Food courts are your one-stop destination in Malaysia when it comes to local food, and on the island of Penang, we're in a fabulous one today!! Kafe Lye Lye has (at least) one of every part required to fuflil my own Malaysian food dreams of a perfect lunch - this gorgeous trio of Malay, Indian, and Chinese cuisines coming together on one table.
Thank you for joining with me, for learning with both of us today, I hope you love this video (also saying hi to you are my parents :) Thanks Mom and Dad for hanging out today!), and I hope you're looking forward to part 2 of this video... and also many more adventures to come in Malaysia.
Have a beautiful week, and a very happy AUGUST!!
Much love. Speak again very soon!
Joel and Li

This is the link to the location of the stall where we bought the snacks, which are called "Kuih," and the rest of the market is behind it of course :) Enjoy!

The dark fried noodles is called Hokkien Mee which basically fried in high heat to have the smokiness or “wok hei”….. and with a special broth for the thick noodles to soak it in….the dark soya sauce is to provide a caramelizing taste…. and yes …Thailand do have the Hokkien Mee…its in Phuket bro…and i dun think they use mustard oil in malaysia?
Btw….the dishes you have tried in Penang like claypot rice & hokkien mee is better in KL, the nasi kandar is better at Restoran Nasi Kandar Line Clear at 166/177 Penang Road, or Deens Maju Nasi Kandar..at 170 Jalan Gurdwara…. Nasi Kandar must be drenched in all the different curries to get maximum flavour…
Also try Char Kway Teow, Penang Laksa, Chendol, Prawn Noodle soup, Rojak, Fried Oyster Omelette while in Penang…
And Penang is a durian heaven with many plantations up in hills….but the durian season is at its tail end… ask for Kapri, Red Prawns (D175) if they still have…
Hi to u Joel. ..Li.. Moms an Dad food look awesome mouth watering....finger licking.

Joel, the yam cake (yam kuih) is made from taro mixed with rice flour. It is then poured into a cake pan and steamed. In Malaysia, taro is known as yam.

Hey bro its amzing seeing you enjoy malaysian food. Let me tell you a tip to having a the best way to enjoy malaysian food is; having some rice some gravy some piece of every ‘lauk’ and also with the sambal belacan ulam etc side dish together in one handful of food into the mouth. That the right way! 🤤 Its frustrating to see the food eaten 1by1 😂
Ramil!! Hey hey 👋 I hope all is going well for you, thanks again for the comment and for the good recommendations. Hope you’re having a great Wednesday today

Bah kut teh in hatyai? The origin is from port klang / port swettenham where i live
The Mee Sotong road side stall opposite this coffeeshop is the one you guys gotto try. You can't miss it, it's in front of the monument.
This is awesome thank you so much for the recommendation!!
I love the way u explain for those dishes u eat.looks very yummie 😇
The spicy sauce for the Fujien fried noodle is called Sambai ..similar to Nam prik kapi...but blended!
Pg food like Fried koay teow is like Phad Thai..
And a few Nyonya dishes also similar to that of Southern Thailand.
Love youre Videos Joel 😉
Zobinatoooooor!!! Not only one of the best names ever, I always appreciate the super high energy comments. Hope you’re having a great day, happy Wednesday
for the fried chicken, frying oil shall not be replaced.. just add new oil to existing used oil.. but we need to always take out all the debris before adding new oil, to avoid burnt smelling.. that's why the chicken is flavored to the bone
Islandar!! Great to hear from you man and thank you for the information about the chicken, the frying, the oil, I think I’m just hungry again though listening to your description :-) hope you have a great day, thanks again for the message
if you're going to Genting Highlands, make sure you stop at chin Swee temple halfway up (driving or cable car) The view there of Klang valley is a million bucks!
Penang is renown for durian. I will be there in early June next year...primarily for the durian. Singapore, KL, Penang, then on to Thailand.

