Ahhhh I can relate girl!!! i used to have a reverse pull headgear with double elastics hooked up and also two elastics inside my mouth to fix my open bite - I wasn’t allowed to take it off at all(except to brush) not even to eat and my ortho said he’d make me wear a bonded appliance if I did take it off. It was so hard to talk and even open my mouth half the time!!! But hang in there it’ll all be worth it in the end!!!
Great progress here, Alyssa! And thanks for sharing your AGGA journey - the more people who share their journeys, the more we grow our collective knowledge base around getting our face back as adults =) Two questions. 1) Did you experience any incisor tipping/flaring? Any gum loss or tooth instability for the uppers? and 2) Did you track your pre and post AGGA intermolar width? I know phase 1 is really just forward advancement but I'd be curious to see if there was any transverse growth as well. I very nearly pulled the trigger on AGGA myself but after a consult with Dr. Mew, went with the ALF instead. Apparently, my upper incisors were already on the edge of being out of the dental safe zone and AGGA may have caused them to be unstable...
"The more people who share their journeys, the more we grow our collective knowledge base around getting our face back as adults." YES. Exactly why I'm here, my friend. I look forward to hearing about your own progress too! I went ahead and recorded another video talking about tooth instability concerns, since I'd been meaning to address that anyway, but to answer your questions more succinctly here: 1. Minimal tipping/flaring. Some gum recession on the canines, but my dentist said that's normal and isn't concerned. No looseness of upper teeth, but they feel unstable in the sense that I'm not comfortable biting into food with them, really, unless it's something very soft. 2. We did not! But that would've been a good idea, eh? Ha! Hmm, very interesting about the 'dental safe zone.' I imagine my front teeth were well outside the dental safe zone when I started AGGA, because that was why I'd stopped using the Meridian appliance several months prior. So if I make it through this process unscathed, that'll definitely be a huge vote in favor of the relative safety of AGGA as far as I'm concerned! That said, I'll have to do a more thorough review of all my records, scans, etc once this is all over to give folks an idea of where my starting place was, because even for me it's a bit hazy without looking back.
Alyssa Luck Thanks for these insightful answers! Interesting you say you started AGGA while your teeth were already out of the safe zone. Rooting for your teeth coming out unscathed! Would be a solid indicator of true bone movement vs tooth borne movement. Will definitely check out your other video on stability.
Any updates on the controlled arch braces? I just completed AGGA recently and I get CAB installed in 2 weeks. Such a long process but I really hope it cures my TMJ/TMD when it's all said and done. Best of luck on your journey. I'm gonna try follow your page and see how things go for you. Thanks a bunch for posting your videos and sharing your process.
Hi! No major updates since my last video. All is well thus far, and I have another appointment on Monday where I think they're going to go ahead and start pulling my premolars forward. Good luck with your CAB installation! The initial soreness and adjustment period isn't fun, but could be much worse, and certainly worth it to prioritize jaw health! Best of luck on your journey as well, and I'd love to hear how things go for you once you're further along in the process!
Hmm, I guess it depends on what your goals are, but my understanding is that CAB aren’t really intended to provide much expansion at all, but rather to preserve the expansion that was gained through AGGA. Damon is another type of braces I hear about a lot, but I don’t recall what’s special about them; you could look into those if you’re looking for just braces, though.
Yes! Or, roughly. The gaps are 10mm on either side, but it's certainly possible a small portion of that could've been created by the back teeth moving backwards a bit (the "wedge effect"). But yes, my dentist and I are both pleased! His initial target per the Facial Beauty Institute was 6-8mm, but it was clear as I progressed that I could do with a bit more. For the CAB, I think the main goal is to get just enough extra lateral width on the top so that my occlusion is good, since right now, my upper is narrower than my lower. He did also say that my lower teeth are tilted a bit inwards, so he wants to correct that as well, but that would necessitate even more lateral expansion on the top to get things to fit together properly. Honestly I'm not clued into all the details of his plan at the moment, but I've been pleased with him so far and feel comfortable enough to trust his process.
