    This stresses me out just looking at it, remembering as a stagehand all the things that could go wrong backstage. I can't imagine shutting down the entire show because of the god damn Christmas tree.

    • @williamgardiner2010
      @williamgardiner2010 4 роки тому +10

      They don't cancel the entire show when it gets stuck. They simply bring the curtain down, raise the tree fully behind manually and lift the curtain. It's only Clara on stage at that point anyway. The tree in this Peter Wright production is the very best you will every see in a nutcracker. It just gets bigger and bigger and is quite thrilling. They use to have a tree that went up in folds but the one you see now was added to the Peter Wright production when the Opera House re-opened after that huge extension, renovation and remodelling back stage after the Millenium and with the new flytower. The house can now house at least four productions on site without carting production sets out of Covent Garden to warehouses outside London. So you can Sleeping Beauty one night, swiftly followed by the opera La Boheme the next.

    At our company we have a sugar plum court where the angels would be, the beginning of the second act. We use dry ice to great "fog" or "mist". It is always so beautiful

      We call them dream fairies. We have smoke/fog (it makes me cough like smoke), for battle scene, snow (lets us use less snowflakes, helps the dancers), and the soldier doll in party scene. I have no idea if it’s dry ice.

      notanotaku kun in our production they’re not super slippery actually - the fog is what will really take you down!

    • @daniellerayfield3057
      @daniellerayfield3057 5 років тому +9

      @@melissabrown2837 you don't really get fog in a theatre, as a techie you have smoke or haze , your more likes to get haze in this production over smoke as as the haze condenses it's very similar to water and if the theatre is cold it can make the floor really slippery

    • @melissabrown2837

    • @AndrewMacLaine
      @AndrewMacLaine 5 років тому +5

      I was thinking that as well! It's no secret the tree "grows" because it's on a rising platform. I want to know if the snow is made or treated to be danced upon more safely!

    • @melissabrown2837
      @melissabrown2837 5 років тому +9

      Andrew MacLaine our production uses rice paper / rice gluten for snow. It dissolves if you happen to eat it, but we recycle it for every show, so I wouldn’t recommend it 😉

    When I worked at my university's Opera theater, we did the snow the same way in our Nutcracker production. They don't mention it here, but we would always sweep the snow up during intermission and put it straight back in the bags, along with all the dust, hair, and glitter on the ground. It was disgusting.

    The Nutcracker was the first ballet I saw live on stage. It’ is simply breathtaking. That moment when the Christmas tree grows and everything else has shrunk....amazing. I cried watching the Nutcracker, just because it is so beautiful. So very beautiful with gorgeous music, very emotional. Even if you think ballet is not for you, I defy anyone not to love this. Thank you to Birmingham Royal Ballet for my first experience.

    • @Czadzikable

      Sorry, but realistically, plenty of people don't love or even like this ballet production, not to mention people who just don't envoy ballet altogether.
      Personally I can envoy the Nutcracker, but I would not say I love it. I much prefer more contemporary and stylised ballets, like those of Boris Eifman. My partner on the other hand just doesn't really like ballet.

    When I watched the "Special Features" of "Chicago" with Richard Gere, there was part of the commentary that described the difficulty that the dancers had during the song "IAll I Care About Is Love". The gold coins that fell were so slippery that the dancers were falling down and the scene had to be carefully edited. So, my question is: This is live theater and editing is out of the question, so how does the corps de ballet of Snowflakes keep from slipping and falling on the artificial snow?

    • @onemercilessming1342
      @onemercilessming1342 7 років тому +19

      Lily's Luaghing llamas--You must be one of the llamas. Apparently, you can't appreciate the problem of stage and movie props interfering with dancers' steps. But then, since snarking appears to be your only real talent, I'm not surprised at your supercilious comment.

    • @edavis7740
      @edavis7740 7 років тому +10

      I haven't danced in years, and I was never a snowflake with an actual snowfall, but I think that it's a combination of balance, being careful, and putting a bit of extra weight/pressure down whenever it seems like you'll slip. At least, that was my understanding. Pointe shoes are meant to be a bit slippery already, after all, so it's not too hard to attune yourself to just how slippery each step might be, like wearing normal shoes with poor traction.

    • @onemercilessming1342
      @onemercilessming1342 7 років тому +2

      Emma Elizabeth Davis--I made reference to the extra features on the "Chicago" DVD (with Richard Gere). The comment was made about the dancers falling on the slippery coins, which no one anticipated. Even WALKING requires balance (watch a baby who's learning to walk if you don't believe me), and walking on ice can be perilous, even with special shoes. I attended a ballet where the soloist took a header across the stage.

    As someone who’s flown onstage with a harness, it’s so scary the first time and painful. Your like 20 feet above the stage and your being swung around. You have no control and it’s a 180° wedgie. But you get use to it and then it’s alright.
