The machine is giving average exposure for the whole image. As you zoom in you exclude the very bright sprocket holes so the gain goes up. All the exposure is done digitally so it is presumably mapping whatever comes off the chip to give average density on 8 or 10 bit video I guess.

Im not sure that the projectorir adds light to a dark screen. I believes that the reason intensity chages is because the light sesnor is reading the whole image, whith the white areas on the right side and through the sprocket holes thus shutting down changing the contrast. Becouse the light is coming from the front of the film, the sensor compensates for back lighting.
that maybe what is interpreted as addin light to the image. Just my take.

You may be correct. It adds light on my Magnasonic and my older belt driven machine I bought in 2015 as well. What is strange is how it doesn't do it gradually. IT seems to do it in spurts. If you noticed the last 7 or 8 or may be more clicks zooming in did not add light. Either way when zooming and trying to match it equally with software the machines version is brighter. I could only see it adding it directly with darker scenes but when fully zoomed on bright scenes like the kids on the lawn when I went to match it then I could tell the machine brightened the scene. I suspect your take is probably closer to the truth because I do not believe the machine actually turns the physical light brighter. I always like to understand how things work. Thanks for the input.

@@super8tovideo Yes, the last few clicks after the white at right and the sprocket holes were out of the picture, I didn't think got any brighter.
