Back in my day.... i remember foreign film where the audio overly was HORIBBLY SYNCED. Gibberish is fine tbh... Maybe i just dont care cuz I still cant speak spanish that well and thats a language similar to English. Our words are similar, our sentence structure is similar, we use the same letters, and I cant figure it out. For ONE movie learning a language is kinda hard. Now I will say this, spanish is EASY phonetically speaking. But learning all the words is what stumps me. Now compare my WANTING to learn spanish to learning a language that has a different concept of nouns verbs, uses different letters/kanji, has different phonics and other vast differences for only a movie. That should bring some perspective into learning Mandarin for just a movie. (Now if he wants to learn the language for his personal life and let that also go into the movie, thats fine. Other wise just let the actor just read the lines.) Learning a languge is NOT a simple feat.
@@ericolens3 i understand where you are coming from and i agree that it is not easy to learn a new language. however take a look at the efforts of scar jo for learnjng russian for black widow and timothee chalamet learning mandarin just for a singular line in dune. i’m not saying that they have to have like a 7 week training session just for one small dialogue (because realistically thats a waste of time), im saying that they (production) could have at least tried to get a linguistics teacher just for a few hours. instead of completely butchering a bunch of gibberish, not speaking mandarin and claiming for it to be mandarin. i’d rather the production to at least get the actors to say some coherent mandarin words (even they may not be perfect) than just put in a sentence that literally is not even in chinese. just to give context, we have chinese CHARACTERS and chinese PINYIN (aka the breakdown of the words). for example ”我” and “wó”. they don’t have to learn the characters bc frankly, i also cont be fucked in learning chinese characters, its a difficult process. BUT, for the PINYIN which is basically the syllable/phonics for the word, would be a much simpler breakdown of understanding how to string a conversation in chinese, without using chinese CHARACTERS. additionally because it’s pinyin, you could read it out (to the actor’s own credit) because you could see each alphabet in the word. or i could put it into this perspective. learning a language is like learning a song. different tones, different emphasis on syllables and different ways of pronunciation. perhaps the actors could have had an on-set language teacher for a few hours, and copy the teacher word for word. it’s just a game of telephone at this point. they dont have to learn every single word (would be nice if they do bc then itll have more meaning to them, but they obviously dont have the time or capacity to do so when under stress), but they could just repeat the same sentence back in the best way they could. this was the exact same method i used to teach my non-mandarin speaking friends, and they had no problems understanding the concept behind this method, and in fact made them more inquisitive about the language. NOTE: im not blaming the actors in any way possible, but when deliberately trying to incorporate a different culture, maybe production should try to put more effort in it?? rather than perpetuating the stereotype of “this is what mandarin must sound like to non-chinese speaking individuals anyway, so what’s the point”
@@ericolens3 also to add, when u said that we should just let the actor read the lines, yeah sure go ahead, thats their job.
Other wise just let the actor just read the lines.)
Learning a languge is NOT a simple feat.
@@ericolens3 also to add, when u said that we should just let the actor read the lines, yeah sure go ahead, thats their job. literally bro im a mandarin speaker but both my parents aren't, all it takes is like 6 attempts for them to correctly pronounce a word as long as i repeat it a few times. and theyre not getting paid for it either lmao
@@abimon76 Exactly.
Actors do not even have to nail the pronunciation. But natives should be able to somewhat understand it. Everything else is a shame.
I mean they could've of just told him what to say. He didn't need to know the meaning. He just needed to know how to pronounce it propally without giving a racist affect.
Right?! Very lazy on Disneys part but what can you expect from them at this point 🙄
@@Jo-er6tw they’re the same company that made the Grand Inquisitor look weird and hilarious in the Kenobi show
@@jb57551 I’m going to be honest I read that three times and I recognize it but I don’t know where it’s from
Sounds fun tho
Wait from the new kenobi show?
Haven’t seen that yet but I will!
'Racist effect' lol. I feel so bad for white people having to tolerate these kinds of accusations. I grew up on jackie chan films with the worst-read english lines of all time and the most poorly cast white actors imaginable, but nobody ever accused chan of creating a 'racist effect.'
still though why not just learn the meaning while youre at it 😀youre an actor you should know what your lines mean right
The part that frustrates me about this video is the fact that the mandarin in the show is gibberish because it’s not even MEANT to be accurate, the character just knows all languages for no reason. No one expects someone to learn that many languages for a roll, and I’m sure that simu’s joke was the way it was because he’s worked with marvel and knows that.
Imma be honest the reason they made the mandarin kinda gibberish is because they had limited time to prepare for the eventual scheduled releases on Disney plus and they probably did a lot of episodes back to back when marvel avengers was fully fledged out and planned for years
Dude it’s just a way of showing how Arthur harrows character is misleading his followers lol that went over y’all’s heads
But they all learn languages from each other. Meaning that arthur most likely wasn’t the one teaching everyone mandarin.
Bro you can't tell them that they need to be. Victims
He may right about the mandarin. But he's reaching for woke points with that "experiment" comment.
