  • Brightin Star sent me their latest super bright 35mm F0.95 lens, and I found the lens to be quite impressive! It is already quite sharp wide open at F0.95, and I had plenty of fun testing this lens!

    I bought this lens a while ago and have shot events, portraits, boudoir, nature and street with it. It allows me to shoot inconspicuously in low (or no) light situations. The combination of this .95 lens and IBIS is gold. Focusing is actually quite easy. I've assigned one of the function buttons of my E-M5 mkii to enlarge the EVF image. You can select the amount (I prefer 4x or higher) of enlargement, set the aperture to .95 and focusing is a breeze thanks to the extreme shallow depth of field. Once your focus is set, you dial in the aperture you want to use and off you go!

      I‘ve worked this way a while ago, but found it quite cumbersome and came to the conclusion that this is-for me-not suitable for portraits. I don’t mind manual focusing, but electronic contacts (like Loawa does it with some lenses) helps a lot!

      For the events I am shooting, I deal with a lot of action and fast moving subjects, so AF is necessary. Otherwise, I don't mind using this lens.

      @@mendelhamoen645 Aanrader!

    I understand everyone has their preferences. I actually like the manual focus and the experience of being able to control the point of focus. However, I don't tend to shoot moving subjects that often. Anyway, you got some amazing images, and even the flared images looked really good. Keep up the good work.

    Plenty of fun with this lens I received recently. Surprisingly, in bright daylight at the beach, it is not as sharp as I expected, even stopped down. The plastic Olympus 40-150 mm produced sharper photos the same day at 40 mm. Lots of chromatic aberrations too with this 35 mm, hard to remove in post. But, the color rendition is something and highly seductive. Beside, the photos look very natural and smooth. I have to tame that lens and will use it mainly in low light. Thanks for the excellent review Robin.

    I bought this lens after watching this video. I tried it with some of my first street photography attempts - nighttime in my home town, Christmas markets - on my OM-5. A bit heavier than I expected, but still very comfortable to handle; and like other commenters here I actually enjoy the manual lens experience - at least in relaxed conditions! Image quality is great, any flaws I put down to my own inexperience.
    The only problem is that, _somehow,_ the crop factor of M4/3 slipped my mind, and there were a few moments where I wished this 35mm lens was a bit wider for the scenes I wanted to photograph! (A strange experience when, normally, I want to get tighter on wildlife) A minor complaint; I'll keep taking the lens out, but it's also made me look up the wider Laowa and Voigtlander f0.95 lenses. Of course I wouldn't complain if Brightin Star added something like that to their catalogue, either...

    Learning to track moving subjects with manual focus is in my opinion not that hard. People could do it before autofocus cameras existed (ok, they had those focusing screens) and learning to do it with an OM-1 just takes a little bit of practise. • @FelanLP
    @FelanLP Місяць тому

    I recently bought the Brightin Star and already had the 7Artisans and have to say at wide open the 7 seems to be sharper. But at least when you nail the focus, it has less abortions directly on your subject compared to the Star.
    The Star is easier to focus and resists unwanted turns due to its slightly higher turning resistance, but if you want to stop down beyond f4, you can't stop in single stops. So if you feel secure at manual focusing I would highly recommend to buy the 7Artisans alternative. It may cost a bit more (~50 bucks) but it really pays of in the long run.

    • @FelanLP
      @FelanLP 4 дні тому

      Update: The Star indeed performs way worse compared to the 7 in tems of image quality. In all aspects. I can not recommend the Star. It's a good example for buy cheap buy twice.

      Indeed. I've subsequently researched the lens mount availability, but it seems that (for Nikon) there is only amount for the 'Z' series of cameras, which is somewhat disappointing - unless I also purchase a converter to fit my DSLR. Ultimately, it would not be worth the venture.

      From what I heard, before Olympus came out with their F/1.2 PRO trio of lenses, they considered making them F/1.0 aperture. They decided against the idea because the cost, size and even the weight would have been more than most consumers would want to deal with. The size and weight go against the m4/3rds philosophy and the expensive cost meant few consumers would have bought them just to pick up 2/3 a stop more light than the F/1.2s they eventually went with.

