- Phew! I have never stomped on so much mud in my life! We still have a bit more cob to make to really finish off the rocket mass heater, but being able to heat our cabin as the days become colder has been great.

As I recall from my childhood in Wisconsin, that green plant’s name is “Princess Pine”.
Honestly, I don't see why people like top lighting. I live in a place with a traditional Russian mass stove and the problem with backdrafting is solved simply by starting your fire a little deeper inside the box. Even if the fire does start to draw forward, slightly closing the door creates enough draft to begin the draw. And it is so much more convenient to build a fire with horizontal access as well as withdrawing ashes for use in the garden. Also, I think most people dump a lot of perlite directly under the pipes to protect the floor. And finally, I would use a mixer instead of grape stomping. Traditional is nice but a hundred trips of anything is ridiculous. Cheers.

Mineral wool insulation (noncombustible) comes in square / stiff sheets. That's best to protect the floor under the firebrick (part 1). - Also, a stove pipe heat riser needs insulation in the barrel..... but I doubt a fire brick mini chimey needs insulation. What cool air could possibly "penetrate" through the fire brick as it's rushing by on its way out, and the air rushing by is probably 400 degrees! .... Insulating... against 400 degrees?

I know sand is part of the heat bank n Id prefer to build some sort of box to house all the materials so if I mess up I can try again its interesting cuz other then the pipe urs looks more according to actual plans Ive seen verses more modern versions.
Thank you for this! I’m also in alaska looking to build one of these. How is the sandy clay holding up as it dries? I’ve haven’t had much luck keeping it together. I was thinking of mixing in some high temp mortar to help glue it together. Looking forward to the next video.
So far very well! It will rub off if we run our hands over it and we have some cracking because we didn’t use straw or plant material in most of it but that’s an easy fix. Once it’s sealed with the linseed oil it’ll stop rubbing off as well.
Any Updates? Is it efficient? I didn't quite understand the barrel removal. For tile placement? Will it keep you warm in really cold weather?
Next week we will be talking more about it but yes it is very efficient! Barrel removal allows for tiles and for cleaning. Yes it will keep us very very warm!
I'll start by saying I think you guys are awesome. I have some questions about the "cob" you are making for the bench. At first, when you were slopping it on, I even thought that was too wet a mixture. Then, later, when you were literally pouring it out of the bucket I thought that is unlike any cob I've ever been taught. I know you did plenty of research and used that book you recommend. Is this the consistency of cob you researched that was appropriate for this application?
It was too wet but it cured fine and hasn’t cause issue for us

Normally.

Mostly based on texture and color! In person there is a good color difference between the sand and clay and what they look like mixed so you can tell when it’s all incorporated!
What shape were your hands/skin after that?
Not as bad as you’d think!
Don't see your calculations... shooting from the hip is ridiculous... do the math... likely just need to season 200% more firewoord for next year... always a year ahead to allow drying...
