Al is a talented carpenter, he is no average DIY'er. I think he's a very humble man. Building that barn alone is nuts, have friends lined up to help. lol
That is a basically a large Ikea cabinet. I think Ducks go to bed guy could do it. Don't be afraid...you learn by doing...building structures seems scary but it is pretty easy once you do it for a bit.....and an extra set of hands is a huge help in construction.
Morgan, you looked so bummed on your drive home..thinking of a new barn for yourself ..but the old new England barn you have is something that can't be replaced and with so many being torn down, you are so blessed to have one that is so big and beautiful.. although it needs some work, perhaps you can give a "shout out" to other homesteaders and such in the new england area that you need some help cleaning and starting the process of restoration...New and shiny looks great but what you have can't be beat.. btw...your vlogs quack me up..lol
I wish I lived with all of you. I take recycle old wood and take apart old buildings and refurbish all of their parts and make something new out of it I love doing this. I wish someday I could live on a farm and restore and modify the farm buildings there is so much that is so beautiful when I look at your your farms I love the way you talk to your animals they are better than humans. I love my animals they are my favourite babies in the world.
Guys, give him a break! He's a beginner at DIY and restoring his barn requires expertise. I agree that a community shout out would help but it's going to take longer than a weekend. Maybe he could sign up w/the Self Reliant Roadshow for season 2 to get an expert appraisal of what needs to be done to approach it.
I live vicariously through yours and the Lumnah Acres channel. You really seem like an honest and self-effacing guy who isn't trying to be Superman. You are honest about your abilities and shortcomings. I admire that. Al Lumnah is truly an inspiration. He can do more work in one morning than I can seem to accomplish in a month. (I'm 28 years older though...) I'm not religious, but I get that he is. He's never preachy, always upbeat and seems like a true gentleman as well as a gentle soul. All the best to you both.
It was great to see 2 of my favorite channels Collaborating together ! Al Lumnah is a top notch homesteader ! Not to mention Al is a builder hands on knowledge is a bonus in that situation !
It was nice to see Al have company today, somebody right there to see how much work he has done and who can marvel at it in person. Thanks for helping out.
I vote for not removing the old barn if it is not in the way. As your farm grows you will need the old barn for one reason or another. At this point I would just make sure the roof was in good shape with no leaks and then leave it stand for now.
Except if the old barn is unsafe. Then the price to repair vs new. It’s easy to sit at your keyboard and say ohhh keep the old barn. Then have part of the barn collapse on your food and the water hydrant. You know it won’t be the empty part that fails, not my luck anyway. I am sure it’s not your luck either. After all we are the viewer, we are not the farmer
An extra set of hands and a strong back are a blessing when you need them. I was checking Jamaica Cottages web page. They some neat kits. One was a sugar shack for boiling maple syrup. Has a coppola to vent the steam. Enjoyed the ducks and geese. Glad you were able to help.
The more you do the more you realize you can do more. Watch Al's videos , he's a great instructor He is methodical, orderly, and deliberate- never in a hurry , always moving forward. Your old barn is such a priceless example of Americana. I'm guessing whoever built it just got out there and got after it. Whatever you decide about a barn don't let doubts get in your way-you can and you will get it done ; of this I have no doubt.
Thank you for going over to Lumnah Acres and helping him with some of the heavy beems. Both of your families are blessing. God's blessing to you and yours.
I came here from Lumnah Acres. I enjoyed your video and subscribed to your channel I lived most of my life in New England now reside in Florida watching you two brings back fond memories
Not ever going to get sick of you talking about the barn. Great video. I have been watching Lumnah Acres as well. You both are such awesome people. I love watching your channels.
Came here from Lumnah Acres, thanks for helping Al with their barn. Nice ducks and geese, they both are good eating, had goose one Christmas and it was the best fowl I have ever eaten. Wish you the best with your farm and all the success you hope for.
New subscriber, here from Lumnah. Please don’t get rid of your barn. That is priceless. If you are going to build a barn like Al, get help. He’s too humble to say how smart and talented he is. He makes it look easy.
I have been a subscriber to Al's channel for a while now and he is quite skilled as a carpenter. While watching his barn progress I thought many times he should have an extra set of hands. His barn work would have been speeded up a whole lot. Thank you for being a good friend to him.