@@JoelsTastyRide Ahh i see. It’s okay. You can come next time i hope so hahaha. Have a safe journey and a great trip joel!
The salty bits in the claypot rice are slivers of salted fish, somehow, all of the elements come together.
Hi Tube!! ✊🏽✌🏽👌🏽🤘🏽🙌🏽💥
Selamat Datang (Welcome) to Penang..pls gv a try on Nasi Kandar Line Clear at Jalan Penang and also the authentic Penang local cuisine and street food hawkers stalls at Cecil Street Market..hope you n your family enjoy your stay n try out local food there..
I always appreciate the recommendations and thank you so much for the spot for NasiKandar as well. Always one of the best :-)
Food looked amazing, so what was you volunteering for in Malaysia
Fried Fujian / Hokkien noodle (it is referring to the style of cooking of various chinese style like cantonese, hokkien and etc). The Singapore version is without the dark soya sauce.
The Singapore version without the dark soya sauce is called Hokkien Fried Prawn Noodles, fried with yellow noodles and vermicelli with special prawn and pork bone stock...it used to be called Rochor Mee as it was a staple of all the chinese coolies who worked near the Rochor Canal area in Singapore.
The dark version found in Malaysia - Hokkkien Mee - especially KL is more like a common Fujian or Hokkien dish. My mom used to cook them frequently. Every Hokkien family knows this recipe. And yes, it very common in Singapore too.
United culinary food of Malaysian...Penang
🥰
Hope you had a great Birthday!
Most Malaysian Chinese dishes rarely have an extra spicy option. Maybe fried kuay teow yes, but in general they serve the chilli on the side for you to customise on your own. You can request for the bird's eye chili (we call it cili padi) which is basically candy for you 🤣
4 dish +kuih for 2ppl lol thank you for so loving Malaysia food.
Super cool Yee!! Haha yes, I always want to order at least one small part of every single type or style of food that any place else. Sometimes it can get to be a lot, sometimes we take stuff home but… Yes this place it was just the perfect amount
👍👍👍

Look sooooo yummy 😍

That is an amazing message! Super cool, we moved on from Penang to Pahang (and wow, I think this is actually the favorite for us, in case you do have time and are looking for a next destination… Amazing place the Cameron Highlands)
Enjoy Bangkok enjoy CM even more, enjoy everything :-) that sounds like an awesome trip!!!
@@JoelsTastyRide Thanks for the heads up for Pahang. Safe travels brother.
Claypot rice i think they use dried shrimps.
Hi Mom & Dad!😊👋
Hi Joel! That's not exactly a mamak or nasi kandar penang known for. However thats certainly definitively an Indian mix rice.
Cool SAF!! Yeah that’s also what the owner described, her own mix, but could be called similar to Mamak.
Rimatee peace to you and your family
Rodney you’re amazing thank you so much for the prayers, all of you thanks for taking the time to greet one another as well
When I think of Hokkien Mee, I don't think of it as Chinese-influenced but a proper Malaysian Chinese food. I am just curious if there are some versions of it in China itself? :) What? Got Bak Kut Teh in Hat Yai? WOW! OK.
I thought that was Joel's dad @5:59.
It is good… No, it is great! Greaaaaat to start to see messages from you again!!!! Happy Wednesday brother!

So I’m just a mountain hillbilly and don’t tolerate spice but truly respect such beautiful food. Can one come to any Asian area and not get shunned for asking for no spice.
Hi Karen!! Thanks as always for the questions and comments, I don’t really know how to answer this question so I will just tell you of one memory, in a certain country in Asia, where I did not even SEE a single chili pepper for the entire two week trip!!
that chilli sauce is actually sambal...HAHAHHAHA we hv these in all zhi char stalls in Singapore
Hi Joel and family do have a great day say hello to Li for me
from today's Holy Mass readings:

We don't call the dish Fujian Mee. It's known as Hokkien Mee. It's a Malaysian original. You don't get this in Fujian.
