Thank you for pointing out the bay leaves. We use them in our cupboards. The Bay Laurel tree is fairly common around here. When we need fresh leaves, we take a short road trip to get some. Then the dried out leaves go in our kitchen trash can to help keep it smelling fresh. Gotta love nature, always a solution to each problem.
Bay leaves would never get old in MY house! I use them every week. 😻 It’s terrific in tomato dishes, soups, roasts, you name it! Glad to hear bugs don’t like them. And yeah, I always freeze my rice and flour after I bring them home from the store. Good tips!
Blessings! It's great that you brought this up because sometimes people forget to check for the pests which can lead to really big problems if left unchecked. I usually use 2 parts lemon juice to 1 part white vinegar & use that to spray not only for the pesky critters but also because it's a good solution for cleaning & disinfecting. God's Blessings to everyone!
My neighbor has a bay plant, and I "harvested" (with permission) a LOT of bay leaves and dried them. I'll be strewing them around my pantry and other shelves, hoping they will keep out the critters!
Hi Alaskagranny I like the spray lemon juice idea I've got lemons all over the place where I live 4 lb sugar package from the store always gets ants why don't they make those ant proof? Of course I put sugar in jars
Bay leaves are not expensive and they work wonders for pests, good in food too. Miss my tree I had when I lived in Louisiana. Now I buy them from Amazon. Great advice
As you suggest, I always freeze flour, corn meal, oatmeal, rice, etc. for 3 days (to kill any insect eggs) as soon as I get it home from the store. Then I bring it back to room temperature and vacuum seal it in large Ball canning jars using my FoodSaver attachment. No more finding teeny-tiny itty-bitty crawly things in the bag when I need to make a recipe. (More often than not, those bugs hatch from eggs that are already in the food when it leaves the factory and not from bugs that crawled in after you put the food in your pantry.) Although I don't freeze them first, I also vacuum seal sugar, crackers, cereal, cookies, etc. in large Ball jars. An added advantage is that I can easily see when something is running low.
You know those metal popcorn tins we always get at Christmas? I saved one of those and put all my extra spices and meat rubs in & put it on my basement pantry shelf. They come with a good tight lid.
I wish there were large vacuum containers like those cheap plastic ones we buy, but with a rubber seal and "pumpable". Thanks for the tip! Love the idea of using cinnamon! You always find something new and awesome to teach us!
Thank you for all of these tips!.. I am just coming out the other side of a 'pest disaster'.. Those boxes of packaged flavored oatmeal packs!.. yep in the box itself! When I noticed 'critters' for the first time Ever I started opening unopened boxes and there they were! So from now on I'll open those boxes and put the packs into a plastic container with a good sealing lid or in jars... I will also incorporate everything you taught us on this video as well...
I planted spearmint in the area around where I have chicken feed to deter pests- working great. I think I should plant some mint/rosemary near doorways of the house too. I really want a Laurel tree. Excellent video!
Love your video, I almost skipped it but thought twice. For 3.10 mins (?), I got so much information, direct to the point, no waste of yours or my time. I also like that it's all natural and home remedy solutions. Thanks again and God bless you.
Wow, what great tips! Just recently found your channel and have really been enjoying your programs and have started my stockpile of food and water! Thank you from Texas 🇨🇱
Great tips.I dont have issue but did have bugs inside an unopened bag of soup mix I had bought from my local grocer that really surprised me.Never know what ur bringing home.
Bay leaves work great! I have been using them for many years. Also, peppermint oil on cotton balls or even peppermint tea bags help keep away mice. My brother stores bags of dog food in his garage and sprinkles peppermint oil around them and at the doors. He lives in the country and has never had mice or any other critter.
I have a problem with bugs when I have organic grains, it seems, I don't know what the little bugs are but they like to hide, I got a spray can of raid that I spray before putting down the kitchen rug rag runners in front of my kitchen cabinets, seems to work best for me.
@@Saudade417 yes… most bags come with a little Device you can use to disperse the powder… you will not want to get it into your eyes, and I use a cloth mask similar to the pandemic ones… any cheap one will do. Diamatacearth, though in powder form, has sharp little edges. If you have pets, you may not want them to step in it…
Mix a bit of vinegar and a slice of tomato or some banana slices, cover with plastic wrap, rubber band the rim and poke tiny holes. They'll find the way in, but hopefully not out.
Mint is also great from keeping ants out of your house, I grow three different types. I also use crunched Cayenne pepper, along the edge all around on the outside! Fun fact, Cayenne pepper is also a great blood Clotter, for bleeding wounds!
Looks like bay leaves may work for me since it’s inside my bird bag when I order it, however does it actually kill the bugs because that’s what I need. But I don’t want to put any chemicals inside my bird food bag as clearly my bird needs to eat it after Any ideas that you can give me that would help me thank you so much for your time
It's my understanding it works like citronella for mosquitoes. They don't like the smell, or it covers up the smell of what they do want, so works as a repellent.
I didn’t know you had to freeze rice and beans until I was partway through my beginner prepping process. Is it too late or should I take them out of the mason jars and freeze them then let them dry out and then re-jar them?
How awful!!! I would vacuum everything again, deep into nooks and crevices. Remove everything, floor mats, empty glove box, trunk, everything. Put down a few of the sticky bug traps, maybe a bait trap so they carry it wherever they are nesting and die. Wipe down everywhere with white vinegar. Repeat. Maybe try some of the sprays designed to get rid of lice. If it was winter, you could give the car a deep freeze outside! Please keep me posted what works.
@@AlaskaGranny Thank you for such a quick response! You are amazing. I just found out a bag of old birdseed in my trunk is what they were attracted to. I’m glad I found the source. I will still come back to report my results.
@@Zombiecupcake157 So glad you found the source. How unfortunate, try to feed the birds, invite critters into the car! We take down bird feeders in spring in Alaska when bears wake up, bears love bird seed, and the aroma draws them.
Did you find any beetles orothe insects at your home, kitchen or bathroom? Ask me who is it. Best entomological greetings from Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.
Those smelly beetles that comes in with food are soo nasty. You can smell them a mile away, I doubt they would be any good if they taste like they smell🤢

