Hey man, when I have a stubborn restoration like this I use an auto detailing degreaser to remove adhesive and it works SO much better than the alcohol for these types of jobs. Night n day. It'll take all that adhesive/residue off in just a couple of wipes when using just a few sprays of this stuff on a cloth... It's powerful stuff and might damage things if left sitting on there for an extended period of time, but it's designed to wash away very easily so you just wipe over it with the alcohol right after and you're good to go... I've used it countless times on several different components and surfaces and I've never had a single issue. Works like a charm and is a complete game changer. You'll no longer "lose the will to live". Lol... I don't even worry about adhesive or stubborn residue anymore. It's fantastic stuff! Cheers.
@@SuperMarioAPA3968 🤦♂️is that a joke?! He's a UA-camr not a repair service. He's restoring and repairing his own personal collection, not someone else's... These minimalistic designs for the Game Boy are amazing. I love the Pokemon and Mario Game Boys specifically, and if I could find some without having to take out another mortgage, I’d happily repair them. Ohhh the joys of retro collecting.
I find scrubbing the carbon button pads with first a wet cue tip and then a dry one leaves a nice matte finish that really improves the responsiveness of the button presses. They tend to get flat and shiny over time, which makes them less responsive. It takes some friction to really rejuvenate them.
I'm surprised that after all this time no one had sourced a correct color polarizer for the pocket. Especially with the explosion in popularity of gb repair lately.
I tried cleaning the motherboard of my childhood GBC, and the speaker was what I was trying to clean and ended up causing some kind of issue to make it sound even worse after I put it back together. I wasn't doing a through clean, I was just using a Qtip to wipe out some of the dust but it didn't appear to like that. I thought I was being gentle... I'd love to restore my childhood GBA as well. If I ever get any soldering equipment maybe I could replace the old speaker in my GBC... maybe get a cheaper one and do the backlit screen mod.
You guys crack me up. To remove the adhesive from the polarizer , get a bottle of goof off( NOT goo gone). add a small layer of it on the glue. Let it sit for about 10min, add some goof off to a cotton bud and work it in a cirle. Wipe it off then finish with ipa. Hope this helps.
Lighter fluid as well. No idea why people insist on using alcohol. They complain that they have to use so much, yet never stop and think "Hmm, maybe it's because it doesn't work very well"
Austin Evans should watch this video. Depside that he makes videos usually about modern tech, Austin is a *HUGE* Pokemon nerd (in a good way, I promise) and he even has his own Pokemon collection and their matching consoles, including Game Boys. He would love to see this video (alongside some of your others Pokemon related videos)
Wet hair is fine, just glad you took the time to get clothed. Not sure what the algorithm would do to you if you did a review in the nude. This is a really sweet system.
Man the Pikachu Gameboy is so clean! Grew up on Gameboy and pokemon. I wish I was into handhelds more, but Im more fond for collecting N64 now then Gameboy. 99.5 % isopropyl is the way to go lol
Not too long ago I picked up a DMG style Pocket that was supposedly "broken" -- at some point batteries leaked and ruined the battery contacts, but other than that I don't think it was really ever used (batteries must have leaked not too long after purchase). Button contacts looked pristine. I still need to solder a new battery contact in, but it works for now with a power adapter in the bottom
8 recommend Using WD-40 and a plastic card(old Dave and busters card, train card, etc) and slowly sliding it in to remove the polarizer. This is way easier as the WD-40 eats most of the adhesive.
Omg I have this one! The one I got isn't in great condition either but it's well loved and taken care off and just a bit of IPA was enough to keep it up.
Curious question, I have a PCNY GBA, its coloration is worn in a few spots. I wanna keep the original, official casing but I want to get it looking closer to new. Is there something I can do to get it looking newer without replacing the casing? Like a specific paint color I could use to patch the wear. Have a gold spray paint at home but it's a more vibrant yellow color while the console uses a duller and almost greenish tone.
How long has it been since the last restoration video? I can't remember the last one I saw that wasn't an introduction to some wacky/obsolete device, lol
Why do you use alcohol to remove adhesive? Alcohol doesn't break it down, you might as well be using water. If you have to use that much, that should be an indication that it's not working. Use lighter fluid. It breaks down the adhesive and makes it much, much, MUCH easier to remove. It'll likely only take a couple minutes to get it completely cleaned off.
I just clicked on the video, I'm at 00:00 and seeing the title made me scream "PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF PRESERVATION DON'T REMOVE THE GODDAMN STICKER ON THE BACK" in my head. *Edit* Finished watching the video. Awesome, he didn't remove the sticker. Guess now I have to click subscribe 😅

I think you can use olive oil for the sticker that was on the pikachu gameboy

My heart melted as soon i noticed the power light it's actually Pikachu's cheek that's so cutee and cleverrrrrr
My first ever GameBoy was a Pokemon Yellow edition, and it's the same thing there.
@@vedritmathias9193 same! The Pokémon Yellow GBC :)
Immediately looked up the listing on Ebay, I guess once the auction is done your house is paid :D
Pikachu's cheek is the on light!
PIKACHU'S CHEEK IS THE ON LIGHT
so cool

Woah woah woah. Why do I have a legend.
@@isblue8504 just a rare game. Pretty valuble

You're the one who got me into repairing video game consoles. Now it's become one of my favorite things to do. Thanks
It was you! You outbid me on this gameboy!
Oof
Your quality has gotten so good. Idk how you did that with all the house stuff going on. Props.
Love the restoration! You should try a swirl remover for the pokemon one! You will get all the weird scuff off with that polish compound!
Every time I see a video about the Gameboy, I know we're gonna get to see some sick Tetris skills.
Something about a close up of unscrewing game boy screws is super soothing

I have been waiting for one of these for a while. Great job
These types of restoration videos are my favorite. Nice job Elliot!

