This really takes me back. My favorite part of playing Darksun was rolling 5 backup characters just for the first session, and then choosing which one would be more powerful in the current campaign. To not make death feel completely meaningless our DM had a rule that after the third TPK(Total Party Kill) the campaign would be over, so having at least one PC survive was always our top priority.
9:38 That cactus is why I became a defiler. RIP party members.
Awkwardly excellent vid man. I played quite a bit of Darksun. You nailed it.
Thanks mate!!!
Excellent analysis.
A lore note regarding the Githyanki of Athas... They actually had developed an advanced civilization on that world, until the Illithids detonated the psionic equivalent of a neutron bomb over the Githyanki city. The resulting psychic shockwave destroyed the Githyanki's higher reasoning functions and resulted in the feral race of Gith seen on Athas today. The ruins of the ancient Githyanki city contain a planar portal that will take brave souls beyond the Grey.
Outstanding. My favorite campaign setting!
Not bad for a non-Dark Sun guy, you got all but 4 of your points right. You did a good job of conveying the overall feel of the setting, and did it in a humorous way. Keep up the good work. I’m going to sub, and check out some of your other videos.
Thanks! Which 4 points did I get wrong?
Dark Sun’s the only official D&D setting I’ve run since 2010’s 4e version so I’d like to be aware of the mistakes. I dislike high fantasy settings which is what drew me to Dark Sun.
Edit: I was actually more worried about getting Spelljammer stuff wrong because it’s not my forte.
@@AwkwardGMCorbin Dark Sun is high fantasy.
@@al-Assas I guess I should say not Tolkien-esque then?
@@AwkwardGMCorbin Sorry, I was just being nitpicky about semantics. Yes, Tolkien-esque is spot on, as opposed to the other old classic: Conan. Dark Sun is Conan-esque. :)
I still have 4 more hours at work. When I get home tonight I’ll respond with product names and page numbers. I think you may be right when it comes to 4e stuff. They gutted the setting to make it fit the edition, so I don’t know how much of what I saw as wrong was that. My answers will be from 2e canon. I’d like to do some sort of collaboration, if you are up for it. We both love Dark Sun, WoD, and even though I have never played Call of Cthulhu, I’m a huge love craft fan. I’ll send you a Facebook friend request.
One other thing I was thinking about some of the stuff could just be stuff the narrating character believed to be true. One way or the other, this is a very fun video, I’d love to see more traveler’s guides like this.
I've wanted to use planar travel to Athas as a way of getting rid of enemies. I couldn't destroy for one reason or another. Death Knight won't stay dead. Drop them on Athas and forget. Can't figure out who's responsible for that Boneclaw drop them on Athas and forget.
Meanwhile there is a Halfling Tribe that is very happy for the weird portal that drops “food” every few weeks.
Great video
Thank you!
