    Hi again and thanks for this video. I still struggle with my o2 test. I have a tpms light on. Can it be the reason not passing the test?

      Not the tpms light no affect on the readiness monitors.

    For nissan the dealer had to update ECM software. This made the o2 sensor show ready which we drove hundreds of miles with the drive cycles. So again ECM software update 👍

    This may not work for everyone but it worked for me . After trying everything for 2 weeks I realized my O2 monitors had gone to sleep and needed to be woken up so I disconnected both O2 sensors and started the engine then waited for the check engine light to come on which it did in about 30 seconds , then I re-connected the sensors and used my tool to erase the code and drove a couple of days (maybe 5 normal drive cycles) and the O2 monitor finally set .

      @@RANDOMFIX 2006 chevy Suburban . I used this trick for my last smog check 2 years ago and again just this week . I have a recurring evap code (P4055 large leak ) and every time it comes back all my monitors are set but I also have a pending code so for several months I've either had monitors not ready or a pending code . By unplugging and then reconnecting the 02 sensor I expedited the 02 monitor to set before the evap code came back .

    Mercedes CLK430, just went through this smog hell. Watched all the videos and read all the good tips but the O2 sensor problem continued even after changing all the sensors. 2500 miles of driving around like a fool i finally gave up and took it to a shop with a dyno where they tried for 3 days without success till another mechanic noticed my brake lights were on while the drive cycle was being performed. They replaced the brake light switch($30 part), reset the computer and 50 miles later my headache was over. So i guess the computer was registering that i was on my brake all the time while performing the drive cycles.

      Wow, this first I'm heard about a brake light switch causing such a big delay but I can see how this would make it impossible to get your car ready for amog. _Randomfix

      @A I had no codes or check engine lights before or after changing the o2 sensors, just the brake light switch cancelling the drive cycle test. And i also tried the recommended product before changing the sensors.

      Having a similar issue. No check engine light. At about 800 - 1000 miles right now. OBD reader from AutoZone says something about my Anti break system (ABS). But it also said my brake fluid is low and it’s completely full

I’m having the same issue as well, I brought the car to get a smog and 2nd o2 sensor is not rdy, I have put over 100miles and it is still not rdy, I’ve done the drive cycles online as best as I can and I don’t have a check engine light on or mil light.

    I own a 2011 Toyota RAV4 . I recently disconnected the battery to clean the terminals . When I went for emissions testing it wouldn't pass due to catalyst and oxygen monitor not ready . I have driven over 100 miles on the highway and tried different drive cycles and when I hook up the OBD 2 scanner both monitors are still incomplete . Any suggestions on how to get the monitors in the ready mode so I can pass the emissions testing

    I want to get an emissions test and I got this as not ready So I failed because I had the evap one too... So there are two markers not ready well anyway I got a scan tool from Walmart and I checked around the engine bay and saw one hose for the vacuum to the intake manifold wasn't connected properly it must've popped off so I went to AutoZone and got a new vacuum line for 4 dollars... I always wanted to replace all the hoses for the vacuum system anyway I know it goes to a butterfly valve that opens and shuts some type of thing for the intake manifold anyway I replaced the hose and my O2 sensor is completely ready now your problem could just be that something like that check your vacuum lines I also replace the air filter it wasn't that bad but I did it anyway I also make sure all the connections were connected but they were fine had to be the Vacuum line... So yeah you could have a leak there... Because 10 minutes after I did that It was on right away and ready so tomorrow I'll go get my emissions test even though I don't have an even though the evap is not ready i'll pass just fine... But at least it's finished and my registration will be paid because otherwise I can't pay my registration until the test is done... But yeah could be simple as checking your vacuum lines make sure they're correctly attached... I'll be replacing the rest of the lines because they're hard as a rock they're supposed to be a little bit flexible you know what I mean after I get the tests maybe in a couple weeks I'll do them all... And I'll get to the bottom of the evap leak Probably a purge solenoid valve or disconnected hose underneath the car I haven't really looked at but I would smell gasoline but I don't ... I know in the engine bay I smelt it for a while but not anymore

    Hello sir, I have a rather odd issue with my 01 DeVille. I bought the car in march 01 and had to go through emissions and it passed no problem. I had to take it again this year and failed or was rejected because catalyst and o2 sensor monitors weren't ready.I let it idle for 2 1/2 minutes with a/c on high as long as having the rear defog on. That didn't do anything except make the evap monitor not ready so today I drove it to the store with the air on max and rear defog on and when I got home, I help the RPM to like 3000 or so RPM, now none of the monitors are ready. I have no engine codes but I did have a problem with it last summer. The car suddenly started running like crap and got horrible gas mileage P0300. I finally tracked that down to a defective coil pack on bank 2 so I replaced it and ran like a charm. That was he only time I ever cleared and codes. Any advice where to turn next?