HELLO MORGAN, I CAME OVER FROM LUMNAH ACRES AND HAVE NOW SUBBED TO YOU AS WELL. I AM A NEW ENGLANDER WHO MOVED TO FLORIDA IN 1991. I DO MISS LIVING IN MY HOME STATE N.H. AND LIVING IN VERMONT BUT MY BODY CAN'T HANDLE THE COLD ANYMORE. IT WAS GOOD TO SEE YOU HELPING AL THIS MORNING. I LOOK FORWARD TO GETTING TO SEE MORE OF YOUR HOMESTEAD. HAVE A BLESSED DAY.
We've been following Lumnah Acres since before his barn build. Have to say though, that barn he has built is very cool. Those kits are really nice. My husband was impressed. It would be wonderful for you if you could get a barn raising party together over a long weekend and your barn could go up with time for a celebration BBQ after. 😁💚 I could see a small version on an urban property too. Beautiful buildings.
Thanks for helping Al @ lumnah Acres, I think you are getting the idea of maybe your own do-it-yourself barn kit and I will definitely watch you build it, I hope you do something good with that beautiful old barn you have, I hope it's still structurally sound enough to keep it, you will never get that look back when it's gone. 🇺🇸👍🇺🇸👍
At 7 minutes and 47 seconds... Very nice slide.. a matchstick frame Barnwill definitely extend those short growing seasons... I love the way these guys giggle..
Concerning your barn: 1 you have a massive sq feet . 2 you need shelter for your animals 3 is there an area on the first floor that is stable where you can partition off for storage and shelter for your ducks and geese? Having everything in one location could save you some time, I think.. You have an awesome opportunity in your location with all that diverse topography and huge amount of land! Best wishes to you and your wife! Terry from Texas
You should contact Jamaica Cottage Shop to see if they could help you make your barn more structurally stable and supply the lumber for the repairs. They also have buildings that are simpler and smaller than that post and beam barn kit.
Al from Lumnah Acres sent me here, thank you so much for taking time to visit and help Al! I am suscribing to your channel as well. It would be great if you could restore your Barn. You say you have no experience in construction, then it might be wise to have helpers! Hard work is lighter with the help of friends. Love your geese and ducks!
Such a nice surprise to see you helping out Al at lumnah acres, thanks for asking him these questions I've been curious myself as the nice wooden style DIY kits look fascinating. Best of luck with you new duck coop hopefully all goes smoothly for you!
I think in time you will regret not taking the time to refurbish your barn. There is so much more potential there than what Al has, not taking away anything from AL's building. He had to build something where you just have to visualize what you need for the future and remodel. Just a thought from someone who doesn't have nickel in that quarter . Good luck
Al sent me. Thanks for lending a hand (or 2) and getting a different perspective. I envy your big barn. It's stood a loooong time so it was made well. I hope you can give it new life but if not, it could make you quite a nice penny as a resale to some rich folks who want some genuine Americana as a vacation home. Or as repurposed lumber. I suggest you get a journey man carpenter take a look at what kind of wood and the joinery; it may surprise you.
It was good to see you at Lumnah Acres giving Al a hand. I’ve been a sub of both your channels for a while. I really enjoy both. I love your old barn & think it is worth saving & restoring. Would be a shame to lose such history. Is it possible to get it designated as a historical site & maybe get help on restoration through a historical society? Maybe get a kit like Al’s, but smaller, to replace your shed, Would be an easier project to learn on. Some of the lumber from the shed might be able to be reused on the barn renovation. There was a beautiful, huge barn on the way to my grandmother’s house. The last time I was up that way, it had been torn down. It broke my heart. Of course, you have to do what is best for you. Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🇨🇱
I think if the Lumnahs are not that far from y'all y'all should go there quite often Al is a excellent Carpenter and you could learn a lot from him we/I love the big barn on your property and it would really be simple to tighten up/fix if I was near you I'd be coming over to fix it just so you don't put it in the ground keep it friend its beautiful thumbs up and so glad you know Al
Yeah I know what you mean, I'm building a workshop right now and the theme music to This Old House is constantly getting into my head. Must be a New England thing.
