    New Ways of Using Magic in Dungeons and Dragons- Why 5E D&D Needs Dark Sun
    Defilers, preservers, Dragon Kings, Sorcerer Kings, and the Veiled Alliance are things that are different about magic in the Dark Sun campaign settings. We break down and discuss how these factors effect life on Athas a desert planet. Another thing we delve into is how these different factions interact with the general populace and each other in the campaign world. It's important to understand all arcane spell casters had to draw on the life force of Athas. Didn't matter if you were a bard, sorcerer, warlock, or wizard if you use arcane spells you are drawing upon the same energy source.

    A gritty world where players have to actually struggle to succeed? Hell yeah! That's my jam!

    I played the 4th edition Dark Sun and it became the legendary highpoint among my group. Having to scrap for supplies and a constant threat of death or slavery for the magic users made us identify with our characters to an incredible degree

    Thanks I've been looking for a way to narratively justify multi classing druids and Assassins , in Dark Sun it make sense.

    that is one hell of a coincidence!!! i just started a few weeks ago long time, prepared and convertet dark sun campain with 5e rules =) lots of good thoughts in thisone guys! keep up the good work
    And even tho it took me month to get everything straight from dark sun with the 5e rule set, i stillwould love to see a official conversion.

    Yes, Dark Sun is a really cool idea for a setting and I would like it in 5e. Scarce materials, crafting, psionics and the whole spellcasting system of the setting "kickstarts" the GM's and player's inspiration from the get-go.

    I've never been into Dark Sun, but the idea that using magic has a cost (aside from having to rest every day to recover spell slots) has begun creeping into the Vancian D&D system. What is the Chaos Mage Sorcerer's Wild Magic Surge other than the payment due the universe for disturbing the equilibrium? The question is, how to introduce similar systems for other spellcasting classes? I still think that the basic distinction between arcane and divine magic, which has been in the game since the beginning, is that users of divine magic focus primarily on restoring equilibrium (e.g. healing), because the basic power to create and change rests with the gods, whereas arcane magic users claim that power for themselves (and therefore, should generate greater costs and paradox effects).

      Magic has a cost associated with it... countless hours spent in study/practice/prayer/devotion/etc...
      Dark Sun is intended to be a low arcane magic world, hence the reason they designed magic to have additional costs associated with it... above and beyond the core mechanics.
      Eberon is your high arcane magic world and the Forgotten Realms is your standard arcane magic world.
      If you alter the magic level of a setting, it would have a drastic effect on how the setting looks and feels.
      For example, arcane magic is rare on Athas because of those additional costs (i.e. being kill on sight in most circumstances, ruining the planet, etc...) If you remove these costs, more people would practice magic and it's not so rare any longer.

    My introduction to DS was in 4e. It was my favorite campaign setting book, though Eberon seems kinda cool too.
    From lv1 any arcane caster could, on their daily attacks, draw life from their allies within 100 feet equal to each of their healing surge value, and it allowed you to reroll your attack.
    There's sets of defiling feats. There's some at heroic tier that are okay... But at paragon (lv11-20) there's 2 feats you can take you can increase your crit range and/or deal more damage when you defile. Sadly the extra damage is pitiful.
    I would like DS in 5e. It's an interesting setting where all those extra rules everyone throws out like encumbrance, food, light level, sleeping, endurance for traveling distances, and number of arrows, become a big part of the fun of the game for good reason. I'd also like to see 5e's version of the Sorcerer King patron/pact for Warlocks. Should be deliciously evil.

    I would love 5th Edition D&D to bring back a NUMBER of the old settings. Not JUST Dark Sun, but also Ravenloft & Dragon Rider. I even loved the idea that Dragon Magazine had of Greyhawk 2000. Who wouldn't love a Modern High Fantasy setting?

    Would love a 5E dark sun campaign setting
    Some fully fleshed out rules for psionics would be good too.
    Tried to run a campaign in 4E where the parties entire goal was to depose and replace one of the sorcerer kings but the rules felt too clunky and after 10 levels it fell apart
    Would love to return to that plot line in 5E

    eh, if you could take energy from your enemies during combat and use that to fuel your spells which are also dealing damage to them in combat, I would consider that pretty op in 5e.

    • @martincampbell4211
      @martincampbell4211 7 років тому +5

      I think the idea is that it's indescriminsnt so your party members would take the hit too.