      @@RANDOMFIX Oh, I forgot to add that this was fixed about 3-4 months ago and I didn't even have to clear the codes, the engine light turned off on its own but cleared it anyway. I am using ScanXL Pro on a laptop now and something seems fishy with an o2 sensor but not sure. I will see what happens with the drive cycle. I will see if I can get a screen shot.

    I had the O2S & HTR codes on my ECK test says the monitor not ready so I replaced all four sensors but I still get the same thing, no ck eng. light on or any codes truck runs good drove it 200 mi. tried the catcleaner in the tank still have the flashing red codes on scanner had it checked by a Ford mechanic it says the sensors are working good doing what they are suppose to do they should have cleared out by now running out of ideas

    My emissions was rejected because of the O2 sensor monitor not ready and I believe it is because I just bought the car on July 28th on July 29th which was my birthday I must say I was cleaning the car I have the doors open for quite some time cuz doing a lot of cleaning and the car died so I had to manually jump it with my portable jumper I was told to drive the car for a week and go back

    I have a Kia 2012 Sorento . Still having issues with my oxygen sensor saying incomplete. Should I try the cat clean ? I have no check engine light . The drive cycle for this seems really complicated

      For your kia, do the following, make sure your battery is perfect. ( less than ideal batteries will keep the o2 monitor from setting, let me know if you don't understand this.) and let it warm for a 15 minutes and drive around town in stop and go traffic, keeps around 25 to 45 mphs. Let me know what happens.

    2005 escalade v8 taking over 50 miles to reset heater 02 snr monitor, ir has 2 front and 2 rear 02 sensors. my scann tool says the draw 1 amp each at 02 heater, any idea? i wonder if i should check the amp draw w my osciloscope

    I had this pesky problem with my 2012 Nissan Rogue. I finally took it to a mechanic asked them to "Complete the drive cycle" for me then smog it. My car passed and I picked it up in 3 hours.

    I have a 2008 Mazda Miata MX-5 and the Oxygen Sensor is not passing..the gentlemen told me to drive 70 miles and come back. I drove the miles, came back, and it still has not passed. He told me to keep driving but I have a feeling something else is wrong ...but I dont know what to do!

      @Henny3773 if the fuel doesn’t get ready within minutes you need do a little research about your vehicle. I just had this happen on my 2014 dodge caravan where the fuel monitor was getting ready as well. Watch the video I sent you and let me know if you figure it out but I dropped lots of hints in the video on possible causes.

    Hope this cat a clean helps! I’ve got an 06 wrx and have driven over 350 miles. Last reset I did over 120 miles and o2 hasn’t been ready. Cleaned the MAF, Throttle Body, cleaned connectors and made sure o2 sensors were plugged in tight.

      @@KollynJ update: the issue for the o2 not setting was the o2 sensor. Once I replaced it, the car had set that monitor within a few miles.

    I have a 2017 benz c300. It has a downpipe with no CEL after putting it on. Ive driven it for over 500+ miles and no CEL. I went to a shop to do my inspection and i failed with
    Readiness: Fail
    Monitor Catalyst: Not Ready
    Monitor O2: Not Ready.
    I was told by the shop that i need to drive it for an hour or two over 60mpb to have it activated then come back. But ive driven the car for 500+ miles, shouldnt that have gotten it ready?
    Someone please help

    I had my BMW x5 35 D Throttle Body replaced and there is no more codes and drove about 130 miles but still have cat, o2s ,hrt,egr NOT READY. should I just keep driving the car? or might have problem? I do not have any pending code so far .. Any help? Thanks a lot !

      If your bmw is 2010 and never and you have a permanent code than needs to be cleared by 15 warm cycles ( warm + 10 minute drive) and 200 miles. This is known as mode 10 data, I will make a video covering this later this month. With that said I have a bmw specific video on setting all of your bmw drive cycle.       @@RANDOMFIX Thanks for quick response! I had code about 3k miles ago but I added the blue fluid and reset it. I think code was about exigent sensor but about 500 miles after reset I got engine light which I ignored until last week as I need a smoke check. When tested the throttle codes were up but nothing about oxi sensor . Mechanic who replaced throttle body told me if code doesn’t come back then it cleaned up it self .. I will check your videos and will drive more.

