- A short video of my 1983 ex-CIE/Dublin Bus "KC"-type GAC citybus driving down the Old Airport Road towards Santry, Co. Dublin on 24/4/2009... the massive blast of air heard half way through the video is caused by the unloader valve which vents the air system when it hits 9 bars (prevents air system from over-pressurisation)... the blast of air was a real unique part of the KC & KD type buses in addition to their quirky and uniquely Irish charachter
@donaghtlc - this bus is a preserved vehicle and doesnt carry passengers anymore, it's privately owned by myself and attends vintage shows/rallies and is used occasionaly in films. Whilst this is the only preserved one currently in Dublin Bus green there's about 25+ of these buses preserved all over the country.
This really did have a unique harmonic sound when moving.
What a brilliant video, thanks for posting this, brings back good memories.
The ol 27 bus. I loved travelling on this when I was a kid. Thanks for posting
noisey things these were, i miss them though, alot of memories flooded back when i seen this video thanks for the upload
STILL SOUND LIKE A LYNX BUT WITH THE ZF SOUNDS MAD
i used to love those buses
and those old school seats
The humming is not from the engine, its a sound produced by the gearbox (whining) and differential (groaning)
markthebusman In other words, the differential is a GKN/Kirkstall unit, but our Flxible Metros used Rockwell differentials.
A KC shares the same gearbox as a Metrobus, hence the similarity! Its a Voith D851, I heard a Gardner engined Metrobus a few years ago and I have to agree with you on that one!!
nice gearbox sound~
Cool if you could do the old 47b which went via Orwell Road and Leinster Road it would make my day
hellfire sounding vehicle!
That groaning/whining almost sounds identical to the hub-reduction on a Mercedes O305 or M.A.N SL200!
MAN SD202 and MAN SD200
Hi, no I'm not based in Kells, and sorry but these vehicles are not on public display
Yeah have some scrolls from Phibsboro & Donnybrook
@ClassicTVMan81 yes there was only one, the prototype KC bus that had the KD running gear, fleet number was KC1 or factory designation was "B1" built by FFG in Hamburg in 1979, this prototype was completely off-the-wall, unlike the others it was fitted with a Detroit 6V-71 and an Allison V730 gearbox, with Rockwell front and rear axles!!
To make things even more interesting, one of the prodction models of the KD double deckers, KD146, was fitted with KC running gear! Talk about a bit Irish!!
I miss that sound in Dublin. Do you have other scolls from garages that had KCs??
I remember these so well! Didn't realize there was any left, How many of them are actually left?
@macaroonlee - no problem - glad you like the video!
The registration on KC 48 would've been ZSI 48
I remember in Waterford the registration on KC 5 was ZSI 5 and on KC 6 was ZSI 6
No probs, are you a member of DFB...?
@kayleighreddin - I know I said I do "requests" but this is a bit outta my league!!
i notice the sound of of a twm and mcw metrobus has the twining sound but a bit louder the kd buses engine no were as god as the kc engine i am afraid
I don't have a KD mate... :-D