Hi! That's actually a good question - I'm not 100% sure, but I assume I'll need some kind of retainer after the process is finished; probably just at night. I don't have much helpful info to share on the DNA, but I talked about it a bit in a few posts on my blog. I used what I thought was a DNA for a few months, but turns out it was actually a Meridian, which is similar but different. truthbutter.com/ape-diary-5-my-consult-with-dr-brad-lockhart/
do you think you stopped grinding your teeth? if not, do the bite pads kinda serve as protection for your teeth?? DID YOU get resolution of the symptoms that you listed in the blog post about why you chose agga??
Hi! No, I don't think I've stopped grinding my teeth. Of course there's no way to know for sure what happens while I'm asleep, but I still find myself involuntarily clenching while I'm awake. My guess is that my masseters are so used to being overactive, and my tongue underactive, that I'll need to strengthen my tongue quite a bit more before those unconscious habits fully resolve. But yes - the bite pads do serve as some protection! As far as resolution of the other problems I mentioned in the post: Poor occlusion (front incisors hit end-to-end): Yes! Absolutely resolved. I got 10mm of forward growth, so my jaw can come as far forward as it wants now. Poor occlusion (only my right molars touch): Not yet. The bite pads have given me some ability to chew on my left side, since we make them much larger on the left than the right to account for my uneven bite, but it's still not the same as having proper tooth-on-tooth occlusion. This should be resolved in the braces phase that I'm in now. TMJ concerns: Sort of. Because I don't have a proper stable bite yet, I don't think I'm necessarily chewing optimally yet, HOWEVER, I certainly no longer have to pull my jaw back in order for my teeth to fit together. I can feel the muscles gradually settling into a more natural bite, and I haven't noticed jaw soreness recently, but I never had too much to begin with, so I don't want to frame this as any kind of revolutionary thing. That said, I have full confidence that once the whole process is over, I have proper occlusion, and I've successfully re-trained my jaw/cheek/tongue muscles, I won't have any remaining concerns about TMJ health. Lack of tongue space: Mostly? I have 10mm more forward space than I used to, which is HUGE, but it's still not the same as if my facial bones had developed properly in the first place. But I'd say I now have enough space to keep decent tongue posture, and am optimistic that good posture habits over a long period of time will further improve structure and increase tongue space. Profile: I'm never gonna have that sculpted Hollywood bone structure, but I'd say my profile looks noticeably better than it did. So that's cool. I finally got my most recent pics from my dentist, so I'll post those soon!
@@alyssaluck I hope everything minus the last goal about looking out a movie star are reached by the end. do you notice any difference in your ability to breathe through your nose or sleep quality?? have you been doing supplementary stuff like posture exercises, chiropractor, acupuncture, and whatnot?
@@awetewtewtewawetwetw500 Ha, thanks! No noticeable difference in either of those things, but I'd never really had trouble breathing through my nose before. As far as supplementary stuff - not nearly as much as I should! I'm trying to be more diligent about posture/tongue exercises, because ultimately it's my muscles that will support and retain these structural changes going forward.
espeon88 thank you!! They are finally, although I haven’t gotten a whole lot better at talking yet! And that’s a great question - I was so eager to get outta there after the almost 3-hour appointment to get them on that I forgot to ask! My understanding is that the typical length of time is around a year, but since I’m doing implants, my hope is that I’ll get out of them a bit quicker than that. I’ll keep you guys posted!
I think it's normal for CAB, since you have a lingual wire behind your upper teeth right where your tongue normally goes! Probably less normal for normal braces. But mine was almost fully resolved within a week, thankfully. I still can't talk perfectly, but well enough to get by for a year until I get them off :)

Because i noticed on mine like if someone pushed on my nose
I didn’t notice anything, but I was so young I wasn’t really paying attention! I had the extractions when I was 8.