      Panasonic Leica have lenses at f1.2. They can be pricey even on sale. The lenses are superb though and I don’t see what a series of f.95 lenses would benefit from a company financially. Also, corner sharpness can be an issue.

    • @PinnaclePete
      @PinnaclePete 7 місяців тому +4

      @@entrigueall2661 I understand the appeal. More light gathering, lower ISO numbers, less noise in the images. Plus shallower depth of field if you want it. One problem is, a F/0.95 lens on m4/3 only matches the DOF of a F/1.8 lens on a FF camera. In order to match the shallow DOF of a full frame F/1.4 , F/1.2 or a F/0.95 lens the m4/3 lens would have to be HUMONGOUS!
      Personally, I don't like seeing a portrait with one eye in focus, but the other eye, the tip of the nose and the ears - out of focus. If I use my M.Zuiko 45mm F/1.2 lens wide open at 2.73 feet, the DOF is only 2.144mm deep!

    Honestly i'm complete confused about those 0.95 lenses. The brighting star is supposed to be identical to the 7 artisans, but performs different. I use the Meike 50 0.95 and it performs different to the 7 artisans albeit beeing optical identical. Maybe they use different coatings or its just sample variation, just weird.

    My buddy has this lens, until i got hands on the *(=Laowa33mm F0.95 APO*. Would love to see that come to the Olympus, it performs as good as it looks (except for long focus ring) but other than that it beats out the Brightin Star, TTArtisan and Voigtländer. 35mm. I hope Laowa can send you one for testing! :)

      It's available on the Brightin Star UK website. Seen so much praise for it, starting with Robin's video here, that I had to jump on the 40% sale. But then my bank blocked the card payment to the merchant. 🤨 Bought it through eBay instead - slightly cheaper still, but a longer wait...
      Funny, I didn't have this problem with the 7artisans UK site. Maybe because they had UK stock?

  • @KNURKonesur
    @KNURKonesur 6 місяців тому

    It would be an amazing lens, but because of the creamy smooth bokeh, it's not for me. I don't know why so many modern photographers go for a super clean and clinical look and dislike busy bokeh lenses, saying they're harsh and distracting. They're only harsh and distracting if they're used for the wrong purposes :D In the end I'm staying with the TTartisan 35/0.95, which maybe isn't as sharp as the Britghtin Star, but has a more vintage looking bokeh which I like for portraits.

  • @antonkudris
    @antonkudris 7 місяців тому +5

    I never really cared much about sharpness, cause for me it's all about bokeh quality with such lenses. And CA. I don't see how this particular lens is any better in terms of bokeh or CA compared to the rest of the bright primes. Yet it's nice to have yet another affordable option

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  7 місяців тому +5

      The thing is - ALL other F0.95 is soft wide open, and they all produce somewhat similar looking bokeh anyway. What stands out is the sharp wide open on the Brightin Star, which was impressive considering the asking price.

    It sure is an interesting lens, but I disagree a little with you Robin on the quality of the bokeh: in some of the pictures I find the bokeh rather ‘nervous’ and not so pleasing at all. In that respect: the zuiko F1.2 pro lenses do a lot better (altough pricewise that mat not be a fair comparison). Anyway, nice to have new m43 lenses coming on the market

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  7 місяців тому

      Trust me, in those cases, F1.2 Olympus, or any "best bokeh" lenses would fare no better. They were extremely backlit, creating some harshness. I've shot enough with the Olympus F1.2 lenses.

    • @skfineshriber

      I’ve watched a lot of reviews on f0.95 or f1 lenses, and I think this is the sharpest (in the center wide open) of any I can remember. That includes some vintage legends.

    • @etiennecosnefroy6120
      @etiennecosnefroy6120 2 місяці тому

      I am not sure watching and comparing reviews is a very scientific way to make judgement on sharpness. Until I see a review that makes an actual comparison of this lens vs other comparable lenses I’ll reserve my judgement. Again I am not claiming this lens is bad and I expect it’s probably great value but my point is that lacking any proper comparison this sort of title is just meaningless click-and-bait