      That should good, I would highly suggest you get your mechanic to scan for permanent code, the are regular dtc, pending dtc, and permanent. Often times you can't pull these permanent dtc using a cheap $30 scantool. You need a better tool. You can find a good one under $200. The reason I am saying is because your o2 heater monitor should be getting ready with 10 to15 minutes during idle after the permanent code have truly cleared. I hope that helps 🙏 🙂

I might give some more driving hopefully it will clear up.. I checked your video about drive cycles so I might try it as well because I did not drive that way much.. mostly 65 mph or 35 - 40 stop and go city

      It works only for marginal catalysts. The tea fix is to replace the whole catalysts which can be super expensive in a place like California.

    What's unfortunate is that the people like myself that can't get it to work can never do so. 4 sensors and parts later with hundreds of miles and I can't get my O₂ sensor to become ready and thus, my Catalytic sensor can't get ready either. I may have to get rid of the car for such a stupid reason as no one can't seem to help.

      Sorry, to hear your troubles with o2 sensors. I'm not sure why but cleaning the throttle body really helps with getting O2 sensors ready. After you get your 02 sensors ready your catalyst will get ready. Also please make sure you use oem 02 sensors. Best of luck and let me know how it goes.     The dealer is telling me that the Rear oxygen censor is bad on my car and that is why the MIL light is on in my car. The manual states that it is a indicator of the emissions has a malfunction. But the dealer is saying that it is not a emissions problem. Is this true? I have a 2016 INFINITI QX60.

      Depending on the mileage of the vehicle I personally feel this is an emission part just like a turbo. California emission warranty 7 years/ 70k miles and federal is 8 year / 80k miles normally.

    Hi, my 09 Altima still hasn't clear the "O2 Sensor HTR" monitor, can you tell me which sensor would that be, the Downstream or Upstream? BTW, I had a cylinder 2 missfire CEL but I replaced both, coil pack and sparkplug and and the light it's off after reseting it, did a couple of drive cycles but the o2 sensor htr won't clear. Suspecting the sensor needs to be either clearn or replaced provided I know which exact sensor needs attention. your help would be appreciated. Thanks!

      Other than making sure your battery idle and not just barely starting the vehicle I would check the connectors and wiring. You either need to hook it up to a scan tool to diagnose the issue or take a stab in dark and go with that upstream oxygen sensor replacement with exact own sensor. There are additives for o2 sensor like cataclean but I would not try those because of your is o2 sensor heater monitor and no the o2 monitor, correct?

      @@RANDOMFIX To clarify, when checking the OBD2 I/M Readiness "This Drive Cycle" it shows "Oxygen Sens HRT" as not copleted (INC) the "Oxygen Sens Monitor" however, it's fine and shows OK as passing. BTW I do warm up the car on a cold start before doing the cycle as you indicated in the vid.

      Check the drive monitor since last cleared, for the o2 and heater monitor just let idle this time for 15 minutes. If the o2 monitor is still not set drive around town for 10 to 15 minutes at speeds of 25 to 45. Stop and go situations.

      @@RANDOMFIX Yeah, I checked the "since last cleared" and shows only the "Oxygen Sensor HRT" as not compled as well. I'll try driving the car as you indicated and see what happens. In case it doesn't work, most like I would need to replace the sensor, but the question is, would it be the one on the driver side, the one easly reacheable from top or the one under the car before the cat. Also, do you recomend I use the catclearner before i replace it?

      This not a way around however if you fixed your the cause of a check engine light or the check engine light does turn back on for a few miles then this would set all your drive monitors also known as inspection monitors (I/m monitors) so you pass a obd2 readiness test.     I am in California, I have a 96 nissan altima (Auto) bought in Arizona (2 Catlytic convertors, 1 near engine, 1 after flex pipe). No code, but CAT + O2 sensor not ready after driving for over 200-300 miles over 2 weeks, after LAST reset (battery reconnect, and flex pipe change) over 2 weeks ago. Upstream O2 sensor (near engine): tested working (use flame and measure voltage change. See 0.8-0.9 volt when hot). Down stream O2 is newly bought and installed. Noticed, CAT near engine has little honeycomb damage. CAT after flex pipe (downstream) has minor honeycomb damage, and hole is not 100% perfect, may be 10% clog. When running car hot, measured temperature of down stream CAT, before / after is about 100 degree difference, down stream CAT works.
    The car has newly changed flex pipe 2 weeks ago due to exhause leak, and has no exhaust leak to my best knowledge. Engine section has no leak (oil, vacuum), Numerous cleaning are done before change flex pipe to get rid of CAT + O2 not ready issue, such as seafoam. Batter is about 2-3 years old and voltage is normal. Downstream CAT was taken down and put in soup overnight 2 times (tried to clean).
    I've tried driving pattern recommeneded by Nissan official document in last 2 weeks. It's driving pattern is not very general as seen in many post. No success after 5, 6 try.
    Upstream CAT (near engine) was not tested for temerature difference, as I am not sure how to test it.
    Before changing flex pipe, CAT + O2 not ready (no code) issue existed few months ago. I've attempted to get rid of it by clearning, such as MASS sensor.
    The car idle is not 100% smooth, but ok. The car has no otherr know obvious issue.
    What should I to get rid of at least 1 of CAT + O2 not ready issue? Thank you for help and advise.

