Nice video. I have the Fuji version and the one thing you missed is the aperture ring is marked wrong. Where it says F4 it is actually F 5.6. Also the focus scale has a mark for f11 even though the lens does not have an F11 click. Those things aside it's a great lens and my copy behaves just like the one you reviewed.
I talked about aperture mistakes in past manual focus lens videos maaaany years ago but stopped. It seems like the Chinese manufacturers really don’t care about the aperture scales. Many, many of them are just entirely arbitrary. Max aperture, mid aperture, etc, just totally made up.
BUT, most of them have so much vignetting and poor transmission and cats eye wide open that it is a bit of an exercise in futility anyway. No one is buying these as swappable cinema lenses or precision work.
All that being said, a valid point nonetheless 😏
Its design looks a lot like the Mitakon 25mm f0.95, a lens that is terrific except for the flare control. Beautiful images, congrats.
3.5/10 for focus is a little harsh, most lens with 0.95 aperture is difficult to focus at 0.95 not only this lens.

It appears they've borrowed the styling elements from both Leica and Zeiss rangefinder lenses, but the '35' at the front of the barrel is a nice touch and original I think. It works. If only Chinese lens manufacturers would choose a lens style and stick with it across focal lengths. I think they're onto a winner with this design 🤔
The only lineup that comes to mind as consistent is the TTartisan APS-C line. Somewhat uninteresting designs, but very consistent.
Love your reivews! could you consider taking a look at the 7artisan 35mm f1.4 mk ii for apsc? I hear its the best apsc 35mm cheap manual lens but im not sure since i dont have all the other ones to compare.

Afraid I haven’t tried that one. When stopped down it’s significantly sharper than the Meike 50 1.2 I have, though
This would make a fantastic portrait lens at 70mm for my m4/3 cameras

Great video Wes. I use the Canon R system, and I was thinking of getting the Canon 35mm 1.8 but I just found out about the Brightin star, and I'm not sure for which one shoud I pick now. Any tips or recommendations to choose between them? Thanks

Great video. Question: would this lens be usable for 'talking head' or Zoom-like videos? If so, what distance would it need to be from the speaker?
We’re looking at approx a 52.5mm focal length here (full frame equivalent). That’s a reasonable range for talking head.
Mind you at f/0.95 it won’t work well for that as the subject will constantly be moving in and out of focus with normal human movement. But stopped down a bit it would be just fine.

What is your opinion on their 50mm full frame version? Do you hold it with the same esteem?
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to get ahold of that one yet. Hope to soon. The new 50 AF lens is on its way, but not Super compelling due to it only being APS-C.
I'm exclusively on full-frame (although I know I could use crop), and I don't want to lose the MP to go crop mode on my A7IV. Would this lens be something to consider as the exception to my personal rule? I would love to see your thoughts on the 50mm full frame if you do get your hands on it. Is the upcoming 50mm AF still .95f?
@K1TTENM1TTEN I know this 35 covers significantly more than an APS-C crop, hoping for the same from their two 50’s, but we’ll see soon!
