    John will always be my hero. He’s never been scared to do what he wanted despite it not always being trendy. Shakti was amazing to me and he can outpick most shredders.

    McLaughlin, Cobham and Hellborg do everything that is the promise and genius of jazz-fusion here. Funky, fluid, on fire. JM is one of the very few who managed to get a decent sound from a guitar synth.

    I love John and really enjoy experimentation. Clearly, he jams on the synclavier guitar but I have only one objection: it doesn't sound like a guitar. This was the big thing in the 80's and he and Metheny, and to some extent, Di Meola, embraced this I am kind of glad the phase is over. Some of this is from the 1984 Mahavishnu CD and it is solid work to be sure. Sorry to be a critic here, I just like a guitar to sound like a guitar.

      Its not a 'Synclavier guitar" . It is the Roland G-303 with a Synclavier remote controller ( small narrow black box mounted to the guitar body ) which changes that keyboard's programs and filters.The Synclavier unit sits offstage out of view. . The Roland G-303 and later 808 guitars were made in the 1980s by FujiGen in Japan for Roland's guitar synth and are very high quality guitars much sought after and extremely rare now. They are in the $2500 range if you can find one for sale. I have the G 303 with the Roland GR 300 synth unit. Same setup as Pat Methany uses. Remember JM has been playing for many decades constantly expanding horizons, Pat M not as long BUT For a guitarist to be able to further expand their sound, these guitar synths were a way to do that. btw the Roland guitars can be played 'normally ' without any synth module and are extremely capable !

      @@optimus163 Ah, thanks for the correction. I still like when a guitar sounds like a guitar but occasionally it has its charm.

      Yeah really😅 a guitar must sound as one guitar but then it was time for new experiences.

      I have no problem if the tone is similar to Keith Emerson on “Lucky Man” or “Trilogy.” However, these tone is cheesy! For arguably the greatest guitarist on the planet to go for this tone following his blistering Mahavishnu daze, is blasphemy😢

    Roland G300, it's about a half second delayed or less ? They are more interesting for Guitar players or should I say Virtuoso, saw JM and Hellborg just dueling for more than half the show in 87 or 86' Mahavishnu at the Greek LA, it was awesome😮

    • @curiouscatlabincgetsworrie7755
      @curiouscatlabincgetsworrie7755 6 місяців тому

      Yeah, but it was more like down to a few milliseconds of latency as it's known in the digital era, which is still well in the boundaries of playable even by virtuosos. Now what Roland did back then getting down to those numbers is beyond comprehension! And if John McLaughlin plays one while smiling you can rest assured it ... works! :D

    Such an amazing trio if progressive jazz fusion artists! All just diving head-first, and balls-deep into those melodic grooves. Folks ask. What is Progressive fusian? My best answer is, play what inspires you, and play what is melodic to you. Every measure, every turn-around/repeat, should have a new melodic, and structured groove, that pulls the entire song together... no matter how many beats per measure. the two main aspects are groove, and melody.

    I think he is working within the limitations of the early guitar synthesizer which did not track very well but it would have been nice to have mixed in under the synth a nice sustaining guitar sound

      You’re right, we French do not know much about music in general, and jazz in particular. Must be why a score of (black) jazzmen settled in France after WW2. Nobody really paid attention to them around here…

    • @naderzekrya5238

      @diogene2210 I didn't say the french don't know anything about music in general, which is why they sent (white) musicians to the USA before ww2. They practically invented jazz!