Great video. I’ve watched Lumnah Acres for sometime now. He has a great channel. Like seeing you let them all let out in the morning, such a cute rush lots of quacks & honks lol
Two of my favorite farmers in one video l loved it. Maybe one day as your farm gets bigger you'll get a barn kit to build . God bless you and your family hope you have a great rest of the week.
I also came over from Lumnah Acres. I would love to see you restore your old barn, even if you feel the need to build a more modern one. Either way I'll be watching.
I'm coming in from Lumnah Acres. Love what You guys are doing. I'm now a subscriber to Gold Shaw Farm also. Btw, I love the fact I can get a coffee mug to watch the show while drinking my fav brew in the morning.
Yes, buy a kit so we can watch you build it...I plan on doing that and can learn from your mistakes and suffering....I have no problem learning from other peoples mistakes (I know that sounds somewhat mean but its true). And yes, the metal barns are not so pleasing to the eye but they are much more fire resistant and where our land is metal is popular (its cheaper too). You can drees up the metal with faux wood pieces and a stone wainscoting....but the wood is pretty.
Al Lumnah had experience building. If you have help, I would say,ok...But I have watched Al build that barn....it scared me.I don't like Hights. But,in the end,you make your own mind. Good video.
As always Morgan I LOVE your sense of humor!! So refreshing to hear you say, "RELEASE THE QUACKENS"!! Quacks me up everytime I hear it! Never gets old! Not alot of channels "showcase" their quirky side when it comes to homesteading so it helps to set your channel apart! Ok on to getting together with Al and checking out that beautiful rough-sawn lumber wood barn he's been making by himself, I think was a fantastic idea!! Seeing something in person really is hands down better than just looking at a screen huh?!? Maybe you should go on another "field trip" to the place where he got his barn kit through!! Again seeing something in person, before biting the bullet, might help you decide too if you want to go that route, what style you want, different add-ons you want to 100% include/exclude etc Fantastic thing to help you plan for in the near/distant future! I would LOVE to see you restore your old out buildings but that is a project for a professional or at least someone with a crap ton of experience to do it correctly, up to code, and someone who has lots of help!!!! With how brutal your seasons are up there in New England, reminds me of where my sister lives north of Fairbanks Alaska, that you guys have a very short window of opportunity to build/reconstruct before the next God-Awful storm comes through that you really are crunched for time in the summertime! Yes it would go so much quicker if you had a ton of help but if you didn't have qualified people working with you, like Al has, on a complete old old barn restoration it could really bite you in the butt in the long run! Not saying it can't be done with time....but as I already stated, you guys seem to always be fighting Mother Nature every summer to get as much done before fall/winter kicks you in the nuts! I think starting your beginning "building experience" with regards to building duck houses/coop style is way different (night/day), than building/rebuilding a beautiful old historic-type/style barn and do it justice in order to hopefully be passed on to your children one day!!! Not too mention it may harm you (physically, financially, but also emotionally) if it becomes a bigger burden than when you started! I think too often we dive head first into a project without truly thinking the whole process through just so we get the instant gratification and if something goes wrong we become so overwhelmed that we start to self-doubt our worth with regards to building something! Instead why not start with a post and beam kit like Al's so you can get that marvelous feeling of "I built this with my own two hands" whenever you look at the completed structure!! Then if down the road, when you are more confident in your building skills, (yrs down the road), financially ready for a very expensive rebuild, and have lots of recruited qualified helpers for such a huge project, you can attempt to take on a shed restoration prior to diving head first into that huge barn restoration!!! We all want to see you succeed in all your endeavors (building your homestead into a functioning farm, duck & geese farming/business, growing your own food (veggies, fruits, herbs, meat, etc), and eventually physically building your homestead into your dream property structurally home, outbuildings etc and not feel defeated because what you thought you could do ends up in a disaster physically, financially, and emotionally!! Set yourself and family up for success not failure right? That's the goal isn't it? Anyways Morgan you do what you think is best for you, your family, and your legacy today, tomorrow, and always! I can't wait to continue to watch you grow your skills, your family, your food, and your business as I have been doing since you had like 5k followers now look where you are today! Keep up the hard work, your successes, and of course your great sense of humor! I'd hate to see your jokes/playfulness turn upside down into frustration, pain and self-defeat because your build/rebuild ended knocking you down in more ways then one!!! Many of God's blessings Morgan to you, your family, your animals, your homestead and your business!!! Rest assured I will be cheering you on all the way across the US, in the beautiful green Pacific Northwest, Washington state!!! Born, raised, and will always live right here in this stunning state!!!
