Daniel Butler Speech at Jim Varney Memorial - Feb 16, 2000

- This was a speech from Jim Varney's Memorial Service at War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee on Feb 16, 2000.
Daniel Butler was part of the talented writing team behind the countless Ernest commercials, movies, and the Saturday morning TV show. As an actor he appeared as Chef Eddie in ERNEST GOES TO CAMP, Earl the Barber in HEY VERN, IT'S ERNEST (TV SHOW) and Slave Willie in DR. OTTO among others. I feel this speech is as touching as it is funny and it served as a huge inspiration as I wrote the book, "The Importance of Being Ernest: The Life of Actor Jim Varney." / beingernestbook - Розваги
18 years later, Jim is still missed!
1f5sda1991 I wished he was still alive :( always wanted to meet him 😔 RIP 🙏
i never got to meet him he was 1 of my cousins and seeing this video makes me wonder what was he like? and no watch his movies is not telling me what he is like sure they tell me he was an actor and was funny as hell but no I mean what was he really like off camera I wish I could go back 20 years into the future and actually meet him
@@Dobviews we need to meet face to face because i want to know more about him he was family to me and i never got too meet him and i would love to get to know more about him
Even after 22 years he died just before I was born
Jim Varney was proof that you don't have to be vulgar to be funny. Everything has its place, but he was a special brand of comedian. Few comedy acts translate from childhood to adulthood and his is one the best. I still laugh and get moved by films like Ernest Goes to Camp.

I'm watching this in 2021 and 21 years later Jim Varney is one of the most underrated Comedian
Stilled missed 20 years ago Jim Varney left us way too soon. Loved ya Ernest. Cigarettes have taken too many legends.
Yeah, I miss him. He's one of the few celebrities who I can actually say elicits an emotional response when I think of him being gone. There are maybe a handful of others I feel that way about - the others being John Candy, Robin Williams, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. There's just something about him like those others. You really get the sense that the person you see on screen is really who they are. Thanks, Jim.
23 years later Jim is still missed!
I visited jim's grave today in Lexington ky beautiful cemetery. RIP jim you were the best.
Rip Jim we miss u badly please come back to us
My 9 year old son loves the Ernest films. I loved them as a kid also. Thanks Jim.
My mother owned a little resturant called Granny's Kitchen in Ridegetop, TN in the 1980's. Jim happened to come into that resturant one evening. Everyone greeted and spoke with him and before he left, my mom snapped a Polaroid picture of Jim hugged up to Miss Jennie, a wautress who worked there and Jim was holding up a corndog with his free hand. he was dressed in white slacks and a white long sleeve button up shirt a pair of dull red suspenders. he had brown hair, more puffed out in the back and he had that famous grin streched on his face. the picture album we had it in has since been lost. Always was a big fan of Jim and his work, i remember when Ernest Goes to Camp premiered at the cinema in Springfield, TN. he was one of a kind. i think he lived in White House, TN for a while. We all miss you Jim.
Please come back Ernest/Jim. Miss you pal ❤️🥺
crying. hope I see Jim in heaven. TMNT & Ernest until I die.

I loved Jim! I laughed so much. Didn't know he had passed. What a loss. He was a good looking man with a gentle spirit. See you in heaven, Jim.
I miss you Earnest and can't wait to see you in heaven some day. You taught me a lot about comedy growing up watching you. I still get in trouble for acting like you in public.
Ernest.
Blessed are those that were close to him. Blessed are all that got to enjoy him. What a great clean class act he was.
I met him when he came to my school when I was in kindergarten and I sat next to him in the cafeteria, but I’ll see him again when I go to heaven
You are so lucky
I swear, I thought I never get to see memorial videos of Jim Varney. He’s nothing but a magnificent, charismatic, stunning, yet the funniest actor of them all. It’s quite a shame that I don’t get to see him and Robin Williams in a single movie
23 years later and he is not forgotten. RIP
God bless you all!
I miss him EVERY day.
I remember Jim Varney saying, "Aiir Brakes!!!"
Coming up 17 years. And it seams Laughing is something people forgot. I will be watching Ernest Goes To Camp... Beverly Hillbillies this Feb 10, 2017... Miss Ya Jim.. you was a big part of my childhood and have shared his humor with my own kids.

I love and miss ya, Jim Varney. It's a damn shame you're not with us! :-(
That broke my heart, but I'm so glad I get to see this....So special!
With tears. I just feel like you were a genuinely good person Jim. I saw interviews with Chevy chase and others.. You were soo humble and kind with his words and actions. And hearing from the family made me even more sure that you are a gem.
I sincerely hope you are in heaven.
I don't even know him personally but he makes me feel so humbled.
2021 and I watched "Ernest Scared Stupid" as is a tradition in our home each Halloween. Jim Varney is still very much loved. May he rest in peace.
It’s very sad to get old. When you look back on dates and times you try to remember where and what you were doing. So reflect on quality of life not quantity. This man truly had quality and he left his mark.
Thanks VERY much for posting. Never would have seen this otherwise. Very special.
Thank you Sean. Yes, this speech was very special. I just loved it so much that I re-printed almost the entire thing for my book. I wanted to share it with as many people as possible. -Justin