Well There’s no guarantee he meant it racially either at least that I’m aware of it’s possible he meant the cast of the movie as in “we’re not an experiment we all worked very hard on this” and to write it off as en experiment could make it feel like they really don’t care which they probably don’t aside from the profit margins but that’s okay just phrase it a bit better lol
Lol and if Simu did think it was racially motivated then he’s probably just taking it as Disney saying “hmm. I wonder how COVID’s still affecting the movie market idk put out the Chinese movie first it’ll be a good experiment” lmao which could for sure be a reach but isn’t just insane to wonder💀
At this point audience tosses the word woke around like it'll have any impact on the conversation
@@galacticsector3195 I wasn't looking for impact. I was stating the obvious. It was an interesting experiment. How would a brand new origin movie of a hero not many people are familiar with, would do in theaters during a pandemic.
@@RJizzle2000 either way he was reaching for something that wasn't there. It was an interesting experiment. Here's a new origin movie of character not many people knew of. A hero that is gonna be replacing one the avengers (of which we have loved and hard to see another replace them) that are no longer in it. Someone that marvel has seem to place a lot of importance on. How will a movie, with all that riding on it, do during a pandemic. Are fans gonna stay home and wait for it on Disney+? Are they gonna say "fuck a pandemic I'm gonna see it in theaters"? Are people gonna buy Disney+ because they know it will be on there? He took a throw away statement and blew it out of proportion. This is why people say "shut up and do your job" when it comes to entertainers expressing an opinion or statement that are just stupid.
I mean I see what you are getting at but your title and background music make it sound wayy more intense than it was
Hopefully for season 2 they actually get the actors to learn the proper languages for the setting they are in because that will show that they actually listen to criticism and that they care about offending people, Kniwing Disney they probably won’t do that though because they care more about money than actually getting the story and characters right
❤️Thanks for the endless love and support you have constantly shown me in such difficult moment. I’m forever grateful. I really appreciate your unconditional love to me and every effort exerted by you to cause a change…Where are you watching from?
Couldn’t they have just dubbed him speaking Mandarin? Or hired someone who could speak Mandarin?
and it’s not even like chinese voice actors who do dubs for live action stuff are hard to find, because most shows in chinese are dubbed over to prevent clashing accents or smth
Ye I saw them speak chinese and I was like wtf are they saying? i mean, most mandarin is trash in movies but like holy crap
I feel like he’s just stressing the importance. It’s the benefit of having diverse employees.
Anyone: makes a comment about anything
Simu Liu: *enters chat * xD
There have been a ton of inaccuracies in Moon Knight, but the way that the penultimate and finale episodes revolve around a mental institution setting, I have a feeling that the finale is going to show a new light to everything and we're going to see that these inconsistencies were intentional.
maybe it's a plot point, did you ever think of that? The reason why it wasn't a real mandarin language is that Arthur Harrow and his cult are faking it, maybe that's it?
But that's not made clear that that is the case.
Yh. The tweet Liu made was a joke.
Dudes got my respect
I respect simu more and more everyday
Have we lost sight that this is entertainment/theater/make believe? We are taking entertainment way too seriously. 🙄🙄🙄
You got a point
Simu doesn't win any points for his hypocrisy but at the same time it's not that hard to respect a language or culture, they did it with the fluent and actual russian from Scar Jo. You're acting like what he said was completely over the top and unnecessary when it wasn't.
@@ly-sh1oy Wait which part was he a hypocrite
@@vyktorehon5995 He's saying this, which is good but he didn't have this same kinda energy when he deleted a post about Mark Wahlberg's hate crimes towards Asian people only cause he worked with him and even posted a pic with Mark on Insta
@@ly-sh1oy Oh ok
I watched that episode when it came out and I was seriously questioning my 6 years of mandarin education. I’m not Chinese but I really thought it was mandarin huh.
Until today I only saw "proper" russian displayed in Daredevil and Stranger Things. I was so glad to see that native russian speakers were casted for most of the russians in Stranger Things latest season.
Even though german people are not underrepresented I can say that is the same case every time someone spoke german on a hollywood series or movie. It always sounds like a different language. It is really rare that I heard someone speak good german. The same goes for french. I rarely hear someone speak good french. There was one time they actually hired a french speaker in a captain marvel movie and I was surprised
He wasnt calling it out or upset he was making a joke or a hint towards the mispronounce
Yeah your right but it wasn't mispronounced it just wasn't even Mandarin
@@Ihateevillady Oh shit damn
In the POV of the production it is just lazy working, but I can see how Chinese can be offended by this
I feel like the gibberish instead of real mandarin is just lazy production, but calling the film they did an experiment was definitely racially motivated.

Not kidding, most Chinese people I’ve met love saying how difficult mandarin is to learn. Would probably be a compliment for them.
I heavily criticized Scarlett Johansson’s Russian for years, but this Mandarin display is even worse. She was rocking it compared to this.
Why would you even complain about this so much? Don't you have other things to do?
For real? Ethan Hawke thought he could get away with speaking "Ooga booga" in place of Mandarin?🤣🤣🤣

“We are not an experiment.”

He was just making a lighthearted joke, he was not trying to get everyone mad at all of marvel studios. He literally said he was just joking about a minor error in the show.
I guess it's safe to assume a lot of these languages they don't typically get right. And I do get what Bob was saying when he called Shang Chi an experiment. It was definitely a hail Mary during the pandemic but it worked.
