quality when video is for youtube only!!! That’s a topic, image quality is that important if the video is for YT and compression will be applied anyway??? I’ll may get the shinobi instead, you know, I’m a sony shotter, no flip screen for us!!! In my last few videos I am acctually doing something interesting tho, that is changing the sequence to 2:1 ratio, that’s cool!!! Specially in latest mobile phones!!!

I haven’t watched any of mine for a while since I started uploading to google chrome. I’ll have to check. I’ve heard that the ninja v doesn’t give the Sony much extra power. Was running a test of HDR filming mode on an older 5div with the specific task of filming property interiors. Interestingly, although you might think the HDR mode would be good for this, the footage was virtually unusable as it caused massive jitter if you need to pan a room and then need to speed ramp. Interestingly, HDR filing mode is only available with IPB compression on that camera. A more regular FHD filming mode (with 60fps) and All I worked better. Think the jitter becomes much more pronounced when the subject is closer to the camera.

    I did exactly the same test about a week ago on the R and drew the same conclusions... any differences seamed marginal.
    However I will say that someone pointed out one aspect of my tests that I'd missed where it did show a bit more detail in All-i, and I'd still prefer to have it on a professional shoot where I just might encounter a scenario where really IPB doesn't cut it.
    Its very difficult to perfectly repeat a moving shot for each codec, so these kinds of test can't ever be scientific... I think we just have to decide if each one looks good enough for us or not.
    I also suspect Canon's history of delivering poor quality IPB codecs in earlier / more affordable cameras is giving people room to hate on them. On their newer cameras like the R its actually quite good now.
    I've never questioned the quality of my Panasonic GH5's IPB codecs, so why should I suddenly have an issue with Canon's? As long as its given enough data to play with it should be good enough.
    I will be getting the R6, primarily for the IBIS and 100fps 1080p... and also because the low-light performance should be at least 1 stop better. Those features out way the loss of an All-i codec for me, but like you say it looks like All-i is coming to the R6 via a firmware update anyway.

    I have an 80D that I've shot video with for years. I've always used ALLi. The files are MUCH bigger, but even today - I did a quick test filming white socks on the floor with natural light coming through the window - on the IPB, portions of the socks were blown out and muddy, while the ALLi seemed to handle the dynamic range much better. This is on an older Digic 6 processor. I don't own a higher processor in Canon, but it seems - by some of the tests I've seen on youtube, the better processor (now up to Digic 8) seems to have (perhaps?) bridged the gap between ALLi and IPB much more closely. I would be interested to hear from others who've worked with ALLi in the past and now with IPB on better processors on their experience.

    I'm interested in R6. Thing which confuses me mostly is overheating in 4k30. Recently wrote to Canon and found out that R6 will support APS-C mode (without oversampling) and it allows to record a bit longer than FF. In oficial Canon overheat tests this modes tried only in 60fps and gave 5+min to recording time. Tech support responded me, that this mode also available in 24/30fps and technicaly this must to increase maximum recording time because in APS-C camera uses native 4K resolution (FF uses 5K with oversampling). But they didn't told how effective it would be.
    Now I really wait for tests from independent youtubers. This camera would be great, if it will allow unlimited 4k30 record at least in crop mode.
    Otherwise it will be unusable for me

    Thanks for an excellent video. I bought an R6 about a year ago. Stills are fantastic but very disappointed in the video [and the recently announced R7 still uses IPB; and the All-I R6 update appears to be figment of imagination]. The quality of the R6 video in MP4 with IPB is poor for movement [I use very similar settings to you] because of a juddering/stuttering effect making it feel jerky. Its particularly poor with movement with birds e.g. avocet feeding on shoreline as the beak moves backwards and forwards in less than 0.5 seconds and i think confusing the prediction technique of IPB. I get much better results from a small 14 years old panasonic camera using All-I using both MP4 and even better mts. Would welcome any thoughts or advice. Thanks you - and hopefully everyone is pressing Canon to support All-I in the R6 and R7.

  • @navireljan1857
    @navireljan1857 3 роки тому +1

    Sorry but people keep saying there's loss in quality. Theoretically in programming there should be no loss in quality. Reason being is that when codes from I frame transcode into P frame, RGB color codes becomes geometric algorithm codes meaning maintaining same pixel color information but fully dependent on the I frame depending on similarity and minor shift in pixel color chroma & luminance and predictive movements.
    These codes are shorter and can shorten bits of information. B frames further more uses P frame and I frame to transcode RGB color codes the same way but much much smaller information since these frames depends on two frames, changes in pixel chroma and luminance are less dramatic. Each frame would look like the same as JPEG or MPEG, but just coded depending on two frames; IBBPBBI, P frame depends on two I frames, and B frame depends on I frame and P frame.
    What is the best use for these codecs? Well, only problem with IPB is playback and rendering speed. IPB has too much complicated algorithm on it and it's harder to read on playback compare to ALL-I which essentially just pictures stack together. But that makes ALL-I ridiculously huge file sizes.
    So, if you have problem with file storage capacity use IPB, but if your problem is computing power then use ALL-I codec.

ALL I compression method works by capturing frames as keyframes and compressing them using an intraframe method of compression. in video quality there is no difference at all.

There is misleading in your video. You can say next why shoot raw 8 bit is enough and you cant tell the difference. I think everything is good for UA-cam even 720 but you cant say there slightly different between the whole frames captured and only one frame every 3 frames IPB is nonprofessional at all its for home use. And canon want to say 2500$ is so little to sell you non crippled product and some people come out cheering.

      It existing doesn't mean anything. There are tons of things like 96k hz audio or 240hz monitors. At some point the performance improvements you see are negligible in comparison to the side effects. In most cases larger file sizes or in the case of monitors, more strain needing better hardware and higher prices. The same is true here. There is a difference but it sounds lot more important on paper than it actually is in practice. Sure some people may still want All-I just to feel better at the end of the day but the proof is in the pudding that in actual practical use, it makes very little difference. Outside of maybe a few outliers,

    • @Mo.Alsir85
      @Mo.Alsir85 4 роки тому

      Jake G i disagree with you video world you cant say no difference between this and that. Because you will never see huge difference like 4k which all people want is no different than 1080 and you cant notice difference watching it but its 4 times larger so you as creator can crop and zoom without losing quality and same goes 4k to 8k and same goes for IPB and ALL-I. In ALL-I creators need all frames to be able to have full control of them content and even ALL-I have LT quality and HQ quality and there’s people need more so you cant take all that and provide only IPB and say its workable. Ican say everything is workable and everything is minor difference i can even work with my smartphone camera. but getting only IPB in 2500$ capable of doing ALL-I camera thats a crippling rubbish im not saying it should do 4k raw or 8k or 120 in 4k. But in this price no camera is doing only IPB. And yes there is big difference between IPB and alli for pro work and pro colour grading you may not notice it in 8bit but with 10bit wich the R6 is capable of is clear if you know what you are doing not mention the hard work your pc or laptop should do with IPB specially in big long projects

Like in this case everyone said water ripples will make a huge difference. And every time when it’s actually tested it made little difference. Again the facts are right in this video. I agree that a 2500 dollar camera should have All-I. But to act like its crucial is absolutely incorrect, as at this point it is wayy less important than even 4k over 1080. It didnt even have a major impact in editing. Unless you are green screening something or doing high end mask work I don’t think it makes much of a difference. And even then I have to see someone test those applications, it could just be people making false claims.
