He was a medic in the national guard for 6 years, he is a journeyman electrician, and a jujitsu coach. The name came from he injured his shoulder and was on workman's comp and he started a tick Tok and called himself the fat electrician as a joke to his wife. I’m a 58 year old Cold War era Army Veteran (was both a 15D & an 11B), was discharged 2 years before Operation Praying Mantis happened. I served under Reagan, say what you will about him as President, but his foreign policy was on the spot, basically it was in layman’s terms “Fuck with America and I won’t hesitate to send in the troops to fuck you up”.

I was in Operation Praying Mantis. Besides a few mistakes (no one gets it right), I love his delivery. Our FC took out the 22mm chain gun in one shot (he was THAT good). Just out of curiosity, would you be willing to share the mistakes he made?

    • @toddhutchins2492
      @toddhutchins2492 5 місяців тому +7

@@Mr_Cellophane I can give a couple, but it will get too long. It might be nitt-picky, but details matter to me.
      1. The Samuel B. Roberts didn't steam into the mine. She was at anchor and drifted into it.
      2. There WERE 3 SAGs, A B & C. B (the one I was on - USS Merrill) was to take out the Sassan oil platform, and C was to take out the Sirri oil platform. We wound up taking out 2 oil platforms, 2 frigates, 3 Boghammers, and a bunch of small craft.
      3. Merrill was the only ship to shoot at Sassan because the USS Lynde McCormick's gun had dropped sync with the radar and the gun was "walking." They couldn't repair it in time, so they turned over the firing to us.
      4. We initially gave the platform a 15 minute warning (farsi, english, farsi, english) and the ended with "Have a nice day.. We then gave them a 10 minute warning, a 5 minute warning, then the final warning. We told them "Is everyone off the platform?", they returned, "We're not leaving." So we opened fire. we fired 2 rounds before they opened up with the 22mm chain gun. Our FC took out the gun with one shot. He was THAT good. Then went back to firing the air bursts. One reason for the air bursts was a toxic tank on the platform we were3 trying to avoid. The other reason was anti-personnel.
I think that's enough for now. Like I said, Nic's delivery was very entertaining and largely correct. I've seen several descriptions of the battle, and no one gets it completely right. I have so many anecdotes from OPM, and that WestPac in general.
One last thing, as far as I know, everyone involved with the battle got a Combat Action Ribbon, except for the Enterprise crew. Word has it that their CO pissed off the area commander, so he took it away from them.

    • @Mr_Cellophane

@toddhutchins2492 that's incredible that you can recount that so vividly. Thank you. I love hearing military history. My dad was in the navy from 78 to I think 82 or 84. I was supposed to join but I decided to take a darker path and now I'm 34 in no condition to pass MEPS. I actually live an hour away from Nic, and with as much time as I spend in his town it's annoying that I haven't met him yet. We used to talk on ig before he blew up the way he did. But I'm super happy he's getting as big as he is. Super nice guy, deserves all of it.

Ok, first, US Naval Veteran here. Also a Naval historian. Yes, I've spent a majority of my 53 years in this life studying US Naval Doctrine, Warfare, Support & Logistics capabilites along with our adversaries.
I served active duty 88 to 96, so yes, I am well aware of operation Praying Mantis.
Here's what I can tell you, the United States is hands down, the absolute best at refitting/repairing ships. WW2 cemented the US as not just a world Naval juggernaut, but the world Naval juggernaut, and it's not even close. China? Russia? Forget it. I don't care if they are triple, quadruple, 10x the size of US Naval ship numbers. They don't compare, it really is like that.
You have to remember, our support and logistics, the ability to repair and refit shops, is unparalleled globally. Not to mention our aircraft carriers, which are just massive. We ran 478 active warships in 1988, we run half that now, but our doctrine of fighting 2 theater wars at once, is not compromised.
Ya, we are that bad ass. We don't run from the danger, we run towards it, and we do so with the best technology, the best trained crews and the best support structure in the world. So, from the US Navy to any potential adversaries that think they want to man up and go toe to toe, go fuck yourself, you have no idea just how bad it can get, but we'll be more than happy to show you, so step off if you dare.

If I remember correctly, our _museum_ ships are the second largest navy in the world. They're just parked and floating, but like the movie Battleship, we can fire them back up and get to work very fast. They won't be the unstoppable titans that they once were, but they're good enough to rock 80% of nations. They could also be enough of a thorn in the side to let the big dogs sneak in.

At 15 miles, that Iranian fast-attack boat mentioned at 14:30 is at (or just beyond) maximum range for a destroyer's 5-inch guns. Here are some stats for those guns:
Range: 13 nautical miles (14.9 statute miles) with conventional ammunition.
Rate of Fire: 16-20 rounds per minute automatic, conventional ammunition.
    Magazine Capacity: 600 rounds conventional
So they can lob a 5-inch shell (measure that out with your hands to see how big it is) at you at the rate of 16-20 shells per minute, and keep it up for 30 - 40 minutes before they run out of shells. Keep in mind that while conventional shells aren't "smart", the radar which is watching them in flight and land IS, and it can direct the fire control system to make corrections on all of the shells yet to be fired. And each US attack group had 2 destroyers.

The shipyard it was towed to happened to be in the process of building another frigate of the same class. So they had a partially constructed section already there halfway assembled. They just repurposed that section to fix the Sammy B. and started building another unit for the ship under construction. Worked out pretty well. The US got a lower than expected turn around on a nearly destroyed ship and the shipyard got to charge for an entire new section to constructed which naturally cost many millions of dollars plus the dry dock and repair yard costs. Over all that made for a very happy shipyard.

The thing about the Soviets "just taking pictures," they were there to observe American military tactics in a real fight. America knew that but wasn't about to threaten them when they've got their hands full with another country. If anything, America would want to show off a bit, intimidate the Russians with raw firepower, which may have factored into why this operation became so "proportional."

26:55 actually the ENGINE of a Frigate is a gas turbine, and they have MULTIPLE spares of those just sitting in warehouses ready for use. Replacing the engine is EASY ... it's everything ELSE that takes time to build, like Hull, bulkheads, plumbing, electrical and mechanical linkages. (I actually signed for one of those engines when at HMAS Stirling [Australia's western base], and they cost about 3 million dollars each and come in a crate about 2.5m (9 ft) high and about 5m (18ft) long. Then I panicked the next morning when it had disappeared. The contractors had come in at 5am to install it and took it without telling anybody, so we spent 2 hrs hunting down somebody to sign for it.)

Concerning repairing the USS Samuel B Roberts (FFG-58), we do have a history of fast turn arounds and miraculous saves when we want to...
    Remember the USS Yorktown (CV-5)?
Majorly damaged in the Battle of Coral Sea and would be out of action for several months... got patched up and repaired in 72 hours in time to be at the Battle of Midway, where it was attacked by a Japanese bombing squadron, but managed to get damage under control enough that it was AGAIN attacked by another japanese bombing squadron who thought it was one of the other US carriers. It STILL didnt go down until it was sunk by a japanese sub the next day while repairs were underway.

14:47 ... actually, you CAN'T see another ship at 15 miles. A ship at sea can't visually see another ship (unless they're rather tall) unless they're 12 miles away or closer ... that's why radars are mounted at the top of masts, to give them a longer detection range. At 15 miles you might be able to visually see the top of the mast of another ship, but not the ship itself.

From experience I can definitely say they didn’t work on fixing the boat 24/7. It would have gone through months of planning and inspections to find out what needed replacing and then you have to wait for the engine and steel plates to be made. There was probably only two or three months of actual work involved so the whole thing is even more impressive