      HL, I've been thinking about your dilemma, as long as your 02 sensor are oem and working this may help you. Make sure you have a proper connection with no resistance on the 02 sensor plug contacts. Sorry I didn't respond over the last few days. Here are my two suggestions.
      The first is going to sound a little odd. Take the vehicle for a short drive to warm it up (5 miles) then park and hold your engine RPM at 3k for 3 minutes (make sure you have right oil, oil level, and becare not to overheat your engine). This technique is good for early obd2 vehicles.
      The second option is to go for a long long drive 100+ at a constant speed, try with the cruise control and cruise control off. You need to get you CATS super hot
      Now you may be asking yourself will my advice about first two suggestion work? ? Honestly, you should focus on getting the 02 monitors ready first. I've found over the years when the 02 monitors aren't getting ready the throttle body needs cleaning. I'm not sure why this is but this what I've found. >>ua-cam.com/video/hsGNYdeZLec/v-deo.html

      I want to make sure new O2 (downstream after CAT) sensor really works. I am surprised and confused!!! NTK sensor is 3 months old. It’s direct fit, look exactly same original: 3 wire, middle black is signal, signal ground is sensor body, wht/red are heater with 6.5 om resistance. I used torch heat it up for 30 seconds - 1 mi, but no 0.9v signal voltage is detected, not even any voltage detected during heat up. I went to Pepboy bought new NTK sensor again, same result. Then, I went to Oreilly to bought Botch direct fit (sensor heat look different), exactly same result.
      I think may be the way to test it won’t show up any voltage due to ‘it’s not 100% wire up condition when put into car’.
      I put sensor back on CAT, try to see if any voltage can be detected. It’s NOT wired, no car battery voltage applies to sensor. I connect voltage meter probe to middle pin, and another probe to car body, CAT. Start the car for over 10-15 min, and see the car temperature becomes normal driving condition. During the process, NO any voltage is detected. Is the test valid?
      So, the 2 new O2 sensors DOES not work. Can I make such conclusion?
      If that’s the case, O2 + CAT not ready is never going to go away no matter how ‘hard’ I drive it. I am really confused!!! Any suggestions?

      @RANDOMFIX yes- sensor tested ok, wiring tested OK ( 5v signal and 12v ok, ohm loaded to spec). Wiring FROM o2 plug (truck side) to junction and then to pcm ok. Opened PCM and found a small crack I'm the solder on board. Cleaned-heat and sucked old solder off and re-soldered . Problem SOLVED, took about an hour, hour and a half. Stupid 90-2000s GMs let me tell ya!
      Also fixed the solder joint on board for ABS which had ALSO cracked- go figure my ABS light that had been intermittent for 6 years went away lol

      Check the o2 connections, clean with electrical ( the connection only) and wait 20 minutes and try again. Also check the battery to verify it in good condition. I'm sorry I can't give more as I have limited info.

    I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 3.7L. I just recently changed the upstream and downstream o2 sensors and I’m still receiving a check engine code for p0171 and p0174. I have also had spark plugs replaced

      When there are more than 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel in the air-fuel mixture, a lean condition exists and code P0171 is triggered. The lean condition can be caused by a vacuum leak, which introduces more air into the air-fuel mixture, or by a weak fuel system, which does not input enough fuel into the air-fuel mixture.

    In my experience, if you are using a good obd reader,it will tell you up steam or down stream, and sensor 1 or 2. In the case of a true duel exhaust system the reader will let you know bank 1 (the side of the engine where #1cylinder is located)
    Or bank 2 ( the opposite side).
    For single exhaust cars most of time, bank 1 is upstream.