You can buy Bay leaves in the ethnic aisle, here they’re 99 cents for a good size bag. My pantry smells like Bay leaves 😁
Thanks thT’s what I need now.
Four other things that work are mint, lemon grass lavender and catnip. Catnip also repels mice.

This is why I store my cigars and scotch properly. You really have to look out for those big two legged pests wanting to drink/smoke up your preps!
🤣😆🤣😆
LOL
Great Anti-Critter tips. 🐜
Don't want any of them. 🤨
TFS, & take care everybody. ❤🙂🐶
Great tips, o also use cinnamon in my garden and cayenne pepper to keep some of the bugs that enjoy a good leafy meal away
I've put out a couple of bay leaves in my pantry area and also put some in my backup storage area.

Great tip, using cinnamon to keep ants out. I like that! Nontoxic pesticide! TFS!
Good info...thanks for sharing! 👍 Blessings to you and your family 🙏
Thank u, beautiful, beautiful tips.
🙏🙏🙏
I get bay leaves at our bulk food place and cheap. They keep the moths away. But I'll have to try the cinnamon for ants.
Good tips , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Great suggestions and information. Thank you AG!
Thanks, Granny!
Getting Bay leaves today! Thanks 😁
I will be scattering bay leaves around my shelves! Great idea!
She was so Adorable! I love it!
I was told chalk would keep ants away, that they wouldn't cross a chalk line.
it does.
Food grade diametacious earth. Kills the bugs, kills the eggs.
Going to buy some today
How do you use it? Sprinkle it in your pantry?

It actually kills parasites in animals AND humans ...
Sprinkle on food.
Thanks again. You are a wealth of practical information.
Thank you Alaska Granny! Grabbing my cinnamon right now! Have a blessed evening :)
Very helpful info! Thanks 👍
Thank you for the great ideas. I do want to mention that cinnamon will stain many materials inside cupboards or some materials outside.
Good point!
Anyone else having a fruit fly problem this year? I’ve cleaned and done pest control to no end and can’t get rid of them.

Can you freeze the rice and pasta after it has been sealed in canning jars?
Yes.
Thank you very helpful. ❤
You're welcome 😊
Great information.
Fabulous bracelet 😉
I always use bayleaves
Wonderful Thank you dear!
Thank you Alaska Granny.?😊
Very nice video!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks again AG

If they are already in jars, and no problems, I would leave them alone.
Tape or seal around the lids for long term storage.
Great ideas !
Thank you 😊
is pasta in unopened plastic ( orginal pacakging safe ) or can they enter ?
They chewed thru mine. The plastic pasta bags! 🥺😭😭😭😭😭
Great video. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Good Info Here. Thanks

I have a weevil infestation in my car!!! I’m so embarrassed. I’ve cleaned my car, vacuumed and used cloves and bay leaves. PLEASE help!

Isn’t half vinegar with half water kills mold too ?
Yes.
Keep all my rice in my freezer
Vinegar does not work

👍
They were in my cheerios
Yuck!
I don't know why people are so concerned about bugs in their food. Bugs and insects are a delicacy in countries like Thailand and the Philippines 😀!