Came over from Al's channel. I think you would do well to buy a barn kit and take your time to build it. Laying out the foundation to start off right. Al certainly knows what he is doing and I am sure could walk you through it. Then you could take apart your old buildings and sell the wood or keep it for future projects, or do some of both. I think it is a great solution. Just subbed to your channel.
Hello I’m new here. Mr. Washington part time farmer guy. Stick framing VS a kit is definitely cheaper. However if you’re not carpenter savvy I get it. However depending on the fate of your big red barn. There is enough wood there to slowly dismantle and use the wood for 10 outdoor buildings on your property. There is definitely a right way to do it without getting hurt.
May I suggest a scythe for the grass cutting. That way you can keep more of the grass cut low and maybe keep the quakins closer to home. Also, check local contractors and see if anyone might be interested in the old barnwood? You might be able to fund a project or two with that extra $$$. Those NYC folks love those old barn wood / timber frame structures... God Bless.
We built a barn when I was 14. My father, my brother, an ex student of my father's, and myself. My father was a chemistry professor at a small engineering college in West Virginia, he designed the barn and put in a safety factor of 2½. Then he handed it to the civil engineering professor and asked him to look at the plans. He put in another safety factor of 2. By the time that barn went up Daddy could have parked a train engine upstairs in the hay loft.
Gary, it was a pleasure meeting you(well kinda sorta). Being from Cali its different. I love the farms of yours and Als. Ive subscribed to your vlog as well. Keep going with your farm, Im going to enjoy watching both of you and how you both grow your farms.
You just need to spend some time building things with friends like you did here and before you know it you realize it's not that hard. By helping with a few projects you'll learn some tricks to make it easier and faster and better quality. The first building I built with my 2 brothers and dad was a 10x20 shed. The next thing we built was a 24x32 3 car garage for my brother we started Saturday morning and had it framed, sheeted and started shingling Monday morning. We did a bunch of garages from scratch not a kit and together a 36x28 goes up framed and sheeted in a weekend. You can do it so help friends and when the time comes the friends can help you that's how communities were built back when.
Hi, Morgan. Helping Al get started with phase 2 of the barn project not only helped him out... it allowed you to see, firsthand, what working with a precut kit will be; should you decide to go that route with your barn project! Enjoyed seeing the camaraderie between GOLD SHAW FARM and LUMNAH ACRES! Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA -- 7/11/2019.
My wife and I start out our mornings watching Lumnah Acres while eating breakfast - very cool to see you make a cameo. I told Al he should've got you over there last week when he was up on the roof peak - lol. Goose/duck question - are their flight feathers clipped or do they just hang around because you raised them? Great channel and hope the Barnwood Builders angle works out for you.
I've been watching your channel a few videos now before this one and I like how you work with you geese and ducks and since I see you are a friend of one of my favorite UA-cam channel Lumnah Acres I'm a new sub..😊 I love to see how you guys are authentics.. Love from 🇵🇷 P.R.♥️🎉🎉💪💪💪😆
OMG This is awesome...how amazing because I was going to ask you if you knew of this guy Al from Lumnah acrea, lol...and you do!!! This is great, I love seeing neighborly homies!
Well, I adored your video much more than the ones from Al. Seems he likes to show much more detail, (hammering, cutting, etc) so I ended up skipping through most of his build. Even the fact that you add music makes your video more enjoyable. Thanks for sharing your work and experience.
Thanks for coming over and helping with the BARN!
Looks good mate I haven’t watched since you levelled the pad for the barn, I was waiting to binge watch from start to finish.
I enjoyed that moment when you stood back and admired your handy work
what are you planning on treating the wood with?
So impressed with that Barn build 👌. Started watching when he had skunks in new yolk city. Hopefully it will help you with your projects 😊😁
How does the camera move when your not there moving it yourself?
Al is a talented carpenter, he is no average DIY'er. I think he's a very humble man. Building that barn alone is nuts, have friends lined up to help. lol

Absolutely Beautiful Goose operation :) Love what you doing with those guys. Fun that you and Al got to hang out.