    • @clericofchaos1
      @clericofchaos1 7 років тому

      eh, they didn't really say that. if that is the way it works, I guess you could convert it pretty easily. otherwise it's kind of like casting multiple spells in one turn...like if you went to cast fireball and took 8d6 of health from your enemies before hitting them with the 8d6 of the fireball...I would freaking love that, but people always complain about balance.

    • @NecromancyForKids
      @NecromancyForKids 7 років тому

      clericofchaos1 I agree being able to take from enemies is too powerful. In 4e, you could only take from allies.

      Why would it even work that way?? Clearly that isn't a downside

    • @FlyingDominion
      @FlyingDominion 6 років тому +1

      They said you had to be pretty powerful to be able to siphon from people; until you get up there you'd only be able to use siphon from plants.

    Dark Sun is my favorite setting, a setting so harsh they encourage players to begin at level 3 lol. The history and lore of the world is amazing to, learning that the hated and feared dragon/sorcerer kings were actually once heros that were supposed to save the world and did but in the end also were responsible for reducing it to the wasteland it now is. Loved how they turned most of the races on their heads to, don't go in thinking you'll play the stereo typical pc race at all. Clerics are probably the most drastic change, no gods so they draw from the elemental planes. Really hope they add it to 5E.

      Uhhh, they were genocidal maniacs from the jump - they set out under the promises and deceptions of Rajaat to turn Athas back to the blue age from the green age. They only turned on Rajaat because he planned to return the planet to the halflings, not humans. Then after sealing him away they continued to defile the planet for power

    One of the biggest issues right now with bringing Athas to 5e (officially) is implementing psionics. Once the devs get a concrete system established the process will become easier, but even then the lore of it all becomes an issue. The writers kind of wrote themselves into a wall with the content, as it is. 5e is ambiguous enough with itself that you can play the game any way you want, but is the current write-up of psionics fitting with the Dark Sun setting, or any setting for that matter?

    • @gambent6853
      @gambent6853 7 років тому +2

      Yeah, Psionics plays a huge part in Dark Sun, so they need to get that polished before anything Dark Sun can really be done.

    • @AAron-gr3jk
      @AAron-gr3jk 5 років тому

      Psionics was different in 2e and 3.0 and 3.5 more flexible. I liked the psionic power point system. the problem is 5e is already at-will spellcasting with augments.. so now there is no distinction with Psionics. be interesting if 5e keeps psionic "spells" in line with the other system or if they are again going to make a sub system

    I would like to see some suggestions on how to adapt existing classes AND how preserving/defiling can be integrated.
    I don't think a full official release is necessary between the original and the 4e release, the genre touchpoints are easy to grasp.

      There's an excellent 5e conversion on gmbinder which I'm currently using in a newly-started DS campaign. He's got a player's guide and Athasian Monster Manual
      As written it bans a lot of stuff, but I disregard all that because it's more fun letting people build the characters they want. The only thing hard banned is Sorcerer, since metamagic effects are recycled as Defilement effects. The costs and limits are adjusted, but any arcane caster can use them (based on the vegetation levels of nearby terrain). Already had one memorable moment of our wizard damage boosting/upcasting Magic Missile via Defilement right before dying, to gun down the guy who got them in that mess.

    I’m all for it. It may not work for every story concept. But more options and ideas exchanged is better. Right?

  • @stefenswanner7739

    i actually made 2 arcane options , defilers and preservers, that ALL arcane users had to choose at 1st level. I went and took the effects of 2nd ed athas, dumbed it for 5e, and bam

    I love you guys bringing up these Campaign setting specifics of the worlds Wizards ISNT making sourcebooks for. I was never a fan of FR, as my introduction into D&D was Dragonlance, and the setting my mates and I had was Eberron; so I was never going to be happy with this FR-heavy release of 5E.
    Mechanically Im happy with 5E, as its allowed me to bring in new people, and Iv started being the DM for that group... but yeah, just this heavy focus on the Forgotten Realms in 5E's sources has just bored me. What was wrong with Mystara? Its generic, sure, but its D&D's generic...thats the point! *sigh*
    ...didnt help that they make the Players Handbook, then release the Sword Coast Adventures Guide, practically repeating all the race stuff from the PH in the SCAG... like, what was even the point of that? (Yes, I do know, Im just being annoyed is all)
    ...also, give me Tasselhoff over Drizzt, anyday!