"Shovelware game", he says.
It's Trip World, lmao. Iirc, one of the rarest GB games out there.

211 pounds?? That’s a heavy gameboy!
A small amount of WD-40 works way better than alcohol on that adhesive.

the last picture of the listing is amazing 😂

I have a Pokemon Yellow Gameboy color, with the blue back.
You did an awesome job.

😂😂😂😂
Great job! Always interesting to see these Gameboys being restored.
Holy hell Elliot. Invest in some Goo Off it’s so good for these adhesives. As a detailer I can tell you they’re safe for most plastics
these videos are so satisfying.
This was really amazing! Nice build 👌
Nice repair. you should start a forum! it would be great. but i think your discord might do as well
What the hell where was the girlfriends tooth brush joke
Looks like I'll need to do some restoration on my GBA.
I love to watch people restore old games consolle (restore them too)
not sure why youtube un subscribed me from you. missed you and went for a search and added you back. keep up the great videos.
"Sorry about the wet hair". Doesn't look any different mate XD No worries.
Loving the sort of trip-hop music btw.
I saw someone use Brasso in a video to remove plastic screen scratches. Not sure if you’ve tried that already
Well done Elliot, another great video from a real youtuber.

Can sympathise with the sticky screen residue being a ball ache to remove, most frustrating thing about repair jobs like these.
Lighter fluid will solve that problem. Breaks down adhesive very quickly.
I truly feel that removing the polarizer adhesive has left me with permanent mental health problems
Clean body, clean mind, clean gameboys
Love your restoration videos! Keep it up 👍👍👍

The bay noise back together 🤣
1:39 What's this? Matching batteries? ON THIS CHANNEL!?
Always wanted a Light!
Hey Elliot, thanks for the new video, how you doing?
Pretty good restoration, I'm not shure but you could try using thinner or acetone to remove the glue from the screen.
Omg I have this one! The one I got isn't in great condition either but it's well loved and taken care off and just a bit of IPA was enough to keep it up.
My word I’m late to this one. I know how your channel just hinges on my views, lmao. Thanks for vid Elliot. Appreciated as always!
Still a boss at restoring Gameboys. Still terrible at Tetris. 😉
Nice job, looks good! I think you might be able to buff the lens with a Dremel and some car polish.
How much was it sold for?
In case you haven't heard it a million and one times, let me volunteer - deoxit is phenomenal for pots and switches; significantly better than IPA.
That GameBoy is great! Would love to have this version of it. =)
Go on Amazon and search “sticky stuff remover” removes all dried up residue off screens vert very easily and also removes glue very easy too
This looks very good.
You could probably buy some polywatch to buff out the scratches on the lens
My dad had one of these when he was younger. Wish he kept it!
🔥 I Don't Really Have The Money To Buy anything lol btw Nice vid

Is there a particular polarizer screen suitable for original GB? It has screen burn.
New and Improved!
i wonder if he has the gameboy that came with pokemon special pikachu edition when you pre-ordered it
Is it not possible to use acetone or wd40 to remove the sticky residue? It works wonders removing the sticky stuff on my mountain bike, cheers
Another great video; totally random: damn you’re good looking. 🤩
Hi Elliott I have question dose it D value replacing a old Game Boy screen.
How long has it been since the last restoration video? I can't remember the last one I saw that wasn't an introduction to some wacky/obsolete device, lol
Hello im about to buy a pikachu edition gameboy light but the seller says that the button a is not working, is that an easy fix?? Thanks in advance
Why there's no replacement shell for GBLight?
Honestly I really want to be a broken Gameboy just so this guy can fix me with his handsome self lol
Time to strip down this gameboy and clean it up in a bubble bath....queue sexy music
I wonder if you could take some really fine sandpaper or polishing compound to buff out some of those scratches and issues with the finish.
Sandpaper would take away any polished surface too it and scratch it up. I wouldn’t suggest sandpaper
Hey Elliottttt❤️
You ever hear of goo gone it's a good adhesive remover
Why do you use alcohol to remove adhesive? Alcohol doesn't break it down, you might as well be using water. If you have to use that much, that should be an indication that it's not working.
Use lighter fluid. It breaks down the adhesive and makes it much, much, MUCH easier to remove. It'll likely only take a couple minutes to get it completely cleaned off.
when i showed up on this side of youtube, i reached another level
Got the gba ips mod for my birthday today but forgot to order a screwdriver

*Edit* Finished watching the video. Awesome, he didn't remove the sticker. Guess now I have to click subscribe 😅
I think GooGone would have removed the residue from the screen 100x faster than iso
I had a Gameboy like that as a kid. I lost it though...
"the house is very important" (buys more gameboys :L)
Gotta make content so he can make money.