Dad, is this the guy that tells "all ducks go to bed?"
Yes it is, sweetie.
Ah. I like him.
So do I.
So sweet! Wonderful comment!
All your birds are looking good! Thanks for
Taking us over to visit Al.
Thank you Morgan for helping Al with the barn build!
I vote for not removing the old barn if it is not in the way. As your farm grows you will need the old barn for one reason or another. At this point I would just make sure the roof was in good shape with no leaks and then leave it stand for now.
That’s probably what I’d do...unless I really needed the money from selling the wood.
I agree. It is always good to have extra buildings. You never know what lurks in the future.
Except if the old barn is unsafe. Then the price to repair vs new. It’s easy to sit at your keyboard and say ohhh keep the old barn. Don’t doubt your self. You can do it. The power in positive thought is amazing. And always remember to enjoy the journey
And we all have that positive power rooting for you.
Al has it together. Fix your barn, don't get rid of it.
An extra set of hands and a strong back are a blessing when you need them. I was checking Jamaica Cottages web page. They some neat kits. One was a sugar shack for boiling maple syrup. Has a coppola to vent the steam. Enjoyed the ducks and geese. Glad you were able to help.

It's all good. I think you doing great!!
I love your old barn, but it does really help to have buildings that work for you. You and Al work well together.
I wish you a happy life
Nice to see you at Lumnah Acres. We are big fans of Al and love ducks!

It's definitely a big project he's undertaking. It's an achievement for sure.

Yeah Lumnah Acres is one of my favorite channels.
Thank you for demonstrating how to be a good neighbor. Not everybody masters that life lesson. SUbscribed!
Lumnah Acres sent me here. Very nice farm . . love the Ducks and Geese

Shalom! Wow I am impressed...the new install of the barn looks fantastic Thank you all for sharing. Blessings.
Please keep the old barn. It would be a great subject for more videos.
You are progressively looking alot healthier since I've been watching your videos a year ago. All the best
Two of my favs together.

It's been super impressive to see Al be able to raise a barn by himself
I would dearly love to spend a few with Alan over at the Acres myself. Good job.
They are building another barn - a fun series.

Very good interview see you in the morning.👋🏿👋🏿👋🏿
Didn't know you knew each other, my two favourite farmTubers together! Good news
Came over from Lumnah. Welcome to the neighborhood!
Go for it dude. Build your own stuff! That kit looks awesome.
Yeah I know what you mean, I'm building a workshop right now and the theme music to This Old House is constantly getting into my head. Must be a New England thing.
Came over from Lumnah Acres. Love the Ducks and Geese
Great video. I’ve watched Lumnah Acres for sometime now. He has a great channel. Like seeing you let them all let out in the morning, such a cute rush lots of quacks & honks lol
You have lost quite a bit of weight. Very proud of you. Keep up the good work.
Either way I'll be watching.
what a throw back this came up in my recommended for some reason so i rewatched it lol ur famrs come a long way
Ha! I haven’t watched that one in a long time. Thanks for watching!
It was cool to see lumnah acres from your point of view 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great to see that you guys are representing New England on the ever growing you-tube community............good stuff.
Hi Mason .... thanks for helping Al with the barn.. your channel looks cool.
Hi Al from Lumnah acres sent us over to your channel.
Thank you for helping out your buddy Al on the barn. I subscribed to you as well! 🌼
Love their videos too! Thanks for sharing
Love seeing your visit!
I think it take a special person to build that barn the way Al did.
It sure does!
I think the ducks are so neat good luck God bless
I've been watching your channel a few videos now before this one and I like how you work with you geese and ducks and since I see you are a friend of one of my favorite UA-cam channel Lumnah Acres I'm a new sub..😊 I love to see how you guys are authentics.. Love from 🇵🇷 P.R.♥️🎉🎉💪💪💪😆
OMG This is awesome...how amazing because I was going to ask you if you knew of this guy Al from Lumnah acrea, lol...and you do!!! This is great, I love seeing neighborly homies!
Your friend from Basra Iraq
Well, I adored your video much more than the ones from Al. Seems he likes to show much more detail, (hammering, cutting, etc) so I ended up skipping through most of his build. Even the fact that you add music makes your video more enjoyable. Thanks for sharing your work and experience.