      @@davidxg1164 bank two means bank two of the engine. Meaning you haveva v6 or v8 engine so it has two banks. Two exhaust streams. If you look at your engine bank one is the "leading" bank meaning it will sit a little further ahead than bank two. Like literally a half inch closer to the core support than bank two. Youd have never noticed unless someone told you

Simple- In 99% of the passenger cars and trucks folks watching this particular video are driving- BAMK 1 IS DRIVERS SIDE (CYLINDER 1 BEING FORWARDMOST) BANK 2 IS PASSENGER SIDE ( CYLINDER 2 BEING FORWARDMOST) BANK 1- CYLINDER 1-3-5, BANK 2 CYLINDER 2-4-6.
      V8-1-3-5-7, B2- 2-4-6-8. Although there are exceptions ; I'd bet 100% of thevpeople driving those exceptions don't need a video this basic.. 🤔

    I have performed the drive cycle 7 times on a 2009 mercury mariner. The O2 & HO2 sensors still will not reset. The Mercury drive cycle differs from the Ford according to my owners manual. I’m looking for suggestions or do I replace the sensors? Thanks

      The mariner was the same as the explorer so I'm not sure why your manual is stating that this. Here is the Ford drive cycle for all Ford drive cycle.ua-cam.com/video/j8ZFTE1rSfA/v-deo.html
      Make sure you battery is perfect, use a real load tester, ( $20 let know if you need help) and then check the o2 sensor connection ( unclip and clean if if need and clip back in ).

    I have a 2011 Chevy HHR and it says one of the oxygen sensors are not ready. Do I drive it 20 miles straight without turning off the vehicles or 20 miles in separate trips?

      @@RANDOMFIX Hey! Update, so I drove my HHR for 50 more miles yesterday, checked to see if one of the oxygen sensors are ready, none of the 2 have been activated. Does it mean I have to run it more or I have to replace them?

    Hello, I have a 2002 BMW 325Ci and my oxygen sensor htr is ok but not my oxygen sensor monitor or my catalyst monitor? Do I need to get new 02 sensors? Thanks in advance

      Ricky, depending on your miles and driving habits maybe yes. You need to check the O2 sensors via a scan tool . Best of luck.

      RANDOMFIX it has 167k miles and no check engine light did various drive cycles and driven well over 1k miles and still have those incomplete funny thing is my EVAP system is ok though lol

      Ricky, wow 1,000 miles and it's still not ready. First Focus on your 02 sensor monitor (don't know why but clean you throttle body >>ua-cam.com/video/hsGNYdeZLec/v-deo.html) and after you 02 sensor is ready, then focus on your catalyst (CATS) monitor, get the CATS nice and hot, drive at "consistent" highway speeds over 55+ mph. On BMW's you sometimes have to complete this process multiple times so don't loss faith!! Best of luck and let me know how it goes. _Randomfix

      @@RANDOMFIX lol it wasnt the censors. I have to change the cat 1 & 2, just changed my headers somehow bent the motor mounts. Disaster 💀🤦🏻‍♂️

      Great questions, it all depends but in my experience the hardest to set is the EVAP and the most tiring is the catalyst. The EVAP does NOT need to ready on 2000 and newer vehicles. _Randomfix

      @@RANDOMFIX next time you struggle with the cat monitor, Start your vehicle from cold, let it warm up. Idle your vehicle at 3k rpm for 3 mins then it should be set

    I have a 07 chevy tahoe and its not passing either. The EVAP, heated o2 sensor,oxygen sensor is not ready and the secondary air system, a/c refrigerant,
    EGR flow and heated catalyst is NOT supported. Does this mean the computer system is not working? I took it 4 times already for the SMOG test after driving it in the high way... Please help!!!!

    There are many states where an emission test is not required for registering a car . It's great if you live in one of these states and not have to deal with it

      Faulty emission causes cancer and health problems to others. If car owner can't comply, he should not be able to drive and pollute

      Yes, I agree with you on this but there should be a work around on vehicles when the monitors don’t set for hundreds of miles or even thousands of miles. Drive around just to pass a smog test actually causes more pollution.

      @@RANDOMFIX Of course. The most important is to have the components working well. Because even if you do some "work around" on these emission related sensors, they will give the engine wrong data causing possibly rich fuel ratio causing bad MPGs and costing you much more in gas and potential repairs (clogged CAT, engine worn through rich mixture, etc...)

    Is it possible to get this problem with a car that's just not driven very much? Like a car that's only used maybe 2 or 3 times a month, and very short trips?
    Also you mentioned this sensor being near the heater circuit on many cars, does this mean you would increase or decrease success by turning up the heater before testing? (Or turning it off?)

      The o2 sensor has an heater element so it can up the oxygen heater faster. If I car is not driving enough all kinds of things can happen to engine, electronics, and even the emissions systems. What are you driving?