RIP Jim. Ly man
Daggummit Justin. Tears running down my cheeks. That was the best, most honest thing I may have ever done. May I post it?
+Daniel Butler
Very touching! I cried. Jim was a staple of my childhood. He reminds me so much of my father. I live in Rural north west Georgia, so we have the whole southern thing. My father looks like him, sounds, like him, acts like him. He unfortunately smokes like him too. He has very bad COPD. I wish Jim didn't have to leave us while he was still so young. I see a Ernest marathon weekend coming up. I need to introduce my son and young sister to the wonders of Ernest P. Worrell.
+Daniel Butler Dan, youre the best actor who work with a guy like Jimmy Varney. The haircut sketch is very funny as the biggest challenge to play a half deaf barber. Remember how Ernest come in the barbershop asking a "Wall Street Tycoon" and you understand something like balloon, baboon or moon. In the cut scene, you always use the clipper for the ending before to dry. Good job and thanks for Earl the barber!
Daniel Butler hi
Daniel Butler i grew up in Lexington kentucky and attended lafayette high school the same school as Jim Varney attended and i remember seeing Mr.Varney's picture outside the drama room... I was proud to of walked the same hallways as he did... I was a huge fan and now decades later my chikdren are even bigger fans and have been to the lexington cemetery on more than a few occasions to pay my respects! What a talent!! Would have loved to have met the guy!😭😭

Daniel Butler was hilarious as Earl the Barber. The fast motion haircut screw-ups were so funny.
Thank you so much for sharing this! It literally made me cry, and laugh, and then cry again and I don't cry easily. Truly moving and one of the most beautiful tributes I've ever heard. I've just started your book, Mr. Lloyd, and I'm so in love with it. Jim Varney is so very special to so many of us, and your book is so lovely and is an amazing tribute for your uncle. X. ~Brandy

That's Jim, for sure! He had a few funny scenarios for taxi drivers too!
Jim Varney was very hilarious.
Mr. Lloyd I really like Jim...I used to imagine him playing a detective similar to Andy Griffith's Matlock.
This is Eddie from Ernest goes to camp. The skinny chef.
yeah, he’s a great comic as well
And that's your world as I see it
Great video

dan butler wasnt just a writer and friend of jims he was earl the barber in all the series and movies. jim varney is no doubt the most successful hill william to ever live
I loved Jim/Ernest. If only he hadn't smoked he would have made more Ernest movies in the 2000s. He will always be missed.
He died at the same time era as when our best friend of the neighborhood died, Im sure that they have met each other in Heaven and met Prince in Heaven by now.
2 lbs of chocolate and coffee ?!?!?!
he must’ve been geeked out for hours, running on a sugar buzz and a caffeine kick
We miss jim

He was a great actor
Hey Earl,Todays a special occasion and I’d like a haircut. I want you to make me look like a Wall Street tycoon!
The actor who played Ernest and slinky
Never ever smoke people.
You forgot a comma.
terminat1 Where?
Certainly after "smoke," unless you wanted to warn us not to smoke people.
terminat1 Ummmmm both then....Never "Smoke" (Those are quotation marks) and Never smoke people.
Never ever smoke cigarettes, either.
God I loved him! I will never forget him as long as I live. These are hard times. We could use some Ernest💖
Just watched Ernest goes to jail for lile the 20th time lol RIP
I’ve only known Jim for Toy Story and Toy Story 2
Rip him varney
Just wondering if you know if Jim ever played a character named Vernon Viper, in commercials years ago.
Por este motivo en la versión original, Slinky tuvo que ser doblado por Blake Clark a partir de Tot Story 3 🥺🥺
Nash and Ernest was funny Ernest goes to jail
I have the entire catalog..forever ernest
I sure liked that boy. Over.
rip slinky!
I guess Jim would enjoy seeing all of this "Social Memorial Media", and he'd laugh about other hard-working artists whose pay check didn't increase until after their deathS, too! I suppose it's time I do for him what I've done for so many others, (whom have not received my endeavors too well sometimes., (i.e. Taylor Swift's habit. ) but I feel a song comin' on for Jim, and to the tune of one of his favorite, yep, "Mullenberg County..". Still , in some of my dreams, Jim's with and some great harmony makes it appearance, again!! Ah, the memories of Jim and Joe pulling into my driveway with that big old Chrysler , that brought them from Kentucky to California,"And Then Some"(Jim's comment) I think he meant to Jack in the Boxes from Santa Monica to Reseda,! Those were the days I remember so well. Does anyone know where Abbie Marable, and a real estate friend named "Doug Blankenship " are these days -Doug's help was crucial in getting Jim started by helping Joe Liles and Jim "Along the Way" ...Also , their friend, Jim and Joes' from the University of Kentucky, Brenda Maddox ? "Sematha the great drama queen gone rogue," they called her? February, 2000, My God, where have we all been in those TWENTY YEARS!
Jim Varney was awesome in "Hey Vern, it's Ernest!". Bill Byrge was so funny.
2019
You knew my cousin Jim?
Chris Stuckman grew up with Ernest.
Did anybody saw Woody on Stage!
